Thank you for making last year an incredible lifesaving success for the animals. Because 

of friends like you, thousands of animals are getting a second chance at the happiness 

they deserve. 

On the back cover of this edition of The Shaggy Sheet, you’ll read how we made a difference 

in our community in 2023. Over 35,000 animals benefited from our programs and services. 

More than 6,000 lost or homeless pets were provided temporary shelter, over 3,000 of them 

benefited from our foster program comprised of over 600 foster volunteers. More than 5,000 

pets were placed into loving homes and over 190,000 meals were provided to pets in our 

community needing assistance through our Peggy’s Pantry. 

These are just a few of the many impressive numbers we have achieved with your help. We 

also have heartwarming “Happy Tails” to share. We are grateful to those who have adopted 

or volunteered, companies and businesses that got involved, and those who donated to 

support our mission, vision, and lifesaving work.

MISSION MOMENT 

Blanca 

Five-month-old Blanca arrived at our 

shelter as a stray with no microchip. 

Soon after arriving, our staff noticed 

Blanca having issues with her bladder 

that needed immediate attention. She 

was born with bilateral ectopic ureters, 

causing incontinence, and putting her 

at major risk for urinary tract infections. 

We knew that without corrective 

surgery, she would have no chance 

for adoption or a normal life. 

Thanks to our Olivia’s Fund we were 

able to bring in a board-specialized 

veterinary surgeon to perform ureter 

surgery on Blanca. The surgery 

improved her condition greatly and 

although her leaky bladder remained, 

it became much more manageable. 

Soon after surgery, Blanca went into 

foster care for a month to help her 

healing process. As she healed, her 

sweet and playful personality began 

to shine through and a few months 

later Blanca was adopted into her new 

loving, forever home!

CINDY & PAT 

Surgery Suite Volunteers 

The phenomenal success of our spay and neuter clinic 

for owned pets, shelter pets, and community cats 

reflects the ever-increasing dedication and enthusiasm that 

our volunteers display here at Peggy Adams. 

Volunteers are the heartbeat of our organization, and it shows in the amount of 

time they selflessly donate to us. With over 12,243 surgeries performed 

in 2023, our Surgical Suite volunteers are the perfect example of a solid 

and self-driven team! Pat Deavers works hard coordinating the process of 

cleaning and sterilizing surgical instruments as our Chief Sterilization volunteer. 

Cindy Adams makes sure our team of volunteers provide the best quality of 

care to our patients as the Chief Post-Surgical Recovery volunteer. Both Pat and 

Cindy help our staff by training new volunteers, ensuring the well-being of the 

animals and keeping everything running smoothly, thanks to their commitment 

and dedication to their role. Thank you Pat & Cindy!

DON’T KIT-NAP THIS KITTEN SEASON 

Kitten Season has started again in sunny South 

Florida and its likely you may come across newborn 

kittens outside. 

DON’T TOUCH THOSE KITTENS, 

their lives depend on it! 

During early spring and late fall, cats mate and give 

birth to numerous kittens. It’s this time of year where 

shelters feel added pressures as newborn kittens need 

around-the-clock care. 

The best way to help kittens when you find them outside 

is to LEAVE THEM ALONE, but keep an eye on them for 

24 hours. If the mother hasn’t returned it might be time 

for human intervention – but keep in mind, a kitten’s 

best chance of survival is to stay with its mother. 

Once kittens are two months old, they can have their 

vaccines, spay/neuter surgery, and go up for adoption. 

SAVING TINY LIVES 

BECOME A FOSTER 

Every year we call upon our community of foster volunteers 

to help us with the influx of over 500 kittens during the spring 

and summer. We provide our fosters with all the training, food, 

and medical support – we just need more people to help. This 

is an extremely rewarding and life-saving service that YOU 

could be a part of. Just take it from Janice, one of our neonatal 

foster parents who had this to say… 

Fostering neonatal kittens is full of challenges, but also 

full of fun, rewards, and gratification. The kittens can be 

anywhere from a few days to about four weeks old, and 

they need to be bottle fed kitten formula until they grow 

their teeth and can eat on their own. It is so emotional to 

see these tiny babies with their eyes still shut grow into 

adorable, playful kittens who will eventually be adopted. 

Lots of work and time is required caring for them - they 

must be fed every few hours, even overnight, but it’s worth 

it! With all this love and time caring for them, it is extra 

special to see them thrive, grow up, and eventually end up 

in their forever homes.” 

When you see 

kittens, ask yourself 

these questions: 

• Where is mama? 

• Can I see her? 

Yes? 

Leave food and 

water at a distance. 

No? 

