Year in Review 2018<br />
Improvements in the interest of making<br />
Village ‘regional corporate powerhouse’<br />

Mayor of Tinley Park<br />
This time last year, I had<br />
the honor of outlining my<br />
goals for the Village of Tinley<br />
Park. After a year, I am<br />
proud to say we have made<br />
major strides to make those<br />
goals reality. Some of my<br />
goals for our Village are:<br />
keep the citizens of Tinley<br />
Park safe, foster a healthy<br />
economic climate for small<br />
businesses, revitalize downtown<br />
and keep Tinley Park<br />
an attractive place for visitors.<br />
I will touch on some of<br />
the improvements to public<br />
safety, downtown Tinley<br />
and our plans to make Tinley<br />
Park a regional corporate<br />
powerhouse.<br />
Public safety is a top<br />
priority for my administration.<br />
Over the last year, we<br />
installed new license plate<br />
reading cameras at key intersections,<br />
conducted a<br />
police staffing study, we<br />
hired a new police chief,<br />
and seven new officers.<br />
These improvements also<br />
extend to the Fire Department.<br />
In 2018, the Tinley<br />
Park Fire Department was<br />
awarded the highly coveted<br />
ISO Class 1 ranking.<br />
The Insurance Services<br />
Office rating system goes<br />
from 10-1, with Class 1 being<br />
the highest rating. ISO<br />
determines the rating of a<br />
fire department by evaluating,<br />
among other things,<br />
the department’s training,<br />
equipment, locations, water<br />
supply system, and the<br />
communications system of<br />
the community. According<br />
to FEMA, there are over<br />
27,000 fire departments in<br />
the U.S. and the Tinley Park<br />
Fire Department is one of<br />
only 71 departments in the<br />
entire country to receive an<br />
ISO Class 1 rating.<br />
The heart of any community<br />
is its downtown and<br />
our downtown is primed<br />
for redevelopment. Knowing<br />
this, I have been working<br />
with developers and<br />
entrepreneurs of all sizes to<br />
breathe new life into downtown.<br />
It is important for me<br />
to give the small business<br />
owners currently downtown<br />
the same opportunities as<br />
big developers, so I created<br />
the Oak Park Avenue Playbook.<br />
This is a comprehensive<br />
grant program designed<br />
to give small businesses the<br />
capital to improve themselves,<br />
which will in turn<br />
enhance the look and feel of<br />
downtown Tinley. Since its<br />
rollout earlier this year, we<br />
have 18 applications from<br />
local businesses who want<br />
to be a part of the OPA Playbook.<br />
Downtown Tinley<br />
should also reflect our Village’s<br />
strong sense of community.<br />
As such, we have<br />
finalized plans for Harmony<br />
Plaza. This will be a public<br />
gathering place next to the<br />
visit us online at<br />
www.tinleyjunction.com<br />
Oak Park Avenue METRA<br />
station. The plaza was designed<br />
with input from the<br />
community and will feature<br />
year-round activities. Harmony<br />
Plaza will contain a<br />
stage for our summer concerts,<br />
an open area for the<br />
farmer’s market, a splash<br />
pad and an ice skating area<br />
for use in the winter. Harmony<br />
Plaza will serve as a<br />
community gathering place<br />
and the centerpiece of our<br />
new downtown.<br />
In addition to the developments<br />
downtown, I have<br />
partnered with the Mayors<br />
of Orland Park and Mokena<br />
to form the Chicago Southland<br />
Interstate Alliance.<br />
This alliance is a way for<br />
our three communities to<br />
use our combined resources<br />
to pitch the area surrounding<br />
I-80 as a regional powerhouse,<br />
prime for developing<br />
new office space.<br />
I do not have the room<br />
here to discuss every improvement<br />
we have made<br />
to Tinley Park in 2018. So<br />
I wanted to focus on two areas;<br />
public safety and economic<br />
growth. Over the last<br />
year, we have made some<br />
remarkable improvements<br />
to public safety. I also have<br />
an eye on the future of Tinley<br />
Park, focusing on revitalizing<br />
downtown through<br />
projects like the OPA Playbook<br />
and Harmony Plaza<br />
and bringing in new businesses<br />
to the area through<br />
the Chicago Southland Interstate<br />
Alliance. 2018 was<br />
a bright year for Tinley<br />
Park and 2019 will be even<br />
brighter.<br />
