Craft Beer Scene
king. Pilsners tend to be very
popular, too; and recently there
are more and more people asking
for sours and fruit varieties on draft.
Today’s craft beer scene is
overwhelming. Even for those with
a grasp on hop varieties and local
breweries, combing through a tap
list can induce decision paralysis.
But if there’s one thing that should
guide an order, it’s freshness. Draft
beer has long been heralded as the
best option, whether for mouthfeel,
pressure control or a foamy head.
Now that so many craft breweries
are choosing cans over bottles
and kegs, is draft still considered
“better?”
The answer, it turns out, isn’t so
clear cut. Style — specifically when
it relates to a beer’s hop content —
influences the shelf life of a beer,
as does packaging.
Bobbie Atkins, representative with
R&D Brewing/Bull Durham Beer Co
a local craft beer brewery explains:
Is draft beer always better? Draft
beer is definitely better than
bottled, but canned can be better
than draft. It depends. If you look at
trends, locally and nationally, most
breweries are moving to canning
beers. What that allows for is a
proper seal. Even in a glass bottle,
oxygen can leak in. So flushing cans
with carbon dioxide and sealing
a beer shut keeps it fresher for
longer. Cans also prevent light from
getting in, which can be an issue
with bottles, even brown bottles.
Light and oxygen are the enemies
of beer.
Draft beers usually move faster,
and if you’re replacing kegs more
often, that usually means fresher
beer. So, in terms of quality and
turnover, it’s draft, then cans, then
bottles.
Are there particular styles that
move faster than others? IPA‘s are
Generally speaking, for an IPA,
you want to consume it within a
month of it being brewed. Hop
quality begins to fade after about
30 days.
Are local beers usually indicative
of freshness? Yes and no. Local
beer has a tendency to be more
fresh, but it has to be good beer
to be fresh enough that you’ll go
through kegs of it.
What sort of questions should
someone ask a bartender in order
to get the best or freshest beer?
Let the bartender know what type of
beer you like. Knowing what kind of
beer you like gives the bartender a
starting point, even if it’s Heineken
or Guinness. Any good beer bar
will allow you a few tastes before
deciding on a beer.
According to Bobbie Atkins,
choosing the right bar is also really
important. You want a staff that’s
casual and approachable and
knowledgeable, not snooty. In
Seven Lakes these craft beers can
be found at the Lakehouse, Shell
Friendly Mart and the Sandhills
Winery. The Resolution beer the
golfers beer can be found locally at
Foxfire Resort and Pinewild CC.
Their Flagship beer “Seven
Saturdays“ an IPA @6.8 ABV you
can always enjoy at “Seven Lakes.“
The Flagship beer won a Silver
Medal at the US Open Beer
Championship. The brewing
company also brews Storm Beer
for the Carolina Hurricanes hockey
team.
So when you are out and about in
Seven Lakes make sure you try one
of these awesome beers
Seven Lakes residents are urged
to contribute an unwrapped toy to
the “Toys For Tots”, program with
so many families in need in Moore
County.
The Seven Lakes News has arranged
with the program to offer
numerous drop off locations
throughout Moore County. Our
family has been involved with this
program since the late 1980’s.
The program began as a Los Angeles
charitable effort in 1947.
Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, was
inspired by his wife Diane when
she tried to donate a homemade
Rag-gedy Ann doll to a needy child
but couldn’t find any organization
to do so.
At her suggestion he gathered a
NOVEMBER 9th
group of local local Marine reservists,
including Lieutenant Colonel
John Hampton, who coordinated
and collected some 5,000 toys for
local children that year from collection
bins placed outside of Warner
Bros. movie theaters.
Their efforts were so successful
that, in 1948, Toys for Tots was
launched as a national campaign.
Hendrix used his position as director
of Public Relations for Warner
Brothers Studio to enlist celebrity
support, as well as have Walt
Disney Studios design the red toy
train logo.
The new toys collected are redistributed
within each county to ensure
they are kept within the local
community, said Gunnery Sgt.
Robert Patterson, Toys for Tots
representative.
The program is designed for the
children to have something to
open on “Christmas,” Patterson
said. “If the family is struggling financially
or lost their jobs, we help
them with toys, and our homeless
and foster chil-dren are not forgotten
either.”
Donating money or toys can make
the holiday season for children a
very happy time.
“All toy donations will go to Moore
County kids with families in need
this Christmas Season.
Military Families To Go
Hungry At Thanksgiving?
