Police Reports
High-end purses, safe reportedly
stolen from under-construction home
An Apple MacBook
Pro laptop, three Louis
Vuitton purses, one pair
of shoes, two Balenciaga
purses, and a large, metal,
digital safe with unknown
contents, collectively valued
at $12,600, reportedly
were stolen from a residence
on Dume Drive, according
to a Jan. 7 report.
The alleged victim said
she left and secured her
residence on Jan. 6, but
did not set the alarm system
because a construction
crew was going to work
on the residence the next
morning. She stated her
residence was under construction
because of damage
from the Woolsey Fire,
and she was not currently
living there. On Jan. 7, she
received a call from the
construction manager that
the home was burglarized.
The police were unable to
contact the construction
manager for a statement.
Jan. 10
• A vehicle burglary was
reported at Malibu Lagoon
State Park, 3835 Cross
Creek Road. The estimated
damage was $400 to the
front door handle.
• Two vehicle tires valued
at $186 each reportedly
were vandalized in the gated
community of Vista Pacifica.
The alleged victim
stated he had parked his vehicle
in front of his townhome,
and the next morning
noticed his tires were
vandalized. He did not see
any possible suspects, nor
could think of any possible
suspects. No witnesses or
surveillance video of the
incident was found. The
responding officer was unable
to detect what kind of
object was used to damage
the tires.
Jan. 5
• A Samsung Galaxy cellphone
valued at $850 reportedly
was stolen from
203356 Pacific Coast
Highway. The alleged
victim and her husband
drove to Moonshadows
restaurant and had their
vehicle parked by a valet
attendant there. She stated
she left her cellphone in
the center console, but noticed
it missing when they
retrieved the vehicle and
drove home. A phone retrieval
app was used, and
a location was given in
South Gate.
storms
From Page 4
damaging the bridge on
PCH, and swamping the
Civic Center in floodwater
and mud. That flood
was also thought to be
intensified by upstream
fire damage. Almost the
entire Malibu Canyon
corridor burned in 1993,
leaving steep slopes vulnerable
during the heavy
rains.
The 1995, series of
storms once again caused
mudflows on PCH at Big
Rock that were unrelated
to fire, but it also caused
problems for residents
in the fire-ravaged Las
Flores, Rambla and Topanga
neighborhoods.
More recently, in the
winter of 2014-15, rainstorms
triggered mud and
fire debris flows on PCH
north of Yerba Buena,
shutting down 10 miles of
the highway in both directions
for weeks. The mud
was a direct result of the
2013 Springs Fire, which
created slide hazards that
just needed water to become
active.
The recent series of
storms dropped an estimated
4.5 inches of rain in the
Point Dume area, to nearly
7 inches in Malibu Canyon,
bringing the total for
the season so far in Malibu
to around 12 inches.
The “final alert” from
the City of Malibu went
out at 9:50 a.m. on the
morning of Friday, Jan.
18, notifying residents that
the rain-related emergency
was over, and all evacuations
were lifted. Malibu
made it through this round
of storms without a major
disaster, although the
canyon roads remained
closed.
While residents may
be weary of emergency
notifications and evacuation
orders, Malibu’s history
confirms the risk of
post-fire mudflows is a legitimate
concern, and one
that will continue to be a
major issue in high-risk
areas like Malibu West for
several years following
the fire.
Hikers urged to ‘exercise caution’
as most MRCA parks reopen
Escondido Canyon
Park, Charmlee
Wilderness Park
remain closed
Submitted by the
Mountains Recreation and
Conservation Authority
The Mountains Recreation
and Conservation Authority
has opened most of
the MRCA-managed parks
that had been previously
closed by conditions related
to the November 2018
Woolsey Fire.
The MRCA has cleared
hazardous conditions from
the parks and open space. In
addition, in order to assure
public safety, the MRCA has
conducted limited radiological
analysis of soils in Upper
Las Virgenes Canyon Open
Space Preserve and other
MRCA areas. The assessment
determined that the fire
had not increased the lowlevel
concentrations that are
generally consistent with
normal background levels.
As always, trail users
should exercise caution in
the open space, and not venture
off established trails so
that plants and wildlife can
recover from the fire aftermath.
The agency has installed
new signs to remind
hikers to stay on the trail
and contribute to the recovery
of the ecosystem.
The following parks managed
by the MRCA that
were previously closed are
now open to the public:
• Cameron Nature Preserve
at Puerco Canyon
• Corral Canyon Park – Sara
Wan Trailhead
• Fran Pavley Meadow
• Las Virgenes View Trail
• Liberty Canyon Trailhead
• Seminole Overlook
• Triunfo Creek Park
• Upper Las Virgenes Canyon
Open Space Preserve
(formerly Ahmanson Ranch)
• Zev Yaroslavsky Las Virgenes
Highlands Park
The following parks managed
by the MRCA remain
closed until further notice:
• Escondido Canyon Park
• Charmlee Wilderness Park
