Lockport City Council
Two local unions come to bargaining agreement with City administrators
Rochelle McAuliffe
Freelance Reporter
During November and
December 2018, City administrators
met with the
bargaining teams of the Metropolitan
Alliance of Police
Chapter #75 and the International
Union of Operating
Engineers, Local 175 to
negotiate an extension to the
current collective bargaining
agreement.
On Jan. 2, The Committee
of the Whole heard the
collective bargaining agreements
for Lockport police
officers, represented by
MAP Chapter #75 and City
employees, represented by
the International Union of
Operating Engineers, Local
150, which are set to expire
June 30.
Both labor associations
have reached tentative
agreements with City
administration for another
four-year contract, with both
tentative agreements calling
for a three-percent wage increase
annually.
City administration approached
the bargaining
with the goal of implementing
a wage increase that
reflected current economic
conditions while still preparing
for unforeseen instability.
The wage increase is to
come with no additional increase
in budgetary costs
to the City, and the agreement
is to have predictable
employee costs for the next
four years which help with
economic forecasting and
budgeting.
The agreements were
reached in a spirit of labormanagement
cooperation
and are meant to help promote
a continuing cooperation
between the City and its
bargaining units.
“We did this in the spirit
that times are well right
now,” Mayor Steve Streit
said. “We have the opportunity
to re-bargain anything if
times change.”
Alderman Jim Petrakos
said he was happy about the
agreement, stating that “it’s
nice to have an open dialogue
with our unions.”
“It was nice to know that
the discussion was happening,
and ... that if we have
another recession or anything
else, the discussion
is already there,” Petrakos
said.
Final consideration and
approval of the resolution is
to occur during the Jan. 16
city council meeting. If approved
by the council, the
agreements must then be ratified
by both unions before
going into effect July 1.
Marcus Theatre development
amendment
The Lockport Committee
of the Whole heard the
minor amendment to the
planned unit development,
as well as the amendment
to the preliminary and final
development plans to the
future Marcus Theatre in
Lockport Square.
The amendment to the
PUD allows for an increase
in building height and the
use of linear lighting as part
of the architecture to create
the movie theater theme.
The amendment is considered
a “minor amendment”
because the proposed use
is still intended to be commercial.
As a “minor amendment,”
a public hearing was
not required.
During its regular meeting
Dec. 11, the Planning
and Zoning Commission
considered the request. The
Commission recommended
the approval of a building
height greater than 35 feet
as shown on the elevation
plans, as well as the use of
linear lighting as part of the
architecture to create the
movie theater theme.
The project is to occur in
two phases, with construction
anticipated to begin in
2019. Phase 1 is to include
a 48,404-square-foot building
containing 10 auditoriums
for approximately
1,220 seats; a 1,900-squarefoot
lounge with bar and
table seating; full concession
stands with kitchen and selfserve
drinks; self-serve tickets
and a box office.
Phase 2 would include a
14,200-square-foot addition
containing four additional
auditoriums for approximately
432 seats. Because
the building addition in
Phase 2 would be contingent
on the success of Phase 1,
some City Council members
questioned the usability of
land under the current design
should the second phase not
be built.
Under the current proposed
design, the Phase 2
addition would be built on
the east side of the building,
facing Interstate 355. Until
Phase 2 begins, the design
calls for grass to be planted
as a temporary landscape for
the plot.
“One of our biggest frontages
in Lockport is 355, so
seeing that not filled in or
just grass isn’t our best foot
forward,” Petrakos said.
Petrakos then asked if
there was any reason why
they wouldn’t start development
on the east side of the
lot and have the addition toward
the center of the property,
rather than the other
way around.
Paul Phillips of JSD Professional
Services, who is
representing Marcus Theatres,
said they would reassess
the design to move the
addition to the center.
The item was placed on
the agenda for final consideration
at the Jan. 16 meeting.
GG Temple annexation
agreement amended
In August 2017, the City
Council held a hearing that
approved the amended and
restated annexation of Ganesha
Gayathri Temple, located
at 16059 and 16105
W. 151st St., to replace a
previous existing annexation
agreement from 2012.
The amended annexation
agreement set forth a schedule
of the final development
plans for GG Temple in three
phases, with Phase I to have
been completed by June 30,
2018.
At the end of 2018, Phase
I has not been completed,
and it became evident that
the administration would
need to revise the develop-
Preschool
ment schedule to ensure
compliance.
The priority in the completion
deadlines are to be
for development items that
are related to maintaining
the occupancy and City
Code requirements. Development
items that are related
to the beautification of
the property will be pushed
to the later stages of phase
deadlines.
Administration recommended
that the restated
and amended annexation
agreement be amended
again, with the date of completion
for Phase I changing
from June 30, 2018, to June
30, 2021; Phase II changing
from June 30, 2019, to
June 30, 2023; and Phase
III changing from June 20,
2024, to June 30, 2026. This
amendment is to come with
added provision that the
owner must present an annual
report with the status
of the development; and
that failure to meet the revised
development goals
will be subject to revocation
of the certificate of occupancy
until compliance
with the conditions of the
annexation are met.
A public hearing is to be
held Jan. 16 for the final
consideration of the amendment
to the amended and
restated annexation agreement.
