Residents meet with city officials to discuss proposed bike paths
Lockport residents met
with Lockport City Officials
Thursday, Jan. 31, at City
Hall to weigh in on a bike
master plan.
The open house is part
of an ongoing effort by the
City to prioritize trail development.
The process started
in September and this is
the first time the town has
sought public input on bike
paths since 2003.
“We want to listen to the
residents get their feedback
on what they think about
building in Lockport,” said
Lori M. Vierow, a landscape
architect with GreenbergFarrow,
a design and engineering
firm contracted by the City.
Despite sub-zero temperatures
and snow, about 20
people showed up to review
maps of proposed trails. Vierow
said the evening meeting
would be augmented
with public surveys before
she presented a draft document
of preferred pathways.
“This is the very start of
the process,” she said.
The eventual pathways
proposal will reflect public
preference for route as well
as design, though so far there
is no settled route or design.
Vierow presented designs
from various cities, with
some bike pathways painted
along existing streets and
other pathways separated entirely
from streets and automobile
traffic. She said that
while separate bike paths are
generally safer, they’re also
more costly as they require
new infrastructure and land.
City Administrator Ben
Benson said the City and
the Lockport Township Park
District will share in the
eventual cost.
Even after the draft document
is completed with public
input, Vierow said she
doubts the City will tackle
the project all at once, instead
paving sections at a
time as funding becomes
available, as the City started
to do in 2003.
Vierow said that in the
16 years since the City last
began developing the plan,
the housing market collapse
in 2008 and 2009 stymied
development and Benson
added that the town itself has
developed in different ways
than city planners could
have foreseen in 2003 and so
a new plan is necessary.
“This plan has since doubled
in size,” Benson said.
Benson said he expects the
plan to move forward soon,
with work beginning possibly
as early as this year, adding
that residents can expect
a large presentation in April
wherein the City will present
priority areas for bike paths
as well as the preferred design.
The open house Thursday
was informal and did not
include any presentations.
Rather, citizens and city officials
engaged in a dialogue
with one another. Outdoors
enthusiasts on both sides
seemed to prefer separate,
Lori Vierow (left) talks with Lockport Women’s Club President Jane Passaglia about possible
bike routes.
paved bike lanes, which
could be a boon for pedestrians,
too.
“I’ve had three pairs of
my shoes caked in mud,”
said Sonni Williams, the
City’s attorney. “As a runner,
I would love to have the
ability to run in a paved and
safe area.”
Lockport Women’s Club
President Jane Passaglia
agreed, and added a separate
path could be good for families.
“I would love to be able to
say, ‘let’s go riding’ without
thinking I’m responsible for
[putting] kids in a dangerous
situation,” she said.
The city is also conducting
a survey for residents
who would like to give their
input but couldn’t attend the
open house. The survey can
be found on the city’s website
and Facebook page.
by T. Andrew Coyle
Attorney at Law
Can a homeowner kick their
grown child out of the house or
tell an unwanted house guest that
they have to leave even if they
don’t want to? Unfortunately, the
answer is “Yes and No”.
If you are the owner of a house,
you certainly have the right to
tell someone to leave; but, if the
person refuses and they have
been living in the house, there
are certain legal procedures you
have to follow before you can kick
them out and not let them back
in. First, you have to serve them
with a written notice to vacate
(and you may have to give them
30 days’ notice before they are
required to leave). If the unwanted
person doesn’t leave after
receiving notice, you then need
to file a formal eviction action
at your county courthouse, have
the person served with a court
summons, and follow the court’s
procedures from there.
This would apply to anyone living
in your house or property that
doesn’t have a written lease
agreement. So, while we may not
expect our grown children to sign
a lease, it’s definitely a good idea
for any other long-term visitors
or tenants. If you would like help
Lockport police officer
injured responding to
9th Street bridge crash
Max Lapthorne, Editor
from Thursday, Jan. 31
A Lockport police officer
suffered minor injuries
Thursday, Jan. 31, after
being involved in a crash
while responding to a call
for a separate crash on the
9th Street bridge, according
to LPD Deputy Chief Ron
Huff.