Awaiting the arrival of the Feeding
San Diego truck that gives out free
groceries every other week the
vast majority are the husbands
and wives of U.S. military service
members.
I knew we wouldn‘t be wealthy,
but I thought it would be a lot
more manageable, said Desiree
Mieir, a mother of four whose Navy
husband‘s most recent deployment
lasted almost eight months. Mieir
can‘t afford cable and often leaves
her home‘s air conditioning shut off
to keep her utility bill down. I didn‘t
know I‘d have to try this hard.
To make ends meet, Mieir and
thousands of other military families
around the country routinely rely on
federal food assistance, charities
or loans from family. Their struggles
are caused by a variety of factors:
the high cost of living in cities like
San Diego, difficulty qualifying
for federal food assistance, and
a transient life that makes it
challenging for spouses to build
careers. Dan Mieir, her husband,
works in Naval communications
and makes $34,279 in basic pay
before taxes. That‘s just under the
federal poverty line for a family of
six in most of the country
Data obtained on 2018-19 school
year, a third of children at DODrun
schools on military bases in
the United States — more than
6,500 children — were eligible for
free or reduced lunches. At one
base — Georgia‘s Fort Stewart —
65 percent were eligible. 2017
data from an annual Census
Bureau survey showed that more
than 16,000 active-duty service
members received food stamps,
known as the Supplemental
Nutrition Assistance Program, or
SNAP.
I think it is a national outrage,“ Sen.
Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., a former
army helicopter pilot, said. Can you
imagine being deployed and you‘re
in the Persian Gulf, or you‘re in
Iraq right now, and you‘re worried
whether or not your kids are able to
have a meal? We‘re willing to spend
hundreds and hundreds of millions
of dollars on a fighter jet — which I
want our troops to have — to carry
them into battle, Duckworth said.
But if the people that are working
on them can‘t focus on turning the
wrenches and maintaining the
equipment because they‘re worried
whether or not their kids are
hungry, what‘s the point of having
that fighter jet?
When she‘s not getting free food
from Feeding San Diego, Carlisle
normally shops at the military
commissary, which is tax-free, or
at Ralph‘s, a grocery store in San
Diego where purchases of food
accrue points she can use on gas.
You don‘t need to decide, do I
need gas, or do I need food? If you
sneeze hard, a flat tire goes out,
that‘s it, she said.
The lower-ranked enlisted service
members in all branches, those
with pay grades from E-1 to
E-5, make somewhere between
$18,648 and $40,759 in basic pay,
depending on their rank and years
of service.
Operation Homefront is a national
nonprofit whose mission is to build
strong, stable, and secure military
families so they can thrive — not
simply struggle to get by — in the
communities they have worked so
hard to protect.
At Operation Homefront, 92
percent of expenditures goes
directly toward delivering programs
and services to the military families
who need it most.
different programs. The most popular
OS used among the smartphone
owners is Google’s Android,
which tops the global end-user OS
market share with over 75 percent
of user base. The iPhone, on the
other hand, uses the Apple’s very
own iOS mobile operating system,
which was formerly known as the
iPhone OS.
As for the 2.8 million apps Android
undoubtedly accounts for majority
of user base yet Apple outperforms
on revenue with most in-app
Now, that is cool.
I don’t know about you, but I tend
to connect my phones to other
All Android devices use
standard USB ports, so there are
many gadgets you can connect
to your phone. With iPhones, you
need something that will connect
with its proprietary Lightning port.
Cameras vary wildly on Android
phones. That said, the Galaxy S8,
hardware as the S7, does seem to
from $49 (for a basic iPhone 8)
on the model you want. iPhone
data service, calling, texting, and
other services. Expect to spend
around $100 a month with major
Babe Ruth Bat
Going To Auction
The bat used by Babe Ruth to slug
his 500th career home run in 1929
is going up for auction, nearly 75
years after he gave it to a friend
whose family has kept it ever since.
Ruth became the first player to
reach the coveted plateau on Aug.
11, 1929, hitting a solo shot for the
New York Yankees off Willis Hudlin
at League Park in Cleveland.
In the mid-1940s, Ruth gave the
bat to his friend Jim Rice, who was
mayor of Suffern, New York. Ruth
and Rice enjoyed golfing, bowling
and dining together, and Ruth
was a regular visitor to the Rice
household, where he came to know
Jim‘s wife, Ethyl, and their children.
