A MESSAGE FROM
Val Ives
Love Is Blind
You know, I walked into the grocery store the other day and saw that roses
and romantic cards have all but taken over the entry way. I love a good romance
story, and certainly, there are plenty of them to be had with Valentine’s
Day happening this month. However, I want to share an old story that
I’ve always liked, which deals with self-love.
Once upon a time, there was a young girl who had grown increasingly shy
over the years. In addition to her modest style of dress, she always wore a
scarf that hung down over the left side of her face. No one gave much thought
to why she started to drape herself with the thin fabric and over the years,
it just became part of her style. One day, a healer came through the rural
area. As soon as the girl heard about the miracles that the mysterious woman
could work, she rushed down to the center of her village and fell to her knees
in front of the healer, pleading for help. Just as quickly, the healer reached
down to the girl’s arm and helped her back to her feet, then asked: “My dear,
why do you hide your pretty face?” The girl answered, “When I was young, I
fell from a tree and the wound on my face left an ugly scar.” The healer gently
pulled the scarf away from the girl’s face and spoke kindly: “That was many
years ago; scars are a reminder that successful healing has taken place.” Then,
she held up a small mirror and the girl looked at her reflection. What she first
noticed in the mirror was not the scar, but her shining eyes and pretty cheekbones.
The young girl smiled as she realized that the healer had given her the
freedom to appreciate her own beauty and she let the scarf slip through her
fingers and fly away in the breeze.
My friend, I hope that you find time to turn a mirror on yourself this month
and appreciate how far you have come in life. Here’s to you and yours— may
you have a great month, full of love and appreciation!
P.S. If you ever need anything, you can send me a quick text or email, or give
me a call. Reach me at val@valerieives.com or 951-757-6065
Save at the Store
You’ve got to buy food, but you don’t have to
spend wildly on it. Smart shopping can save
you a bundle. For instance, if you save just $20
a month on groceries, you’ve banked more
than $200 over the year. Here are some strategies
to save on your food bill:
• Plan your shopping carefully. Look through
your refrigerator and pantry to see what you
need on a regular basis. This lets you look for
sales and buy those products in bulk.
• Cut back on convenience foods. Don’t buy
things like packaged salads or pre-cut celery.
You’re paying big for a small convenience.
• Use coupons. If you find that you buy some
name- brand foods regularly, then start clipping
the coupons for them. Otherwise, generic
foods are comparable in quality and content,
and usually less expensive.
• Check out different stores. You may find
as much as a 10-15% difference on identical
products at different stores, depending on the
neighborhood and demographic factors. Shop
at the store that is the cheapest overall.
Restfulness: The Secret To a Good Memory
One key to success is your memory. Being able
to pick up and remember the fine details of
what you’ve learned can help you move forward
quickly. What’s the
best strategy for using your memory effectively?
Sleep.
As an article on the Medical News Today website
explains, sleep is essential for consolidating
memories. Insufficient or poor sleep makes
the synapses in your brain less effective, which
interferes with your ability to learn new information.
Moreover, recent studies suggest that taking a
quick nap, or even just resting quietly for 10
minutes or so, can help new information settle
into your memory so you can access it more
readily later.
After a training session or an important conversation,
take a few minutes to sit back, close
your eyes, and think of nothing. Even if you
don’t fall asleep, you’ll have a better grasp of
the information when you go back to work.
Stick With Exercise For
Better Physical and Mental
Health
It isn’t news that there are many benefits to regular
exercise, yet this nation still faces a growing
obesity problem, high levels of stress and
increased incidences of depression, despite the
fact that numerous studies show exercise can
help combat all of this and more.
While most people have a whole range of excuses
for not getting regular exercise, the reality
is that it actually isn’t that difficult to get an
effective exercise program started and to stick
with it.
The key, if they currently aren’t exercising on a
regular basis, is to start slowly. Almost nothing
can kill that determination to exercise like trying
to do too much and feeling sore, tired and
discouraged the next day.
