NDT editor announces shrinking paper!
Simone Roberts as Editor of Northern District Times and three other Murdoch
owned Cumberland Newspapers weekly titles bravely wrote from her Parramatta
bunker that the NDT from today will be printed in a new compact (smaller)
format.
“This is to ensure the long-term sustainability of our community newspapers”,
she said. “As part of these changes for 2019 our focus is to get closer to our community”
- from Parramatta HQ?
Simone says in a syndicated message to all 14 Cumberland titles “as editor of
the Northern District Times I am proud of the role we play in our community and
the connection we share with our readers”.
Meanwhile The Weekly Times continues to serve first and foremost its clearly
Private certifiers
at a dizzy pace
Dear Sir,
With the maddening
rush by state government
/ councils / developers
in Sydney, certifiers
must be dizzy as
can be.
Who will fix these places
up in a year or so from
now, as its so easy for
the controlling authorities
to give the green light
and bypass all residents
concerns who live in the
area surrounding these
monstrosities?
Time to stop all this,
but alas it’s too late, the
damage has already begun.
PAUL DAWSON
Ryde
In defence of
good politicians
Dear Sir,
“Everyone talks about
the bad politicians but
forget the good one”.
This is said by my friend
Timothy, I couldn’t agree
more.
There are ample
amounts of criticism,
constructive or useless.
The need of discovering
and praising the beauty
and integrity is urgent.
I am not a party member,
but I wish to reveal
the beautiful side of politicians.
Here is the quotation
from Timothy.
“Victor has stood with
the community before to
stop developments at 6
Lexcen place and blocking
25 storeys at Meadowbank.
Mr Dominello has also
saved Smalls Road, Tennis
World, Blenheim Park
and has been pushing to
preserve TG Milner field.
Victor’s advocacy and
willingness to break party
lines has secured a development
freeze for every
Council area including
a two-year development
freeze in Ryde, even
though planning laws are
outside Mr Dominello’s
own portfolio”.
RON CHEN
Rhodes
Remember no man
is an island
Dear Sir,
Head racist of the letters
page, Tony Ikonomou,
has ended the
year with his final rant
which started out being
about over population
and over development
but inevitably ended
with his a plea for us to
only accept immigrants
from North America
and Europe.
A few points come out
of his predictable blatherings.
Much of the blame for
inappropriate development,
and in some cases
over development, can
be sheeted home to incompetent
local and
state governments along
with really poor building
and design standards.
Those public authorities
should also take responsibility
for not keeping
pace with the appropriate
infrastructure required
to support our
growing population i.e.
schools, hospitals, public
transport, parks, open
space etc.
They are addicted to
the developers fees and
blind to the community
needs.
However we need our
Letters to the Editor
population to grow.
Without growth we will
not have the tax revenue
to cover the costs of an
ageing society.
Immigrants deliver for
all of us and our community
a better place financially
and socially as a result.
Diversity helps us all
especially when we live
on an island continent.
Our country is a
wealthy one and we have
a global responsibility to
help those less fortunate
than ourselves.
It is a fact that the majority
of those people are
going to come from Asia,
Africa, the Middle East
and the Pacific.
These are the places
where there are war
zones, oppressive regimes,
famines, climate
refugees and a range of
troubled populations.
The words chiselled
into the foundation of
the Statue of Liberty are
worth remembering at
this time of year:
“Give me your tired
your poor, your huddled
masses yearning to
breathe free”.
It pays to remember no
man is an island.
MARK NEWMAN
Hunter’s Hill
Opposiing view to
Hunters Hill Day
Dear Sir,
In his attempt to justify
the self-congratulation
and vanity of
“Hunter’s Hill Day”,
former councillor Peter
Astridge regales us
with a long-winded list
of incidents where the
community and council
came together for the
public good.
What he fails to acknowledge
are the times
when Hunter’s Hill Council
acted in defiance of
the clear community
view.
The most notable recent
example of this arrogance
was the development
of the Hunter’s
Hill Hotel site. In the face
of unanimous opposing
motions passed at large
public meetings and
scores of lodged objections,
the Council bent
its own rules to approve
this blatant over-development.
The precedent was
then set and we now
have three other large
developments that have
destroyed the previously
quiet, community atmosphere
of the village precinct.
Mr Astridge was a
member of Council when
it approved those developments.