ASK
YOUR
LAWYER
by T. Andrew Coyle
Attorney at Law
Are you married? Do you have
kids? Do you have a Will? If you
answered ‘yes’ to the first two
questions but ‘no’ to the last one:
Then, if you were to pass away,
one half of your assets would
pass to your spouse and one half
would pass to your children. That
probably isn’t what you would
choose and can lead to all sorts
of issues and complications down
the road. If your children are
minors, then it would likely require
a formal guardianship before
they would be able to access
any property. If your spouse
requires nursing home care, then
the assets may all be tied up
by Medicaid liens. If you have a
second spouse but children from
a previous relationship, then the
different parts of your family may
find themselves having costly
court battles to figure out who
is entitled to what. In that case,
they probably all would agree
that they wish you had prepared a
Will when you were able to. If you
would like to discuss setting up
a Will, please contact The Coyle
Law Office at 815-838-6199.
McGrath ‘illegitimately absent’
from Augustinian Province
State’s Attorney says
abuse case open but
without ‘sufficient
evidence’
Bill Jones
Managing Editor
First, the
Rev. Richard
J. McGrath’s
cellphone vanished
amid an McGrath
investigation
into allegations of inappropriate
content on the device.
Now, McGrath himself has
gone rogue from an Augustinian
Province after being
asked to leave a friary near
a grade school in Hyde Park,
in light of abuse allegations
made against him.
But the Will County
State’s Attorney is saying
it does not have enough
evidence to file any charges
against the priest.
The Rev. Richie P. Mercado,
of the Augustinian
Midwest Province of Our
Mother of Good Counsel —
which oversees Providence
Catholic High School, where
McGrath formerly served as
president — issued a statement
in December saying
that after the Archdiocese of
Chicago requested McGrath
no longer reside at St. John
Stone Friary in Hyde Park,
“without permission from
the Augustinians, McGrath
did not move to another Augustinian
residence.”
“Since then, he has been,
as is known under Canon
Law, ‘illegitimately’ absent
from the Augustinian
Province,” according to the
statement. “Therefore, he
is no longer an agent of the
Augustinian Order. At this
time, he remains a priest, but
without the canonical faculties
to function as one.”
The Augustinians said
McGrath was removed from
all public ministry after the
Province became aware of
an allegation of potentially
inappropriate material on
his mobile device, though
Providence Catholic in December
2017 announced it
as a retirement amid the allegations.
New Lenox police conducted
an investigation into
alleged images of a naked,
male juvenile seen on his
phone. But that investigation
was closed mid-February
2018 because of a lack of
evidence.
McGrath reportedly refused
multiple times to surrender
the phone to Providence
officials and police.
McGrath’s lawyer at the
time, Patrick Reardon, told
police in December 2017
the phone “no longer exists”
and it would be a “huge
waste of time” to look for
it, according to the police
reports. Without the phone,
police said they could not
file charges.
In April 2018, McGrath
was accused by Bob Krankvich,
36, of repeatedly sexually
abusing him in the mid-
1990s, when Krankvich was
approximately 13-15 years
old. McGrath was assigned
in 2018 to live at St. John
Stone Friary, where the Augustinians
say they worked
to “ensure that he had no
unsupervised access to minors.”
But the friary is 390
feet from the St. Thomas the
Apostle grade school, and
also is near a preschool and
a day care center. The archdiocese
last fall requested
McGrath be moved, and the
Augustinians were tasked
with his relocation.
It was during preparations
for the move the Augustinians
say McGrath moved
to a non-Augustinian residence.
The Augustinians say
they notified the archdiocese
of his absence and have cooperated
with civil authorities
regarding the abuse allegations
against McGrath.
Paula Waters, chief communications
officer for the
archdiocese, said members
of that organization do not
know his current whereabouts.
“We were told he had
been moved from the archdiocese,”
Waters wrote Dec.
28 in an email to The Legend
when asked what happened
after the archdiocese asked
that McGrath be moved.
Anne Maselli, director of
communications and marketing
for the archdiocese,
directed further questions
to the Augustinian Order.
Maselli previously said the
archdiocese was unaware
of the seriousness of the allegations
against McGrath
when he was living at the
friary because they were not
notified by the Augustinians,
despite a press conference
in which Krankvich detailed
the alleged abuse being covered
by multiple Chicagoarea
news outlets.
McGrath had completed
safe environment training
in response to the allegation
of inappropriate material
on his phone, and therefore
the archdiocese “did not see
the need to notify nearby
schools.” Maselli previously
noted.
Krankvich said he filed
an official report against
McGrath with New Lenox
police in January 2018, not
long after seeing a news report
about McGrath resigning
from Providence amid
the criminal investigation
into the alleged content on
the mobile device.
New ownership at Naked
Sprout to focus on education
Max Lapthorne, Editor
Charles DeLess recently
made a move that most people
only dream about: becoming
owner of one of his
favorite stores.
The Orland Park resident
and his wife had frequented
Naked Sprout Organics
Market on State Street for
three years, and when he
heard the owner was looking
to sell, DeLess immediately
made his interest known. He
partnered with Rikki Neyer,
who had worked there previously,
and set out to explore
a new vision for the store,
which re-opened under the
new ownership Sunday, Jan.
6.
“I figured we could put
a good team together and
come in here and try to scale
it down,” DeLess said.
The store, located at 938
S. State St., previously
served as an organic grocery
store and sold various knickknacks,
but staying true to
his name, DeLess wants to
do less.
“I don’t want to be that
store,” he said. “I’m trying
to be between a Jamba
Juice and a Starbucks, but
healthy.”
With a large, forest-inspired
mural covering one
wall and furniture that appears
better suited for a cozy
living room than a store
— including a large rectangular
table as a centerpiece
— the new iteration of Naked
Sprout Organics is to be
focused on education and
camaraderie.
“We want the people to be
able to come and sit,” De-
Less said. “... I want to make
it a place to be.”
The plan is for the plantbased,
organic juices,
smoothies and detoxes to
draw customers in, and for
the educational offerings
and comfortable atmosphere
to keep them coming back.