Terry Rice, an attorney in Suffern
and Jim‘s only son, is selling the
bat. Born two years after Ruth
died in 1948, Rice more closely
associates Mickey Mantle and Yogi
Berra with the Yankees of his youth,
but he remembers Ruth‘s bat sat in
the corner behind the television in
the family‘s den.
It was always there. It was part of
life. No one said I couldn‘t touch
it. I never took it out and played
baseball with it.“
Good thing, too, since the bat
was recently authenticated and
received the highest grade given.
It‘s in perfect condition.
The Louisville Slugger shows marks
on the upper barrel where Ruth
knocked mud off his cleats. The
left barrel has impressions where
the bat made contact with the ball.
There‘s also a bit of green paint
from where the bat rested in the
dugout between uses.
Babe Ruth is the king of the
sports collectibles marketplace,
SCP Auctions President David
Kohler said. When a fresh Ruth
item of such quality and historical
importance as this one surfaces, it
generates tremendous excitement
throughout our industry.
Ruth‘s 500th homer cleared the
right-field wall in Cleveland, sailed
out of the park and rolled down
Lexington Avenue, where it was
plucked by an Indians fan. After
the game, the ball was returned to
Ruth in exchange for $20 and his
autograph.
It would be another 16 years before
Mel Ott became the second player
to reach 500 homers in 1945.
After Jim Rice died in 1983, his wife
kept possession of the bat until her
death in 1997. Then it passed to
Terry Rice and was stashed in a
closet.
You couldn‘t leave it out, Rice said.
I wasn‘t enjoying it. I got to the point
where we were worried about it.“
Rice, 69, talked to his two older
sisters before deciding to sell. They
plan to split the proceeds.
Officials from SCP Auctions in
Laguna Niguel, California, estimate
the bat could sell for over $1 million.
SCP sold Ruth‘s bat used to homer
on Opening Day of the 1923
season at Yankee Stadium for
$1.26 million in 2004. Rice said he
hopes the Yankees or the Baseball
Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New
York, would be interested in the bat.
Online bidding begins Nov. 27th.
Traffic delays in and around
Seven Lakes won‘t be getting any
better now that the 211 widening
project has been postponed and
put on hold. NC DOT has recently
announced that approximately
900 highway construction and
resurfacing projects including the
road widening project here in West
End which was scheduled to begin
in 2020 are presently on hold due
to financial constraints.
DOT claims a deficit on a rash of
storm related events including
Hurricanes Florence and Matthew
which took annual weather related
road repairs from an average of
$65 mm to an unprecedented level
of approximately $220 million.
How this shortfall will be corrected
remains to be seen. NCDOT’s main
source of funding which include tax
revenues may fall short as fuel tax
revenues, the biggest source for
DOT’s funding, continue to decline
with vehicles becoming more fuelefficient
and people driving less.
That won’t make closing the the
gap in DOT’s shortfall very easy to
correct and overcome.
The lack of funding and the
beginning of road widening work
for the local Hwy 211 improvement
project must be considered by the
new golf tournaments in 2022 with
the US Women’s Open and the
prestigious US Open in 2024. The
delay is also a consequence of the
timing of these two golf events and
the massive traffic flow that will
transpire locally.
Most important to Seven Lakes
residents is the fact that the
eyesore that is present to the
“Gateway To Seven Lakes” which
is under contract will continue to
progress.
The Stanley Furniture plant will
be demolished and will stay on
schedule until completion.
My wife and I planned a trip to look for a retirement home in Virginia and North Carolina, we enlisted the help of 5 agents along the
route. Toward the end of the trip I came across a home in Seven Lakes. After convincing my wife to go a little further into NC, I
called Beverly, who was not an agent we had on our list. Beverly was the consumate PROFESSIONAL and agreed to meet us on less
than 8 hours notice. She was extremely knowlegeable about the property and Seven Lakes. We finalized a contract on the house.
The purchase was not an easy one, in fact we actually gave up on the property for a period of 1 month. Beverly handled all road
blocks with the utmost professionalism and was ALWAYS ON OUR SIDE. If you are looking for "THE" agent to handle your real
estate needs, look no further than to Beverly Gentry! - Bill Gialanella
Dollar Store, Dollar Store..
Everywhere A Dollar Store
Dollar stores are everywhere in the
United States today and depending
on where you live, you could even
have more than one on your street.
Whether its Dollar Tree, Family
Dollar, Dollar General, or some
random 99 cent store, the dollar
store business is booming.
