Happy Holidays and best wishes in the New Year from all of us at Peggy Adams
Animal Rescue League! I’d like you to take another look at the dog on the cover
of this issue of The Shaggy Sheet. Yes, she’s extremely adorable, but that’s not
the only reason we chose her to be on the cover.
You see, Chloe is one of the 1,048 animals (453 cats and 593 dogs) we
transferred this year from Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control.
While at Peggy Adams, she was diagnosed with luxating patellas (or bad knees
to you and me) and through our Olivia’s Fund, she was able to have surgery.
As part of her recovery process, she is working hard to get in shape as we all
are excited to announce Chloe as our 2019 Walk for the Animals Mascot!
Thanks to the support of so many caring people in our community, 2018 has
been a year of hope for animals like Chloe and new beginnings for more than
5,000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens who have been adopted into new, loving
homes. On page 7, you’ll read a heartwarming update regarding Luke who
was adopted at our Countdown 2 Zero Adoption Event after being with us for
838 days!
And we are so enthusiastic about 2019! Soon, Peggy Adams will break ground
on our NEW Pet Adoption Center. This new building will enable us to save
twice as many animals. Please see pages 13-20 for more information and please
consider supporting our building campaign.
I hope you enjoy reading this edition of our Shaggy Sheet. We had so much to

Let’s start by addressing the questions burning in
everyone’s mind. Who really is this striking beauty on
the cover of this Shaggy Sheet? What has propelled
her through life? What does it mean to be Chloe?
“Well, even the brightest stars
can have humble beginnings.
And indeed, my beginnings
weren’t too different than
any other shelter pet’s. One
day, I was living my life…
and then…”
“BAM! Everything changed!
I was in Palm Beach County
Animal Care and Control.
A place where no budding pup
wants to find themselves. I longed
for a family. What’s the point of being so
fabulous without anyone to share it with? No one to
bask? Worst of all, my knees! Oh, my poor knees! I
had been diagnosed with luxating patellas, or for you
more creative types, floating kneecaps!”
“My kneecaps! Were floating! How horrible!”
“Then, I was transferred to Peggy Adams Animal
Rescue League. Another shelter. Do you think shelter
life suits a personality like me? Let me just tell you
now, no! It doesn’t! I need personalized care and

Nonprofits First AWARD
On Tuesday, October 2nd, Nonprofits First
hosted their 2nd Annual Hats Off Awards at
the Harriett Himmel Theater. This program
honors individuals and organizations in Palm
Beach County for their excellence in service
to others.
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League was
nominated for Non-Profit of the Year (budget

Peggy’s Pantry and the Bank of Belle Glade
Help Local Pet Owners During Food Drive
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is partnering
with the Bank of Belle Glade to help local pets in need
through Peggy’s Pantry to bridge the gap for so many
in the community who are struggling to feed their
beloved pets.
For those wishing to help, pet item donations can
be dropped off at the Bank of Belle Glade (located at
108 SE Ave. D, Belle Glade, FL 33340) during bank
hours (Monday-Thursday 9am to 3pm, Friday 9am to
5:30pm). Donated items are distributed at the Bank of
Belle Glade on Wednesdays from 9am to 1pm.
Donated items that are needed include: wet, canned
dog food; wet, canned
cat food; cat carriers; cat
litter; food bowls; cat and

Peggy’s Pantry assists families located in Palm Beach
County care for their pets. We offer low-cost vaccines
and spay/neuter surgeries for pet owners. Peggy
Adams’ goal is to keep families and their pets together
and out of the shelter. We recognize the important
bond between people and animals and we believe this
bond should not be broken or torn apart due to
financial setbacks.

Luke – the sweet dog pictured here – is a perfect
example. For nearly 2 ½ years, we gave him the
shelter, food, medical care – and love – that he
needed and deserved. And at our Countdown 2 Zero
Adoption Event – 838 days after he first came through
our doors – Luke was adopted by a wonderful family!

