Here are the changes set to take
effect Jan. 1, 2019, according to
the SSA’s annual fact sheet. Increased
payments actually begin
Dec. 31, 2018.
Benefi ciaries will see a 2.8% increase
in payments.
For 2019, more than 67 million Social
Security benefi ciaries will see
a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment
(COLA). This increase is meant to
counteract the effect of infl ation.
This calculation ensures that your
Social Security check has the
same buying power that it did the
previous year.
The 2.8% bump in 2019 represents
a 0.8% increase over last year’s
2% COLA and the largest increase
since 2012 when benefi ts went up
3.6%.
For the average Social Security recipient,
however, this 2.8% raise will
amount to just $39 per month, as
the average monthly payout increases
from $1,422 in 2018 to $1,461
in 2019.
Maximum taxable earnings will increase
to $132,900.
In 2018, employees were required to
pay a 6.2% Social Security tax(with
their employer matching that payment)
on income up to $128,400.
Any earnings above that amount
were not subject to the tax. In 2019,
the tax rate will remain the same at
6.2%, but the tax cap will increase
to $132,900.
Full retirement age will continue to
increase.
The absolute earliest you can start
claiming Social Security retirement
benefi ts is 62. However, claiming before
your full (or normal) retirement
age will result in the payout being
permanently reduced. For those who
turn 62 in 2018, full retirement age
is 66 and four months. But for those
who turn 62 in 2019, the full retirement
age will increase to 66 and six
months. Full retirement age is set to
increase by two months each year
until it hits 67.
Earnings limits will increase.
If you work while collecting Social Security
benefi ts you may fi nd all or part
of your benefi ts temporarily withheld,
depending on how much you earn.
However, those income limits will increase
slightly in 2019.
Prior to reaching full retirement
age, you will be able to earn up to
$17,640 in 2019. After that, $1 will
be deducted from your payment for
every $2 that exceeds the limit. The
2019 annual limit marks a $600 increase
over 2018’s limit of $17,040.
f you reach full retirement age
in 2019, you will be able to earn
$46,920, up $1,560 from 2018’s
$45,360 annual limit. For every $3
earned over the 2019 limit, your Social
Security benefi ts will be reduced
by $1, but it will only apply to money
earned in the months prior to hitting
full retirement age.
Once you hit full retirement age, no
benefi ts will be withheld if you continue
working. Social Security disability
thresholds will increase.
About 10 million Americans qualify
for Social Security disability payments,
and those thresholds are also
increasing slightly in 2019. For the
non-blind, the maximum benefi t will
increase $40 a month to $1,220.
Social Security recipients will be
able to view their COLA notice online
through their
mySocialSecurityaccount
As always it’s a good idea to be aware
of additional changes that could be
announced in the coming months.
Turning Your Smile...
Into A Work Of Art
Dr. John M. and Janice Griffies
He received his certifi cate in orthodontics
from the U.S. Army Orthodontic
Training Program at Fort
Meade and practiced dentistry and
orthodontics in the Army for over
22 years. In addition, he served as
the orthodontic instructor for three
Army Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
training programs and the Fort Bragg
General Dentistry training program.
In July 2005,
Dr. Griffi es retired as the Orthodontic
Consultant to the Army Surgeon
General.
“The Team”
Seven Lakes Orthodontics is a family
practice and very proud of that fact.
Everyone that works with them was
a patient, a patient’s parent or a
friend of the family. For example, Dr.
Griffi es’ wife, Janice and his daughter,
Brandy, both work here.
Then there is Bill, our lab tech. Dr.
Griffi es treated all three of his sons,
then he came to work for us, followed
by his son, and former patient,
Alex, followed then by his wife, Deb.
Madaline’s son, Gunnar was a patient
before she joined us.
Kylle was a patient before he came
aboard. Of course, Kylle’s mom, Lisa,
works with us as well.
We bring on team members that
have great personalities and great
hearts. Of course, our team is highly
trained and effi cient, but really, best
of all is that they are a blast. We
enjoy being a little on the wacky side
and hope that you will want to join us
(only if you’re a little wacky yourself).