The goal of regular exercise is to get at least 30
minutes of activity most days of the week, but
it doesn’t have to be the starting point. If someone
is currently sedentary, first check with a
family physician before starting an exercise
program.
When they do start, they should keep it simple.
Maybe 15 to 20 minutes of any mild physical
activity that they enjoy. It can be a brisk walk,
a short bicycle ride or just walking one flight
of stairs at work instead of that elevator. They
should look for exercise that gets them moving
and breathing just a little harder. Then they
can increase the time or exertion level slowly
so that they feel comfortable as they get into
better shape.
Another way to stick with an exercise program
is to make it part of a daily routine. Put it into
a phone calendar just like a business meeting
or an appointment. They can make it a time
each day when they spend a few minutes on
themselves.
It also helps to keep a journal of the exercise.
Do a simple note for each day of what exercise
was done, for how long and how they felt at the
beginning and at the end.
Odds are good that if someone is a bit stressed
or anxious when they began, they’ll find they’re
more relaxed and calm when they finish.
Numerous studies have found that exercise is a
great way to reduce stress and anxiety. And its
health benefits? Combating heart disease, losing
weight and helping control diabetes, just to
name a few. Exercising regularly and getting
more fit is one of the best things people can do
for their body and mind.
Architectural
Charm to Your
Home!
South Temecula has mostly newer constructed homes...but maybe you long for
that ‘old house’ charm, there’s plenty you can do to add character. Crown molding,
baseboards, chair rails, wainscoting and recessed panels are all great ways to
inject personality. If you have a stairwell, replacing the handrails and newel post
with more elegant woodwork is another way. Check salvage yards, classified ads,
and online sites, from eBay to Craigslist, to snag impressive vintage pieces on
the cheap. Even swapping out builder-grade light switches and outlet plates with
nickel and brass-finished ones, or replacing a modern pendant with a historic
reproduction fixture, will make a strong impact!

favorite goodies and a note. They’ll surely be the envy of co-workers!
Bonus points for making them heart-shaped!
Netflix Night - Turn on Netflix, queue up “When Harry Met Sally” (or
some equally romantic classic film,) open a bottle of bubbly, and
enjoy a night snuggled up on your comfy couch.
Make a Romantic Spotify Playlist - It’s a thoughtful throwback to the
romantic mixtapes we used to make “back in the day.” It’s also a gift
that will last well beyond Valentine’s Day and doesn’t cost a cent to
make.
Opening Day Tickets - Baseball season is just around the corner…
surprise the sports fan in your life with tickets to opening day. Put the
tickets in a Valentine card and to make it extra special purchase a
t-shirt or hat to pair them with.
Play Tourist in Temecula - Plan some touristy activities that you and
your honey have never gotten around to doing, and don’t be embarrassed
to take a zillion corny couples pictures.
SPRUCE STREET FOOTBRIDGE
Spruce Street & First Avenue, San Diego
The Spruce Street Suspension bridge is fun to see and walk
across. It was built in 1912. Overlooks a canyon and as you
walk across the bridge. This street is also fun to walk as it is
filled with historical landmark residences.

You may have a friend or relative in your life
whose birthday is February 29. Maybe they
fudge it and celebrate on February 28 or March
1 every year, or possibly they just have a megaparty
every four years. (Or they have a megaparty
every year, because why not.) So imagine
how frustrating it’d be to have been born in
the Swedish Empire on February 30, 1712, the
only day of its kind in history.
Naturally, it was a pretty complex set of events
that led to February 1712 getting two leap
days. Our modern, Western calendar is called
the Gregorian calendar, which was developed
under Pope Gregory XIII. It’s basically just a
series of improvements to the Julian calendar,
created by Julius Caesar.