Bark Back Benefit IV

The 4th Annual Bark Back Benefit music festival
took place on November 17, 2018. Local favorite band,
Spred the Dub, along with chairwoman Jacque Batcha
started the event in memory of Jacque’s two beloved
dogs, Nesta and Etta, who had recently passed away.
Jacque decided to turn the sadness from her loss into
something positive for local animals in need and, with
the help of her son (and lead singer of Spred the Dub)
Mick Swigert and several friends, the first Bark Back
Benefit came into fruition.
Each year the music festival continues to grow. This
year’s event, held at Mathews Brewing Company in
Lake Worth, featured 9 bands, several DJs, and an
amazing silent auction. A limited-edition beer was
created by Mathews Brewing Company in honor of
the event and $1 from each can sold was donated to
Peggy Adams. The First Responders Walk the Runway
returned this year with 10 local firefighters and
police officers from Palm
Beach County Fire Rescue
and Boynton Beach Police

We want to send a big thank you to Jacque Batcha,
Mick Swigert, and the rest of the committee as well as
all the awesome performers, and the emcees Patrick

Mathews Brewing Company for hosting the event and
donating a portion of their sales from the night.

The old tradition of a New Year’s resolution… The end of the year…
That big night we make a commitment to be better in the upcoming year!!!
Traditionally, we strive to
accomplish a goal and improve our
life. In 2019, why don’t we make a New
Year’s resolution for our pets?
Resolve to get involved in animal welfare… Save lives,
Adopt, Foster, Donate, and Volunteer!
The top resolutions I would make
with my pet are the following:
1 Foster
The number one way to save a shelter pet’s life
other than adoption is to foster. You will provide
a temporary living arrangement without the
commitment of ownership. This year, we had over
400 fosters who saved the lives of 2,704 animals in
our shelter.
2 Resolve to watch your weight and your pets too!
Commit to a healthy diet and exercise routine (it will
benefit you both). *Always consult with your veterinarian and
doctor before starting any diet & exercise program.
DIET: Obesity is at an epidemic state for our pets.
50% of pets are classified as obese or overweight.
Incorporating a new diet along with an exercise
routine is an easy goal for 2019.
Start with an appropriate food for the age of your
pet (puppy, young adult, senior etc.).
Feed them twice a day to allow proper
metabolism to work.
Measure the correct amount as directed by the
goal weight.
You can add carrots and broccoli for healthy treats.
EXERCISE: A good diet goes hand in hand or “paw in
paw” with a sound exercise routine. In 2019, aim for a
new activity with your pet…
Meet up with friends with their pets which
encourages positive socialization for all.
Have fun at the local dog park. After a fun play
date, a tired pet is a happy pet!
Walking is great for people and animals alike,
because it’s easy on the joints.
A small amount of aerobic activity goes a long way
regarding the health benefits provided.
Living in South Florida, we can take our pets
outside and enjoy swimming, paddle boarding,
and kayaking (with a pet approved life jacket
of course).
3 Good oral hygiene will encourage you to smile.
The act of smiling activates the feel-good
neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin, and
endorphins). When you feel good about your teeth –
you smile.
Let’s commit to better oral hygiene for our pets.
Some 80% of shelter animals have some form of
dental disease when they came in (which is 100%
preventable). In 2019, start brushing your pet’s teeth
using an appropriate dog/cat toothpaste. Use dental
chews and schedule routine cleanings with your
veterinarian.
4 Quality time and mental enrichment –
Spend quality time with your four-legged kids. Our
pets are natural stress relievers. We all live busy, selfconsumed
lives with chaotic schedules. Let’s take time
to enjoy our pet. Research shows, by spending time
with pets your cortisol levels decrease, and oxytocin
increases. This is a very good thing.
The best part is that the SAME thing happens to your
pets’ levels!
We can also incorporate puzzle feeders, K-9 agility
and teaching your dog new tricks (even the old dogs)
– this will increase cognitive function and stimulate
healthy brain activity.
How cool is that! We really do make each other
feel good.
Bottom line for 2019 – MAKE A Resolution to do
ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