It is all very well for him
to now boast about “all
the victories we have
won over the years”.
Many of us are more
likely to remember the
times when our Council
acted against the interests
of its electors.
Hunter’s Hill
Extraordinary meeting
on Macpark towers
Dear Sir,
Attended the second
Extra Ordinary Council
Meeting on December 4,
2018 re: Meriton Towers
proposal at 112 Talavera
a planning proposal submitted
by Meriton for a 63
storey tower at the above
location, altered to 42
floors, immediately prior to
the meeting.
What followed was
an exceedingy extra-
“ordinary”meeting thanks
to the contribution by the
only two Liberal councillors
on duty.
The senior Trenton (not
Trent please) Brown and
his apprentice Jordan Lane
who delivered an emotional
(and bordering on apoplexy
at times), very nasty
and personal diatribes directed
principally at Mayor
Jerome Laxale.
Of course they have every
right to push their case,
but the arrogant born to
rule tone grates a little! The
speakers claim the Mayor
has already given approval
for the Meriton project and
that the minority liberal
councillors represent overwhelming
opposition from
the residents.
Hopefully the public gallery
conga line of Liberal
sycophants hanging off
their every word are not
representative of the majority
of sensible residents.
In view of the venom exhibited
by both speakers,
the right thing for them to
do was oppose the Mayor’s
recommendation.
Of course this whole liberal
circus is nothing to do
with common sense, and
was all engineered by local
MP Victor Dominello, who
has been pedalling his own
series of porkies on this
matter, as he is in real danger
of losing the Ryde seat.
Notwithstanding, Mr
Dominello who is celebrating
ten years in parliament,
seems under the illusion he
has been all anti-development
for that duration.
To borrow one of the
many great lines of Paul
Keating - “if you believe
that, then you must believe
in fairies at the bottom of
the garden”.
Underpinning all the frivolity,
two facts persist,
that should give the punters
a pretty good clue as
how the State is thinking
about the development issue:
* The Meriton site in
question has been rezoned
residential.
* The State Government
has established two
planned precincts for increased
development in
Ryde, thus expect more to
follow!
Mr Dominello is puffed
up like a frill necked lizard
having gained from his
close factional buddy Gladys
Berejiklian, an “assurance
review” by the Greater
Sydney Commission,
with the respected Lucy
Turnbull as Chief Commissioner.
TAFE Courses to
be run in Clubs
Dear Sir,
Destruction of TAFE
is one of the legacies
of the O’Farrell, Baird
and Berejiklian Governments
.
When the O’Farrell Government
took office in
2011 TAFE was the envy
of the world for training of
tradies.
Now under Minister for
Skills John Barilaro Smart
and Skilled Program has
led to the sacking of
5,500 TAFE teachers and
the closure of 27 TAFE colleges
– 21 of which are in
country areas.
Because of the closures
TAFE colleges courses will
be conducted in Clubs.
TAFE management stuff
ups has caught the eye of
the NSW Auditor General
who criticised the NSW
government for the $531
million bungled TAFE computer
system (EBS) and
the wasted $140 million
dollars in its Smart and
Skilled Program.
TONY MORRISSEY
Mascot
History repeating
itself in Spain?
Dear Sir,
Approximately in 1973
when I was a very young
girl, I joined together with
a group of Boy Scouts in
the city where I lived.
We wore an elegant uniform:
a shirt with the insignia
of the fleur-de-lis and
a magnificent “scarf” that
made us feel very elegant.
A Sunday afternoon
when we returned from an
excursion, we were surprised
by a group of Falangists
that approached
us, surrounded us and
began to insult us, calling
us separatists, renegades
and things with strong language.
They tore off from me the
badge I had on my shirt
and kicked it. People began
to come to see what
was happening and at the
end they go away, leaving
us quite injured and frightened.
Last week a similar situation
happened with the
participants in the World
Youth Days in Madrid, but
on this occasion, instead
of being the Falangists, the
attack was executed by
the Laicists that act in the
same way as the singleparty
State acted 38 years
ago, also moved by the
hate of freedom.
The big difference is that
at least up until now, we
have lived in a democracy
where everyone can feel
free.
However, negative signs
promoted by an extremely
low fundamentalist minority
are starting to appear.
They try to suppress by
force manifestations of
other people who do not
think like them.