Nutritional education is especially
important to DeLess
and Neyer, who have included
a “Nutritional Nook” in
the store, which is to contain
various books pertaining to
healthy living for visitors to
peruse. But those looking for
a more formal introduction
to the world of plant-based,
organic nutrition can also attend
classes that are to be offered
there.
With the help of a wall
comprised almost entirely
of chalkboard, various nutrition
and health experts are to
teach classes of about 10-12
people about the benefits of
a plant-based diet, which is
something DeLess is passionate
about.
“I imagine we’re going
to have lots of classes,” he
said. “Health classes and
nutritional classes are really
going to be a focal point for
us.”
DeLess said he hopes the
classes offered at Naked
Sprout will gain traction
with some of the younger
customers, because children
are the people on which he
sees the lessons having the
most lasting impact.
“I really want to reach
children, because I think it
sets the tone for the rest of
their lives,” he said.
The education process at
Naked Sprout also extends
to the water that is to be
served in all of the store’s
juices, smoothies and other
products, as well as sold on
its own. The water is to be
hydrogenized alkaline water,
which has a higher pH level
and provides more hydration
than normal water, according
to DeLess.
The grand opening of
Naked Sprout Organics
under its new ownership
was held Sunday, Jan. 6.
Max Lapthorne/22nd Century
Media
Josh Neyer, who is spearheading
Naked Sprout’s efforts
to provide hydrogenized
alkaline water to its
customers, sees as much
benefit in teaching visitors
about the water as he does in
serving it to them.
“It’s not just going to be,
‘Come here and buy the water;’
we’re really going to
try to actually help promote
daily use of this,” Josh Neyer
said. “… We’re looking to
create better, cleaner water
for our products, but also on
the same token, serve it to
the public.”
Naked Sprout is to be
open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. seven
days a week, and will be
looking to extend its hours
to 7 a.m.-7 p.m. sometime in
the spring, according to De-
Less.
“We want to bring health
and comfort to this area,”
“... We’re just trying to get
people healthy.”
Will O’Brien
Freelance Reporter
For the millions of Americans
who make — and
break — New Year’s resolutions
to get healthier, it
often comes down to a lack
of support.
That will not be an issue
at 22nd Century Media’s
Healthy Living Expo,
where nearly 1,000 attendees
are expected to take in
a full day of fitness with 67
vendors, seven workout sessions
and eight inspirational
speakers.
The free event, now in its
third year and set for 9 a.m.-
1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at
the Tinley Park Convention
Center, was created with
resolution-makers in mind,
said Heather Warthen, the
publishing company’s chief
events officer.
“The expo really ties in
nicely with New Year’s
and people wanting to shift
away from all the indulgences
of the holiday season,”
Warthen said. “It’s a
great way to hit reset.”
With more vendors than
in years past, the expo will
give attendees the opportunity
to interact with businesses
and organizations
representing the full spectrum
of the healthy-living
world. Gyms, dietitians,
physical therapists, spas,
health care providers, and
professionals in finance,
fashion, home remodeling,
and travel will all be represented.
Groups conducting
health screenings also will
be on-hand.
receive free tote bags, while
the first 500 are to get prod-
Bob Sterba in April confirmed
Krankvich’s January
report and said his department
concluded a thorough
investigation four weeks prior
and turned the case over
to the State’s Attorney’s Office.
Sterba called Krankvich
“credible” at the time.
Sterba said his department’s
investigation into
McGrath, related to the allegations
made by Krankvich,
is “done,” pending further
requests from the Will County
State’s Attorney’s Office.
“There has been no change
on our end,” Sterba wrote in
a December email to The
Legend of McGrath’s recent
move. “His whereabouts [do
not] change anything.”
Carole Cheney, spokesperson
for the Will County
State’s Attorney’s Office,
told The Legend Dec. 30 the
case is “still being reviewed,”
but later clarified that while
the case is still considered
“open” the State’s Attorney’s
Office “[doesn’t] have sufficient
evidence at this time to
bring about charges.”
Jeff Anderson, one of the
attorneys who filed the civil
lawsuit on behalf of Krankvich,
called McGrath a “longstanding
danger” by phone
in late December. He added
that the Augustinians’ secrecy
is part of the problem,
and called it “alarming” that
McGrath is “on the loose.”
Reardon said Jan. 2 he is
not currently representing
McGrath. He added that he
saw no reason for McGrath
to have legal representation
at the time because there is
no active litigation involving
him.
A motion was filed by the
defendant to dismiss with
prejudice Krankvich’s lawsuit
in November, and there
was a December move to
strike or withdraw it, but
the case was continued for
a case management conference
later that month, according
to Cook County Circuit
Court records.
McGrath started working
for Providence Catholic in
1986. Before that, he was
employed at St. Rita High
School and Monastery in
Chicago.

Year in Review 2018
Main Street Lockport has ‘year of change and impact’ in 2018
Kathy Gentile
Main Street President
Main Street Lockport’s
mission is to improve the
viability and appearance of
the downtown district, and
stimulate long-term investment
through business recruitment
and retention, all
within the context of Lockport’s
rich history.
In 2018, Main Street
Lockport both hosted and
participated in some great
community events, including:
• 1836 Annual Fundraiser
— the one time a year when
Main Street Lockport raises
money that funds the events
throughout the year. A fun
event, with silent auctions,
raffles, great food and wine
and live music.
• Clean Sweep — beautification,
installation of plantings
throughout Lockport’s
historic district and along the
I&M Canal.
• Bike and Dine — a popular
annual event, the Bike
and Dine introduces bike
riders to the local bike paths
Lockport, and offers the opportunity
to sample tasty
fare at local restaurants.