HEALTHY DIET & EXERCISE FOR YOU AND YOUR PET
BRUSH YOUR PET’S TEETH

PROJECT CATSNIP / Kitten Nursery
Peggy Adams
launched its Trap-
Neuter-Vaccinate-Return
(TNVR) program in 2010.
Since then, the League has
spayed/neutered, vaccinated,
microchipped and tipped the left ear
of over 35,153 community cats (as of 11/28/18). In
fact, in mid-November, Peggy Adams reached 4,000
in 2018 alone!
Of the cats receiving TNVR services, 18,853 were
female cats. It is estimated that one female cat can
produce 100 kittens in her lifetime. Had these
female cats not been spayed, they could have
produced as many as 1,885,300 kittens (that is just
first-generation). If 25% of the kittens survived to
adulthood and half were female (23,566,250), the
second-generation total
could have been as many as
23.5 million kittens.

able to expand our
TNVR program and
make great progress
towards reaching our
goal of making Palm
Beach County a “no-kill”
community by 2024.

Peggy Adams is Saving Hundreds of Lives Thanks to Neonatal Kitten Nursery
Peggy Adams opened its Neonatal Kitten Nursery in
2016 in a revolutionary approach to saving the lives
of newborn kittens requiring 24-hour care to survive.
In 2017, the League expanded the Kitten Nursery
to accommodate even more kittens in Palm Beach
County needing life-saving care. In 2018, the Kitten
Nursery was thriving, resulting in our admitting over
588 kittens into the program.
Scooby
A recent Kitten Nursery graduate, named Scooby, was
brought to Peggy Adams as a stray single kitten when
he was just two days old. He was hand raised in the
Kitten Nursery for the first six weeks of his life or he
would not have survived. Because of the community’s
support, Scooby was recently adopted into a loving
home. Peggy Adam’s goal is for more cats and kittens
like Scooby to find their forever families.

illustrating the special bond between animals and their families.

anyone making an attempt to better society is

hopes someday to be a foster volunteer and then a
full-fledged volunteer when she turns 17.
Special thanks to Meghan, the Help for Hope Club,
Violet and to ALL our amazing young philanthropists!
Recently Meghan and her club “Help for Hope” ran a
fundraiser at Suncoast High School. They aim to hold
volunteer events throughout the year and to organize
fundraisers and donation drives for local charities.
This was the first time they chose an animal rescue
and donated close to $350 to Peggy Adams.

A Taxing Question: Would you benefit from an IRA rollover gift in 2018?
Donors are allowed by Congress to make a tax-free
gift to a qualified charitable organization from their
IRA, known as the IRA charitable rollover.
Donors age 70 ½ or older are eligible to move up to
$100,000 from their IRAs directly to qualified charities
without having to pay income taxes on the money.
Here are the details of the legislation:
• The donor must be 70½ or older on the day of
the gift.
• The donor transfers up to $100,000 directly from the

donor’s IRA to one or more qualified charities. This
opportunity applies only to IRAs and not other types
of retirement plans.
• The donor pays no income taxes on the gift. The
transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax
deduction, so the donor benefits even if the donor
does not itemize tax deductions.
• The gift can satisfy all or part of the required
minimum distribution for the year.
• The donor does not receive any goods or services
in return for the rollover gift in order to qualify or
tax-free treatment.

IRA charitable rollover would be appropriate for you.

Fashion Show Thanks Adoption Center Donors
More than 90 guests of Ann and Charles Johnson
were treated to a special fashion show on
November 13, 2018, featuring five adoptable
dogs from Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League,
accompanied by the League’s veterinary team who
modeled fashions from Worth Avenue’s Leggiadro
Boutique. Animal fashions were provided by Pucci &
Catana Pet Boutique in Jupiter and Woofgang Bakery
& Grooming in Palm Beach.
Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of
Peggy Adams, thanked the Johnsons and their guests,
many of whom have contributed to the new Pet
Adoption Center being built at the League’s West
Palm Beach campus, showing a video of construction
anticipated to begin in early Spring 2019.