At approximately 7:35
a.m., the officer was responding
to a call to assist
the Illinois State Police
with a crash that had occurred
on the 9th Street
bridge. While responding
to the call, the officer was
struck by a vehicle that
had entered the officer’s
lane, according to Lockport
Police Chief Terry
Lemming.
The officer was transported
to a local hospital
and released later in the day.
No one else involved in the
crashes received medical attention.
The 9th Street bridge was
closed for two hours because
of the icy conditions and was
reopened at approximately
9:25 a.m.
The Illinois State Police
is handling the crash investigation
and could not
be reached immediately for
comment.
Main Street Lockport’s 1836 Event
seeks to upscale the Scale House
Alex Ivanisevic
Assistant Editor
Six months in the making,
Main Street Lockport’s annual
1836 Event is a week
away, and this year’s iteration
is to feature even more
fundraising attractions and
activities than in years past.
Former Main Street Lockport
President Tina Keller
said the fundraiser, which is
to be held on Feb. 15 at the
Public Landing, 200 W. 8th
St. in Lockport, has been
held on and off for more than
25 years, having recently
been re-started. Planning the
1836 Event each year relies
on the Main Street Lockport
board members, Keller said.
“This year’s theme is
upscale the Scale House,”
Keller said.
She said she hopes the
amount of funds raised will
increase this year, and predicted
there will be 85 or
more attendees.
“In the past, we put money
raised toward planters and
lighting,” Keller said.
The main goal of the annual
fundraiser is to improve
the historic downtown
area, and this year
proceeds are to be used to
light the Scale House.
A digital photo booth, live
music, Main Street Wall of
Wine and VIP access to Gallery
Seven are to be part of
the evening’s festivities.
“The 1836 Event is the
only fundraiser for Main
Street,” Keller said.
Main Street Lockport’s
first online auction, which is
to contribute to the fundraising
efforts, is already open
and can be found at https://
bit.ly/2WAAt39. The auction
site is open through Feb. 12.
Lockport Cub Scouts’
derby cars get test run
Amanda Del Buono
Freelance Reporter
Outside of Hanna-Barbera’s
“Wacky Races,” it’s
a rare sight to see the Batmobile,
a tank and a dinosaur
car on the same race
track. But these cars went
toe-to-toe Saturday, Feb. 2,
during Lockport Cub Scout
Pack 61’s annual Pinewood
Derby.
The race was held at the
Lockport American Legion,
and nearly all of the pack’s
Scouts participated along
with their families. In all, 51
handmade cars took on the
track, racing in six gradebased
categories, from kindergarten
to fifth grade, as
well as a family car category.
The Pinewood Derby
is a favorite event for the
Scouts, who spend nearly a
week building their derby
cars with the help of their
parents.
“This, and in Cub Scouting
in general, gives the
boys a project that’s hands
on, that they can do themselves
with limited parent
oversight,” said Mike
Carroll, cub master of Cub
Scout Pack 61. “And it’s a
competition, but the object
isn’t to beat the others, it’s
to have the fastest car.”
Committee chair Greg
Krumdick added that it’s
also a chance for the Scouts
to explore their creativity, as
some focus on the aerodynamic
design of their cars,
while others prefer working
Lencioni, 11, check out the derby cars Saturday, Feb. 2,
Legion. Bob Klein/22nd Century Media
American Legion for all
of its support as the pack’s
charter, the pack has the
American Legion’s Commander
Mike Meyers to
pick his favorite car.
“To honor the American
Legion, we let Mike Meyers
pick the most patriotic car,"
Carroll said. “Mike Meyers
in particular is super good to
us… Basically, anything we
ask for he helps us do, and
we try to help them.”
As with any Scouting
project, the Pinewood Derby
provides the Scouts with
practical, hands-on skills
such as working with tools,
while also bonding with
their parents.