• Old Canal Days Wine
Tent — each June, as part of
Old Canal Days, Main Street
hosts the wine tent.
• Lobsterfest — This
year marked the third annual
Lobsterfest, an evening
of delicious food, wine
and music, enjoyed within
the inspired art of the Illinois
State Museum. This
is quickly becoming one of
Main Street Lockport’s most
popular events.
• Lights — Main Street
Lockport coordinated with
the City of Lockport and
Chamber of Commerce to
design and install the lights
along Lincoln Landing by
the Gaylord building.
• Planter boxes throughout
the city — as the result
of a generous donation
by the Lockport Woman’s
Club, Main Street Lockport
was able to design and install
planter boxes along the
bridge, beautifying the entrance
to the city.
This past year, Main
Street Lockport elected
new officers: Kathy Gentile,
President, and Nancy
Cole Ramirez, VP and
Secretary. In addition to
the annual events, this
year Main Street Lockport
Board Members collaborated
with local organizations
on even more fun community
events:
• Coffin Race — an inaugural
event, sponsored by
the Rotary Club was a fun,
friendly, creative and festive
competition. Based on
the turnout this year, this is
a not-to-be-missed Lockport
event.
• Christmas in the Square
— Main Street Lockport
hosted the Passport to downtown
businesses. Attendees
visited participating businesses
to get their passport
stamped to qualify for a
raffle. Main Street Lockport
was happy to provide the
winning prize, an Xbox, to
one lucky family.
• New Years Eve at the
Museum — in coordination
with Ember’s Tap House,
Main Street was to help
sponsor a wonderful surfand-turf
meal, with live music,
benefitting the Illinois
State Museum.
One key element of 2019
is to foster strong collaborations
with other local
community service groups.
Together, we can not only
support each other’s unique
missions, but also help promote
all of the opportunities
and community activities.
Main Street members
will expand collaboration
to include: Rotary, Lockport
Woman’s Club, Lockport
Township Park District,
Lockport Chamber of Commerce,
Boy Scouts, Illinois
State Museum Board, Lockport
The transfusion nonprofit
for micro-pantries throughout
Will County.
“With our events, we always
like to feature some
ways of giving back,”
Warthen said.
The slate of complimentary,
30-minute workout sessions
kicks off with a cardio
class from Planet Fitness,
the expo’s presenting sponsor,
and keeps rolling from
there. Other options include
a cardio, strength and core
conditioning class by Fit-
4Mom, and dance fitness
from Heart & Sole Dance.
“The first year we did
this, I wasn’t sure if people
would work out, or what the
response would be,” Warthen
said. “But people actually
got really into it, and
the classes are always one
of the biggest draws.”
The Healthy Living Expo,
like all 22nd Century Media
events, is designed as
an opportunity for community
members and business
owners to interact, with both
sides benefitting from the exchange,
Warthen explained.
“It’s an opportunity for
folks to come in and check
out a bunch of things that
can better their lives, and
we’re able to do it at no
charge because of our great
vendors,” she said.
wishes.
Mokena’s Pink Slip Boutique,
Make-A-Wish Foundation,
granted a wish for a Bourbonnais
teenager who recently
went into remission
from an aggressive form of
Stage III B Hodgkin lymphoma.
Eighteen-year-old Julianna
Bourassa’s eyes grew
wide in shock as she stepped
into the Pink Slip Boutique
and was told to pick out any
prom dress from the store
to wear to Bradley-Bourbonnais
Community High
School’s prom in May.
”It was tough to keep it a
secret, with how close we
are, but the look on her face
was worth a million dollars,”
her grandmother Debbie
Bourassa said.
The prom dress was a
wish that only Debbie knew
Julianna wanted, until two
local wish-granters asked
what Julianna wanted for
Christmas.
“That was honestly the
best experience I could
ever have,” Julianna said. “I
haven’t felt happiness like
that in a long time.”
I
want to preface this
column by saying I’m a
foolish man and I know
I will regret these words.
That being said, it has
been difficult for me to not
wonder recently whether or
not there might be the faintest
of lights at the end of the
tunnel of this winter season.
I know I have written at
From Page 8
He will hand the reins
over to the Rev. Tommy
Thompson on Jan. 13 during
a special service dubbed
“The Crossing,” which is to
honor the past and look toward
the future.
The transition has been
gradual since the church voted
to approve Thompson as
the new administrative pastor
in 2017.
“There’s an anticipation
swelling; it’s been a
good year,” Thompson said.
“With the transition, we
were very methodical with
it, to make sure the church
had the opportunity to get
used to the adjustment, as
well, especially after [having]
the same family pastor
for 68 years.”
least a few columns previously
about how winters in
the Chicago area feel like
they last forever, and we are
not to believe any false hope
Mother Nature may dangle
before us until at least April.
But I must say, the recent
mild temperatures have me
dreaming of an early spring.
Now I’m no fool, I realize we
have at least a couple months
of winter ahead of us, but if
it’s anything like the weather
we’ve been experiencing so
far, I’m not too worried about
it. And yes, that sound you
just heard was me knocking
on every wooden surface I
can find.
Aside from the warm temperatures
outside, the heating
up of the postseason pushes
for the various high school
sports also has me looking
past the winter doldrums.
Coverage of the LTHS
boys bowling team’s strong
performance at the South-
West Suburban Conference
meet can be found on Page
30 of this issue, and it appears
once again that both
Lockport Township bowling
programs are prepared to
make runs at state trophies.
Meanwhile, the Lockport
boys swimming and diving
team took on Lincoln-Way
East last week and you can
find that story on Page 31.
