A Letter from
Rich Anderson
Executive Director/CEO
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
We have so many exciting things to share with you in this edition of
The Shaggy Sheet and it’s all because of YOU and your support!
Throughout these pages, you will read heartwarming stories about animals
such as Ruby. Thanks to our Olivia’s Fund, she was able to get the special
veterinary care she so desperately needed to bring her back to health.
Adopted in February, Ruby is now completely spoiled and living her best life.
We were so excited that our 21st Annual Walk for the Animals was back
in-person this year and thanks to all our supporters – this year raised the most
funds in its history! All the funds raised will benefit the animals within our
care. Thank you for making this event a great success!
And not only did this year’s Walk break records – so did our adoption
numbers! On the back cover, you will see our 2021 Year in Review.
• 6,639 pets were adopted into loving homes – The best year in our
96-year history
• 12,911 animals were fed through Peggy’s Pantry which equated to
over 171,000 pounds of food
• 12,681 spay and neuter surgeries were preformed
Caring and compassionate friends like you made all this possible and so much
more. You are truly saving lives each and every day through your support of
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. And you are part of an ever-growing
number of people who are dedicating themselves to building a more humane
community here in Palm Beach County.
DON’T KIT-NAP THIS KITTEN SEASON!
Kitten season has started again in
sunny South Florida and chances are
good that you may come across tiny
newborn kittens outside.
Don’t touch those kittens
– their lives depend on it!
They’re cute and tiny, but kitten
season is NOT cute. During early
spring to late fall, cats mate and give
birth to numerous kittens. It’s this
time of year shelters across the
nation dread.
Good Samaritans such as yourself see these kittens
and desperately want to help them. Here is the best
way to help these kittens when you see them. Watch
closely – where there is a nest of newborn kittens,
mama cat isn’t too far away. Mama most likely went to
find food for herself so she can continue to nurse her
kittens until they are able to eat on their own.
Once you see mama come back to her litter, you can
make it easy for her to find food! Set up some food
and water for her far enough away from her nest so it
does not attract predators, but she can still eat and get
back to her kittens quickly. Easy, right?
If you notice after 24 hours that mama hasn’t come
back to her kittens, this is when they MAY need
human intervention. Please know that neonate
(newborn) kittens require round-the-clock care and
animal shelters may not have enough staff/fosters to
care for these sweet newborn kittens.
When you see kittens,
ask yourself these questions:
1
2
3
Where is mama?
Can I see her? – Yes! – Leave food
and water at a distance
No? – Watch for 24 hours
You can reach out to your local
animal shelter for advice
The kittens’ best chance for survival is to stay with
their mama (mother knows best). Mama’s milk
has antibodies that help them to grow and get
strong. Mama also teaches her kittens important
survival skills.
Once the kittens are 2 pounds or 2 months old, and
they are old enough for vaccines and spay/neuter, then
they can go into an adoption program!
If you find kittens, this information and more resources are available for viewing online at
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League’s 21 st Annual Walk for the Animals
Raised Nearly $150,000 for Homeless & Neglected Animals
Approximately 800 people and their furry
companions came out for Peggy Adams Animal
Rescue League’s 21 st Annual Barry Crown Walk for the
Animals on February 19 th at the Meyer Amphitheatre
in West Palm Beach. The largest pet-friendly walk in
Palm Beach County raised nearly $150,000 for the
animals at Peggy Adams waiting to find their
forever homes.
As participants arrived, they enjoyed music, a
complimentary breakfast, a fabulous silent auction, a
variety of vendors, and a raffle area with great prizes.
Attendees and their pets participated in a one-mile
scenic walk along Flagler Drive. The event concluded
at center stage with a pet costume contest with unique
prize baskets. Categories included Best Dressed, Most
Creative, Owner/Pet Look-A-Like, and Best in Show.
Jennifer Ross of Sunny 107.9 FM along with WFTL
850AM served as the event’s emcee, along with Josie
Carbonare, reporter with WPBF 25 News.
6
This year’s Walk
mascot was Olivia.
Olivia was found
outside a home
in late 2021,
injured and
alone. She was
dirty and had a
traumatic injury
to her right leg,
leaving a bone
Olivia and
her new family
exposed. Unfortunately, the limb was injured beyond
saving; Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control
found it necessary to amputate Olivia’s right paw.
Olivia then arrived at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue
League for much-needed recovery, TLC, and
medical care.
After being cared for by the Peggy Adams team,
Olivia’s upbeat and charming personality started to
blossom and she was one of the dogs that was featured
in a Peggy Adams fundraising event. Her adopter,
Jenna, saw a photo of her before the event and
instantly fell in love. Jenna notes, “Dogs in shelters
need homes where they get a second chance at life,
families who care, and to know what it’s like to
be loved.”