Wouldn’t it be that the
current Left in Spain is
considering to re-establish
another dictatorship? A
dictatorship that was hard
to overcome.
Some may face challenges
because they are sick,
to help them overcome
these challenges.
It’s only because of
PUBLIC SPEAKING
is the number one
fear of many people.
However, there are
many skills that can be
learned to improve your
confidence and ability to
communicate.
Toastmasters is a not
for profit educational
organisation that teaches
public speaking and
leadership skills through
its network of clubs
around the world.
Enrolling in a
Speechcraft course or
joining a Toastmasters
club is a great way
to learn and practice
speaking in a supportive
and friendly environment.
Hunters
day situations.
We provide a mutually
supportive environment
that allows people to
learn how to speak in
public with clarity and
become more assertive
and confident.
By participating in
Toastmasters’ proven
program, you can realise
dramatic improvements
in many areas of your life.
In your career,
communication with your
employer and colleagues
as you learn to speak
up with confidence and
clarity.
Your interactions with
family and friends will
become easier, more
enjoyable and more
fulfilling.
Toastmasters can
Incredible eight year old conquers Mount Everest
AN eight year old Concord girl has achieved the astonishing feat of being
one of an elite group of young athletes to reach Base Camp on Mount
Everest in winter.
Sophia Rout reached
Base Camp on the
weekend alongside her
dad. Mum Weni Escano-
Rout is thrilled with their
achievement.
“At only eight years of
age Sophia is the youngest
Australian, and possibly
the youngest in the
world, to complete the
famous Everest Base
Camp trek during Nepal’s
harsh winter,” Weni
told The Weekly Times.
“ While most children
her age will be opening
their presents and
enjoying the festivities
of Christmas, Sophia
has been trekking five
to seven hours a day,
all the while carrying her
own gear.
“During the two week
return journey she will
also battle temperatures
as low as -25°C while
climbing to an altitude of
5545m above sea level.”
Sophia’s feat is is even
more remarkable given
the high number of
climbers who have died
while attempting Everest
during winter and
whose bodies remain
on the world’s highest
mountain, unable to be
retrieved.
“Only a few children
her age have ever attempted
to reach Base
Camp.”
“However, those attempts
were made during
the warmer climbing
months, with Sophia
and her Dad (who has
previously completed
the trek in 2014/5) attempted
the feat during
Nepal’s coldest months
of the year.”
For Sophia, the
achievement goes much
further than a personal
test of courage and endurance.
“During her trip she
plans to visit a local
school and orphanage
in the region, to assist in
some charity work.”
“Sophia, who is also
a competitive swimmer
and runner, has been
training for this trek for
several months and is
also excited to travel
Nepal to see the breathtaking
Himalayas.”
49th anniversary celebrations
for San Antonia da Padova Aged Care centre
SAN Antonio da Padova Village aged care centre in Ryde is celebrating its 49th
anniversary on Sunday January 20.
Back in 1969, a
group of families who
had migrated from the
small Sicilian town of
Poggioreale settled in
Sydney.
They decided to form
an Association with
the aim of presenting
the traditions of their
homeland.
In January 1972, the
Association imported
a statue of St Anthont
from Italy to the protector
of the Poggiorealese
here in Australia.
On April 26, 1972 the
company S Antonio
da Padova Protettore
di Poggioreale Trapani
(Sydney) Ltd was incorporated
in NSW for
the purpose of managing
the affairs and realising
the aims of the
Association.
In 1978 the company
purchased a 25 acre
property at Kemps
Creek west of Sydney
for the express
purpose of developing
an aged care facility
which had become
one of the aims of the
Association.
However it was later
decided to sell this
land and purchase
an existing viable and
profitable 26 bed nursing
home located in
Elizabeth Street Ashfield.
This was accomplished
in April 1987.
The Association successfully
operated that
facility until selling it
to purchase a larger
nursing home in Ryde
in June 1990. This
present facility was
also known as the S
Antonio da Padova
Protettore of Poggioreale
Sydney Nursing
Home Limited and had
accommodation for 40
residents.
Since 1992 the Association
has been able
to purchase additional
properties adjoining
the present home and
built a 50 bed facility.
This enabled them
to commence their
dream of providing
one of the best ranges
of aged care accommodation
in Sydney.