Although the team score
TRANSFORM YOUR
YOUR STORAGE
didn’t turn out in favor of
the Porters, diver Wrigley
Fields continued to show
that despite his legendary
baseball name, diving is his
sport and he is darn good at
it. We also have coverage of
the boys (Page 30) and girls
(Page 29) basketball teams
who will both be looking to
make some noise in postseason
play in a few weeks.
Mild temperatures and
the flipping of the sports
calendar has me buying into
the idea that spring isn’t as
far off as it may seem. Now
whether that actually proves
to be true is yet to be seen.
Monthly movie night at library encourages creativity
Mary Compton
Freelance Reporter
Boxes with drawings
of horses could be seen
throughout the children’s
room at White Oak Library
District’s Lockport Branch.
Several young children
were excited to design their
box to sit in as they waited
to watch “Sheriff Callie’s
Wild West” Friday, Jan. 4.
The Drive-in Movie event is
just one of many programs
offered at the library.
Lockport resident Ashley
Sharp thought it would be
a good program for her two
children to attend.
“We are here a lot,” she
said. “... These programs
bring you to the library more
often because there is more
than books.”
Besides bringing her children
to the programs, Sharp
uses the library several times
a week checking out DVD’s
and books, with her favorite
being healthy lifestyle and
Lockport resident Dylan Herring, 8, gets comfortable in the
box he turned into a horse during the library event.
cookbooks.
“It’s so important to start
your children reading and
being at the library at a
young age,” Sharp said.
“Getting them to love books
and reading. It’s part of our
daily life. Every night we
read books, my daughter
enjoying princess books and
my son loves anything about
farmers and tractors.”
Another mom, Sue Herring
of Lockport, brought her
three boys to the program.
“They have so many events
here at the library for all
ages,” Herring said. “There is
something for everyone, and
most of them are free.”
Herring takes part in
events throughout the year
with her boys.
“We did the candy houses
a few weeks ago,” she said.
“They enjoyed that because
they got to eat so much candy
and there was frosting involved.
“The summer reading
program is another favorite.
They get prizes and a favorite
of spinning the wheel.”
Baby Shark Party, ESL
Conversation Group, Inbe-
TWEENer Gaming and DIY
Victorian Paper Fans is just a
sample of one day of events
for children at the library.
Jaci Kohn, the children’s
services supervisor at the
Lockport branch, enjoys her
job of working with the children,
and helping to plan the
programs is one of her favorite
parts of the job.
“I started the Drive-in
movie program,” Kohn said.
“We do this the first Friday
of every month which includes
watching a TV show.
They also make some sort
of vehicle or animal based
on what they’re watching.
They get to create their own
design and take it home with
them.”
Kohn uses boxes from
the books sent to the library
which children can utilize to
design their own vehicle.
“This program started
with two kids coming and
each month it seems to get
bigger and bigger,” Kohn
said.
There is a new program in
2019 in the children’s service
area called Alphabet
Soup Time. It is to be held
at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays
and is for children ages 3-5.
According to Kohn, It’s a
spin off from story time.
“The library is a family
place, it’s a community
place to gather,” Kohn said.
“Not only are kids reading
books but they are having
a great time with these programs
as well.”
Staff Report
Saddlewood Estates, a
neighborhood of 44 homes,
has transformed an annual
community event into an
opportunity to give back to
those in need.
For the past 23 years,
Saddlewood Estates President
Jackie Sulich has organized
a Neighborhood
Holiday Walk. Originally,
the community collected $5
per household attending, to
go toward a gift for each of
the three hosts who opened
their homes and kitchens to
the neighborhood for the
event.
In 2013, instead of a token
gift to the hosts, donations
went to the local Lockport
FISH Food Pantry. Each
year, the community has
exceeded the money raised
from the previous year.
Last year, the neighborhood
raised $1,205. Since
2013, Saddlewood Estates
has raised more than $4,500
for the Lockport FISH Food
Pantry.
The Dish
Frank’s Shrimp & Chicken’s latest catch: family dining
T.J. Kremer III
Contributing Editor
For the past 14 years,
Frank’s Shrimp & Chicken
in Mokena has been serving
up some of the area’s freshest
seafood and frying up
some of the tastiest chicken.
In 2019, Frank’s will have
something new to offer customers:
an expanded dining
room.
The restaurant’s expansion
is slated for late January.
The food menu will not
change, though owner Frank
Castro has applied for a liquor
license to be able to offer
customers wine and beer
with their meals.
Castro said the idea to expand
the dining area came
from numerous requests
from his customers, and
when the shop next door became
vacant he decided now
was the time to cast a bigger
net.
“We’re going to have a
nice big entrance for the
customer to sit down and relax,
watch TV, have maybe
a glass of wine or a beer,”
Castro said.
Castro credited his son
Nick with being a big part
of the reason the restaurant’s
expansion is on the horizon
Nick started working with
his father when Nick was
around 13 years old. At that
time, Castro owned JR Seafood
in Oak Lawn.
“We still see a lot of our
customers who used to come
into JR come in here now,”
Castro said. “They moved
south, and they’re very happy
to see us here.”
Castro’s love of seafood
goes even further back than
that, back to his days working
in Chicago’s busy fish market
scene.
“In my younger years, I
started working at this place
downtown called Chicago
Fish House, in the processing
department, where all
the fresh fish used to come
in,” Castro said.
The seafood is flown into
Chicago O’Hare International
Airport from all over
the world and then sold at a
market in Lombard, where
Castro makes the 5:30 a.m.
trip 4-5 times per week to
personally inspect all his
purchases and bring them
back to his restaurant.
