Tech Clinic 

City of Ryde Council 

have generously provided 

a grant to assist 

the Eastwood Senior 

Citizens Club in a new 

venture which aims to 

provide tech assistance 

to seniors whilst seniors 

who have an innate interest 

in technology can 

spend time enjoying the 

environment. 

The venture is a new 

group within the club 

devoted to addressing 

a whole range of issues 

from problem solving to 

information sharing via 

the collective knowledge 

of club members. 

Membership of the 

group is open to all seniors. 

Q&A sessions will feature 

at most meetings 

and speakers will be 

sourced on a regular basis.

Diamond Anniversary 

for Fermina and Adamo 

LONG time Ryde residents Fermina and Adamo 

Fioravanti recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding 

Anniversary with family and friends. 

The popular couple are pictured after their marriage in 

December 1958 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church 

in Randwick. They currently reside in Frederick Street 

Ryde where they’ve lived for the past 55 years. 

Adamo emigrated to Australia in 1956 at the age of 25. 

He was originally from a town in Italy called Castignano 

which is a medieval village on the Adriatic coast in the 

Marche region. 

Fermina moved down under in 1955 at the age of 19 

from an island off the coast of Naples called Ischia. 

Adamo made a living as a carpenter / builder and did 

lots of work in the local community during his career 

including working on the construction of the carpark 

and bowling greens at Ryde RSL Club. 

Fermina has always been a home maker and enjoys 

playing bingo and attending the raffles at the Gladesville 

RSL, Club Ryde X and Ryde Eastwood Leagues Clubs. 

The couple have three children Marco, Violante and 

Ricardo, six grandchildren and a great grand child.

NDT editor announces shrinking paper! 

Simone Roberts as Editor of Northern District Times and three other Murdoch 

owned Cumberland Newspapers weekly titles bravely wrote from her Parramatta 

bunker that the NDT from today will be printed in a new compact (smaller) 

format. 

“This is to ensure the long-term sustainability of our community newspapers”, 

she said. “As part of these changes for 2019 our focus is to get closer to our community” 

- from Parramatta HQ? 

Simone says in a syndicated message to all 14 Cumberland titles “as editor of

With the maddening 

rush by state government 

/ councils / developers 

in Sydney, certifiers 

must be dizzy as

Who will fix these places 

up in a year or so from

good politicians

The need of discovering 

and praising the beauty 

and integrity is urgent. 

I am not a party member,

the beautiful side of politicians.

Dear Sir, 

Head racist of the letters 

page, Tony Ikonomou, 

has ended the 

year with his final rant 

which started out being 

about over population 

and over development 

but inevitably ended 

with his a plea for us to 

only accept immigrants 

from North America 

and Europe. 

A few points come out 

of his predictable blatherings. 

Much of the blame for 

inappropriate development, 

and in some cases 

over development, can 

be sheeted home to incompetent 

local and 

state governments along 

with really poor building 

and design standards. 

Those public authorities 

should also take responsibility 

for not keeping 

pace with the appropriate

transport, parks, open 

space etc. 

They are addicted to 

the developers fees and 

blind to the community 

needs. 

However we need our

Without growth we will 

not have the tax revenue 

to cover the costs of an 

ageing society. 

Immigrants deliver for 

all of us and our community 

a better place financially 

and socially as a result. 

Diversity helps us all 

especially when we live 

on an island continent. 

Our country is a 

wealthy one and we have 

a global responsibility to 

help those less fortunate 

than ourselves. 

It is a fact that the majority 

of those people are 

going to come from Asia, 

Africa, the Middle East 

and the Pacific. 

These are the places 

where there are war 

zones, oppressive regimes, 

famines, climate 

refugees and a range of 

troubled populations. 

The words chiselled 

into the foundation of 

the Statue of Liberty are 

worth remembering at 

this time of year: 

“Give me your tired 

your poor, your huddled 

masses yearning to 

breathe free”. 

It pays to remember no 

man is an island.

Hunter’s Hill 

Opposiing view to 

Hunters Hill Day 

Dear Sir, 

In his attempt to justify 

the self-congratulation 

and vanity of 

“Hunter’s Hill Day”, 

former councillor Peter 

Astridge regales us 

with a long-winded list 

of incidents where the 

community and council 

came together for the 

public good. 

What he fails to acknowledge 

are the times 

when Hunter’s Hill Council 

acted in defiance of 

the clear community 

view. 