(Continued on next page)

Walk Mascot
Jenna continued, “I am so grateful for everything
the rescues do, but I’m especially thankful for Peggy
Adams rescuing my girl.” Olivia and her new family
led the Walk in support of all the animals at Peggy
Adams waiting for their forever homes!
Thank you to all of our sponsors!
“As a nonprofit, Peggy Adams relies on community
support to help us provide services to more than
30,000 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens every year,”
said Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. “We are very
thankful to all of those who came out, participated
and sponsored the Walk. Because of everyone who
supported this event, we can save the lives of countless
more animals in Palm Beach County.”
Michelle Jones, Director of the Bluffs School, is
dedicated to teaching students the importance of
giving back and demonstrating that they can make
a difference. When she heard about the Walk for the
Animals, she thought this was the perfect opportunity
to get the students
involved so she
formed a team
to represent the
school. Michelle
used the resources
we provided on the
to spread the word
and decided to do a
“Loose Change for
Peggy Day”,
encouraging them
to bring in any
change from home
to be donated to the
animals at Peggy
a collection box
with photos of some
adoptable dogs and
so that they knew how
their donations were
PETS WITH BENEFITS
Peggy Adams has many wonderful adoption
programs that include many benefits! Here are
a few of them…
A Dolly’s Dream adoption
is always a reason to celebrate!
Congratulations to Charcole for
finding his
forever family!
Through no fault of his own,
Charcole has been in and out of
the shelter since 2019. We most
recently welcomed him back
when his family unfortunately lost their home. When
his new family learned that this would be Charcole’s
4 th adoption, they said, "Well, it'll be his last!"
Dolly's Dream, funded by The Levitetz Family
Foundation, is a project that encourages the adoption
of our “Square Heads” (aka Pit Bull mixes or bully
breeds). This program helps counter the unfortunate
stereotypes and myths that some people still believe
about these dogs. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue
League finds homes and new families for hundreds of
these dogs each year.
Want to learn more about Dolly’s Dream and bust
some myths about square-headed dogs? Please visit
PeggyAdams.org/Dollys-Dream Here you can see
our current Dolly’s Dream dogs and all the incentives
you will receive by adopting one.
Dolly's Dream
PETS H for H HEROES
Our Pets for Heroes program honors
those who are currently serving or have
served in the United States military by giving
them an opportunity to adopt any dog or cat at
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League with a waived
adoption fee. This program is available to military
personnel currently active, retired, or inactive.
Save a Senior! Peggy Adams
encourages the adoption of
our senior pets through our
Grey Whisker Club adoption
program. Even with all of the
benefits seniors pets bring, we
see puppies and kittens get adopted very quickly while
others can wait weeks, even months to be adopted. But
when someone adopts a Grey Whisker Club animal,
they become their savior. And, they love you forever!
Senior pets make some of the best pets!
(Senior animals are: 10 years young for cats and small
dogs up to 39 lbs. and 7 years young for dogs over 40 lbs.)
Fospice Program
Provide a loving home to a sweet cat
or dog who would like to spend the
rest of their days in a comfortable
environment. The animals within
Peggy Adams’ Fospice program have
a significant medical condition that the medical team
has determined would be best cared for in a loving
home. That way the pet can enjoy the remainder of
their life in comfort and dignity.
Peggy’s Pick
Much like an adult child, sometimes
certain dogs and cats make themselves
way too comfortable at Peggy Adams.
For the pets in this program, it’s time
for them to leave the nest and start their new lives.
Peggy Adams offers various incentives for the animals
within this program.
CORPORATE CORNER
Throughout the year, Hilton West Palm Beach hosts
a variety of donation drives for their team members
to be able to contribute, donate and give back to the
community. During this past holiday season, they
chose Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. Their
team members were so excited that they chose Peggy
Adams as many of them have pets and recognize the
need that shelters have for supplies to continue to care
for these animals until they find their fur-ever home.
Peggy Adams was chosen because its mission is close
to their animal-loving team members’ hearts. For their
team members and organization, being able to donate
and support Peggy Adams brought joy to their team
and to the animals as well!
We cannot thank enough Hilton West Palm Beach
and all the wonderful individuals, companies and
foundations that support Peggy Adams!
PEACE OF MIND
For you and
the animals you love...
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
developed the Peace of Mind program after
receiving numerous inquiries from dog and
cat owners concerned about their pets’ future
and after seeing many animals arrive at the
shelter orphaned by the loss of their owners.
