A Busy Week
On Wednesday of last week the College Visual Art Exhibition was opened
in the presence of a large and appreciative audience. Our thanks are
extended to Dr Toby Bell, a local artist, who officially opened the exhibition
and provided an interesting perspective on the relationship between art and
science. Congratulations to Mr Shane Mancuso, Ms Anne McCaughey and
Ms Zoe Francis for their encouragement of our young artists and for their
hard work in presenting the exhibition. Many students received awards on
the evening and it was pleasing to see the quality and diversity of their art
pieces.
On Friday evening the College conducted the Graduation Mass and
Ceremony for the Class of 2012. Some students provided reflections on their
time at CBC as part of the ceremony and these were certainly a highlight of
the evening. In a sign of great maturity these boys were able to look back on
their experiences at school and discern those which were most powerful and
pertinent to their formation as good young men. Thank you to Father Tony
Maher for his inspiring homily at the mass and for his ongoing commitment
to fostering the relationship between St Patrick’s parish and CBC Fremantle.
To complete the weekend, our College Awards Night on Sunday was
particularly well attended and provided the opportunity for over three hundred
students to be publicly acknowledged for their achievements during this
year. Congratulations to all of the boys who received subject awards on the
evening. Being the top performing student in a subject is a special honour
and indicates outstanding ability and commitment. Some boys received
multiple awards in this category and were appropriately recognised. These
particular boys are now challenged to maintain this standard and to set the
academic tone for the College in the future.
An even larger group of boys were awarded Certificates of Merit during the
ceremony. These awards are available to all students regardless of innate
ability and are truly reflective of the emphasis upon personal excellence
promoted at CBC Fremantle. The criterion for these certificates is a minimum
of 85% positive indicators on each of the first three school reports issued
during the year. While this standard is very high it is achievable for each
boy. The broad cross-section of students receiving this award reinforces
the place of clearly defined criteria and targets in the effective education of
young men.
The Rite Journey
I’m sure that all families have been able to follow the progress of our new
Year 9 program, The Rite Journey, through the regular updates which have
been provided in this newsletter throughout the year. Next week marks one
of the major activities associated with this program when all boys will spend
some time camping in Bindoon. We wish all of the students and staff involved
a safe and enjoyable time away.
In our Prayers
All members of our CBC Fremantle community are invited to keep Mr Ben
Foley and his family in their thoughts and prayers during the coming months.
Mr Foley has been diagnosed with a serious illness and will not be returning
to teach his classes for the rest of this year. Ben has expressed his gratitude
for the good wishes he has already received from our community and I have
assured him of our ongoing support.
Visual Arts
Exhibition
Wednesday, 24 October saw
the opening of CBC Fremantle’s
Annual Visual Arts Exhibition. The
doors opened at 7pm with a flow
of people entering and inspired by
the magnificent display of work
from Years 7 to 12 students.
Special guest, Mr. Toby Bell
officially opened the exhibition.
Toby is a Fremantle based
figurative sculptor and painter
who is also a GP. He works using
traditional techniques in
bronze, acrylics, oils and in
contemporary materials. Toby
has exhibited both nationally
and internationally. In 2010
he was the winner of the City
of Swan Sculpture Prize and
produced a large scale work
names Caliban, which was
created for Sculpture by the
Sea 2012, and explores the
passion and power of male and female
energy present within each individual. It
was wonderful to see Mrs Zoe Francis in
attendance with her family and we wish
her well during her maternity leave.
Matthew Brown was awarded the
Principal’s Award and a total of 53 students
were awarded Excellence Awards for their
commitment and development within the Art department throughout
the year.
A huge thank you goes to the Parent Council members; each year they take the
time to prepare and set up the food and drinks; Mr Tony Pitos; Mrs Fiona Williams and
Mr Shane Mancuso. Lastly thank you to all the families, friends and staff for attending the
opening night. The boys get a real buzz seeing their work on display and we appreciate your
information Communication technology
ICT at the College is allowing the students to display their talents in many ways. With the implementation of the laptops
and the world class software packages throughout the school, we are seeing some amazing work produced across all
learning areas. Within the Computing electives, we are honing the boys’ skills to assist them in being creative, engaged
learners across all their subjects. Some examples of what areas the boys will explore in computing this term are outlined
below.