“It teaches them to work
with their hands, and it’s a
good bonding experience,"
Krumdick said. "When
they’re still young, parents
do a lot more of the work,
and each year the Scout gets
to do a little more of the
work."
The pack also encourages
siblings and parents to get
involved with the family car
category, in which they can
build their own derby car to
enter.
Scout Elijah Detman, 7,
raced for the second time
this year and recruited his
grandfather, Dale Detman
of Romeoville, to help him
build his car. Along with
Elijah’s car, Dale was also
recruited to help build a car
for Elijah’s brother, Judah,
4. Their dad, Lockport resident
Nick Detman, said the
event is always fun and exciting
for the boys.
“Last year we did it, but
this year [Elijah] worked
with grandpa,” Nick said.
“It’s a lot of fun, he gets really
excited to build the car.”
Dale added that Elijah was
most excited to paint the car.
With a golden theme,
Elijah named his car The
Golden Nugget, while Judah
gave his car a longer name,
The Golden Gamulet and
Golden Dragon.
Part of the fun of the Pinewood
Derby is learning how
to improve the design from
the Lockport Legend’s
Standout Student
Sponsored by Marquette Bank
Katie Baker, St.
Dennis School
eighth-grader
Katie Baker was chosen as
Standout Student for her
academic excellence.
What is one essential you
must have when studying?
When studying, one essential
I need is notes that I
either took during class, researched
on my own, or that
were provided by a teacher.
What do you like to do when
not in school or studying?
When I am not in school
or studying, I am playing
sports, practicing in my
choir or having fun with my
family.
What is your dream job?
My dream job is to be a
photographer. I’ve always
enjoyed pictures and photographers
have captured
cities, landscapes and everyday
objects.
What are some of your most
played songs on your iPod?
Some of the most played
songs include “A Thousand
Years” by Christina Perri,
“Back to Beautiful” by Sofia
Carson and “Eyes Wide
Open” by Sabrina Carpenter.
What is one thing people
don’t know about you?
One thing people don’t
know about me is I know
how to make tamales.
Whom do you look up to and
why?
I look up to my mom because
she shows me how to
balance my life and how I
should keep God in daily life.
What do you keep under
your bed?
I keep boxes of toys I used
to play with when I was
younger such as Barbies,
American Girl Dolls and
Legos.
Who is your favorite teacher
and why?
My favorite teacher is my
homeroom teacher, Mrs.
Barry. She is my favorite
teacher because she teaches
my class to be respectful, responsible
and God-centered
in everyday life, no matter
how challenging it may
seem.
What’s your favorite class
and why?
My favorite class is art because
we are allowed to express
ourselves while learning
different techniques and
elements of art.
What’s one thing that
stands out about your
school?
When I came to St. Dennis
in third grade, I immediately
felt as if I was part of the
community. Whether it was
swaying our hands during
the Alleluia of having helpful
and considerate staff, my
school has always been very
welcoming.
What extracurricular(s) do
you wish your school had?
Although St. Dennis has
Photo Submitted
many after-school activities,
I do wish that there as an art
club for junior high.
What’s your morning
routine?
My morning routine starts
when I wake up and get
dressed into my school uniform.
Next, I bruch my hair
and teeth and wash my face.
Then, I eat breakfast and
grab my lunch and backpack
and head to school.
If you could change one thing
about school what would it
be?
If I could change one
thing about school, I think
it would be to not have any
tests the day you get back
from the weekend.
What’s your favorite thing
to eat in the cafeteria?
My favorite school-provided
lunch was chili and
corn bread.
What’s your best memory
from school?
My best memory was the
first day of third grade. I was
the new kid and was expecting
to be sort of an outsider,
but I immediately made
some of the closest friends
I have ever made in my life.
My name is BobCat! I
am a 3.5-year-old kitty. I
was adopted from Paws
at 7 months old. I have
a best friend named Mr.
