Last Sunday morning a large group of boys assembled with their fathers at Point
Walter to experience the Share the Journey program. This parent-led undertaking has
become a signature event for our College and was again enthusiastically embraced
by our community. As the morning unfolded, it was very evident that a time of great
significance was being shared by many of those present.
Whilst the individual circumstances of many of the fathers in attendance would have
been quite diverse, they were united in their desire to enhance their relationships with
their sons and to be strong and positive influences in their development. Research
repeatedly shows that strong male role-modelling is an important contributor to boys
developing a positive self-image, forming mutually beneficial friendships and having a
healthy respect for women.
These aims are clearly compatible with the broader pastoral development program
undertaken by the College. I’m sure they are also outcomes that every family is
working hard to achieve at home. I commend all of the fathers who had the courage
and foresight to attend last weekend and to make this essential investment in their
sons.
I would also like to thank all of those who were responsible for the planning and
presentation of this program:
• Dads, Mr Michael O’Connor, Mr Greg Hayes, Mr Phil O’Neill, Mr Phil Allen,
Mr Michael Burfoot and Mr Rob Leicester who worked tirelessly to ensure the
success of the day.
• Mr Peter Christie snr and his son Peter (Class of ’10) who each delivered poignant
and thought-provoking talks at different times during the morning.
• The many other staff and senior students who contributed to the day in many
different ways.
Perhaps the real power of this program rests in its simplicity and its capacity to remind
dads about the critical function they play in the lives of their sons. It emphasises the
fact that opportunities to interrelate need to be consciously arranged. If we delay the
accumulation of ‘frequent father points’, the years and the opportunities can quickly
pass by.
WeLCOMe
At an assembly earlier this week we welcomed Mr Hideo Kodama and thirteen
students from Tohrei Fujisawa High School in Japan. I have no doubt that the cultural
exchange that is taking place in classrooms and the school grounds will be invaluable
to the boys at CBC and our visitors. Thank you to all of those families that are currently
acting as hosts for our guests.
sCHOOL BaLL
The dancing lessons are completed, correct etiquette has been reinforced and the
suits are hired in preparation for the School Ball this evening. I trust that each of our
Year 12 boys and their partners will enjoy a wonderful night and that their parents will
manage to take just the right photo to preserve the memories of the occasion.
VICE PRINCIPAL
The House System at the College has a focus on developing a sense of community amongst the
students and provides increased opportunities for involvement in House activities. In order to
include students in the planning and shaping of such House activities, each House has a House
Council which is comprised of students (House Councillors) from each year level.
The role of the House Councillor is to represent and serve the needs of the student community and
to provide them with leadership in all House functions. They have responsibility for developing a
sense of community and fostering participation within their affiliated House. The House Councillors
work closely with the elected House Prefects as well as the Head of House and other staff members
and are actively involved in all aspects of the House Program.
Boys from all year levels are invited to nominate for the position of House Councillor. They need
to be endorsed by their respective Mentor Teacher and must have achieved the following criteria:
• achieved an average of at least 85% Positive ‘Indicators of Performance’ on their Student
Reports.
• achieved indicators of ‘High’ or ‘Excellent’ for Mentor Group qualities on their Student Reports.
At the respective House Assemblies this week, the following boys were presented as House
Councillors for 2012. They were presented with their House Councillor Badge. Congratulations to
all of these boys.
The College will celebrate Edmund Rice Day on Friday, 4 May (Week 2 of Term 2). This is a significant
day on the College calendar, focussing on the life of Blessed Edmund Rice and the tradition of
Christian Brothers’ education, both at our College and throughout the world.
The boys will begin the day at 8.45am with Mentor Period and then the whole College will gather
at the Fremantle Basilica to celebrate our Edmund Rice Mass. On returning to school, the boys will
have a recess break as normal. Following this, each Mentor Group will begin preparation for the
Edmund Rice Festival. This will consist of a number of activities/stalls, organised and coordinated
by the respective Mentor Groups, that will sell food or drinks, organise raffles and competitions
and provide other fun activities that add to the celebration of this special College day. The day
will conclude with an assembly in the Gymnasium where various raffles will be drawn and final
instructions given prior to a dismissal at 3:00pm.
Each Mentor Group will be working throughout this term, and early in Term 2, in order to finalise the
organisation of their particular activity/stall. Each student will be asked to help in this organisation
and to contribute $8 - $10 to fund the hiring and buying of the equipment and materials required
for their particular stall. They will be advised of the specific details by their respective Mentor
Teacher and this money will be collected within the Mentor Group during the first two weeks of
Term 2. Parents can also help by forwarding any suggestions of available equipment and/or fun
ideas to help with the day. Last year, a number of parents were able to offer some expertise and
equipment that proved to be very useful. Please pass on any ideas to your son as planning for this
big day starts now!