While the Gregorian calendar was completed
in 1582, adoption by many countries was slow,
so it took over 100 years for the Swedish Empire
(which was primarily Protestant and not
Catholic) to adopt it. Because the Julian to
Gregorian swap included a difference of ten
days, many regions simply skipped their calendar
ahead a week and a half. The Swedish
Empire decided to roll out the difference more
gradually, and intended to skip leap days for
forty years, starting in 1700, until the calendar
was finally correct.
Except that didn’t happen because, shortly afterward,
war broke out and everyone forgot
about the leap days until 1712, when Sweden’s
King, Charles (or Karl) XII, declared that
they would forget about the Gregorian calendar
and just switch back to the Julian instead.
Since they did manage to skip one leap day, in
1700 (which was a leap year under the Julian
calendar, but not the Gregorian), they simply
decided to add it back onto the calendar
that February—meaning that February 1712
had two leap days according to Sweden’s calendar,
which gave them the only February 30
in history. (Sweden finally went through with
the Gregorian switch in 1753 and just skipped
ahead a few days, like everyone else.)
Garage Brewing Company
In most garages, you can find what people
drive. In Garage Brewing Company’s garage,
you can find what drives them — quality craft
beer.
Established in 2013, they began brewing in
what was once an eight bay garage at the end
of Old Town Temecula. The brewpub and taproom
was aptly named Garage Brewing Co,
not only due to its previous life, but to show an
appreciation to where the craft beer industry
originated — in the garages of brewers. They
have created a family-friendly environment
where their fast-fired, kustom-built pizzas and
quality, Kustom craft beers provide unlimited
possibilities of flavor while bringing friends
and family together. In 2016, they expanded
their business and now also have an off-site,
full production brewery in Murrieta.
From the beginning, they set out on a mission:
to provide top-quality craft beer that tastes fantastic
and appeals to a broad spectrum of beer
lovers. They are committed to excellence and
only use the finest ingredients, state-of-the art
equipment, and top-notch coding processes.
They maintain six core, year-round styles while
also regularly rotating in seasonal creations for
a total of 15+ beers on tap at all times. As an
independent brewery, they are free to modify
beer recipes and develop exciting and creative
spins on standard styles.
Temecula CPR Classes
Looking for CPR Classes, First Aid, BLS,
ACLS, and PALS Certification and Recertification
Courses in or around Temecula, California?
You’re probably wondering why would
you ever need to take a CPR class? Whether
you’re in the medical field, who may need an
AHA certification to work in the hospital,
clinic, or other healthcare setting; you’re a personal
trainer requiring an AHA certification to
help physically transform your clients; you’re a
lifeguard who might need to resuscitate someone
who drowns in the swimming pool; parent
who finds their child or infant unresponsive;
you’re involved in an unfortunate motor vehicle
accident and need to assist a person who
is not breathing and/or do not have a pulse;
you’re a Good Samaritan who just happens to
be in a scene where a person has passed out;
or you’re an individual who has no medical
training or education whatsoever and want to
help an individual you care about, you should
know that every year there are approximately
383,000 out of hospital cardiac pulmonary arrest.
That’s more than 1,000 a day! This fact
alone is enough for anyone to understand that
taking a CPR class is indispensable and desirable
in any medical emergency that may or
may not happen at all. However, with at least
1,000 people per day having a cardiac pulmonary
arrest, there’s a small chance that your
CPR training can make a significant difference.

It’s all here, a pileup of comic adventures, a little romance
Choose your planting site carefully.
Strawberries are picky about where
they set down roots. Plant in a location
that gets at least 6 hours of sun a day.
To reduce the chance of Verticillium wilt
and soil borne pests, avoid areas where
tomatoes, peppers, eggplants or potatoes
have grown in the past three to four
years.
Banish weeds. Weeds compete with
shallow-rooted strawberry plants for
water and nutrients and often harbor insects
and disease.
Pay attention to soil preparation. Strawberries
require a soil on the acidic side
with a pH between 5.5 and 6.8. Because