With Peace of Mind, there is no delay. Your
pets are cared for at once when the need
arises.
Who will take care of us?
Upon arrival, your pets will be evaluated and placed in
a foster home supervised by Peggy Adams while they
wait to be adopted into a new loving home.
Through an estate gift of $25,000 or more, designated
solely for the Peace of Mind program, you can be
assured that your pets (up to three) will continue to
receive loving, compassionate care if they outlive you.
You’ll want to consult with your attorney and financial
advisor to customize a charitable giving vehicle that
fits your own specific situation.
For additional information and to enroll, please contact Allison Tardonia, Development Officer
A.Tardonia@PeggyAdams.org or 561-472-8849.
“The Peace of Mind program is an incredible solution and option for those that have pets and do not have
trusted friends/family that would be able or willing to take in their furry loved ones should they become
incapacitated or upon their death. I inform all my clients who have pets about the program, as it really is
such an amazing option to ensure the continued care of your pet.” – Alexander P. Gil, Esq.
HUMANE EDUCATION
Youth Impact!!!
In Service to the Animals
By Shellie J. Kalmore,
Education Manager
Some of the most enthusiastic and effective animal
advocates are children. They are always looking for
ways to feel empowered and take action. In addition,
at almost every grade level, there are volunteer or
service hour requirements.
Community service provides many important benefits
to students, including those that are social, cognitive,
and psychological. Through service, students work
with a variety of diverse people, helping develop
a sense of social awareness. They learn patience,
empathy, responsibility, and respect – all top tenants
of humane education. And, they get to feel good
about themselves as they witness, first-hand, the
positive impact they can have on their community.
All these benefits align perfectly with the vision of the
Education Department here at Peggy Adams:
Humane education is teaching people of all ages to
respect all life on the planet and feel empowered to take
action and help make the world a better place.
The Education Department recognizes that children
under the age of 16 don’t always have many
opportunities to volunteer. Therefore, we have created
some great ways for children of all ages to get involved
and be impactful. With both on-campus and
off-campus opportunities, we can provide the right
fit for service hours and awesome experiences.
On Campus
Rescue Readers
People of all ages can particpate in this exciting
program reading aloud to adoptable animals at
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. Not only are
children able to develop their reading skills and boost
self-esteem in front of a non-judgmental audience
(and earn service hours), but it also provides valuable
socialization and love to the shelter animals. To date,
nearly 800 hours of service have been provided
through this program.
PeggyAdams.org/Rescue-Readers
12 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League

HUMANE EDUCATION
Online
Virtual Reading
Kids of all ages can also practice reading skills, earn
service hours, and help animals at the same time by
participating in We’re All Ears…the virtual read to
the animals program. To date, more than 400 hours
of service, via one-on-one Zoom appointments, have
been provided through virtual reading.
PeggyAdams.org/Virtual-Reading
At Home
Making Toys
Another option is to earn service hours from home
by crafting toys for the shelter's cats and dogs. Choose
from a variety of DIY projects to complete at home
and drop off at our campus. These toys help keep our
shelter pets healthy and happy.
PeggyAdams.org/Service-Hours
Kindness Rock Garden
This project was created to lift others up through
simple acts of kindness. Our garden is outside our
Adoption Center under a beautiful palm tree. If a guest
or team member comes in and is not having a good
day, they can take one of our kindness rocks to make
them feel better. If someone has a friend that’s going
through a challenging time, they can share one of the
rocks with them. If someone is inspired by our garden,
they can help us
keep it growing by
painting rocks and
leaving them for
others. Earn 1 hour
for every five
rocks painted
and “planted”.
HAPPY TAILS
Lucy, Adopted 12/18/21
Jeep and Rangler, Adopted together on 1/21/22
“We are so happy and blessed to have both Jeep and
Rangler in our lives. They are doing wonderfully and
are beyond spoiled. They love lots of belly rubs and
evening walks. We call Jeep our grumpy man and
Rangler is our goof ball. They both bring lots of smiles
to our entire family for who they are individually and
together. Katie and Matt, with Peggy Adams, were
both wonderful to work with and we can’t thank them
enough for everything they did for us to make the
adoption process as simple as possible.”
– Janie S.
Mimi,
Adopted 10/20/21
“We adopted Mimi
She’s the tiniest dog
we’ve ever had. She
was very timid and
skittish. It’s taken
all these months to
gain her trust, but
we are getting there.
She now allows us to hold her, she’ll eat from my hand,
sleeps next to our bed, and enjoys riding in the car.
We are getting there! She’s a darling little girl. We’re so
happy she’s ours and that we can give her the safe and
pampered life she’s entitled to.” – Lisa and Don T.