The most notable recent 

example of this arrogance 

was the development 

of the Hunter’s 

Hill Hotel site. In the face 

of unanimous opposing 

motions passed at large 

public meetings and 

scores of lodged objections, 

the Council bent 

its own rules to approve 

this blatant over-development. 

The precedent was 

then set and we now 

have three other large 

developments that have 

destroyed the previously 

quiet, community atmosphere 

of the village precinct. 

Mr Astridge was a 

member of Council when 

it approved those developments. 

It is all very well for him 

to now boast about “all 

the victories we have 

won over the years”. 

Many of us are more 

likely to remember the 

times when our Council 

acted against the interests 

of its electors.

his apprentice Jordan Lane 

who delivered an emotional 

(and bordering on apoplexy 

at times), very nasty 

and personal diatribes directed 

principally at Mayor 

Jerome Laxale. 

Of course they have every 

right to push their case, 

but the arrogant born to 

rule tone grates a little! The 

speakers claim the Mayor 

has already given approval 

for the Meriton project and 

that the minority liberal 

councillors represent overwhelming 

opposition from 

the residents. 

Hopefully the public gallery 

conga line of Liberal 

sycophants hanging off 

their every word are not 

representative of the majority 

of sensible residents. 

In view of the venom exhibited 

by both speakers, 

the right thing for them to 

do was oppose the Mayor’s 

recommendation. 

Of course this whole liberal 

circus is nothing to do 

with common sense, and 

was all engineered by local 

MP Victor Dominello, who 

has been pedalling his own 

series of porkies on this 

matter, as he is in real danger 

of losing the Ryde seat. 

Notwithstanding, Mr 

Dominello who is celebrating 

ten years in parliament, 

seems under the illusion he 

has been all anti-development 

for that duration. 

To borrow one of the 

many great lines of Paul 

Keating - “if you believe 

that, then you must believe 

in fairies at the bottom of 

the garden”. 

Underpinning all the frivolity, 

two facts persist, 

that should give the punters 

a pretty good clue as 

how the State is thinking 

about the development issue: 

* The Meriton site in 

question has been rezoned 

residential. 

* The State Government 

has established two 

planned precincts for increased 

development in 

Ryde, thus expect more to 

follow! 

Mr Dominello is puffed 

up like a frill necked lizard 

having gained from his 

close factional buddy Gladys 

Berejiklian, an “assurance 

review” by the Greater 

Sydney Commission, 

with the respected Lucy 

Turnbull as Chief Commissioner.

Because of the closures

the NSW Auditor General 

who criticised the NSW 

government for the $531 

million bungled TAFE computer 

system (EBS) and

Approximately in 1973 

when I was a very young 

girl, I joined together with 

a group of Boy Scouts in 

the city where I lived. 

We wore an elegant uniform: 

a shirt with the insignia 

of the fleur-de-lis and 

a magnificent “scarf” that 

made us feel very elegant. 

A Sunday afternoon 

when we returned from an 

excursion, we were surprised 

by a group of Falangists 

that approached 

us, surrounded us and 

began to insult us, calling 

us separatists, renegades 

and things with strong language. 

They tore off from me the 

badge I had on my shirt 

and kicked it. People began 

to come to see what 

was happening and at the 

end they go away, leaving 

us quite injured and frightened. 

Last week a similar situation 

happened with the 

participants in the World 

Youth Days in Madrid, but 

on this occasion, instead 

of being the Falangists, the 

attack was executed by 

the Laicists that act in the 

same way as the singleparty 

State acted 38 years 

ago, also moved by the 

hate of freedom. 

The big difference is that 

at least up until now, we 

have lived in a democracy 

where everyone can feel 

free. 

However, negative signs 

promoted by an extremely 

low fundamentalist minority 

are starting to appear. 

They try to suppress by 

force manifestations of 

other people who do not 

think like them. 

Wouldn’t it be that the 

current Left in Spain is 

considering to re-establish 

another dictatorship? A 

dictatorship that was hard 

to overcome.

Incredible eight year old conquers Mount Everest 

AN eight year old Concord girl has achieved the astonishing feat of being 

one of an elite group of young athletes to reach Base Camp on Mount 

Everest in winter. 

Sophia Rout reached 

Base Camp on the 

weekend alongside her 

dad. Mum Weni Escano- 

Rout is thrilled with their 

achievement. 

“At only eight years of 

age Sophia is the youngest 

Australian, and possibly 

the youngest in the 

world, to complete the 

famous Everest Base 

Camp trek during Nepal’s 

harsh winter,” Weni 

told The Weekly Times. 