Please get acquainted with our most
fabulous team...
Located in both Seven Lakes and
Raeford, the practice’s top priority is
to provide high quality orthodontics
in a friendly, comfortable environment.
We utilize the latest technological
advances in the industry to include
digital radiography, advanced
computer graphics, self-ligating and
almost invisible ceramic brackets to
ensure you receive effi cient, quality
care along with achieving an awesome
smile.
Our goal is to provide you with a
beautiful and long lasting smile
along with a functional bite. There
are two ways you can bite your teeth
together, one is where your teeth fi t
best and one is where your jaw joint
fi ts best in the joint.
Our goal is to bring those two bites
together so when you bite your teeth
together your jaw is in the best
position within the jaw joint and your
teeth and jaws are in harmony with
each other.
In order to meet this goal, we take
extra steps in our diagnostic records
in order to use an articulator which
functions very similar to your jaw
joint. This enables Dr. Griffi es to
study your jaws in motion to determine
the best positions for your
teeth so they will be in harmony
with your jaw joint.
According to the American Association
of Orthodontists, a child should
have a consultation with an orthodontist
at age seven. While only a
very small percentage of patients
need treatment at this age, an initial
consultation and evaluation provides
the opportunity to detect issues
early on – which means issues can
be corrected very simply and inexpensively.
Come by for a visit and enjoy
some hot coffee and a cookie!
Whether you are a wine newbie or
an experienced taster, wine tasting
events are a fun way to learn about
what you like and don’t like. It’s the
perfect opportunity to try new wines
without having to invest in a bottle if
you don’t like it.
To help you out at our next event, my
husband Tom and I, owners of Sandhills
Winery have compiled a list of
our top dos and don’t s, so no matter
how experienced you are, you’ll feel
right at home trying great wines on
Thursday evenings..
Our tastings are usually accomplished
by offering five different wines paired
with food for only $10.00 per person!
A recent Santa Barbara Tasting Event
we offered the following five wines:
Cambria Rose
Byron Santa Maria Chardonnay
Cambria Katherines Vineyard Chardonnay
Nielson Santa Barbara Pinot Noir
Cambria Tepesquet Syrah
Paired with a Charcuterie Board of
Savory Variety of Cheeses, Fresh
Fruits, Nuts, and Assorted Meats for
your pleasure... We begin at 5:30
and the tasting ends around 9:30.
Finding out about wine is like space
travel: Once you get going, there’s no
end in sight. Fortunately for those who
choose to be educated wine drinkers,
learning about wine is a fascinating
experience, full of new flavors, new
places, and new friends.
Join Us At Sandhills Winery
For A Wine Tasting Event
At Sandhills Winery wine tastings are
popular because they override the
limitations of sampling wine alone,
at home. How many wines can you
taste on your own (unless you don’t
mind throwing away nine-tenths of every
bottle)? How many wines are you
willing to buy on your own? And how
much can you learn by tasting wine
in isolation — or with a friend whose
expertise is no greater than yours?
At wine tastings, you can learn from
your fellow tasters, as well as make
new friends who share your interest
in wine. Most importantly, you can
taste wine in the company of some individuals
who are more experienced
than you, which is a real boon in training
your palate.
If you’ve never been to a Sandhills
Winery wine tasting, be aware that
a few matters of etiquette apply at
most tastings.
Familiarizing yourself with this etiquette
will help you feel more comfortable.
Otherwise, you’re likely to
be appalled by what you see or hear.
Why are those people behaving like
that?!
Professional wine tasters long ago
discovered that if they swallow every
wine they taste, they’re far less
thoughtful tasters by the time they
reach wine four or five...
At first, naturally, some tasters are
loath to spit out wine. Not only have
they been brought up to believe that
spitting is uncouth, but they’ve also
paid good money for the opportunity
to taste the wines. Why waste them?
Well, you can drink all of your wine
at a wine tasting, if you wish — and
some people do. But we don’t advise
that you do, for the following reasons:
Evaluating the later wines will be difficult
if you swallow the earlier ones.