Our Year 8 boys are putting the final touches on their Short Films in preparation for the judging of the best film during
Week 5. The theme for the movie is “The Sign”. The boys have to make a two minute film using their Adobe software and
then present their films to the wider school community during a selected lunchtime. The College population will judge the
best film and prizes will be awarded to the winning film makers.
The Year 9 students are currently investigating electronic publications and will be producing an interactive publication of
their own later this term. The task will involve the integration of text, graphics and video into an on-line publication. The
software they are using (In-Design) is an industry standard package that is used to produce many publications across
all types of media in the commercial space.
Using the latest Adobe Suite of products, the boys are currently developing their own “Apps” for mobile devices.
Beginning with a simple golf game, students will progress to drawing packages and their own custom Apps. They will be
able to upload these to their mobile devices at the conclusion of the term.
Year 8 retreat
On Tuesday, 23 October the Year Eight cohort embarked on their retreat to East
Fremantle Football Oval. The aim and purpose of this day was to allow the students
to express themselves as well as gain a wealth of knowledge on virtues associated
with CBC. Some of the day was spent in small discussion groups of ten or eleven
led by the Year Eleven Prefects. These prefects were particularly useful as it
enabled the younger students to interact with others who had experienced the same
situations that the Year Eights were facing. Some of the virtues that were placed
under importance were those of courage, confidence, tolerance, honesty, reliability,
determination, perseverance, self-discipline and respect. For each of these topics, a
talk was prepared by a prefect and delivered to the whole Year Eight cohort. These
were incredible moments when the young students fell absolutely silent and looked
to their older peers for guidance and help. After some footy on the oval, the day
was brought to an end with each student writing a positive affirmation to every other
individual in their group. This was a very proud moment to witness as students
offered their encouraging comments to one another. As a whole, the day was a
great success with no doubt in the minds of those that run the program, that every
young gentleman had left the retreat with a greater knowledge of virtues or a new
found way of expressing themselves. Each young Year Eight student made a firm
commitment to work on one virtue during Term 4. Father Tony Maher ran a healing
service and anointed each student with holy oil as a sign of their commitment into
the future.
John Hayes Yr 11 House Prefect
Special thanks go to the following Year 11 boys for their diligent preparation and
commitment to the retreat. I congratulate each of these boys for their enthusiasm
and the sharing of their virtues with the Year 8 boys. Riley Howell, Tim Arnott,
Year 10 retreat
On Thursday 25 October, 55 Year Ten students embarked on their retreat at the East Fremantle Function Centre. The
retreat was coordinated by the Salvation Army Community and Schools Development Section. The aim and purpose
of this day was to raise the level of awareness of drug and alcohol issues in a program promoted as “beyond the
Classroom”. A youthful team from the Salvation Army engaged our boys with confronting facts in an educational and
forceful manner. Videos relevant to the issues were well received and discussion was plentiful. One very challenging
session involved the real life “confessions” of a reformed drug and alcohol addict. This very sobering and genuine talk
by a very remarkable young man who was prepared to share his story with us was a highlight of the retreat. The boys
appeared to embrace the day and speakers, the ice-breakers at the beginning and the many activities which kept the
boys focused throughout the day. It is hoped that an awareness of the issues surrounding drug and alcohol addiction
that cause so much grief and sadness in our community was heightened.
Year 11 river Cruise
Many of the Year 11 boys are eagerly anticipating the Year 11 River Cruise which will be held on Tuesday, 13 November.
The boys have invited their own partners and will no doubt be looking forward to the evening. Many of the College staff
have kindly offered to attend and help with supervision.
The students will cruise on the Captain Cook Cruises - MV James Stirling. Drop off and pick up will be from the Barrack
Street Jetty, Perth. Students should aim to arrive around 7pm to ensure that the cruise is able to commence on time at
7:15pm. The cruise will finish at 10:30pm sharp and all students are expected to be met by their parents. There will be
an opportunity for the students to purchase some light snacks (cool drinks, chips, etc.) on board. The boys are reminded
that the dress for the evening is semi-formal - they will be required to wear dress pants (NOT jeans) and a collared shirt.
It is hoped that the River Cruise will continue to be a special event for future Year 11s and it is expected that all students
will respect the College’s high expectations on the evening.