“I am delighted to share an update on Lucy, formerly
known as Betty Boop. She is an utterly delightful furry
kiddo. She has truly come out of her shell, which of
course is expected, given the traumatic experience
she encountered prior to me adopting her. In spite of
this, she is absolutely thriving, enjoys being close, on
her terms of course, and loves having her chin and
ears scratched. Her favorite things to do are sleep on
her blanket, or on her back, as well as playing with
her toys, oh, and eat, of course! She doesn't let having
three legs slow her down,
especially while doing
zoomies around the
house. I love being her
mama. Thank you!”
– Kelley H.
Spooks,
Adopted 12/3/21
“When we first met
Spooks, she was so
scared and would
not come out of her
cat dome. We knew she
needed a safe place to
call home. As soon as we
brought her home, the shaking
stopped. She is the biggest snuggler and climbs into
bed at night to cuddle and smooch! She became fast
friends with our dog Magnum who we adopted from
Peggy Adams and all the other cats in the house. She
is very much loved and gets all the snuggles she needs!
We are so glad she is part of our family!” Thank you!
– Melissa C.
HAPPY TAILS
Amazing Adoption stories from our staff…
Khloe, Adopted 3/20/22
When Shelia met Khloe – a perfect match after a
long search!
“This is Sheila. She is a sweet 90-year-old lady who
was looking for a small dog for the last six months
after her dog, Lucky, passed away from cancer. During
the last six months, every time I spoke to Sheila on
the phone, she sent a handwritten thank you card
to Peggy Adams. She had adopted Lucky previously
from Peggy Adams and wanted to adopt her next dog
from Peggy Adams too. In March, she adopted a sweet
miniature poodle named Khloe! She was very thankful
to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and everyone
involved!” – Kim B.
Theo, Adopted 3/16/22
Think Theo was excited to meet his forever family?!
Theo's family fell in love when they saw his picture at
Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. They
followed his journey to Peggy Adams and asked to be
first in line to adopt him.
“Theo was a special medical case at Peggy Adams.
He arrived with upper respiratory infections, an ear
infection, a skin condition and old injuries to his front
legs. Theo needs some ongoing medical care to treat
his dermatitis
and leg injuries,
but, thanks to
his wonderful
adopters, he is
well on the way
to recovery
and the life
of pampering
he deserves.”
of hundreds of thousands of
animals and in making
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
PEGGY'S PANTRY
URGENT NEED FOR PANTRY SUPPLIES
to help the community in a time of need…
Peggy Adams is aware that some families in our community might need
assistance in feeding their beloved pets due to financial hardship. That
is why we offer help by providing essential supplies such as wet and
dry food for both cats and dogs through its Pantry. Peggy’s Pantry
is a program that helps families temporarily with feeding their
pets. The primary goal of Peggy’s Pantry is to keep pets with the
people who love them and out of shelters.
The need was so great in 2021 that Peggy's Pantry fed
over 12,900 pets. That equated to 171,645 pounds of food!
Due to overwhelming demand, all donations to our
Pantry are greatly appreciated! Simply visit our wish
list online through Amazon and Chewy to donate.
THE BETTY WHITE CHALLENGE
Thank you
for being a friend…
You may have seen the viral #BettyWhiteChallenge
on social media, a campaign that urged her fans and
animal lovers across the nation to donate to shelters
and rescues in honor of her 100 th birthday which
would have been January 17 th . Betty White was an
amazing person and huge animal activist for all
creatures great and small.
Peggy Adams participated in the challenge and we
were absolutely thrilled by the support we received
through the Betty White Challenge. We want to thank
everyone who honored Betty White, the Champion
for the Animals, by making a donation.
Over $58,000 was raised to continue our mission of
providing shelter to lost, homeless and unwanted
animals in Palm Beach. And, thanks to a generous
donor, donations made to Peggy Adams were matched
up to $10,000.
Betty White must be smiling knowing all the support
animal rescue facilities around the world received in
her honor.
GREAT CHARITY CHALLENGE
Giving thanks…
Each year, the Great Charity
Challenge supports local
nonprofit organizations
through equestrian
competition and the
distribution of more than
$1.7 million in grants.
Peggy Adams was selected
to receive a $25,000 grant
from event sponsor Evergate
Stables. These funds will be
used to support our Safety Net
program, which aims to help
families keep their pets instead
of surrendering them to a
shelter. Thank you to Evergate
Stables and the Great Charity
Challenge!
Kaitlyn Seyler and Rich Anderson accept our grant "check".