This day allows our boys to gather as a community and reflect on our Edmund Rice tradition. On
the day itself, the boys will be asked to bring some money along in order to fully participate –
purchasing food and drinks, participating in events and raffles, etc. All proceeds made on the day
will provide some valuable funds for the Edmund Rice Ministries.
When the boys commence after the term break, they will be required to wear their winter uniform
immediately from the first day for students in Term 2 (Tuesday, 24th April).
During Terms 2 and 3, traditionally our winter season, the boys are asked to wear their full winter
uniform at all times. The weather can be quite mild on some days; however, the boys are still
required to wear their winter uniform. A full description (and pictures) of the College winter uniform
can be found in your son’s Student Diary.
WINTER UNIFORM FOR YEARS 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11 (Worn from the first day of, and then during,
Terms 2 & 3)
• School trousers Charcoal, and they must be worn at the waist. (Boxer shorts/underwear
LEARNING AREA UPDATE
On Thursday, 3 May at 7pm, our
Drama students from Years 8-12 will be
performing Antigone and other Greek
Gods and Legends in the Arts Learning
Area (ALA).
Tickets are $5 per person or $5 per family.
All members of the CBC community are
welcome. Please be aware numbers are
limited so we advise you to pre-purchase
tickets from the front reception in week
10 of Term 1 and week 1 of Term 2 so as
not to miss out.
This performance is part of the students’
semester one assessment, so please
come and support the boys.
Mrs Rosalba Jeffreys
The Have Sum Fun competition organised by the Mathematical Association of WA (MAWA) took
place in the last two weeks, with three teams of six boys each representing the College.
In the upper school competition, six Year 11 and 12 boys competed against 35 other teams from
different schools in the South of the River part of the competition. The upper school team was
formed by the following students:
David King (Y12) Michael Messineo (Y12)
Joel Frewin (Y12) Ben Anandappa (Y11)
Thomas Godsall (Y11) Alessandro Monaco (Y11)
The upper school team was placed sixth, which is a great accomplishment. The following boys were
selected in the lower school team:
Jake Weller (Y7) Henry Rogerson (Y7)
Hugo Salvage (Y7) Ryan Pace (Y8)
Riley Faulds (Y8) Conor Hars (Y8)
Calogero Martelli (Y9) Matthew Patroni (Y9)
Nicholas Thuys(Y9) Matthew Thomas (Y10)
Anthony Iannantuoni (Y10) Liam Romano (Y10)
The 9 and 10 lower school team was placed seventh while the Years 7/8 school team was 26th among 45 teams from the South of the River section of the competition.
Congratulations to all the boys who took part.
It was a difficult task to select three boys from each year group, given that many other boys also
wished to participate. Unfortunately, MAWA caps teams at one per school, with a two-team
exception for lower school.
The next competition CBC will participate in is the Australian Mathematics Competition held on
4 August later this year. For this event we are able to enter as many boys as we wish, and we are
certain we will see the same level of enthusiasm.
year 10 extension
englisH
sHare tHe Journey
On the morning of Monday, 19 March, the Year 10 extension English class along with Mrs Brown
went on an excursion to the Fremantle youth literature centre to meet author Matt Ottely. The
excursion lasted 2 hours and was filled with anecdotes from Matt Ottely’s time as a stockman
working with cattle which was also the basis for his book Requiem for a Beast. As a class we will be
studying the text later in the year but because none of us had actually read the book a good part
of the day was made up of Matt Ottely assisted by one of the centre’s education officers explaining
the book to us. The book at first sounded very simple, a story about a boy who is just starting out
as a stockman and the story of his first attempt to capture a bull. However, as the day wore on the
author began delving deeper and deeper into his novel and as terms such as Bungalung, allegory
and paradoxes began to come out, we began to understand the complexity of this picture book/
novel. He explained to us some of the symbolism he used in the novel including the bull and the
boy and the many influences that aboriginal storytelling and other experiences in his life had on the
story. We also listened to the music which is also part of the novel and viewed the images which
created very powerful emotions in many of us. We wrote a few notes and got an author’s insight
into his own novel. At the end of the 2 hour session we were all buzzing with anticipation to read
this incredibly intricate novel and I’m sure that what we learnt on the day will be a huge help when
we finally get to study it.
Anthony Iannantuoni
Year 10 Patrick
It was great to see so many dads and their sons again at this year’s Share the Journey event. This
unique CBC Fremantle initiative aims to help foster relationships between boys and their fathers
and continues to grow in numbers each year.
Approximately 140 dads and sons gathered at Point Walter at 10.00am last Sunday and enjoyed a
pleasant walk together to Bicton Baths and back. The day involved much discussion between dads
and sons during the walk.