Swallowing isn’t really necessary in
order to taste the wine fully. If you
leave the wine in your mouth for eight
to ten seconds this will give you the
taste test.
The simple solution: Spit out the wine.
Just about all experienced wine tasters
do. Believe it or not, spitting will
seem to be a very normal thing to do
at wine tastings after a while. (And,
in the meantime, it’s one sure way to
appear more experienced than you
are!)
Courteous wine tasters also do not
volunteer their opinions about a wine
until other tasters have had a chance
to taste the wine. Serious tasters like
to form their opinions independently
and are sure to throw dirty looks at
anyone who interrupts their concentration.
If you’re at a walk around tasting, the
whole experience can end up being
totally overwhelming, even for professionals.
Our advice is to give yourself
a theme to start with and play spot
the difference with wines from that
theme.
How you make notes at a tasting
event is completely up to you, but you
should try to do it. After tasting several
glasses, your memory can get a
little hazy. Use your own language so
it makes sense to you and give it a
score out of 10 based on how much
you personally like it.
Don’t just stick to what you know.
Chances are you will be tasting a
wide variety of wines, both familiar
and unfamiliar. If it’s a walk-around
tasting with wines from different regions,
check out your favorite grape
but from a different country. Leave
your misconceptions at the door and
try a wine you think you’ll hate. Worst
case scenario, you end up spitting,
but, you never know, you could discover
your new favorite wine!
If you’re not sure about a wine or
want to know the background, don’t
be afraid to ask our wine connoisseur
Aaron or the person pouring. A good
wine tasting host will be approachable
and informative and giving a
wine some context can help you to
appreciate it more. The host is there
to help you and guide you through
your tasting.
We always have water to take a sip
between tastings and use it to swill
your glass. Usually you’ll be offered
crackers or other nibbles during your
tasting.
Make sure to spit. Wine tastings are
dangerous places for the uninitiated!
Of course you can swallow if you
want to, but do this towards to end or
you’ll end up horribly drunk and not
remembering anything. You’ll learn a
lot more and your head will thank you
in the morning.
Don’t be afraid to give your opinion
on the taste of a wine. There is no
right or wrong answer in wine tasting;
it’s totally subjective. Share your
thoughts and opinions with other
guests. If your host asks you what
wine you like, tell them. That way they
can help match your taste with the
similar wines.
Make sure to: Look - check out the
color and clarity. Be more specific
than red and white - what kind of red
is it? Maroon, purple, ruby, or even
brown? Is it watery or dark, cloudy or
clear?
Swirl - When you swirl, the more droplets
of wine that cling to the inside
of the glass indicate a higher alcohol
content. Take this opportunity to
have a quick sniff of your wine to form
a first impression.
Smell - now bring the glass up to your
nose for a second impression and
take in the aroma. Is it dark black
fruit? Crunchy red fruit? Ask yourself
what it isn’t. That will help too.
Sip and Savor - finally it’s time to taste.
Sip, don’t gulp, and let it roll around
your mouth. A lot of wine tasting is in
the texture, which you will miss if you
swallow it too quickly. Breathe out
and see how long the flavor lasts. If
it disappears, it has a short finish. if
it lingers, it has a long finish. A long
finish is generally a sign of quality.
Always hold your glass by the stem,
not the bowl. Not only will you get
grubby fingerprints on the glass, but
you’ll also affect the temperature of
the wine which will impinge on your
tasting ability. It’s also another sure
fire way to annoy those wine snobs.
And finally don’t wear a white shirt..
Believe owners, Tom and Trish Elliot,
it’s not worth it.
Insanely Cool Products
You Probably Haven’t Heard Of
This fi rst gadget on our list sold and
shipped more than 1.5 million units
worldwide in 2018 and has anyone
who wears glasses scrambling to buy
it before it sells out. It was designed
specifi cally for cleaning eyeglasses,
sunglasses and reading glasses,
There’s a new device you simply
plug into your car that tells you
exact-ly what’s wrong with it. If you
own a car built after 1996 then you
can use this brilliant new device
called FIXD to instantly diagnose any
car problems. This means the next
time your “Check Engine Light”
happens to come on, you’ll know
exactly what the issue is and the
mechanics won’t be able to lie to
you!