In 2011 the Association
purchased the last
remaining house between
the old and new
facility which allowed
them to commence
the last stage of the
project.
On January 29, 2017
the Association celebrated
the grand
opening of the new facility
accommodating
a further 62 beds.
As part of the Sicilian
tradition, the Association
conducts an Annual
Festival in honour
of St Anthony and the
tradition continues on
June 13 (St Anthony’s
Name Day) each year
when a Mass is celebrated
at the Nursing
Home.
The Association also
conducts a number
of fundraising and social
functions and look
forward to continuing
this work in the years
ahead.
Ryde teenager wins
national honour for
a young endeavour
A RYDE girl has been presented with an Order of Australia Association
Young Endeavour Award for her service with the Royal Australian
Navy as a crew member on the tall ship Young Endeavour.
Ryde’s Elle-Anna Mercer
TWT on-the-spot PHOTO
Nineteen year old Elle-
Anna Mercer recently
sailed the high seas
during the STS Young
Endeavour’s epic adventure
off the Australian
coastline with 21 other
young Australians from
six states and territories.
Her outstanding service
saw her presented
with The Order of Australia
Association (NSW
Branch) Young Endeavour
Award and this personal
citation;
“This award is presented
in recognition of your
commitment to the pursuit
of excellence while
demonstrating the ethos
of the Young Endeavour
Youth Scheme.
“You have achieved
this by always doing your
best regardless of success
or failure.
“You have also displayed
a spirit of friendship
by supporting each
of your fellow youth crew
to achieve their personal
goals throughout the
challenges, hardships
and good times encountered
over the duration of
the voyage.”
The 19 year old Ryde
sailor paid tribute to her
fellow crew members
and thanked the Royal
Australian Navy for the
opportunity of a lifetime.
The tall ship STS Young
Endeavour is a national
icon and is an integral
part of this year’s international
celebrations to
commemorate the 250th
Anniversary of Captain
James Cook’s voyage of
discovery on the original
bark Endeavour.
The 44 metre brigantine
Young Endeavour was
the birthday present from
the people of the Britain
to Australia for our 1988
bicentenary.
She was presented His
Royal Highnesses, the
Prince of Wales at a ceremony
on Australia Day
in 1988.
In the last 30 years over
13,500 young Australians
have benefitted from the
Young Endeavour youth
development program
by the Royal Australian
Navy.
The Young Endeavour
provides around 20
voyages each year to a
youth crew of 24 young
Australians.
During each voyage
crew members – like
Elle-Anna - work with
Navy personnel to learn
the skills to sail a squarerigged
tall ship which
include how to navigate,
how to keep watch, how
to cook in the galley, how
to take the helm and how
to climb the 30 metre
mast to work aloft, setting
and furling sails.
Near the end of the
voyage, the youth crew
elect a command team
who take full responsibility
for Young Endeavour
for 24 hours, sailing the
ship along the Australian
coastline.
“During each voyage,
youth live and work with
a diverse range of people
from across Australia,”
the Royal Australian
Navy said.
“They are encouraged
to pursue personal and
team goals and challenges
in an unfamiliar environment
as they learn to
sail a square-rigged tall
ship.”
This April the Young Endeavour’s
first voyage of
2019 will be from Sydney
to Melbourne.
Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre goes solar
A NEW solar harvesting power
station has been unveiled at the
Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre.
The solar station was unveiled by
General Manager George Dedes, councillors
and staff late last year and is
being promoted as a way to make the
centre more energy efficient.
It is being touted as the largest solar
station in North West Sydney and features
846 solar panels which will generate
more than 300 kilowatts of power.
Combined with a previously installed
cogeneration facility, the solar station
will also save money by reducing a reliance
on the main electricity grid now
down to around 30 per cent.
It is also claimed it will save close to
66 equivalent tonnes of greenhouse
gas emissions each year.
Visitors to the Aquatic Centre will be
able to track the solar station’s performance
through a online tracking system
– near the Aquatic Centre shop
- that provides live data on how much
energy the power station is producing.
In addition to the solar station, the
Aquatic Centre has a new disability
hoist.
Water refill stations are also due to be
installed in the new year.
Mr Dedes said the Surf Ryder will be
open throughout the school holidays
and there will several soccer and sporting
clinics for children in the Aquatic
Centre grounds.
ew app helps people cope with the stress
f a stressful new year
SYDNEY’s North Health Network has launched a new app to help people suffering
from stress and anxiety.
