Letter from the Executive Director/CEO
Dear Friends of Peggy Adams,
2020 was a year of the unexpected, for sure.
Despite uncertainty and obstacles, thanks to
you we were able to benefit the lives of nearly
29,000 lost, abandoned, neglected and abused
homeless dogs and cats, puppies and kittens in
our community.

Construction of our new Pet Adoption Center was
completed in 2020, opened to the public in March
2021, and already is making a huge difference in
the quality of life for the animals and the quality
of the adoption experience for people seeking to
provide a pet with a loving home.
Our Peggy’s Pantry pet food bank saw a 22%
increase in the number of families needing
our support because of jobs lost or medical
emergencies that came about due to COVID-19.
We are grateful to be able to provide this relief.
We launched Palm Beach County’s only Humane
Education program in April 2020 and over 700
children immediately jumped in to read to the
animals via virtual story time. In all, 1775 children
and adults participated in reading, art contests
and animal enrichment workshops last year.
Thankfully, our Walk for the Animals was held
February 22 – right before the shut-down. Over
1,200 friends and their pets came out to support
this important annual event in its 19th year in 2020.
Last year, our wonderful donors, supporters,
adopters, volunteers, staff and leadership truly
rallied to meet the challenges of a most difficult
year! We appreciate your dedication and are very
grateful for your continued support of the animals.

New Pet Adoption Center

Construction was complete on the new
Lesly S. Smith Pet Adoption Center at
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League by
the end of 2020. The Center opened on
March 29, 2021 and now has the capacity to
double the number of lives rescued, enabling
Peggy Adams to save thousands more dogs,
cats, puppies, and kittens.

K reiger was rescued by a kind woman who
found him in Greenacres. His little right leg
had been severed at the elbow. He also had
a visible case of mange. After several weeks
of treatment, his injury was still not healing
and so his whole limb had to be amputated.
Laser treatments and lots of care finally got
the infection under control. The mange was
being very stubborn, however. After a month
of special lime dips, he was clear at last! And
that lovely lady who had found him injured
and suffering? She adopted him the moment
he was cleared! She literally saved him twice.

O n April 29, 2020, Peggy Adams Animal
Rescue League received an urgent call from
Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control to
rescue this sweet two-year old little girl with
one eye and with suspected chemical burns
covering most of her body.

Our veterinarians worked very hard to treat
and heal Bella’s skin over the following few
months. She had x-rays and multiple visits to a
local skin and allergy specialist. After months
of recovery, Bella has healed beautifully. We are
excited to report that Bella was adopted into a
loving home on July 21 st .

Fostered
Saving lives. That is what Volunteers do each
and every day. Without the more than 500
people who actively donate their time, energy
and expertise each year, Peggy Adams would
struggle to save even one life. And volunteer
support has never been more critical than
during this COVID-19 pandemic. While many
shelters around the country have had to limit
how many homeless animals they can help, our
volunteers have allowed Peggy Adams to keep
its doors open in order to keep saving lives. To
our volunteers – our “everyday heroes” – we
salute you!
Kitten Nursery
In early March, as the pandemic mushroomed,
Peggy Adams and shelters nationwide put
out an urgent call for people to consider
becoming Foster Volunteers. And caring
people responded in unprecedented numbers!
Since the first days of this crisis, we have been
overwhelmed by the outpouring of support
from the community. Today, more than 600
local residents are providing temporary homes
for abandoned dogs, cats, puppies and kittens.
“I have fostered over 50 dogs and ‘foster failed’
with one. He was a keeper! I’ve had everything
from Goldendoodles to Pitbulls (which are
my personal favorite) and can happily say
that fostering has become the best kind of
addiction. There is nothing better than saving
a dog, then sending them off to their forever
home and watching them flourish. I can’t
tell you how many people have said, ‘I could
never foster. I would keep them all,’ and I never
understood that. I wouldn’t want to keep them
all because then I wouldn’t have space to
foster! Opening your home and your heart to
a foster animal is an incredible experience. If
you’re thinking about taking that jump, do it.
You won’t regret it.”

The Kitten Nursery, opened in 2016, remains
the only one of its kind in South Florida.
Typically just hours old, the kittens can’t walk,
see or eat on their own. To survive, they need
24-hour care, including being fed by hand

But what about their pets? Peggy’s Pantry – our
free food pantry for people struggling to feed
their animals – has experienced a massive spike
in calls from people in need of help. Without pet
food assistance, what would happen to their
animals? Would a person need to make the
heartbreaking decision to give up their beloved
dog or cat?
Humane Education teaches people of all
ages to respect all life on the planet and feel
empowered to take action and help make the
world a better place.

Our Humane Education Program launched in
April with more than 700 children who jumped

camps, tours, workshops, and birthday parties!

Held September 26 th thru October 3 rd , the
seventh annual Countdown 2 Zero (C2Z)
Adoption Event found forever homes for 375
pets. Hosted by Peggy Adams Animal Rescue
League and Palm Beach County Animal Care &
Control, this event is typically a one-day mega
pet adoption event held at the South Florida
Fairgrounds. This year, due to COVID-19, we
went virtual! Twelve local rescues created a
“booth” in the Virtual Adoption Village that
featured their adoptable pets and provided an
easy resource for adopting. During the Kick-
Off Celebration on Saturday, September 26 th ,
adoptable pets and participating rescues were
showcase through social media posts and
Facebook Live videos.
For our last live event pre-pandemic, over 1,200 people
and their fur babies came out dressed in their finest tutus for
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League’s 19 th Annual Walk for
the Animals held on 2-22-20. Thank you to all the participants
who raised money to help save the lives of so many injured,
homeless and abandoned animals here in Palm Beach County.

in revenue, as reported above. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is an annual beneficiary of a charitable foundation trust that distributed
$2,486,354 in 2020. We extend our warmest thanks for the continued generous support of so many caring friends here in our community and
beyond. Thanks to you, we are saving lives and building a more humane Palm Beach County.
7 % Non-Profit of the Year
In March of 2018, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League launched a capital campaign to build a new Pet Adoption Center. This building,
which will allow us to potentially save twice as many animals, has been completed and opened to the Public as of March 2021. Per financial
accounting standards, donations and pledges to the capital campaign are included in Revenues from Contributions, Grants, Events & Retail,
along with revenues supporting our annual operating fund. Cumulative capital campaign funds received are reflected within the Net Assets
with Donor Restrictions.
A Joyful Reunion – A Long Time Coming!
None of the work we do is more important than reuniting lost animals with their loving
families. In 2020, we witnessed 308 joyous and tearful reunions at Peggy Adams. The most
amazing, emotional and heartwarming example of this happened on September 9 th when we
called Sasha’s dad to tell him we had found his beloved dog. He had been searching for Sasha
for six years. The beautiful photograph above of Sasha and her dad says it all.

with the opening of the Lesley S. Smith Pet Adoption Center.