At Bicton the group heard from Mr Peter Christie (father of the 2010 College Captain, Peter Christie
jnr) about his “journey” with his son and on the importance of enjoying quality time together. On
returning to Point Walter the group then heard from his son Peter, who spoke about his journey with
his dad and offered some useful advice to the boys about listening to the wisdom and experience
of their dads. These were powerful speeches by the Christies and were well received by everyone.
A special moment was then shared between each father and their son/s as affirmations were given.
The morning concluded with a sausage sizzle that allowed many dads to get to know each other
and many boys enjoyed some time kicking a football together.
A special thanks to the Year 12 boys who helped out on the day. They gave the new dads an insight
into what they may see in their own boys when they reach Year 12 at CBC Fremantle.
Below is the prayer written by Joshua Loveridge and Michael Messineo, current Year 12 boys.
Michael said the prayer on Sunday morning.
In John 5:19-20 Jesus says “Because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For
the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does”
Heavenly Father,
Bless these Fathers and sons here today so that they
may continue to connect on a deeper level and truly
“Share the Journey” not only today but throughout their
lives. Bless them so that they understand, watch over and
take the time to strengthen their relationship.
We ask this through Christ our Lord,
Amen.
The Australian Rowing Championships were held in Perth this year and current CBC boys and
previous students participated representing the school and Fremantle Rowing Club. Freo saw the
largest representation of any Western Australian club and scored a medal tally of five Gold, seven
Silver and six Bronze. Previous students Mario LoPresti and Max Armstrong won gold in the Under
23 Mens’ Lightweight Four, Silver in the Interstate Mens’ Youth Eight and not yet satisfied with this,
Bronze in the Open Mens’ Lightweight Eight.
This displays how rowing at CBC has progressed. CBC boys have now become Australian Champions.
Tom White, Conor Noonan, Solomon Holliday, Willis Armstrong, Doug McDonald and Luke
Thompson also contested the Nationals and represented the school at the schoolboy quads and
Under 17 quads achieving representation in the finals. The boys have been training hard for six
sessions a week without missing a beat for the previous six months. They had their first taste of
competing in 2000 metre racing before the regatta and beat all the PSA school first quads’ times by
two seconds. Brian Tonkin, the Rowing Master at Aquinas College phoned our senior coach, Chris
Holliday and commented on how sharp the boys presented and complimented them on how well
they had done.
Colin Armstrong, parent of Max and Willis organised the Fremantle team as overall Manager. A
fantastic job on behalf of our forty five competing athletes. Parents are very welcome to participate
along with their sons at the club- a fantastic family atmosphere!
New Intake of Boys for 2012
Boys interested in trying out rowing should contact Mr McGrath now as training will commence
shortly. You need no previous experience but must be prepared to get fit and attend training
regularly. You must be able to swim.
Year Nine boys will start soon so contact Mr McGrath to express interest asap.
Term 2 begins with a number of different inter-school teams starting their trials and competitions.
Champion schools trials:
• Year 7 and 8/9 soccer and senior soccer, Years 7, 8/9, 10 and First XVIII football, rugby,
hockey and surfing/body boarding. Boys need to remember to check the sports noticeboard
for staff coaches involved and listen to morning bulletin notices for meetings and trial days.
• Rugby: will continue training and begin after school competition on Wednesdays for 9s and
Tuesdays for First XV.
• Rowing: training for boys interested from Years 9 - 12 plus Saturdays with weekend regattas.
• Lightning carnivals: all boys in the following year groups will participate. Year 9s – Monday,
7 May and Year 7/8s on Wednesday, 9 May.
• ACC cross country: State All Schools Friday, 25 May with ACC Carnival on Thursday, 31 May.

squad 2012
• House sport: Continues through Terms 2 and 3 for Years 7 – 10.
• House athletics carnival at the State Athletics Centre on Friday, 29 June. Pre-carnival events
will occur during House sport leading up to this day
Students are reminded for Sport and PE to:
• Wear predominately white jogging/running shoes only for PE and Sport. The wearing of flatsoled
shoes is not allowed (eg. Nike Air Max and 5.0) for safety reasons because the grass is
wet in winter.
• Boys must wear sport shirt and shorts under track suits. Boys will not be permitted to wear
tracksuits during sport; they are to be kept dry for class and travelling home from school.
• Rain and wind will not stop sport from continuing unless there is lightning. A towel is
recommended for boys to help themselves dry after sport.
• Injured students: must bring a note and stay for sport where they will help with umpiring or
scoring, and should be wearing their grey uniform.
Mr Brendan McGrath
Head of Sport
The Cross Country team have been training hard during Term One and the boys are beginning to
look really fit as they endeavour to reclaim the ACC boys aggregate title. This year the boys have
been training at a variety of venues running between 6km to 10km a session. I have been impressed
with the turn-out at training especially from our young brigade of Years 7 and 8 who have brought
some extra enthusiasm to training and who have been matching it with the big guns in Years 11
and 12.