Called the Clevetar app
and Created by South
Australia’s Flinders University
Human Behaviour
and Health Research Unit
it provides access to different
virtual, mental health
coaches.
These coaches offer
education, personal goal
setting and motivation as
well as providing on-going
support to achieve these
goals.
“Clevertar is for people
experiencing mild to moderate
anxiety and depression,”
the team at Sydney’s
North Health Network said.
“ As it is a digital application
you can simply
download it to your mobile
device-phone or tablet
for delivering clinically
effective therapy, helping
reduce feelings of stress,
anxiety, or low mood.
“The aim is to provide
you with choice, flexibility,
cost-effectiveness and improved
access to mental
health services, so Clevertar
is more than an app
because it is like having a
personal coach in your bag
or pocket 24-hours a day.”
It has been launched
during the Christmas and
New Year holiday period
because this period is often
associated with higher
levels of stress and anxiety.
“The Christmas and New
Year can be busy times of
the year for many of us,”
the team said.
“ There is the expectation
this is a happy and celebratory
time but for some
of us though it can be oth-
erwise.
“Financial pressures may
arise around gift giving or
personal pressures around
family dynamics, affecting
stress and anxiety levels,
clouding our personal perspectives
and enjoyment
of this time.”
The team recognises that
seeking professional help,
such as a psychologist
or psychiatrist, over the
Christmas and New Year
period can also be challenging.
“With people away and
regular routines put aside,
it may not be so easy to
NOW IN SIX LANGUAGES!
www.weeklytimes.com.au
Parents can use
one voucher for every
school-age child per
year to help meet the
cost of structured creative
and cultural activities,
such as music
lessons, languages,
coding, drama and
theatre, photography
and graphic design.
The vouchers are
part of the NSW Government’s
Creative
Kids Program which
builds on the success
of the Active Kids
Program that assists
parents cover sports
costs.
Ryde MP Victor
Dominello said the
new vouchers recognise
the fact that many
children spend their
leisure time creatively.
“The start of the
school year is just
around the corner and
we are encouraging
parents to get in early
by jumping on the Service
NSW website to
register for their Creative
Kids vouchers,” Mr
Dominello said.
“Involvement in creative
and cultural learning
activities is critical
to a child’s growth
and development but
the enrolment costs
all add to the family
budget and can be
prohibitive.
“The NSW Government
recognises that
cost of living is a major
issue for families
and because of our
strong budget position,
we are proud to
be providing this extra
assistance for children
to participate in these
valuable creative and
cultural programs.
“This program compliments
the hugely
popular Active Kids
voucher and for a family
with two children,
Creative and Active
Kids combined will
save you $400 a year.”
There are still thousands
of providers out
there which could be
eligible to be part of
the Creative Kids program
throughout 2019.
The Government is
calling on them to register
with Service NSW
so that parents can
claim their vouchers
with them.
Creative Kids is one
of a raft of NSW Government
initiatives
helping to ease cost
of living pressure for
households.
Others include
cheaper Green Slips
and refunds, free car
registration for regular
toll users and the Fuel-
Check app. Further
register as a provider
Tigers’ touch footy young guns
clinch maiden Vawdon Cup
MEET the promising batch of junior Balmain touch footballers that recently
created history by capturing their first-ever Sydney metropolitan
Vawdon Cup Youth championship.
The young Tigers produced
a mighty defensive
effort in the Cup
Grand Final to edge
out a determined Easts
Roosters side and
claim the trophy after a
dramatic drop off.
It was a fine achievement
by the Balmain
cubs who demonstrated
their class and skill
throughout the competition,
showing a maturity
that far belied their years.
Under the coaching of
experienced mentor Andrew
Phillips, the cubs
proved a force to be
reckoned with during the
2018 finals series.
In a fast paced title
decider, the Tigers and
Roosters were locked 2
tries all at full time before
the drop off came down
to a three on three challenge.
Both teams had a try
disallowed before Dion
Teaupa and the dynamic
Samuel Zammit moved
the ball between them,
passing off to the elusive
Zane Camroux who
pinned his ears back to
score in the corner.
Zammit was a deserved
Player of the Match with
his passing and defensive
skills a feature.