“ While most children 

her age will be opening 

their presents and 

enjoying the festivities 

of Christmas, Sophia 

has been trekking five 

to seven hours a day, 

all the while carrying her 

own gear. 

“During the two week 

return journey she will 

also battle temperatures 

as low as -25°C while 

climbing to an altitude of 

5545m above sea level.” 

Sophia’s feat is is even 

more remarkable given 

the high number of 

climbers who have died 

while attempting Everest 

during winter and 

whose bodies remain 

on the world’s highest 

mountain, unable to be 

retrieved. 

“Only a few children 

her age have ever attempted 

to reach Base 

Camp.” 

“However, those attempts 

were made during 

the warmer climbing 

months, with Sophia 

and her Dad (who has 

previously completed 

the trek in 2014/5) attempted

for San Antonia da Padova Aged Care centre 

SAN Antonio da Padova Village aged care centre in Ryde is celebrating its 49th 

anniversary on Sunday January 20. 

Back in 1969, a 

group of families who 

had migrated from the 

small Sicilian town of 

Poggioreale settled in 

Sydney. 

They decided to form 

an Association with 

the aim of presenting 

the traditions of their 

homeland. 

In January 1972, the 

Association imported 

a statue of St Anthont 

from Italy to the protector 

of the Poggiorealese 

here in Australia. 

On April 26, 1972 the 

company S Antonio 

da Padova Protettore 

di Poggioreale Trapani 

(Sydney) Ltd was incorporated 

in NSW for 

the purpose of managing 

the affairs and realising 

the aims of the 

Association. 

In 1978 the company 

purchased a 25 acre 

property at Kemps 

Creek west of Sydney 

for the express 

purpose of developing 

an aged care facility 

which had become 

one of the aims of the 

Association. 

However it was later 

decided to sell this 

land and purchase 

an existing viable and 

profitable 26 bed nursing 

home located in 

Elizabeth Street Ashfield. 

This was accomplished 

in April 1987. 

The Association successfully 

operated that 

facility until selling it 

to purchase a larger 

nursing home in Ryde 

in June 1990. This 

present facility was 

also known as the S 

Antonio da Padova 

Protettore of Poggioreale 

Sydney Nursing 

Home Limited and had 

accommodation for 40 

residents. 

Since 1992 the Association 

has been able 

to purchase additional 

properties adjoining 

the present home and 

built a 50 bed facility. 

This enabled them 

to commence their 

dream of providing 

one of the best ranges 

of aged care accommodation 

in Sydney. 

In 2011 the Association 

purchased the last 

remaining house between 

the old and new 

facility which allowed 

them to commence 

the last stage of the 

project. 

On January 29, 2017 

the Association celebrated 

the grand 

opening of the new facility 

accommodating 

a further 62 beds. 

As part of the Sicilian 

tradition, the Association 

conducts an Annual 

Festival in honour 

of St Anthony and the 

tradition continues on 

June 13 (St Anthony’s 

Name Day) each year 

when a Mass is celebrated 

at the Nursing 

Home. 

The Association also 

conducts a number 

of fundraising and social 

functions and look 

forward to continuing 

this work in the years 

ahead.

The City of Parramatta is expecting more 

than 80,000 people at its all-day Australia 

Day celebration in Parramatta Park on 

Saturday January 26. 

The free 15-hour-long celebration will kick off 

from 6am with the traditional and iconic hot air 

balloon display, pictured. 

The celebration also features the nation’s 

largest Australia Day citizenship ceremony, a 

classic cars display (pictured) a lamb barbecue 

competition, free activities and workshops, a 

great line-up of Aussie artists, and family-friendly 

fireworks at 9pm. 

“The festivities celebrate everything there is to 

love about Parramatta including its rich history, 

cultural diversity and local talent,” Lord Mayor 

Andrew Wilson said. 

“Set in the beautiful grounds of World Heritage- 

Listed Parramatta Park, it is the ultimate outdoor 

destination for Australia Day celebrations offering 

something for everyone,” 

Aussie rock legends The Chantoozies, Dale 

Ryder, Eurogliders, Swanee, Matt Finish, 

Real Life, Ross Wilson, Sean Kelly, Sharon 

O’Neil, Steve Kilbey and Grant Walmsley will 

headline the evening concert at The Crescent 

Amphitheatre from 6pm, culminating in a medley 

before a 12-minute-long fireworks extravaganza 

ends the all-day celebrations at 9pm. 