Gray Rattles who is my
pet toy mouse I carry
around to every room I walk into. I even carry him in
my mouth all the way upstairs to bed. I also enjoy
playing on my cat tower. I love to bite toes at 3 a.m.
waking my human. I love to drink from the bathroom
sink. I also enjoy “floor kibble” which is how I prefer to
eat my kibble — off the floor. Bowls are so last year! I
would love to be Pet of the Week. Meow!
FROM THE HOMER HORIZON
Understanding World
Religions series educates on
various faiths
Since last month, Our
Mother of Good Counsel in
Homer Glen has been hosting
a weekly class on Understanding
World Religions
to help members of the community
learn about different
faiths. Led by the Rev. Joseph
Broudou, pastor of the parish,
the class explores the three
main Abrahamic religions —
Judaism, Christianity and Islam,
as well as Hinduism and
Buddhism.
As part of the parish’s Faith
Formation and Religious
Education program, the Understanding
World Religions
series was created with the
intention of answering questions
about other religions, as
well as finding connections
and similarities within other
faiths.
Remaining classes are
from 1-2:30 p.m. Thursdays
through Feb. 14, as well as
7-8:30 p.m. Mondays through
Feb. 18, respectively. Refreshments
are served, and
walk-ins are invited.
Frankfort restaurant mixes up
special drink to benefit charity
Throughout the month of
February, Frankfort’s Dancing
Marlin Restaurant will
donate all proceeds from sales
of its new Heartini cocktail to
the nonprofit group Suburban
Service League, which provides
financial assistance to
charities in Chicago’s south
suburbs.
“With Frankfort embracing
this restaurant, we want to be
able to pay back for what everyone
has done for us,” said
Jackie Gabriel, the restaurant’s
general manager.
The Heartini was the brainchild
of the restaurant’s mixologist,
Desiree Gleason, who
previously designed a pink
drink called “Stop and Smell
the Roses” to benefit the Cancer
FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION
VVAC’s annual open art
show brings love and talent
together
No matter what one loves,
it will be displayed through
various mediums of art at the
open art show “What Do You
Love?” at the Vogt Visual Arts
Center in Tinley Park, slated
for Feb. 2-24.
An opening reception is
scheduled from 1-4 p.m. Saturday,
Feb. 9, at which time
art fans can enjoy food and
light refreshments, as well
as meet some of the artists
whose work is on display.
The open show in February
is for any artist of any age and
any level of talent. Gallery
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
Local receives award rarely
given to private pilots
The title of Federal Aviation
Administration Wright Brothers
Master Pilot is not one
handed out lightly. In fact, it
takes half a century of exemplary
flying just to be eligible.
So when New Lenox resident
Simon “Bud” Vancina
learned he had received the
award late last year, it took a
moment for him to grasp what
was happening.
“To be singled out as a
private pilot, flying my own
aircraft, it’s pretty neat,” Vancina
said.
The award recognizes
dedicated service, technical
expertise, professionalism
and many other outstanding
contributions that further
the cause of aviation safety.
In order to be eligible for the
FAA Wright Brothers Master
Pilot award, pilots must have
50 years of flying experience,
marked from the date of their
first solo flight, and hold a
U.S. Civil Aviation Authority
or FAA pilot certificate for 50
years.
a.ivanisevic@22ndcenturymedia.com
My least favorite
moment on the
first day of school
growing up was when the
teacher told the students
to share a fun fact about
themselves, and suddenly I
wouldn’t be able to think of
a single remotely interesting
thing about myself.
What was supposed to
be my first day on the 22nd
Century Media team didn’t
exactly go as planned
because unfortunately, my
car didn’t stand a chance
against the winter storm
that hit the area last week.
Eventually I made it, and
unlike like my first-day-ofschool
experiences, I am
very excited to introduce
myself. My name is Alex
Ivanisevic, and I am the
new assistant editor for The
Lockport Legend.
I recently moved back
home to Chicagoland after
living in central Iowa for
the past four years. In May,
I graduated from Iowa State
University with a bachelor’s
of science in journalism
and in religious studies
with a minor in philosophy.