Of course, there is more on
the menu than just seafood;
items offered on Frank’s
has quickly become one of
No Earnest Money Required When Purchasing A
K. Hovnanian® Homes Quick Move-In Home In Chicagoland
K. Hovnanian® Homes is celebrating the start of 2019 by
making it easier for new buyers to purchase one of its homes
in Chicagoland. For a limited time, the builder is requiring no
deposit and no earnest money on Quick Move-In Homes that
close by April 26, 2019. Restrictions apply; see a sales consultant
for complete details.
“When possible, we look for ways to remove barriers to
homeownership,” said Andy Konovodoff, president of K.
Hovnanian® Developments of Illinois, Inc. “By requiring no
earnest money, we’re hoping to speed up the buying process
for those who may be putting off making a move as they save
for a deposit.”
He added that there have been some concerns about fluctuations
in interest rates recently.
“Most lenders will lock in a mortgage rate for 30 to 60 days,”
he explained. “So someone buying a Quick Move-In Home now
shouldn’t have to worry about rates ticking up before they move.”
Currently, K. Hovnanian® Homes has Quick Move-In Homes
ready for delivery in as soon as 30 to 60 days in the following areas:
• Plano: single family homes from the lower $200s
• Sycamore: single family homes from the mid $200s
• Oswego: single family homes from the lower $300s
• Manhattan: single family homes from the lower $300s
• Naperville: attached villas from the upper $300s
• Libertyville: luxury townhomes from the upper $400s
• Naperville: single family homes from the mid $600s
• Chicago’s Sauganash neighborhood: single family homes
from the lower $800
All prices are subject to change without notice, and home
shoppers can find more information about these Quick Move-In
Homes at www.khov.com/chicago.
“One of the many benefits of purchasing a Quick Move-In
Home is that buyers do not have to wait the longer cycle that
comes with building from the ground up,” said Konovodoff. “Yet,
they receive all the benefits of new construction.”
These benefits include fresh floor plans laid out for the way people
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Thomas Abramite
Thomas Abramite is a sophomore at Lockport
Township. He is one of the top swimmers
for the Porters swim team and plans to
play water polo this spring.
How has the swim season gone so
far?
It’s been fun. I’ve met a lot of new people.
We have a lot of strenuous practices, but they
pay off at the end.
This is your second season on the
varsity swim team. Did you expect
to come in as a freshman and make
varsity?
Yes, I did. I’ve been swimming competitively
since I was nine, so coming into high
school I knew I had a better chance to swim
up on varsity since I was prepared for it.
How did you first get involved in
swimming?
I’ve been involved in swimming for a long
time. I learned to swim at age four and my
family has always been involved in it. My
mom, Katy, swam for the Lockport Stingrays
club team back in the day. As I said, I’ve
swum competitively since I was nine. I just
love the water too.
Do you play any other sports?
Yes, I play water polo. I was on the JV
team last season and hope to be on the varsity
this year.
So what do you like better, swimming
or water polo?
I like water polo better. It’s more of a team
sport. In water polo, the games are always
competitive and changeable. The only thing
we can change in swimming is our time.
Randy Whalen/22nd Century Media
What are your favorite swimming
events?
The 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard
breaststroke. I also like to do the breaststroke
part of the medley relay and individual medley.
That stroke is just the easiest for me and
I’m pretty good at it.
What have you learned from Lockport
coach Jason Ozbolt?
I’ve learned a lot from him. Mostly to keep
at practice and to keep pushing yourself.
He’s also helped me in my technique and
how to improve it.
Do you do anything to hype yourself
up before a competition or game?
I usually just say positive thoughts and
want to do well. It’s all psychology. It’s just
important to stay mentally positive.
You’re only a sophomore, but would
you like to swim or play water polo
in college?
I haven’t thought that far ahead yet, but if
I did I’d probably swim. Just because I like
water polo more doesn’t mean I’m better at
it. I feel I’m more advanced in swimming.
What’s the best thing about being an
athlete at Lockport?
Just that the teams and the coaches are all
very good. The coaches are really good at
what they do. Also, our facilities are really
good. Especially compared to some other
schools.
Porters looking to eliminate ‘bad spurts’
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
Based on the records of
both teams, anyone who
wandered into the gym at
halftime of the Lincoln-Way
East/Lockport Township
girls basketball game last
week was surprised to see
the score: Lockport 25, East
24.
The Porters continued
their lead for the first few
minutes of the third quarter
as well. But then East turned
up the pressure and went on
to a rather convincing 61-43
victory over the Porters in a
SouthWest Suburban Conference
Blue Division game
on Friday, Jan. 4, in Frankfort.
Katchie Savic led the way
for East with 18 points. Sydney
Nekola contributed 12
key points and Olivia Molnar
added 10 points for the
Griffins.
The loss was the third in
a row for Lockport (7-13,
0-2), which was coming off
a fourth-place finish at the
Oswego East Holiday Tournament.
Junior center Jenna
Cotter (8 rebounds) and
sophomore forward Elena
Knebel (14 rebounds) each
scored 12 points to pace the
Porters.
A 3-pointer by junior
guard Sawyer Hollatz (5
points) with 5:24 left in the
third quarter to put Lockport
up 30-28 seemed to be the
wake up call for the Griffins,
who embarked on a 16-0 run
in just over a three-minute
span.
The Porters did close back
within 46-36 at the end of
the third quarter, but never
got closer. Junior guard Lilly
Genis (6 points) hit a pair
of 3-pointers in the opening
minutes of the fourth quarter
as East opened up a 54-36
lead. Lockport responded
with a 7-0 run of its own and
got within 54-43 on a layup
by Knebel with 3:20 to play
in the game, but didn’t score
again.