When my husband Rick and I lived
in Lake Tahoe, CA the closest
dollar store was in Reno, NV so we
decided to open a dollar store we
named “$1 Depot.” I managed
the store while Rick remained
with his real estate development
company. Our friends thought it
would be a flop but it was a hit and
I opened several other stores for
our company until we sold them 4
years later.
The stores offered all of the dollar
store items with the exception of
food to the background sounds
of the Beach boys. Everything
from wine glasses to sunglasses
that we purchased on trips down
to Los Angeles to order with split
container loads from China. Most
of the research that was done for
this story I became aware of for the
first time since we sold the stores
in 2004.
Ready for some mind-blowing
statistics? There are more
dollar stores in the United States
today than McDonald‘s and they
outnumber Walmart and Starbucks
— combined!
While these stores where
everything cost a dollar (or just a
few dollars) are great for picking
up random odds and ends, they‘re
far from perfect. Stroll through the
aisles of any dollar store and you‘ll
notice pretty quickly just how much
plastic is on the shelves which
may contain hazardous chemical
by products. In May 2019, Dollar
Tree — which owns Family Dollar,
Dollar General, and the 99 Cents
Only Store — said that it would work
to phase out lead and dangerous
chemicals from its products.
Too many dollar stores concentrated
in a single area doesn‘t just impact
local business; it can also have a
negative impact on a community‘s
health. Many dollar stores don‘t
carry produce or offer the option of
grocery delivery to senior citizens,
and when they force smaller
grocery stores to close they create
food deserts.
When Dollar General moved into
Haven KS, Foodliner Grocery saw
its customer base dwindle and
within a few years had to shut down.
Foodliner‘s story is a common one
in regards to the rise of dollar stores
across the United States.
Dollar stores can be fantastic places
for buying things like greeting cards
for that relative you only see once a
decade. Some of those dollar deals
though really just aren‘t so great.
For example, you‘re probably better
off shopping for things like vitamins
at grocery stores and drug stores,
rather than your local Dollar Tree.
For all the negatives associated
with the rapid growth of dollar
stores, according to one survey,
the majority of Americans still have
a positive view of dollar stores —
regardless of the dollar store brand.
Estate Silver –
Good Find or Goodwill?
Ever wonder if that old silver
tray collecting dust on top of the
refrigerator is worth something?
One of the primary factors in
determining the value of anything
“silver” is whether it is made from
sterling silver or if it is simply silver
plate.
Sterling silver consists of 92.5%
pure silver and 7.5% copper alloy,
while silver plate is comprised of a
base metal such as copper, brass,
or stainless steel that has been
electroplated with sterling silver.
Silver plate became popular in the
late 1800s and made silverware
more affordable for the masses.
Sterling items are typically
stamped with either “925” or the
words “sterling” to indicate their
composition.
Pieces produced in Great Britain
often have a small lion hallmark, in
addition to other marks that may
indicate the city, date, or maker.
On the other hand, silver plate
items may be stamped with “silver
plate”, “EPNS” (Electro-plated
Nickel Silver), or “German Silver”.
Older pieces may exhibit wear
spots from use, exposing the base
metal beneath. They can be replated
by a jeweler or even through
“do-it-yourself” kits.
Items made from sterling are
always worth at least their value in
silver, which is currently a bit more
than $16 an ounce.
Simply look-up “Scrap Silver
Calculator” online and enter in the
weight of your pieces to get a rough
estimate of what’s called the “spot”
value.
If you decided to sell your sterling
items for their silver value, be
aware that a fee is usually charged
for the transaction and to cover the
cost of refining the metal.
Both sterling and silver plate pieces
can increase in value, depending
upon the manufacturer or intricacy
of the object.
Silver items made by high-end
designers such as Tiffany & Co.,
Cartier, Buccellati, and Georg
Jensen can often command a 100
% - 300% + premium above their
scrap value.
Some large and ornate silver plate
centerpieces, desk accessories,
and other decorative objects have
potential to sell for hundreds or
even thousands of dollars, too.
So next time that you’re getting
ready to use Grandma’s silver
service, take a moment to turn it
over and see what it’s made of.
Its value might just surprise you.
Seven Lakes Performers In Sunrise Theatre‘s
Production of the Live Community Radio Play,
“It‘s A Wonderful Life“
The story is about a man who spent
his life giving to the people of his
hometown. When his world falls
apart, he’s given the rare chance of
seeing what life would be like if he
had never been born.
t’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio
Play is based on the classic holiday
movie with a clever twist thrown
in: the story is staged as a live
radio broadcast. Actors portray
numerous characters, and sound
effects. It’s a Wonderful Life is
about the life of George Bailey, a
generous and well-meaning man
who has become too downcast and
tired to continue living.