Watch for 24 hours and, 

if needed, reach out to 

your local animal 

shelter for advice.

Layla is perfect. She loves to go on 

adventures and snuggle up after a fun walk 

around Downtown West Palm Beach. We 

will get her slimmed down to a healthy, more 

comfortable weight, but she is perfect the way 

she is. She is settling in perfectly and is so 

friendly! She is a perfect fit for our family!”

I’m happy to say that Lucy 

is the best! We can’t imagine our 

home without our ‘Lucy Goosy.’ 

She eats a ton and loves to sleep 

in the sun when she’s not running

our hearts that she was ever 

surrendered to Peggy Adams. 

We told our Lucy she never has to

GIVING COMES IN MANY WAYS 

A Donor Story 

MEET COCO, a long-time volunteer and supporter of Peggy Adams 

Animal Rescue League. She started volunteering in 2016 and has completed 

over 1,300 hours of volunteer service – including on campus activities and even 

sewing surgical caps for our medical team from home. 

Coco volunteers with our spay and neuter clinic seasonally and is a beloved 

member of our surgery team. She is dedicated to making sure each cat is 

meticulously cared for and particularly loves the TNVR cats. While volunteering 

with the surgery team, Coco’s work includes helping the cats recover after surgery 

by keeping them warm, cleaning their incisions and traps, feeding them, and 

comforting them before putting them back in their traps to go home. 

Her love of cats runs strong. In addition to farming catnip in Indiana, Coco 

spends time caring after a colony of cats at The Breakers, volunteers at Palm 

Beach Animal Care and Control, and is studying at Purdue University to become 

a certified veterinary technician – so she can help save even more cats’ lives! 

Coco and her husband Don have been ongoing contributors to Peggy Adams 

with generous support of annual operations and capital improvements over 

the years. Their support has significantly impacted the cats in our care and in 

the community. One of their most noticed gifts is a portrait of their beloved cat 

Smokie(t), whose life was saved and forever changed when he met Coco. 

Because of remarkable supporters like Coco, we were able to help over 5,000 

community cats this past year by providing spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations, 

and microchips at no cost to the community.

PEACE OF MIND 

Upon learning of a serious medical condition, Pinky’s owner 

knew she had to arrange for her pet’s care when she would no 

longer be able. She visited Peggy Adams and learned of our 

PEACE OF MIND program. 

The Peace of Mind program was initiated to do just what the 

name says – to give pet owners peace of mind, knowing that 

their beloved animals will be cared for if they should outlive 

their owner. Those enrolled can rest assured 

knowing that Peggy Adams will accept their 

pets immediately into our adoption program 

when the need arises. 

Pinky arrived at Peggy Adams in August. She 

was given a thorough medical exam and 

treatment for existing health issues. At 12 

years old, Pinky was overweight and had a 

heart murmur. Our vets placed her in intensive 

care to monitor her closely and provide the 

medical attention she needed before placing 

her in a foster home and then up her for

52 nd Annual 

CHRISTMAS BALL 

Our 52nd Annual Christmas Ball was held on December 7th at the Sailfish 

Club in Palm Beach. This elegant holiday affair supported our mission of 

saving the lives of homeless, neglected, and injured dogs, cats, puppies, 

and kittens. Pauline Pitt, a devoted Peggy Adams supporter and board 

member, once again served as Chairwoman. Christmas Carolers singing 

holiday classics welcomed nearly 300 guests who enjoyed cocktails, 

dinner, and live entertainment. This year’s event was record-breaking, 

raising over two million dollars to support the programs and services 

at Peggy Adams. 

We are so grateful to our supporters, volunteers, and Board 

of Directors that continue to help the animals at Peggy Adams 

Animal Rescue League. Those who supported this year’s 

Christmas Ball speak for those without a voice and there is 

nothing more special than that during the holiday season.”

designated solely for the Peace of Mind program, or a minimum provision of $25,000 

in your will, living trust, life insurance policy, a retirement account, or other planned 

gift vehicle that names Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League as beneficiary. With this 

minimum donation you may enroll up to three pets in the Peace of Mind program.

friend of her foster mother, who is a big

and off to live in a new loving home. 

Kathleen recently shared, “Pinky has become a 

funny, lively, and outrageously lovable addition 

to our family. She is on five meds twice a day but 

is now energetically walking half a mile each day 

with us and the other dogs. She likes to play fetch 

and digs in the toy basket for just the right toy of 

any given moment … She is living her best life now 

and totally enjoying every minute of it. We are 

blessed to have found her and to now have her in 

our lives. Thank you all for rescuing her - she is a 

treasure and a joy!”