At the start of my college
career I didn’t exactly
know what field I wanted
to enter. I knew I had a
passion for learning about
peoples’ different ways
of life, but I soon learned
I also had a passion for
telling their stories when
I joined a student magazine
on campus. The rest,
as they say, is history. I
declared my double major
during my sophomore year
and completely fell in love
with journalism.
Shortly after graduation
and after ending an internship
as a communications
assistant for a company in
the Iowa State University
Research Park, I spent five
months as The Des Moines
Register’s news intern.
Much to my delight and
surprise, near the end of
that internship I was hired
by 22nd Century Media.
I am beyond excited to
get to know the Lockport
community, take on this
new journey and gain more
experience working in the
field of journalism.
A lesson I learned my
freshman year when I
joined that magazine, and
once again when I attempted
to come to work my first
day but instead ended up on
the side of the road in the
snow, is to take each day as
it comes, surprises and all.
And I am definitely looking
forward to where the future
takes me.
Mackeys’ Pub in
Orland Park hosted its annual
of Sunday, Jan. 27.
Mackeys’ has hosted the
event for the past several
local veterans. A veteran
himself, owner John
is not the only way the local
pub gives back to veterans.
“Anybody who served,
you get a special camaraderie
served,” Mackey said.
As in years past, the proceeds
of the event will be
C.A.R.E partners with library for Seed Exchange
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
With the Polar Vortex in
the rearview mirror, it's time
to start thinking about spring
gardens.
On Saturday, Feb. 2, Citizens
Against Ruining the
Environment partnered with
the White Oak Library District
Lockport Branch for its
ninth annual Seed Exchange,
the seventh hosted at the library.
The free event – held
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – allowed
gardeners to trade
heirloom seeds and seeds
free from genetically modified
organisms while learning
about everything from
worm composting to the garden's
relationship with butterflies
and bees.
“It's just so nice to be able
to educate people on how
important it is to grow your
own food, to know where it
comes from and to be aware
of all of the vitamin content
that's in it versus buying
produce at the store,” said
C.A.R.E. co-director Mary
Burnitz.
Heirloom seeds are open
pollinated and were often
developed more than 50
years ago. These seeds produce
flowers and vegetables
in a traditional manner free
from GMOs and other additives
which can change the
seed in any number of ways.
“If you save hybridized
seeds, next year you're
not going to get that true
plant," Burnitz said. "With
heirlooms and open pollinated
seeds, when you
save your seeds from peppers,
tomatoes, zinnias,
cosmos, whatever, that is
what you're going to get the
next year. You're going to
get that same plant. A lot
of stores are even selling
plants that have neonicotinoids
in them which is killing
the bees.”
C.A.R.E. co-director Ellen Rendulich prepares the “A Life
with Less Plastic” station.
Co-director Jenifer Garlitz
added: “Another real
problem with GMO crops is
in most of the GMO crops
more pesticides are used
on them than conventional
produce. There's one kind
of GMO corn that used less
chemicals, but everything
else takes more chemicals.
It's very bad and it affects
our health because it gets in
our ground water. That's a
big deal.”
Environmental and health
factors aside, heirloom seeds
produce vegetables that simply
taste better.
“I do find with heirloom
tomato plants that the flavor
is definitely better than the
regular tomatoes, that's why
I like to grow them,” said
Garlitz, noting that while
heirlooms may not produce
as many fruits, it is a quality
over quantity situation.
Anna Stange, volunteer
seed library curator at the
Blue Island Library, was also
on hand at the seed exchange
teaching attendees the inexpensive
and easy process of
seed saving from threshing
to creating their own seed
library.
Environmental Educator
Joan O'Keefe with the
Will County Land Use Department
further educated
gardening enthusiasts about
worm compost and how the
technique can prevent food
waste from entering landfills
by transforming it into a rich
compost for the garden.