It will take help from a lovable angel
to show George what life would be
like if he wasn’t born for George
to have a change of heart and
understand the true spirit of the
holidays.
Strange, isn‘t it? Each man‘s life
touches so many other lives. When
he isn‘t around he leaves an awful
hole, doesn‘t he?
Remember, George: no man is
a failure who has friends. Great
quotes from the movie. It‘s A
Wonderful Life spoken by Clarence
to George Bailey.
The Sunrise Theater is a thriving
entertainment center featuring first
run and independent films, music
concerts, local theater, and live
broadcasts of the Met Opera and
Bolshoi Ballet. The Sunrise Theater
continues to be the cornerstone
of theater arts and entertainment
in the North Carolina Sandhills
dedicated to serving the community.
Adapted from Frank Capra’s holiday
classic the Radio Play version, a
1940’s radio station is the setting
and actors are radio station
employees and actors producing
an old-fashioned radio show of the
timeless story.
This beloved American holiday
classic comes to captivating life as
a live 1940s radio broadcast. With
the help of an ensemble that brings
a few dozen characters to the stage,
the story of idealistic George Bailey
unfolds as he considers ending his
life one fateful Christmas Eve.
The cast of the Sunrise’s community
theater production of It’s A
Wonderful Life Radio Play is set
with local actors Dustin Bonecutter
as George Bailey, Jordan Cranford
as Mary Hatch Bailey, and Eric
VonSalzen as Clarence, the angel
trying to earn his wings. The play is
sponsored by McClain Drug.
The radio station announcer, Peter
Bailey and four other characters
are all played by Patrick Kelly;
Glenn Hussein portrays the evil Mr.
Potter; Rebecca Mourouzis is Violet
Bick; and Nick Dokich is Joseph,
the angel guiding Clarence through
his challenge.
A talented group of young actors
take on multiple roles with Sarah
Archer as Young George and Janie;
Quinn Augustine as Young Mary
and Zuzu; Emma Spisak as Young
Violet and Pete; and Stephen Makie
is Young Harry and Tommy.
Rounding out the cast are
multitalented and versatile actors
who are able to play numerous
roles each, creating several
personalities with only their voices.
Randy Merritt is Mr. Gower, Uncle
Billy, Ernie, Shultz and the sheriff;
Jamie Barnes is Matilda, Ruth, Mrs.
Hatch, Mrs. Thompson, and Sadie
Vance; Loretta Aldridge is Rose,
Charlie and the Bridge Keeper; and
Michael Florence is Bert, Harry,
Sam, Dr. Campbell, Martini, and
Nick.
The play is being co-directed by
Sunrise House Managers Claire
Sellers and Killian Poplyk. Claire
holds a Bachelor of Arts in Stage
Directing & Management from
Greensboro College and was
previously the Executive Intern with
North Carolina Theatre Conference
(NCTC).
She has held various production
roles at Triad Stage along with
many theatrical credits in stage
management, directing, house
managing, and sound design.
He’s worked in various technical
roles for theatre productions and
Seven Lakes resident Randy Merritt
plays Mr. Gower. Randy is a retired
television news/sports director
who relocated to Seven Lakes from
Charlotte in 2006. With his wife
Ronda, he is the owner of Friendly
Marts in Seven Lakes and Robbins.
Although Randy has never acted
before, he’s wanted to for 55
years. His love of the story and the
opportunity to be in a community
theater production rekindled this
aspiration.
Michael Florence lives in Seven
Lakes and is the owner of Record
has announced for many local
events over the years including
Autumnfest, Chamber events,
loves theatrical illusions and the
challenge of bringing so many
characters to life in one show.
Michael Florence plays Bert in the
Radio Play.
BEVERLY GENTRY
My goal as a real estate professional
is to establish a relationship with
you that will continue for years to
come. I treat every client with the
same care and diligence I would
use to successfully purchase or sell
my own home. I am very grateful to
those clients who have become
friends or like family and have
made me their Realtor of choice.
I‘ve had the pleasure of helping
hundreds of consumers with their
real estate needs. My skill sets are
varied from first-time home buyers,
investors, builders and sellers
across all price ranges. I started
my real estate career at the bottom
of the market. I take nothing for
granted and have learned it doesn‘t
matter how seasoned you may be
as an agent, real estate is an ever
changing business that requires
out of the box thinking and true
dedication.