It’s called Dodow and it’s completely
disrupting the billion dollar sleeping
pill industry worldwide. Instead of taking
harmful and toxic pills to try and
fall asleep (that often have you feeling
groggy the next morning), millions of
people are now turning to Dodow. It’s
super simple, really. You put the circular
little device on your nightstand, and
it emits a soft blue light that glows in a
rhythmic pattern. All you have to do is
turn it on, breathe in and out with the
light, and BOOM. Asleep.
Let’s face it, as we get older, we seem to
misplace things more often. But when
you attach this coin-sized tracking
device to an item you can see exactly
where it is at all times. Locate your lost
bag, bike or even dog.
The XY Find It app displays how far
you are from your keys or purse you
dropped, and it will sound the alarm to
help you pinpoint its exact location.
KeySmart This handy key organizer
offers a simple, elegant solution for organizing
your keys – allowing you to
eliminate your keychain for good.
With EnergixCharge you’ll never have
to fiddle with cords again. Just put your
phone down to charge and pick it back
up when you’re ready to go.
It makes the perfect partner for any
desk or nightstand.
What’s even more impressive is that
while delivering a wireless charge most
phones will see a massive improvement
in battery life, data streaming, and
overall performance.
Days are getting shorter, the weather is
getting colder. Heat up an entire room
in < 20 minutes.
After a long and hot summer, you need
to be ready for a cold winter.
Don’t be caught in the middle of a
snowstorm, bundled up with 3 layers
of clothing wishing you had your own
HeatBuddy.
Portable and with adjustable settings,
HeatBuddy helps you and your family
make life easier one room at a time!
So this year I purchased something for
him that he’ll actually use.
It’s called the Glowbowl, and it’s a motion
activated gadget that sits inside the
toilet bowl. When you enter the washroom,
the toilet lights up It also has a
built in air-freshener to leave the bathroom
smelling great.
Always been interested in drones but
don’t know where to start? This is the
perfect beginner-entry to the world of
the drone.
Unlike those big (and expensive) ones
that need a backpack just to hold it, this
is the same size as your smartphone –
at a fraction of the cost!
Control the drone’s flight at the ease of
your smartphone.
Show this off to your friends as you
capture amazing photos and videos
from impossible angles!
Let’s start with the basics: this durable
key holder can hold up to 14 keys in
a compact fashion, and is durable to
boot.
Bathroom trips at night can be a real
pain in the you know what. Having to
get out of bed, stumbling around to
find the light only to be fully woken up
when you finally turn it on.
As my dad gets older, he has to go to
the bathroom at least twice a night.
It’s an event with doggie style!
The second annual Welsh Terrier
Stink Eye Convention wags on November
1-4, 2018 in Southern Pines.
About 80 canines and their owners
from across the United States and
foreign counties including Australia,
Canada, England, Mexico and Wales
will be united to raise money for WT-
CARES, a non-profit Welsh Terrier rescue
organization.
The goal of the weekend is to raise
money for Welsh Terrier Cares as the
funds are used to rehome dogs and
take care of any health needs that
they have prior to placing them into
loving homes.”
The weekend begins with a visit to
Pooch Park in the Pines on Friday,
Nov. 2, followed by lunch at Ironwood
Café. Events on Saturday, Nov. 3 include
a terrier-ific Welsh Terrier Walk
through downtown Southern Pines
from 10:30am until noon.
The highlight of the weekend is a special
fundraising gala will be held on
Saturday evening at Hampton Inn &
Suites by Hilton where owners dress
up their four-legged friends for a festive
costume contest.
The town of Aberdeen is also supporting
the event as WTCARES has been
presented with a proclamation from
mayor Robert Ferrell that Saturday,
November 3rd will be officially known
as “Welsh Terrier Day”.
WTCARES was formed as a committee
of the Welsh Terrier Club of America
in the early 1980’s.