At the end of the first quarter,
the game was knotted at
13-13. The Porters scored
the first seven points of the
second quarter to take their
largest lead. But back came
East as a layup by Savic put
her team back ahead 24-23
with 1:21 left in the first half.
Cotter, however, hit two free
throws with 27.1 seconds to
play in the half to give Lockport
the advantage that they
would take into halftime.
Senior guard Payton Grcevic
also contributed six points
for the Porters.
“One thing we’ve got better
with is most every game
we’re competitive,” Lockport
coach Dan Kelly said.
“Offensively we are looking
to be more aggressive. But
Lincoln-Way East kept pressuring
the ball and any mistake
we made, they capitalized.
We turned it over way
too much.
“We’ve had many games
where we’ve played well for
two-and-a-half, three, and
even three-and-a half quarters.
But we just can’t finish.
We always have that bad
spurt.”
That’s exactly what happened
again to Lockport (7-
14) the next day, Saturday,
Jan. 5. The Porters traveled
to New Lenox and let a late
lead slip away in a 68-60
loss to Providence. Ahead
32-28 at halftime and 51-47
after three, they were outscored
by the Celtics 21-9 in
the fourth quarter.
Cotter (14 points) led
Lockport while senior guard
Kaeli Ford added 12 points.

Lockport finishes second in Blue Division at conference meet
Porters JV team
easily wins, placing
Top 3 individuals
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
Things didn’t start out
Blue and Red, but they became
that way about halfway
through the SouthWest
Suburban Conference meet
held Saturday, Jan. 5, at Orland
Bowl in Orland Park.
The past two seasons,
there’s been one combined
SWSC champion because
there were only nine teams
in the entire league. But
when Bradley-Bourbonnais
added bowling again for
this season, it jumped to 10
teams.
Still, when the teams arrived
for the meet last weekend,
they were under the
impression it was one big
conference pot. But since the
SWSC bylaws stated if there
were 10 or more teams in the
conference there should be
two divisions, it was ruled at
the midway point that there
would be a Red and Blue
side. The problem was there
weren’t enough medals and
trophies to go around. So
there was a coin-flip to determine
who would get to
take home the hardware that
day and who would have to
wait to get it as the league
ordered more medals and
trophies.
On the Blue Division side
for varsity, Sandburg ran
away with it on its home
lanes with an overall best
score of 6,393 for its second
title in the past three seasons.
Cameron Crowe, who had a
279 in the second game for
the Eagles, was the division’s
individual champion
with a 1,393.
Lockport, which was the
defending conference champion
and has the most league
titles with nine, was second
on the Blue side with a 5,987
total. Lincoln-Way East
(5,972) placed a close third,
Stagg (5,605) was fourth and
Bolingbrook (5,144) took
fifth.
Although the Porters were
second, over 400 pins out of
Lockport’s Jimmy Rozhon watches his ball roll down the lane
Saturday, Jan. 5, during the SouthWest Suburban Conference
meet at Orland Bowl. Bob Klein/22nd Century Media
first, assistant coach Roger
McDaniel was happy.
“This is the best we’ve
bowled at a tournament all
year,” said McDaniel, who
was filling in for head coach
Ron Davis, who was out sick.
“We have not been a tournament
team, but everyone did
a little better on what they
had to do. We’ve switched
some things up, and the kids
are bowling well now. We’re
looking forward to regional,
sectional and hopefully getting
back to state.”
Senior Even Pleshar led
the way for Lockport with
a 1,340 series, which was
good for second in the Blue
and included a high game of
257 and a low of 199.
“We didn’t know much
about what was going on today
when we arrived,” Pleshar
said. “We changed the
lineup some, but we came
out and bowled really well
the first game (1,166), and
that seemed to really help.
We really wanted to focus on
picking up spares, especially
in the afternoon because that
makes or breaks your team
score.
“This was the best sixgame
series I’ve bowled all
season, so I’m very pleased.
As a team, we almost averaged
200 per person each
game. That was a big peak
for us. A lot of us showed up,
and it’s going to be interesting
in the postseason.”
Junior James Kontos (8th,
1,223), senior Ray Bufka
(1,189) and sophomore Tim
Hoak (1,154) bowled every
game for Lockport. Senior
Jim Rozhon (639) and freshman
Gavin Gucwa (442)
each bowled three games for
the Porters.
East made a late charge
with a 3,046 afternoon series
but placed 15 pins behind
the Porters.
For the Red Division
with varsity, West finished
with a 6-game pinfall total
of 6,175 to easily defeat
Bradley-Bourbonnais
(5,795), which was led
by third-place individual,
sophomore Gage Campbell
(1,269). Paced by the
second-place individual,
Christopher Moore (1,332),
Thornridge (5,794) took
third. Lincoln-Way Central
(5,743) was fourth and Andrew
(5,535) finished fifth.
Lincoln Way West’s Michael
Nork bowled a 1,465
series, which was a 244 average,
good to win the overall
individual championship.
The veteran bowler, who
helped West place 11th in
the state last season, had a
pair of 234 games and those
were his lowest. He had a
276 in the fourth game. His
total was 72 pins better than
Sandburg’s Crowe.
On the JV side, Lockport
easily won with a 5,926 total.
The Porters had the Top
3 individuals in junior Jake
Grau (1,360), senior Andrew
Bean (1,281) and sophomore
Caleb Derrig (1,230).
Lockport and the host
Raiders are at the Bolingbrook
Regional, which is to
be held Saturday, Jan. 12, at
the Brunswick Zone in Woodridge.