I am from the area originally and
returned “home“ after living in
multiple states across the country.
When my husband and I decided to
return to the area after starting our
family, we knew Seven Lakes was
the right choice for us. We both
have incredible memories from
our childhood growing up in the
community and wanted the same
for our children.
The West side was not fully
developed and Lake Auman did not
yet exist. It‘s incredible to see that
beautiful lake and recall what it was
910-975-0399
like before it 500303 was there. _ ADVANTAGE There were
many nights of meeting up with the
other neighborhood kids on what
is now the island. We travel down
memory lane often while enjoying
the amenities with our children. It‘s
funny the stories that are triggered
seeing our children in the same
settings we were in so many years
ago as children ourselves. While I
love all of Moore County and the
other amazing communities we are
so fortunate to have, Seven Lakes
is special to my family.
We own homes on the South and
West side. My parents recently
returned to the area and are
residents on the North side. I am
a Gold level Corporate Sponsor for
West End Elementary PTA and also
serve on the School Improvement
Team.
I love exploring all of Moore County
with my clients. My seller clients
find that I am communicative and
fully understand trends in the
market that will impact the sale of
their homes. I work with each seller
to customize a plan specific to their
unique needs. For my buyer clients,
I take the role of an adviser and
guide the process based on their
personality.
I understand that sometimes a
buyer or seller just aren‘t ready
to get started but are seeking
information without pressure. I‘m
here to provide you with knowledge
so that you can make an informed
decision when the timing is right for
you. I welcome your call to see how
I can help you accomplish your real
estate goals. 910-975-0399

While our dogs will be very unlikely
to understand the meaning of the
winter holiday season, there will
often be guests visiting, and in the
subsequent bustle, it will be easier
for your dog to bring harm upon
himself. Keeping in mind that the
holidays can present dangers to
dogs, and understanding what those
dangers might be can help guarantee
that your best friend will be in
good shape to greet the New Year.
Thanksgiving, Christmas and the
holiday season in general will see
a great deal of candy in evidence,
including chocolates. Chocolate is
poisonous to dogs - the problem
element is theobromine, and it will
not take much to make a dog sick,
or even cause the dog’s death. The
darker the chocolate, the more danger
for your dog.
Skip giving your best friend your fruit
cake this year, too. Grapes and raisins
are both poisonous to dogs. Any
other cookie or cake that contains
raisins, almonds, or currents should
be on the forbidden list. Dieters who
are substituting xylitol for sugar to
save on calories should keep any
treats prepared with this sweetener
away from their dog. Xylitol will
cause a rapid and potentially fatal
drop in blood sugar in dogs.
The holidays mean that a great deal
of fatty food will be in evidence, and
fat trimmed from ham, roasts, or
the roast bird can pose problems for
your dog. Too much fat can bring on
an episode of pancreatitis, which is
can also lodge in the esophagus.
Those lovely snow globes often have
an antifreeze-based fl uid inside
them. If these break, a dog could lap
up poison that could cause kidney
failure. It’s no secret that people
tend to consume a greater than
normal amount of alcoholic beverages
during the holidays, and some of
these can be attractive to your dog,
especially a drink like eggnog. Holiday
punch may also smell good to a
dog, so keep any drinks that contain
alcohol well out of the dog’s reach.
Puppies, and some older dogs, too,
will often chew on electrical cords.
While you may have taken care to
keep your usual cords safe from
canine teeth, lights on the tree and
other decorations can present additional
hazards, so take care to keep
all pets away from electric cords.
Don’t let your dog get lost outside
during the holidays. With the arrival
of company, the door will be open for
much longer than it is usually, and a
dog that has become nervous with
all the new people and happenings
may bolt out.
Making sure that your dog is wearing
his or her tags or has been
micro-chipped are ways of assuring
that you will get your lost pooch back
as quickly as possible. Keeping your
dog safe and healthy over the holiday
season isn’t diffi cult; it just takes
a bit of forethought and planning.
The water in the reservoir is also a
danger for cats. Sap from the tree
ILL GET YOU MORE ANIMAL STUFF FOR
NEW SCRIPT FOR HUMANE SOCIETY
Every year, hundreds of homeless
animals pass through the doors of
the Moore Humane Society’s “no-kill”
shelter. Virtually all of these homeless,
abandoned or abused animals require
some degree of medical care ranging
from minor to extensive.