With a mission to rescue Welsh terriers
in need and to rehome them.
WTCARES became a charitable trust
established by the WTCA in 2007
with its own trustees and treasury.
Welshes come to WTCARES for many
reasons.
Perhaps an owner has moved and
cannot take their dog with them or
the owner has become ill and is unable
to look after their Welsh any longer.
We also rescue Welshes from shelters,
wondering lost in the streets,
and those turned over from commercial
breeders.
WTCARES is also an organization
that Welsh Terrier owners can turn
to for educational purposes; helping
welshie families understand the
breed and the dogs feisty, independent
personality.
Rescues are fostered by volunteers
and evaluated to determine their
temperament, training, and suitability
for placement.
Our application process, interviewing
of prospective matches, and home
visits help us match the right dog to
family.
We continue to have contact with and
support of family and dog through the
years.
All rescues are up to date on shots,
have been spayed or neutered, and
any health issues, testing, and treatment
done before placement.
Here’s a look at the 2018 adoption numbers
from over 1,200 shelters across the country.
TOTAL PETS ADOPTED
As Of August 24th, 2018
Grand total since 2015: 248,175
94,524
NBC and Telemundo owned stations are teaming up with hundreds
of shelters across the country to host Clear the Shelters,
a nationwide pet adoption drive beginning Saturday, August 18
to help find loving homes for animals in need.
Heading off to college for the first
time and leaving the comforts of
home can be a difficult transition.
And for students leaving an animal
companion behind, the move can feel
even more difficult.
While most schools have a strict no
pet policy for campus housing, some
offer special accommodations for
students to help ease the process.
From lizards to horses, each school
has a different pet policy, including
restrictions on age, weight, cage, and
sometimes, whether or not the animal
was a family pet before entering
college.
While service animals on campus
were once used only exclusively as
guide dogs for students with visual
impairments, today schools are grappling
with a rise of “emotional support
animals.”
As diagnoses of anxiety, depression
and other mental health problems
among college students reaches
record highs, according the Center
of Collegiate Mental Health, so has
the prescription of these pets, also
known as comfort animals, for their
soothing abilities.
Whether or not a school agrees that
these animals are therapeutic is besides
the point; imposing an outright
animal ban for all students could vi
olate federal law prohibiting discrimination
in housing. So which college
is most pet-friendly? According to Animal
Planet, Eckerd college.
Residents may choose from 14 residence
halls that permit dogs, cats,
rabbits, ducks, chinchillas and ferrets.
In addition, small pets in cages
are permitted in all residence halls.
Students also have access to a local
veterinarian who does pet health
checks twice a year.
Outgoing pets at Eckerd are honored
at a separate graduation ceremony.
TOTAL PETS ADOPTED
As Of August 24th, 2018
Grand total since 2015: 248,175
94,524
NBC and Telemundo owned stations are teaming up with hundreds
of shelters across the country to host Clear the Shelters,
a nationwide pet adoption drive beginning Saturday, August 18
to help find loving homes for animals in need.
Heading off to college for the first
time and leaving the comforts of
home can be a difficult transition.
And for students leaving an animal
companion behind, the move can feel
even more difficult.
While most schools have a strict no
pet policy for campus housing, some
offer special accommodations for
students to help ease the process.
From lizards to horses, each school
has a different pet policy, including
restrictions on age, weight, cage, and
sometimes, whether or not the animal
was a family pet before entering
college.
While service animals on campus
were once used only exclusively as
guide dogs for students with visual
impairments, today schools are grappling
with a rise of “emotional support
animals.”
As diagnoses of anxiety, depression
and other mental health problems
among college students reaches
record highs, according the Center
of Collegiate Mental Health, so has
the prescription of these pets, also
known as comfort animals, for their
soothing abilities.
Whether or not a school agrees that
these animals are therapeutic is besides
the point; imposing an outright
animal ban for all students could vi
olate federal law prohibiting discrimination
in housing. So which college
is most pet-friendly? According to Animal
Planet, Eckerd college.
