SAturday, January 26 Ipswich - The Ipswich River Watershed Association and Middleton Stream Team invite you to join them for a Winter Walk from noon to 3PM! Escape cabin fever and get outside with the Middleton Stream Team and Ipswich River. The woodland route in the wilds of Middleton will depend on snow and ice conditions so we plan to meet at Angelica’s rear parking lot, corner of Routes 114 and 62, Middleton, at 12:00. From there we’ll direct participants to the hike starting point. Children are welcome. Our events SUNDAY, January 27 Groveland - The Annual Winter Festival at Veasey Park, 201 Washington Street, Goveland, MA will be held between 1PM and 4PM. Our Winter Festivals will now be held by The Friends of Veasey Park. This year’s program will begin with the Bagnall School Chorus presenting their popular holiday repertoire between 1PM and 2PM. A program on the Eastern Coyote will run between 2PM and 3PM. This will be followed by a question and answer session. Northeast District Wildlife Biologist, Chalis Bird, from Mass Wildlife will present this engaging and educational presentation. Learn how to prevent and resolve conflicts between humans and coyotes as we explore coyote biology, behavior, habitat, natural history, and folklore. As always, refreshments will be served and admission is free. Face painting and games will be offered. Donations are welcomed. Based on local town “eccentrics” that roam the streets, Vin will share how he came up with his new release. Newburyport’s The Book Rack will be on hand to sell copies of Vin’s book. Recycle This Newspaper January 3 - 9, 019 www.TheTownCommon.com Page 5 DOCS FOR SOCKS Anna Jaques Hospital Partners with Local Podiatrists to Collect Socks for the Homeless NEWBURYPORT, MA - Newburyport Podiatrists Dr. Angela Barnes and Dr. James J. DiResta once again partnered with Anna Jaques Hospital in the “Docs for Socks” program and collected 578 pairs of new socks for people impacted by homelessness in our community. The socks were delivered to Ellie Davis at the YWCA Greater Newburyport on January 11th who will distribute the socks to the greatest area of need throughout the community. Dr. Angela Barnes believes that, “one’s general health is intrinsically linked to our foot health and protecting feet all year long is vital to our overall health. Winter in New England produces many cold days that upon overexposure to the cold and damp can result in frostbite and loss of limb for those less fortunate. Providing socks from our drive is just one of many opportunities for all of us to help.” Why socks? The answer is simple: homeless men and women who live in shelters and on the streets spend much of their time outside and are often exposed to rain, snow, ice and cold temperatures; leaving many to wear soaking wet socks and shoes for days or weeks at a time. As you can imagine, The Town Common Courtesy Photo these circumstances can result in serious infections and ailments, such as immersion foot or frostbite. The best way to prevent these types of conditions is to keep feet clean, dry, and warm. Collection boxes were hosted at Anna Jaques Hospital and the Newburyport Podiatry practice of Dr. DiResta and Dr. Barnes at 37 ½ Forrester Street Professional Building in Newburyport. Hospital employees and patients of Drs. DiResta and Barnes rallied around this program in an incredible way.