SAVE AN ANIMAL · SAVE A LIFE
While our willingness to help is
unlimited, our financial resources are
not. In 2017 we spent $45,000. to
cover veterinary costs for life-saving
operations and to cover spay-neuter
procedures. This year due to extensive
injuries our costs will easily exceed
$50,000. Please help us raise the
money we need to continue providing
our furry friends with the best medical
care they so much deserve.
All donations are tax-deductible as we
Back in the early 70’s while going to
college at the University of Georgia
in Athens, my roommate being from
Augusta got his hands on some 4
day Series Badges for the Masters.
We all crashed at his house and had
a blast.
One of the things I most
remember is not the “Golden Bear”
winning in 72’ , but all of the food
and drinks being so cheap.
This is the first time I had the “privilege”
of having a pimento cheese
sandwich. It is as special as Rae’s
Creek, the Green Jacket or Amen
Corner at the Masters.
What you can devour is a sandwich
of two names and five ingredients,
a quick item to grab at the Masters
concession stands.
Some call it the “Caviar of the South”.
It comes sealed in green plastic, a
color that blends in with the Augusta
National in case the wrapper goes
fl ying around.
They drink mint juleps at the Kentucky
Derby, and eat Big Dodger
Dogs in L. A. No one is sure how the
Pimento Cheese Sandwich became
the signature taste of the Masters,
beginning with its debut in 1934.
None of this is new to Allison, who has
been an animal lover since she can
remember. “Once we found Splash
and Dash, we knew we’d found the
perfect fit for us and for the community
we envisioned bringing it to!” said
Allison, who grew up with family dogs
and cats and got her first horse when
she was 13 years old.
While in college, she studied both
public relations and equine business.
After multiple deployments to the
Middle East, Scott took a job in 2010
as an instructor where he would not
be deployed for a few years.
Scott had so many great experiences
with military working dogs that he
thought a Belgian Malinois would be
a great fit.
That’s when Jackie, a Belgian Malinois,
entered his life. Jackie is his
constant companion and triathlon
training partner.
When Allison and Scott found Splash
and Dash Groomerie and Boutiques,
they knew that they had found the
next leg of their journey.
They chose Splash and Dash because
of the family values that they
both share. “Splash and Dash treats
pets as family and we do too” said Allison.
Christmas 4 Moore in Need of
Sponsors to Serve an
Additional 100 Families
Christmas for Moore, a local nonprofit,
served more than 300 families in
2016 with basic needs and gifts for
area children with a goal of not leaving
any empty stockings for those
who registered last year. Everyone
was served who applied.
Four events held last month throughout
the county have demonstrated an
even greater need for 2017, with an
additional 100 families, or 350 individuals,
including children and adults
are still in need of adoption.
Working with these local families
and recognizing the needs exceed
available sponsorships, Christmas
for Moore’s dedicated volunteers are
seeking local businesses, churches
and individuals to help ensure these
families too, find joy in the upcoming
season of giving.
Christmas for Moore has had very
generous sponsors in the past, and
we need their continued support,
said Eleanora Voelkel, one of the
group’s volunteers and steering com-
However, this year, “we need new
sponsors to come forward and offer a
helping hand, she added. Each family
who registered was told that we will
do our best to sponsor them, and,
in the past, we have always found
a sponsor for each family. We pray
this year will be the same and that no
family will need to be turned away.”
Sponsors are matched with an individual
or family and choose how to
support the needs. A Food Lion Gift
card based on the size of the family
is given to provide a Christmas meal.
Those interested in sponsoring a
family or making a donation to the
group may contact
has been so blessed in the process
of providing gifts and food for these,
our local neighbors in time of need.
Every family truly appreciates and
needs the support of their community,
of the most important items that
needs to be covered is the care of
their pets and home.
When they retired three years ago
they had issues with finding a
responsible, capable and person
to care for their dogs when they
traveled.
This led to considering their own
business focusing on the things
that were most important to them
now that they had the time in
retirement.
They will be happy to stay in your
home with your pets or just visit,
feed, water and walk your dogs
however many times a day are
needed.
Text and emailed pictures of your
animals while you are away is one
way to enhance your travels and is
SEVEN LAKES EYE CARE
PROVIDES SERVICES TO
RESIDENTS IN COSTA RICA
A team of four from Dr. Kavanaugh’s
Seven Lakes Eye Care office located
in Seven Lakes along with 13 others
from Christ Community Church
traveled to the slums in Guarari,
Costa Rica to provide eyecare and
Rx glasses to residents.