Residents may choose from 14 residence
halls that permit dogs, cats,
rabbits, ducks, chinchillas and ferrets.
In addition, small pets in cages
are permitted in all residence halls.
Students also have access to a local
veterinarian who does pet health
checks twice a year.
Outgoing pets at Eckerd are honored
at a separate graduation ceremony.
Every year, hundreds of homeless
animals pass through the doors of
the Moore Humane Society’s “no-kill”
some degree of medical care ranging
from minor to extensive.
SAVE AN ANIMAL · SAVE A LIFE
While our willingness to help is
unlimited, our financial resources are
not. In 2017 we spent $45,000. to
cover veterinary costs for life-saving
operations and to cover spay-neuter
$50,000. Please help us raise the
This is the first time I had the “privilege”
of having a pimento cheese
sandwich. It is as special as Rae’s
Creek, the Green Jacket or Amen
Corner at the Masters.
What you can devour is a sandwich
of two names and five ingredients,
a quick item to grab at the Masters
concession stands.
Some call it the “Caviar of the South”.
It comes sealed in green plastic, a
color that blends in with the Augusta
National in case the wrapper goes
fl ying around.
They drink mint juleps at the Kentucky
Derby, and eat Big Dodger
Dogs in L. A. No one is sure how the
Pimento Cheese Sandwich became
the signature taste of the Masters,
beginning with its debut in 1934.
While scrummaging around my
Mom’s old cookbook at Seven Lakes
I came upon an old yellowed faded
recipe for the “Southern Caviar...”
RECIPE
2 cups shredded extra-sharp
Cheddar cheese--8 ounces cream
cheese-- softened--1/2 cup mayonnaise--1/4
teaspoon garlic powder--1/4
teaspoon ground cayenne
pepper--1/4 teaspoon onion powder--1
jalapeno pepper, seeded and
minced--1 (4 ounce) jar diced pimento,
drained--salt and black pepper to
taste.
Place the Cheddar cheese, cream
cheese, mayonnaise, garlic powder,
cayenne pepper, onion powder,
minced jalapeno, and pimento into
the large bowl of a mixer. Beat at
medium speed, with paddle if possible,
until thoroughly combined.
Here are just a few of the amazing and adorable
reasons why dogs are the best pets in the world:
They’ll greet you like you’ve been gone a century
when you only went out for a five-minute trip to the store.
They keep your bed warm for you when it gets cold at night.
Dogs will watch TV with you without hogging the remote.
Dogs find the greatest joy in even the simplest of things,
like a ride in the car.
Dogs are the best because, unlike people (and most cats),
they love you unconditionally.
They know how to take awesome selfies.
Dogs will inspire you to stop and sniff the flowers.
And, according to the American Heart Association,
owning a dog may even protect you from heart disease.
Christmas 4 Moore in Need of
Sponsors to Serve an
Additional 100 Families
Christmas for Moore, a local nonprofit,
served more than 300 families in
2016 with basic needs and gifts for
area children with a goal of not leaving
any empty stockings for those
who registered last year. Everyone
was served who applied.
Four events held last month throughout
the county have demonstrated an
even greater need for 2017, with an
additional 100 families, or 350 individuals,
including children and adults
are still in need of adoption.
Working with these local families
and recognizing the needs exceed
available sponsorships, Christmas
for Moore’s dedicated volunteers are
seeking local businesses, churches
and individuals to help ensure these
families too, find joy in the upcoming
season of giving.
Christmas for Moore has had very
generous sponsors in the past, and
we need their continued support,
said Eleanora Voelkel, one of the
group’s volunteers and steering committee
members.
However, this year, “we need new
sponsors to come forward and offer a
helping hand, she added. Each family
who registered was told that we will
do our best to sponsor them, and,
in the past, we have always found
a sponsor for each family. We pray
this year will be the same and that no
family will need to be turned away.”
Sponsors are matched with an individual
or family and choose how to
support the needs. A Food Lion Gift
card based on the size of the family
is given to provide a Christmas meal.
