Woman, 57, hit by boulder
listed in critical condition
Lauren Coughlin, Editor
A 57-year-old female
was in critical condition
Thursday, Jan. 17, after being
“pummeled by a large
boulder” in Malibu, according
to a social media
post from the Malibu/Lost
Hills Sheriff’s Station.
The incident, which
was called in at 9:21 a.m.,
occurred near Schueren
Road and Rambla Pacifico
Street, according to Pono
Barnes, public information
officer for the Los Angeles
County Fire Department.
The woman was transported
to a local trauma
center. No updates were
available as of press time.
On Jan. 16, a boulder
struck a car on Malibu
Canyon Road, injuring the
driver. That injury, though
it occurred during the winter
storms, was not included
in LA County’s official
incident report, which only
concerned the Woolsey
Fire burn area.
Though rain subsided on
Thursday afternoon, various
agencies reminded that
dangerous conditions can
and would persist.
“I think there’s concern
that once the rain ends,
people will think that the
danger ends, but it doesn’t
— it will go on for several
days,” said David Katz,
public information officer
and operations leader for
Malibu Search and Rescue.
Throughout the past
week’s storms, Malibu
Search and Rescue received
assistance from
search and rescue teams
from Sierra Madre, San
Dimas, Santa Clarita, Antelope
Valley and Montrose,
Katz said.
“We have had people
out 24/7 assisting with an
rescue activity — which,
thankfully, there has not
been any — traffic collisions,
looter suppression,
and basically checking areas
that are possible areas
for mudslides, debris flow
and floods,” Katz said.