“This year’s celebrations will be particularly 

special as we welcome almost 1,500 new 

Australian citizens as part of Australia Day’s 

largest citizenship ceremony,” Lord Mayor Wilson 

said. 

A unique welcome ceremony will see more than 

500 Aboriginal children and dancers perform 

around a corroborree sand circle from 7.45am, 

followed by the official Citizenship Ceremony, 

which will be hosted by distinguished journalist, 

public speaker and actor, Kumud Merani at 

9.30am. 

“Internationally-renowned and iconic Aboriginal 

band Yothu Yindi and The Treaty Project, 

featuring original Yothu Yindi members and 

emerging First Nations artists, will perform new 

remixes of classic Yothu Yindi hits to conclude 

the citizenship program,” Lord Mayor Wilson 

said. 

The Family Stage will be the go-to place for 

live entertainment the whole family can enjoy. 

Rapper D Minor will perform onstage and then 

join rock icon Ross Wilson to judge 20 Western 

Sydney talented and emerging artists as part of 

the annual Parravision grand final from 11am. 

The overall winner will get a rare opportunity 

to perform later in the evening at the NSW 

Government’s flagship ‘Australia Day Live’ event 

in Circular Quay. 

A great line-up of Western Sydney musicians 

such as Ricky Nifo, Kymie, Mel Bailey, Jannah 

Beth and Nardean, will take to the stage from 

1pm. 

“Australia Day is not complete without a good 

barbecue and lots of food, and our event doesn’t 

disappoint with a great selection of food stalls 

and our annual Big BBQ competition,” Lord 

Mayor Wilson said. 

Some of Australia’s best barbeque teams will 

dish out the ultimate lamb cutlets, ribs, shanks 

and shoulders for the Big BBQ competition. 

The pitmasters will demonstrate their skills and 

event-goers will be able to sample the barbecued 

meats. 

Carnivale, Sydney’s premier display of classic 

and vintage vehicles, will feature highlights 

including: a 111-year-old REO tourer built in 1907 

and owned by Don Liddle OAM; more than 20 

Armstrong Siddeley cars which are celebrating 

100 years since the first car was produced in April 

1919, and the 60-year-old Australian designed 

and built Goggomobil Dart. Additionally, Dart 

designer and builder Bill Buckle will be at 

Carnivale with one of his legendary 1959 Buckle 

Coupes. 

The Playground area will offer a smorgasbord 

of fun tailored specifically for young children 

featuring magic, dance and dreamtime shows 

as well as interactive activities with a circus tent, 

African drumming, arts and crafts stations, a 

variety of dance workshops, face painting and 

roving performers.

Young Endeavour Award for her service with the Royal Australian 

Navy as a crew member on the tall ship Young Endeavour.

the birthday present from

She was presented His 

Royal Highnesses, the 

Prince of Wales at a ceremony

13,500 young Australians

by the Royal Australian 

Navy. 

The Young Endeavour

and furling sails. 

Near the end of the 

voyage, the youth crew 

elect a command team 

who take full responsibility

for 24 hours, sailing the 

ship along the Australian 

coastline.

youth live and work with 

a diverse range of people 

from across Australia,” 

the Royal Australian 

Navy said. 

“They are encouraged

Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre goes solar 

A NEW solar harvesting power 

station has been unveiled at the 

Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre. 

The solar station was unveiled by 

General Manager George Dedes, councillors 

and staff late last year and is 

being promoted as a way to make the 

centre more energy efficient. 

It is being touted as the largest solar 

station in North West Sydney and features 

846 solar panels which will generate 

more than 300 kilowatts of power. 

Combined with a previously installed 

cogeneration facility, the solar station 

will also save money by reducing a reliance 

on the main electricity grid now 

down to around 30 per cent. 

It is also claimed it will save close to 

66 equivalent tonnes of greenhouse 

gas emissions each year. 

Visitors to the Aquatic Centre will be 

able to track the solar station’s performance 

through a online tracking system 

– near the Aquatic Centre shop 

- that provides live data on how much 

energy the power station is producing. 

In addition to the solar station, the 

Aquatic Centre has a new disability 

hoist. 

Water refill stations are also due to be 

installed in the new year. 

Mr Dedes said the Surf Ryder will be 

open throughout the school holidays 

and there will several soccer and sporting 

clinics for children in the Aquatic 

Centre grounds.