The Center will double the number of lives saved
when it opens in 2020.
After the runway show, Anderson invited the
guests to visit with the five veterinarians on staff at
Peggy Adams. These doctors perform more than
14,000 spay/neuter surgeries a year at the League
while serving more than 10,000 dogs and cats in our
public Wellness Clinic and more than 7,000 animals
receiving shelter care until they
are placed in new, loving homes.
“These are remarkably talented doctors, dedicating
their lives to the animals of our community,”
Anderson remarked. “And Ann and Charles Johnson
have been remarkably dedicated contributors to the
life-saving work being done each day, every day at
Peggy Adams. We are grateful beyond measure.”

Ball on December 6,
at the Sailfish Club in
Palm Beach was another
sold-out event. This elegant,
black-tie holiday affair supported
the mission of saving the lives of homeless, neglected
and injured dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Pauline
Pitt, a devoted League supporter and board member,
enthusiastically served once again as Chairwoman.
This enchanted evening filled with holiday lights,
garlands, festive Christmas trees and decorations,
began with a receiving line of adorable, adoptable pets
greeting guests with tails a-wagging as they arrived on
the red carpet. Guests enjoyed cocktails, dinner and
live entertainment, and viewed renderings of Peggy
Adams Animal Rescue Leagues’ highly anticipated
campus expansion expected to break ground in
Spring 2019. Later in the evening, the dogs and kittens
paraded through the party for the guests to get a
second look. This parade
of precious pets resulted
in five of the six animals
finding their new loving
forever homes – a new
Christmas Ball record!
“We are very appreciative
for the support of so many
who help the animals at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue
League,” said Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO
of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. “Our guests
at the Christmas Ball are speaking for those without
a voice and there’s nothing more special than that
during the holiday season.”
All the funds raised from this event, support the
life-saving mission, programs and services at Peggy
Adams. The League is expected to provide services
to over 30,000 in the community in 2018 including
pet adoption, spay and neuter services, Trap-Neuter-
Vaccinate-Return program, wellness clinic, pet lost &
found, and the Peggy’s Pantry pet food bank.

Why Adopt?
Thinking of adding a pet to your family?
Here are some top reasons to adopt your new best friend.
1. Because you’ll save a life.
Each year, 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats
are euthanized in the United States, simply
because too many pets come into shelters and too
few people consider adoption when looking for a
pet. The number of euthanized animals could be
reduced dramatically if more people adopted pets
instead of buying them. When you adopt, you save
a loving animal by making them part of your
family and open shelter space for another animal
who might desperately need it.
2. Because you’ll get a great animal.
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is brimming
with happy, healthy pets just waiting for someone
to take them home. Most shelter pets end up
here because of a human problem like a move,
a divorce, getting lost in the community, not
because the animals did anything wrong. Many
are already house-trained and used to living
with families.

Not only do animals give you unconditional love,
but they have been shown to be psychologically,
emotionally and physically beneficial to their
companions. Caring for a pet can provide a sense

Overburdened shelters across the United States
take in millions of stray, abused and lost animals

Have you ever wanted to add a pet to your family, but you just
couldn’t? If you are someone who wants to “watch over” the canine
and feline residents in our dog and cat adoption centers, in a way that
hovers above the rest, then please become one of our Guardian Angels.
A Guardian Angel funds the care of our resident cats or dogs in a
specific condo or kennel. Thus, during your year as a Guardian Angel,
you’ll be helping a number of pets as they await their forever home.
Your status will be recognized with a card on your sponsored condo
or kennel naming you, your family, or your business as that pet’s
Guardian Angel. You’ll also receive a certificate and a special angel pin.
Anyone who visits the shelter will be reminded of your generosity.
The average cost of care for a dog or cat in our program is $19 a day
and the average length of stay with us is 30 days.