Those interested in sponsoring a
family or making a donation to the
group may contact
Voice mail: 910-947-4438, email
Christmas4Moore@gmail.com or
mail donations directly to Christmas
for Moore, PO Box 938, Carthage,
NC. 28327
“Everyone involved in the program
has been so blessed in the process
of providing gifts and food for these,
our local neighbors in time of need.
Every family truly appreciates and
needs the support of their community,
Voelkel said.”
The Labrador Retriever does it
again! In a press conference today
at its new pet care space, AKC Canine
Retreat, the American Kennel
Club (AKC®), the nation’s largest
purebred dog registry, is announcing
that the intelligent, family friendly
Lab firmly holds on to the number
one spot on the most popular list for
a record-breaking 26th consecutive
year.
The Lab’s eager to please temperament
is just one of many reasons
why this ideal family dog takes top
honors year after year.. On top of all
that, they’re also pretty cute.
(Next To pastimes)
to understand the meaning of the
winter holiday season, there will
often be guests visiting, and in the
subsequent bustle, it will be easier
for your dog to bring harm upon
himself. Keeping in mind that the
holidays can present dangers to
dogs, and understanding what those
dangers might be can help guarantee
that your best friend will be in
good shape to greet the New Year.
Thanksgiving, Christmas and the
holiday season in general will see
a great deal of candy in evidence,
including chocolates. Chocolate is
poisonous to dogs - the problem
element is theobromine, and it will
not take much to make a dog sick,
or even cause the dog’s death. The
darker the chocolate, the more danger
for your dog.
Skip giving your best friend your fruit
cake this year, too. Grapes and raisins
are both poisonous to dogs. Any
other cookie or cake that contains
raisins, almonds, or currents should
be on the forbidden list. Dieters who
are substituting xylitol for sugar to
save on calories should keep any
treats prepared with this sweetener
away from their dog. Xylitol will
cause a rapid and potentially fatal
drop in blood sugar in dogs.
The holidays mean that a great deal
of fatty food will be in evidence, and
fat trimmed from ham, roasts, or
the roast bird can pose problems for
your dog. Too much fat can bring on
an episode of pancreatitis, which is
painful at best, and life-threatening
at the event.
Tinsel is sometimes looked upon as
a delicacy by dogs. Eating tinsel can
result in intestinal blockage, which
will necessitate a trip to the vet’s to
handle. Glass ornaments that fall
off the tree and shatter can also
be eaten by dogs, especially puppies.
The Christmas tree can cause
problems for your dog in several
ways: dogs can knock over the tree
either accidentally or deliberately, or
the dog might eat some of the pine
needles. Once inside your dog, pine
needles will act in much the same
way as bones; puncturing the tissues
of the intestines and stomach. They
Those lovely snow globes often have
an antifreeze-based fluid inside
them. If these break, a dog could lap
up poison that could cause kidney
failure. It’s no secret that people
tend to consume a greater than
normal amount of alcoholic beverages
during the holidays, and some of
these can be attractive to your dog,
especially a drink like eggnog. Holiday
punch may also smell good to a
dog, so keep any drinks that contain
alcohol well out of the dog’s reach.
Puppies, and some older dogs, too,
will often chew on electrical cords.
While you may have taken care to
keep your usual cords safe from
canine teeth, lights on the tree and
other decorations can present additional
hazards, so take care to keep
all pets away from electric cords.
Don’t let your dog get lost outside
during the holidays. With the arrival
of company, the door will be open for
much longer than it is usually, and a
dog that has become nervous with
all the new people and happenings
may bolt out.
Making sure that your dog is wearing
his or her tags or has been
micro-chipped are ways of assuring
that you will get your lost pooch back
as quickly as possible. Keeping your
dog safe and healthy over the holiday
season isn’t difficult; it just takes
a bit of forethought and planning.
The water in the reservoir is also a
danger for cats. Sap from the tree
that settles in the reservoir is toxic,
as are any tree preservatives used to
extend the life of the cut tree. Once
believed to be deadly for cats, it’s
now known that the poinsettia is
mildly toxic. Ingestion can cause irritation
to the mouth, esophagus and
stomach. Spray the plant with a bitter
anti-chew spray if your cat shows
an interest in your holiday poinsettia
plants. Holly and Mistletoe can
cause extreme intestinal problems
and can even cause a severe drop
in blood pressure. Both plants can
cause breathing problems and intense
abdominal pain.