This was a mission trip which
involved providing eye care to
approximately 500 residents living
in this impoverished area of Costa
Rica.
In Costa Rica, there are 305,231
households in poverty, and 86,663
households in extreme poverty,
according to data from the 2017
National Household Survey
(ENAHO).
Three days were spent in Guarari,
and a fourth day included a visit to
a small church by the public dump
facility in a nearby city.
The young woman pictured with the
baby, for the first time was able to
see the features of her baby. Many
had problems due to poor diet,
(mostly rice) and the overall poor
living conditions contributed to the
needs.
Dr. Barry Kavanaugh, wife Penny,
daughter Macie, and Marliss
Horsley from the Seven Lakes Eye
Care office traveled to Guarari,
Costa Rica to provide the residents
with this humanitarian service.
Peter Bishop, a resident of Seven
Lakes West accompanied the
group.
Many other volunteers as members
of the team are part of the Christ
Community Church, located in West
End and assisted in this“Global
Outreach Program.”
With thanks to U.S. Representative
Richard Hudson, North Carolina
8th Congressional District, three
American flags flown over the U.S.
Capitol on September 11, 2019 will
now fly over Seven Lakes.
Steve Hudson, a relative and Seven
Lakes resident, presented the
first flag to the Seven Lakes Fire
Department.
The remaining two flags were given
to the SLLA Board of Directors and
will be flown at the North and South
gates.
The 9/11 flag program was started
in remembrance of those who lost
their lives at the World Trade Center,
Pentagon, and the Shanksville,
Pennsylvania site.
The flags were also flown in honor of
all of those first responder heroes
who risked their lives to shepherd
survivors to safety on that tragic
day.
The flags represent the 2,977
victims of the September 11, 2001
attacks on the World Trade Center,
Pentagon, United Airlines Flight 93
and First Responders. It is a great
honor to have these special flags fly
in our community.
Seven Lakes Garden Club made a
mini Field Trip to McLendon Hills
to the home of Chuck and Dorrie
Kayser and their horses. Those
two horses produce fifty pounds of
waste product every day. Chuck
has developed a wonderful system
for composting the organic waste
so that it can be spread on their
pastures with no negative impact
to the surrounding ecosystem.
Chuck uses the O2Compost system
developed in 2001.
Chuck (with shovel) talks to SLGC.
Simple to operate and convert a
waste problem into a resource
opportunity. The Aerated Static
Pile compost method optimizes the
process and mitigates problems
such as odor, flies and adverse
impacts to water quality. He can
then use the ultra-rich compost
on his garden or sell it in 40 lb
bags. Garden Club members eagerly
purchased many bags from
his stock! Chuck and Dorrie feed
and bed their horses with 100%
organic materials. Healthy horses
and great compost.
Their motto is “Helping Veterans, Communities
and Those Serving in Harm‘s Way.“
The Chapel in the Pines with the
Seven Lakes Fire Department, First
Bank, the NS Homeowners Assoc,
Seven Lakes News, area friends,
and neighbors has taken on the
mission of assisting a long-time
resident, suffering from ALS, or
as it is better known, Lou Gehrig
Disease.
Matt Northcutt-- Benefit November 16th
Matt Northcutt, 44, long time resident
of Seven Lakes, became a
First Responder, and with his wife
Tammy are raising their three young
children in Seven Lakes.
He became one of the first
Policemen on the Seven Lakes
Force, then joined the Fire
Company, drove the ambulance,
and finally, became an EMT. While
a volunteer EMT he was employed
by the NC State Employment
Security Commission working with
farmers in up to five surrounding
counties. He had to resign from
the Fire· Company when his ALS
progressed. The State eventually
gave him a handicapped equipped
van in order to continue working
with those farmers. Recently he
had to resign from that job. Then
Tammy, who worked for First
Health Family Medicine in Seven
Lakes, had to resign to assist Matt
at home. This leaves them without
an income, but with medical bills
and living expenses.
Our Mission is to hold a Benefit
for Matt on November 16th from
12:30 pm to 4:30 pm, at the
Chapel in the Pines and we are
looking for donations from our local
businesses to add to our Silent
Auction on that day.
We already have some baskets
donated by Seven Lakes
businesses and residents and
are looking for whatever you have
in your heart to donate to help us
assist Matt and Tammy meet their
medical expenses.
It is our hope we can raise at
least $10,000 to assist them, but
can only do it with the help of the
Community. We need to show this
young family our appreciation for
all they have given us during their
young lives.
Can you, will you help us?
Blessings on you all...