Boys Basketball
Porters grind out seven-point victory over Griffins in conference opener
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
If someone thought a couple
of close losses were going
to break the confidence of
the Lockport Township boys
basketball team, they can
think again.
Senior guards Jake Karli
and Matt Hatzopoulos combined
for 33 points as the
Porters took the lead at halftime
and ground out a 51-44
victory over Lincoln-Way
East in a SouthWest Suburban
Conference Blue Division
tussle on Friday, Jan. 4,
in Frankfort.
With the victory, Lockport
(8-4, 1-0) surpassed its
win total from the previous
season. The win also ended
the Porters two-game losing
streak, with both of those
losses coming by two points
at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament.
Senior Julian Barr
(10 points) led the Griffins
(7-9, 1-2).
“Coach Hespell tells us
all the time, ‘Be the aggressor,
not the guy on your heels
being the prey,’” Karli said.
“Just be the aggressor, and I
think that led us to a victory.”
Hespell said that’s what
Karli, who led all scorers
with 19 points and added
seven rebounds, has to do as
a veteran.
“Jake has to do that for
us,” Hespell said of Karli
being aggressive. “He’s a
three-year varsity starter. He
showed some good composure
and started taking the
ball to the basket.”
Lockport scored the first
four points of the game, but
were trailing 14-6 before
Karli nailed a 3-pointer from
the top of the key at the first
quarter buzzer to narrow the
deficit to 14-9.
That also seemed to switch
the momentum of the game.
The Griffins shot just 2-of-12
from the field for the second
quarter. In the meantime,
Karli started taking the ball
inside and scored six points
in a 10-0 run that put the Porters
ahead 19-16.
An East 3-pointer from the
top of the key tied it one last
time at 19-19 with just over
a minute left in the first quarter,
but after ripping the ball
away from an East player,
Lockport senior center Tommy
Halatek (10 points, 11 rebounds)
scored inside to give
his team a lead it would not
relinquish.
“He’s 100 percent improved,”
East junior center
Sean McLaughlin said of
Halatek. ‘”He was a load.
He’s tough to move down on
the block.”
The Griffins closed to within
45-41 with just over two
minutes to play on a steal and
layup by junior guard Matt
Wasso, but Lockport held on
as junior reserve guard Jake
Kaczmarek clinched the win
with a pair of free throws in
the final seconds.
“I think last year they beat
us twice by 25-plus points,
and I think it just shows
that we’re ready to go for
the conference this season,”
Karli said. “I just think
we’re more confident with
ourselves and opportunities
just come easier, either in
getting the ball into the basket
or just being a menace on
defense.”

Lincoln-Way East is turning
into a boys swimming
beast.
The Griffins tuned up for
the second half of the season
by waltzing into Lockport
and defeating the host
Porters 141-41 in a South-
West Suburban Conference
meeting on Thursday, Jan.
3, at the Lockport East campus.
East (3-1, 3-1) won every
event but the diving. The
Porters (2-3, 1-2) were coming
off a long layoff and got
a near-record performance
from Wrigley Fields as he
won the diving competition.
But otherwise, the meet,
during which both schools
swam people in off events,
was all Griffins. They not
only won every race, but
had the top two or three finishers
in most as well. Cooper
Cunningham, Mason
Rhode and Bryce Wyma
were multiple individual
winners for East.
Easily winning the diving
competition was
Fields. The senior scored
a 333.65, which was less
than two points away from
the school-record mark of
335.05 that he set earlier
this season.
“It’s just a lot of practice,”
Fields said of his success. “I
practice year-round, including
all summer long to get
ready. It’s all worth it in the
end. My goal was Top 8, but
it’s now Top 6 in the state.”
Fields has another goal
this season, however. That
is to advance to state and
medal in two sports. He also
joined the Porters co-ed
cheerleading squad this season
and is one of three guys
on the team.
“This is my first year on
the cheer team,” he said. “I
looked at the schedules and
said, ‘let’s try it.’ We figured
it out and there’s not much
conflict. But I will miss the
conference swim meet [on
Feb. 1 and 2] for state cheerleading.
But I want to get to
the state finals in both cheer
and diving. I practice many
hours each day on both and
I’m very tired, but it will all
pay off in the end.”
Placing second for
Lockport in the 100-yard
breaststroke was Thomas
Abramite (1:04.69), who
came in less than threetenths
of a second behind
fellow sophomore Cooper
Cunningham (1:04.43).
Also placing second for
the Porters was Rory Flanagan
(2:26.74) in the 200-
yard individual medley,
Maks Pabian (5:38.59) in
the 500-yard freestyle, and
Kevin Moe (1:05.06) in the
100-yard backstroke.
Placing third in the 200-
yard medley relay was
the Lockport foursome of
Moe, Abramite, Michael
Bates and Casper Harmata
(1:54.36). Also in the 200-
yard freestyle relay, it was
the Porter team of Caleb
and Moe (1:47.80) with a
third-place finish.
“We were missing a few
kids [against East], but
overall we did well,” Lockport
coach Jason Ozbolt
said. “We are a young team
and the guys are doing well.
We need to work on more
mental toughness as we
have over break. The back
half of the season is rough,
but we are moving in the
right direction. At the end
of the season, we are looking
to drop time. These guys
are young and untested in a
sectional, so the sky is the
limit to how well they can
do.”
The Porters had been off
of competitive swimming
for 19 days. The last time
Mickey Albrecht executes the backstroke during the meet.
they competed was on Dec.
15 at the Neuqua Valley Invite.
The two teams saw each
other again at the end of last
week. On Saturday, Jan. 5,
they were both at the New
Trier Dive Invite and, in
swimming, at the Evanston
Invite.
