Wolff Tinley Park Public Library The year 2018 was another busy time for us. Our library saw over 270,000 visitors check out materials, attend events, and use our facility for work, study, internet access, and also for a lot of fun. Throughout the year, the library staff was hard at work finding new and better ways to connect with you, our community. The number of books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs and magazines, which went in and out of our doors, as well as the circulation of our digital resources, increased dramatically over the same time period last year. Our computers, free Wi-Fi, study rooms, digital media studio, and conversion station were busier than ever, and we were pleased to see that the new seating provided by the first floor renovation, in 2017, was readily used. The library continued to offer a variety of fun and educational events designed for adults, teens, and kids. Whether it was watching a movie, planting a flowerbox, attending a story time, taking a computer class to brush up on your skills, or digitizing an old VHS tape, we succeeded in bringing the community together at our library. Our Friends of the Library group continued to offer popular Sunday afternoon concerts and made many contributions to the library with proceeds from the Friends Book Store and other fundraising efforts. In addition, the Friends sponsored two shredding events, continued to purchase banners to enhance the parking lot and well-needed bags for transporting items home during inclement weather. The Friends also started the Books for Babies Program. This program provides eligible Tinley Park and Orland Hills residents with an attractive kit that includes a colorful board book along with a variety of brochures with reading tips and early literacy information. Although we had to say goodbye to our original bookmobile, which had served the community for 19 years, this spring, the library will debut a new bookmobile to carry on the service the community has come to know and use. Offering our community year-round service, the library is open seven days a week, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 pm, Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m., 3,676 hours per year. In addition, many of our services are also available 24/7 by accessing our website at tplibrary.org. tinleyjunction.com sound off the tinley junction | January 3, 2019 | 9 From the Editor And on to the next one Jacquelyn Schlabach jacquelyn@tinleyjunction.com I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say that 2018 went by in the blink of an eye. I remember ringing in the new year on Dec. 31, 2017, like it was yesterday. I went out to dinner at Olive Garden Year in Review 2018 Chamber builds on community relations to foster success Maureen Cipolla President, Board of Directors at Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce It’s hard to believe that 2018 has come and gone and we are making plans for 2019. While this year has passed quickly, as president of the Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce for 2018, it has been my pleasure to spend this past year working closely with our chamber members, citizens of Tinley Park, Village officials and local businesses. As I reflect on the past year, I am honored and humbled to have and stayed at my apartment the rest of the night watching “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” in my pajamas. It was a great way to start off 2018. Every year, we always say how fast the previous year went by, but I can say for certain, at least for me, that 2018 went by quicker than any other. I’m not sure why that was, but it’s a bit disappointing because I hope it doesn’t continue like this for the future. I suppose it’s because as we get older, we have more responsibilities and more things to keep us busy that it makes the time go by faster. And while been a part of the success we have been fortunate enough to experience. Each month, the chamber hosts opportunities for member businesses to network and make long-lasting connections and relationships. In 2018, the chamber participated in 32 ribbon cuttings, Business After Hours and multi-chamber events. Throughout the year, you have likely seen chamber involvement in many of the Village sponsored events, such as the Irish Parade, Discover Tinley and Music in the Plaza. The chamber has also hosted some favorite Tinley Park events, including Trim-A-Tree and the Parade of Lights. Among the Chamber’s most beloved events are the Annual Golf Outing, Brew & Vine Festival, and Oktoberfest. This marked the 60th year of the golf outing, a long-standing chamber tradition; the 9th year of our Brew & Vine Festival, which has grown to over 60 craft beer and wine vendors, as well as nearly 3,000 attendees; and the second year of Oktoberfest, a familyfriendly event that not only supports local businesses but also builds upon the already strong sense of community. In addition to working closely with our businesses in Tinley Park, the chamber awards scholarships each year to deserving local high school seniors. This year, we had the privilege of awarding three recipients $1,500 each. These are just a few examples of the Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce’s support of the community and local business. With a staff of only three individuals, much of what we do is made possible by the contributions of local volunteers. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we would like to that isn’t an entirely terrible thing, it would be nice if it could slow down just a tad. As I reflect on what the last 365 days brought me, I can’t help but be thankful, even if I’d like to soak in the year just a bit longer. The year 2018 marked my first full year as a journalist, after graduating from college in 2017. It also marked the first full year living in my own apartment. Looking back, it certainly was an exciting time that helped me as I move forward in my career. And of course, 2018 brought me to The Tinley Junction. It was the perfect way to end the year and an even better way to start 2019. With only a few weeks in as editor, I’ve spent a lot of time learning about Tinley Park and learning the ropes of my job. It really has made me more excited for what’s to come. I can already tell that 2019 will be a year full of more exciting, interesting, difficult and meaningful stories, and the best part is that I get to work with all the residents of Tinley Park to make them all come to life. So while I’m sad to see 2018 go, I can’t help but look forward to all that 2019 has in store. extend a huge thank you to those that have put in countless hours helping run these events. As we look to the New Year, I am excited to see the next steps the chamber will take to strengthen our business community and engage the citizens of Tinley Park. Looking ahead to a New Year, we are diving into many new initiatives, including public forums for citizens interested in becoming business owners in Tinley Park, more education and advancement for the management and staff of our Chamber Members and working closely with our local Chambers to enhance the Chamber experience for our Members. It has been a true privilege to lead the chamber in 2018 and I look forward to seeing the impact that this Chamber will make in Tinley Park in 2019. fire From Page 7 Janozik to our team. Chief Kris Dunn, Lieutenants Don DeBias and Bob Reynolds, Engineers Norm Roney and Tony DeAdam, and Firefighters Matt Johnson, Brad Roemer, and Dave Adkins for their role in saving four dogs during a house fire. Company Citations were also presented to Lieutenant Shawn Richards, Engineer Joe Greco, and Firefighter Steve Grzeszkiewicz for their role in assisting in the delivery of a baby. Major Capital Purchases •Our new Aerial Tower and Engine have been placed into service replacing aging apparatus and increasing our operational capacity and improving the safety of our crews who operate them. •A new breathing apparatus compressor has been placed into service at our training center, allowing for quick refill of air bottles after emergencies and during training events. Firefighters retired Several experienced veteran firefighters retired from service this year, including Lieutenant Jason Slager, Lieutenant Jim Owczarski, and Engineer Mark Rago retired with a combined 79 years of service. We said farewell to three retired members of the department who passed away; Engineer Anthony Mazziotta, Captain Ed Brauer and Deanne Winterstein were honored.
