Letter from the Principal
Dear Parents,
Greetings from West Leyden High School! It seems
like the year just started, yet we have already successfully
completed the first semester. I want to thank
each of you for the support you give your student.
Working together we are making a difference. We
have more students passing their classes than ever
before as they prepare for life after high school.
At the start of a new year and a new semester it provides
a good time to sit down with your student to set
goals for the second semester. Please focus on attendance,
homework, and grades. Students that are here
every day and do their homework will get good
grades. “Take Your Parent to School Day” is coming
up on February 17. I invite each of you to come with
your student on that day. It will be fun to see firsthand
what a great education your students are receiving.
I have said many times that we have the best teachers,
parents, and students in the country. Thank you for
all you do! If you can’t make it here on February 17,
please feel free to call me and we can set up your own
personal visit. Have a great 2010!
Sincerely,
Wilford D. Wagner
Principal
WELCOME TO THE DEANS’ CORNER
Teenagers have always been a “source of wonder” to each generation. Basically, they have not
changed. They want to be cared about by their families and accepted by their peers. What has changed is
society and what is often considered acceptable because “everyone” is doing it. Recently a study conducted
by the Nielsen Media (source: “Family Circle Magazine” Feb. 2010) reported on what keeps kids up beyond
9:00 p.m. Teen responses were as follows: 24%=computer games, 34%=text messaging, 36%=watching a
DVD/video, 42%=listening to an MP3 player, 44%=talking on the phone, 55%=using the computer to go
online, 57%=doing homework, and 82% watching TV. What is your child doing after 9:00 p.m.?
We don’t usually suggest magazine choices to parents; however, two recent magazines have had very good
articles about teens. The February 2010 issue of “Family Circle” magazine has a very good article about sex
texting that will help give you some guidance when talking to your teenager. Another fairly recent publication
of the magazine “Chicago” September 2009 issue published a special report called “Teen Confidential.”
Often these reports or numbers are taken from places other than the area in which we live. However, this information
was taken from the Chicago area which includes its nearby suburbs. Both are worth a look.
Mr. Ruettiger/Mrs. Sremaniak
Spring is coming and so is Empty Bowls!
Thursday May 6, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. Art Club will host its 4th
annual Empty Bowls event. We will have over 200 bowls to choose
from and many fabulous soups. Make sure to mark this fundraiser on
your calendar right away!
FERTILIZATION SCHEDULE
The groundsmen at Leyden High Schools will fertilize March 29 through April 4, 2010. All
areas will be marked with flags once they are completed. We cannot give an exact date because
of weather conditions.
INCOMING FRESHMAN MEDICAL FORMS DUE JUNE 1
By Illinois state law (school code, section 27-8.1), all incoming freshman students must have a
physical examination taken within a year prior to entering the 9 th grade. As approved by the
District 212 Board of Education, all freshman medical forms are due in the West Leyden High
School Health Office by June 1, 2010. After the June 1 deadline, a progressive scale of late
fees will apply for freshman medical forms as follows:
$30.00 late fee June 2 through June 30
$40.00 late fee July 1 through July 31
$50.00 late fee after August 1
Late fees may be paid when physicals are turned in or at Freshman Orientation along with other registration
fees. Students may not start school until all medical forms are turned in and checked for completion by
the school health aide.
*Please note: It is getting to be a very busy time of year for doctor’s offices and you must allow time to obtain
an appointment. Please make your student’s physical examination appointment now so that late fees may be
avoided.
WHAT IS “ASK THE EXPERT” DAY?
and Industrial Tech) students will be given the opportunity to interact with professionals in a variety of careers
during "Ask the Expert" Day, February 3, 2010. Business professionals are invited to serve as guest speakers
in the classrooms to discuss their career and perhaps a particular academic subject area. This program is intended
to help students better understand the direct relationship of curricular subject areas to life skills and career
opportunities in the workplace.
WEST LEYDEN STUDENT AT ALL STATE SHOW
West Leyden once again sent one of our best to the Illinois High School Theatre
Festival All State show. For the second year in a row, Henry Mattheissen, a senior, was
chosen to work on the technical crew for the production. Henry worked as a carpenter
and ran the fly rail for the show "Urinetown." Several hundred students audition for the
cast, crew and orchestra with less than 100 getting in. Henry is now the set designer for
Leyden's current show "Dancing at Lughnasa". We are all proud of Henry's
commitment to the theatre.