DOG DAYS OF SUMMER
Important Tips to Keep Your Pet Cool During the Dog Days of Summer!
As the summer approaches and the temperature
heats up, Peggy Adams has a few reminders and tips
to help protect your furry friends during the dog days
of summer.
It is important to remember that if it’s too hot for
you, it’s too hot for your pets. Dogs are vulnerable to
injuries and illnesses related to hot weather, including
heat exhaustion, heat stroke, sunburn, and paw pad
burns. The most dangerous condition is heat stroke,
which can cause organ failure, seizures, brain damage,
hemorrhages, blindness, convulsions, and even death.
Never leave your pet in a parked car. Not only
can it lead to fatal heat stroke, but it is also
illegal in several states…including Florida! The
temperature inside of a car can reach oven-like
temperatures in just minutes, often more than
140 degrees. That quick errand can turn into a
disaster and could be fatal for your pet.
When the temperature is high, don’t let your dog
remain on hot surfaces like asphalt and cement.
They do not have shoes like we do, and the hot
ground can cause burns on their sensitive paw
pads. Keep walks during the sunniest part of the
day to a minimum. Plan those longer walks for
sunrise or sunset.
If your dog is a breed that gets haircuts, shortening
your dog's coat for summer can help prevent
overheating. However, be careful that your
dog isn't shaved too short, as that can allow
for sunburn.
Restrict exercise when temperatures soar and be
sure that you do not use a muzzle as this will
restrict a dog's ability to pant. Dogs pant to keep
themselves cool, they do not sweat to cool
themselves down like humans do.
Many dogs enjoy a swim, splashing in a wading
pool, or a run through a sprinkler in warmer
weather, which can help bring body temperatures
down. Just be cautious at the beach, lake, or pool
as some dogs will drink large amounts of water
and make themselves vomit or cause electrolyte
imbalances that become a medical emergency.
If you suspect your dog is suffering from heat
stroke, fast action might save their life. Remove the
dog from the hot area immediately and wet your
pet with cool to room temperature water and
increase air movement around him/her with
a fan. Do not use ice or very cold water – it can
be counterproductive since cooling too quickly
can trigger other life-threatening conditions.
Allow free access to water, but don’t force the
animal to drink as they may inhale it or choke.
If you believe your pet is experiencing heat stroke,
bring your pet immediately to your veterinarian or an
emergency clinic! If you see a dog locked in a parked
car, call 911.
Another thing to remember…
As summer approaches, so do thunderstorms and
holidays that include fireworks. Be sure to keep your
pets in a safe, quiet and secure place inside the house.
One in five pets go missing after being scared by loud
noises. Also, make sure your pets are microchipped,
wear a collar with ID tag and their information is
up to date. If they are not microchipped,
Providing Emergency Care
We are thankful to have Olivia’s Fund to support
our shelter pets receiving specialist and overnight
intensive care that cannot be provided here at
Peggy Adams.
Ruby, Adopted 2/19/22
Ruby, a 15-week-old puppy, was surrendered to
Peggy Adams on Sunday, February 6th with her two
littermates because they all had parvovirus. Parvovirus
is a highly contagious disease in dogs that can cause
severe illness and even death.
All three puppies were very sick so we sent them to an
emergency clinic where they could receive intensive,
around-the-clock care. Unfortunately, over the next
few days, both of Ruby’s littermates declined rapidly
and didn’t make it.
Ruby was a fighter and she made it through. She was
nursed to health and came back to Peggy Adams a few
days later. She was spayed, vaccinated, microchipped,
and then placed into Peggy Adams’ adoption program.
On February 19th, Ruby found her loving forever
home, getting all the belly rubs she could ever ask for.
Ruby's Happy Tail
“Ruby is doing excellent. We conducted a DNA test
on her and the results were shocking. She is 50%
Chihuahua, 17% Poodle, 15% Bichon Frise and 13%
Miniature Schnauzer. She has bonded with everyone
in the family, including her new furry brother and
sister. She enjoys annoying her sister and cuddling
next to her brother after hours of play time. She
has already been on two road trips. One to our
other house in the Keys and the latest one to North
Carolina. Our family could not be happier having her
part of our life.” – Tony and April C.
and to donate, please visit
About Olivia’s Fund: Olivia came to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League after being rescued from an animal hoarder. She had
significant hip dysplasia and muscle atrophy from abuse and neglect. Olivia had also been shot with a BB gun and needed surgery
to help repair her legs. In honor of Olivia, we set up a special fund to help give a second chance to dogs and cats with medical and
behavioral issues that can be fixed with surgery, special medical treatment, or training. We decided to call it “Olivia’s Fund.”
