Audi Abu Dhabi increases sales by 6.8% in 2018
Audi Abu Dhabi have posted a year-on-year growth of 6.8% in 2018, in the face of competitive market
period. The new market introductions from Audi in 2018 demonstrated
innovative and progressive design, engineering and quality and
reinforced the brand promise of ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’,
showcasing advanced new technologies and the superior performance
that people have come to associate with the brand.”
Looking through the eyes of an artist ----- an interview with Ms. Shamsa Al Dhaheri
38
It didn’t take long for an Ali & Sons artist, Ms.
Shamsa Al Dhaheri to entertain a request for a
quick interview by Access Point Newsletter.
This was how the interview went.
AP: How was your experience post student after
graduation?
Shamsa: I graduated from NYUAD in 2017.
Transitioning from about 18 years of the same type
of school-schedule to being an “adult” was very
difficult for me as I was used to having the same
routine, going to school, coming back, doing my
homework, and repeat. I had to have a mental
transition to cope with the change and make use of
my fear of the unknown rather than fall victim to it.
AP: What’s the biggest thing you have learned, or
greatest revelation you’ve had, since graduation?
Shamsa: The biggest thing that I have learned after
graduating is that it’s okay to not have things figured
out and it’s fine to have time off to just reflect and
discover what you actually want. After long years in
a school environment, it’s very important to utilize
the time you have as a detached individual. It took
me a lot of time to understand this, especially since
there is so much pressure to know exactly where
you’re headed after graduation and where you see
yourself in five or 10 years assuming stability. It’s
fine to know exactly what you want, but I
feel there is no emphasis in stating that
it’s also fine if you don’t know what
you want to do. On the contrary,
I believe it might be the
best way to move
forward. There’s this
illusion that success
means you have to be
constantly pushing and killing
yourself with work but rest and reflection
are essential parts towards “success”.
AP: What do you like to do best in your spare time?
Why do you like doing it?
Shamsa: In my spare time I love spending it with my
family and friends, reading or painting. I challenge
myself to finish a book every month or two. I prefer
doing something that is calming or relaxing, giving
me a little break from the hectic day-to-day activities.
AP: You have a design talent. I know it runs in the
family. Would you want to discuss it? In what field
of design do you excel in?
Shamsa: From a very young age I’ve had an
attachment towards the arts. It was a form of
expression and a way to translate my imagination
into inventions and creations. Ever since I was a
child, I realized that art was the only tool that
allowed me to be myself fully, and without fear.
There were a lot of things in life that I couldn’t
understand or things that frustrated me. Art was my
way of understanding and thinking about these
issues. To me, an artwork is the equivalent of a
research paper but in a different form. It takes a lot
of studying and analyzing and many many drafts to
get it right. And sometimes I don’t get it right but
that’s fine too. It’s part of the process.
AP: I know you like arts but where do you see
yourself five years from now?
Shamsa: This is a very tough question. I am not
really sure. I try not to overwhelm myself with
thoughts on the future. My main focus is developing
myself from all aspects and take things one step at
a time.
AP: Ali & Sons has Amwaj as a subsidiary and
Madame Fatima has Ruwaya also in the jewellery
line. Do you plan to join one maybe both companies?
Or would you rather go to a slightly different path...
towards designing?
Shamsa: To join, maybe in the future, yes. But I
would definitely join the jewellery field as it is the
area I feel more excited about and it is the area I feel
more connected to.
I studied visual arts in university where I had the
opportunity to try different media and forms of
expression. I try to experiment and try different
things because, for me, the artistic tools I use depend
on the concepts and ideas that I formulate. I’m
actually not sure yet in what I excel at the most,
although I am constantly trying to challenge myself
technically and conceptually.
I want to gain more experience and knowledge and
also explore my many interests if ever I will join Ali &
sons. And hopefully when the time comes, I might
work for both Amwaj and Ruwaya as they are close
to my heart. They are drastically different in style
and image and I think it’s fun to dabble in both. I will
always be designing and making art no matter
where I decided to go. I believe my artistic abilities
enhances or adds to my job and visa versa.
AP: How was your experience interning for Ruwaya
Jewellery?
Shamsa: It was one of the most important
experiences of my life. Right after I graduated I
interned in Ruwaya Jewellery where I collaborated
with Fatima Al Dhaheri on creating an installation
for Dubai Design Week that same year. “The Palm
Tree” was launched as their new collection. I created
an installation specifically for it and we had an
amazingly positive feedback. It was a privilege and a
humbling experience to be given such an amazing
opportunity in handling a major event. I grew a lot
through this internship, learning event management,
marketing, and business management and so many
other impactful lessons. I would sit in on various
meetings spanning from jewellery design, marketing
strategies while also travelling for gem and stone
hunting. It was my first taste of the real world in all
its bitter sweetness.
AP: What is your current role or job?
Shamsa: I acquired my first job a year later in the
Department of Culture and Tourism under
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Museum. I am also
currently enrolled in the Sheikha Salama Emerging
Artists Fellowship program honing my artistic
abilities.
AP: If you were to contribute something in the
family business, what would it be and why?
Shamsa: I would like to develop and expand the
creative sector of the company. Creativity leads to
innovation which is the best way towards progress
and the best way to move the company forward in
my opinion thus far.
AP: What advice can you impart to the readers of
this newsletter?
Shamsa: I advise people to get lost in what they
love and most importantly reflect. I highly encourage
people to not attach themselves to a job right after
graduation but to instead build their knowledge
and experience and not to fear instability. And while
things might not be how you meticulously planned,
that might turn out to be for the better. Don’t let
the image of what you’re supposed to be destroy
the opportunities that are right in front of you.
AP: Thank you Shamsa for this interview opportunity
and sharing you thoughts about art and your future
plans. Good luck on your future endeavours.