Buck is a sweet soul. He enjoys attention from his humans and is
independent too. He loves to be thrown toys or play a little tug of war
but is also content with a leisurely stroll. He did very nicely with one
of our younger school-age volunteers and was respectful of their smaller
size. Buck is a neutered 4-year old who was surrendered by his owners
who were moving to Alaska, along with his sibling Kathy. He is a Siberian
“We used Shannon and Chad to sell our home of 17 years and buy one. They sold our home in less than 24
hours. On the selling side, I don't think you can find anyone more knowledgeable. The quality of their work
from the pictures, to inspections, to the most minor details was truly outstanding. On the buying side, they
were knowledgeable, caring, and determined to find us the right home. We would highly recommend them
to anyone. Not only were they professional, they were a lot of fun to work with. Buying and selling is
stressful. They were able to make the process fun.”
A Memorable November 16 At 7 Lakes Prescription Shoppe
While I was getting money out of my purse to pay the cashier at the counter
for my order. Suddenly, this lovely young assistant noticed that my middle
fi nger on my right hand was bleeding. Needless to say I was caught by
surprise and hardly had time to react when another fi rst aid lady was
assisting me and they took care of my unfortunate happening.
This is one more reason to congratulate Rob and his precious staff for the
fi ne, spontaneous work they are devoting to their customers. Yes from
the bottom of my heart a BIG thank you fo this wonderful act of caring.
I wish you and your great staff all continuous success in your work. Yes,
to all of you may the New Year 2019 bless you with Joy, Good Health
16,000+ Minnows Find New Homes
In Lake Auman
Don Smith, Bonnie & Phil Kaylor and Glenn Anderson
Lake Auman became the new home
for more than 16,000 Fathead
minnows on Friday, November 9th
when the Lake Auman Sports Club
stocked these minnows in the lake
as part of the lake’s fi sh management
program.
The Fathead minnows are an olive
colored bait fi sh - often sold as
bait- and were stocked as forage or
feeder fi sh for the bream and other
sport fi sh in Lake Auman.
The minnows will grow up to three
inches in length with the males
growing bigger than the females.
They will reproduce a minimum two
to four times during their twelve to
Grace Church Seven Lakes Campus
New Service Times
The Seven Lakes Campus of Grace
Church has grown tremendously over
the past year. We are excited about
all the new people who have joined
our Grace family. However, we know
we are not done growing yet. We are
adding a second service in the new
year to welcome even more families
through our doors.
We currently offer one service at
10:15 AM, however, starting January
13, 2019, our new Sunday morning
fi fteen month life span.
All of the minnows were purchased
from and delivered by Carolina Fish
Hatchery in Turkey, NC and were
certifi ed non-invasive species.
They were placed in the lake at
strategic locations by Sports Club
volunteers Glenn Anderson,
Steve Haniotis and Don Smith, who
organized and supervised the stocking.
Other initiatives to ensure and
maintain the overall good health of
Lake Auman are taking place on an
ongoing basis throughout the year by
the Lake Auman Sports Club.
Grace Church Seven Lakes Campus
New Service Times
worship experience times will be
9:30 AM and 11:00 AM. We believe
that life-change happens at Grace.
People experience hope, joy and a
renewed outlook on life when they
come to Grace Church.
Jimmy Coxe, the Campus Pastor, and
the rest of the Seven Lakes family
are excited about this new opportunity
to reach more people with the
love of Jesus. We welcome you to
join us, get connected and experience
life-change with us. We have
made space just for you and hope to
see you soon.

Back in the early 70’s while going to
college at the University of Georgia
in Athens, my roommate being from
Augusta got his hands on some 4
a blast. One of the things I most
remember is not the “Golden Bear”
winning in 72’ , but all of the food
and drinks being so cheap.