With many families going away during the Easter break there will be no training over the school
holidays this year, however it is still important that the boys go for a couple of runs each week of
at least 5km over the holidays. I ask that parents please encourage boys to do some of their own
training as we would hate to see all the hard work the boys have put in this term go to waste with
the boys losing their fitness over the relaxing holiday break.
On Edmund Rice Day (Friday, 4 May) the boys will once again be competing in the Murray Mile in
front of the whole school. This is a great chance to showcase the great talent in the squad as well
as give the boys some competition practice. The boys will be competing for their House and for
Wedd Cup points. There is also the opportunity to win some great individual prizes for winning their
respective age groups.
Training recommences on Thursday, 26 April next term and I expect all boys to attend. Trainings will
continue to be held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 6:50am and I remind all boys and parents
that all trainings are compulsory and all boys must attend unless they have a note with a valid
reason why they could not. If your son cannot attend, a letter must be given to me before Mentor
that morning or an email needs to be sent to adrianc@cbcfremantle.wa.edu.au
There are some exciting times ahead for the Cross Country Squad and I am looking forward to next
term with great anticipation.
Last week CBC entered two teams in the State Schools Teams Tennis Competition.
Team 1 Simon Smith Team 2 Jakeb Waddell
Austin Main Michael Messineo
Lucas Annese Connor Orrells
Joshua Terranova Daniel Lenzo
Alessandro Lo Presti
The two teams were placed into Pools and played against four other schools at Belmont Tennis Club
for places in the finals.
Jakeb’s team won all four matches and
advanced to the Slazenger Cup final at The
State Tennis Centre. Here they were pitted
against Applecross High School, which is
the premier tennis school in the State. They
were competitive, but succumbed to the
four State tennis players in the team.
Simon’s team won three matches in the pool
and then lost to Applecross in a very close
encounter.
They advanced to the finals of the Mursell
Shield and had to play another Applecross
team.
Simon was leading, but fell and injured his
ankle, so had to forfeit. They eventually lost
after some tough matches.
Congratulations to all boys concerned for their tireless efforts on a day that started at 7.15am and
finished at 5pm.
years 8 and 9 tennis
Years 8 and 9 also played tennis in the last week. The third team, ably led by Jackson Sidery, with
Michael Norman, Lachlan Lavery, Ben Pendergast and Cameron De Luca lost in the round robin
stages, although they did win a match and gave their best.
Second team: Alec Radonich (Capt), Will Power, Jacob Toomath, Ambrose Ryan and Ryan Pace, did
superbly to finish second in their group and qualify for the division 2 play offs. They were then
narrowly beaten in the first match at this stage, but did very well to get this far.
First team: Jordan Filippin (Capt), Anthony Lomma, Tyler Sorrell,
Dylan Smith and Nathan Prendegast: despite some very close
games against tough opponents the team won 3 of 4 matches to get
through the group stage to div 2 play offs. Here they won 2 rounds
to make it to the final where we had to play Perth Modern, the
same team who beat them at this stage last year, and unfortunately
they were too strong again. Although I am trying not to count, I
think this is the 3rd year in a row we have been runner up at this
event and possibly 5th time in the 8 or so years I’ve been helping.
However, when you consider how many schools enter, this has
been a very good achievement.
It was a long day for the top team, we left CBC at 730am and finished about
8pm. A special mention to Tyler Sorrell who didn’t lose a singles match all
day and Jordan Filippin who, when asked if he wanted to stop his doubles
match in the final when the overall score meant we couldn’t win, replied
‘nope we never quit!’ and carried on for another 10mins before accepting
defeat.
As I think I comment every
year, it’s always great to
see our boys playing in
such a sporting manner
and I look forward to
our participation in this
competition next year.
MUMS RAISING BOYS
However well-prepared mothers are logically, the emotional response to having a boy is
often still, “Wow! This is unknown territory”. It is true that for many mothers, the idea of
raising a son carries its own set of worries.
As the primary female role model in a boy’s life, mothers play an important role in the development
of their son’s identity including their ability to be nurturing. This in turn affects how they relate to
others, particularly to girls and women.
This workshop will discuss:
• the importance of the mother-son relationship
• what boys need from their mums
• practical ways to improve and maintain a positive and rewarding relationship.
expression of Interest
The Parent Council is offering the workshop in mid August of this year for $10. Places are limited
and the workshop will run for approximately 2 ½ hours.
Please email: parentcouncil@cbcfremantle.wa.edu.au to secure a place. Please also indicate
your preferred timeslot of either 6pm or 6.30pm start. The College is supporting the evening
by subsidising the workshop and at $10, this is exceptional value for a workshop conducted by
As Marcel Proust, a late 19th century novelist, wrote: “the real voyage of discovery consists not
in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes”. Host an international high school student in