White Oak Library District
Lockport Adult and
Teen Services Supervisor
Evangeline Stephenson, explained
that the Seed Saving
program builds on the
library's desire to partner
with local organizations to
offer unique programs for
the community.
“We provide a lot of different
programs for the public
and this is right along
the lines of what we do,"
Stephenson said. "We have
a nice selection of books on
gardening and seed saving
and we've had other programs
on seed saving as
well. It all fits together.”
A cornerstone of
C.A.R.E.'s current initiative
is educating communities on
reducing overall waste one
step at a time. With this in
mind, the group's next target
is plastic pollution. It's
previously scheduled A Life
with Less Plastic, a Lockport
library presentation, was
threshing Saturday, Feb. 2, during the C.A.R.E. Seed Exchange at the White Oak Library
Lockport Branch. Photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
Sandy Ascot, of Muddy Paws Nursery, displays lasagna
gardening techniques.
cancelled due to the recent
weather and is to be rescheduled
in the not-too-distant
future.
C.A.R.E. began in 1995
when Burnitz, co-director
Ellen Rendulich and other
Lockport Township residents
joined forces to successfully
prevent a waste-toenergy
incinerator — which
Rendulich noted would
introduce the carcinogens
in treated wood to go into
the air — from being built
in Lockport. The group has
since worked to clean up air
and ground water and they
helped to bring Earth Day to
Will County.
Like with any C.A.R.E.
program — which can be
found at www.willcountycare.org
— its members
have taken a communitycentric
approach to seed saving
by encouraging neighbors
to communicate, share
and grow together.
“Our goal is to get people
going with healthy seeds, in
hopes that they'll exchange
with us next year," Rendulich
said. "Even if they're not
sharing with us, maybe they
will share with their neighbors
and friends."

The Dish
Love is in the air at Houlihan’s with an affordable four-course meal
Specialty Valentine’s
Day-themed
cocktails also
featured
James Sanchez
Contributing Editor
It is getting close to that
pressure-filled time of year
when people start figuring
out Valentine’s Day plans.
It is a daunting task for
some, a time at which overthinking
is at a premium.
But rightfully so.
It is a night to convey to
a loved one how much he or
she means to the other.
But Houlihan’s in Orland
Park is helping Valentine’s
Day planners ease their
stress with a prix fixe menu
featuring variety and the
franchise’s fine-dining favorites.
From Feb. 14-17, the
restaurant is to offer a
four-course meal for $50.
And all of the dishes — as
with everything at Houlihan’s
— are made from
scratch, according to Lisa
Johannsen, marketing manager
for the restaurant’s five
Illinois locations: Wheaton,
Naperville, Algonquin,
Geneva and Orland
Park.
“This has been kind of
a staple during Valentine’s
Day at Houlihan’s, because
this makes us unique,”
Johannsen said. “This is
somewhere couples can go
if they’re looking to have a
meal on a budget but still enjoy
a great dinner.”
The meal starts with the
couple’s choice of one appetizer
between the charcrusted
ahi tuna, spinach dip
and one of the restaurant’s
hottest sellers: Houlihan’s
Famous “Shrooms.” The last
one on that list features giant
mushroom caps stuffed
Valentine’s Day Four-Course Menu for Two
When: All day Feb. 14-17
Cost: $50 for two
First course - Choose one
• Houlihan’s Famous “Shrooms”
• Char-crusted ahi tuna
• Small spinach dip
Second Course - Choose Two
• Chicken tortilla soup
• Baked potato soup
• House salad
• Caesar salad
Third Course - Choose Two
• Stuffed chicken breast
• Meatloaf No. 9
• Grilled Atlantic salmon
• Seared Georges Bank scallops (add four more
scallops for $5)
• Petite center-cut filet mignon (4 ounces)
• Huge panko-fried shrimp
All entrees have two sides, except seared Georges
Bank scallops, which are served with risotto.
Fourth course - Choose One
• Brownie batter cake
• Salted caramel gooey butter cake
with a herb and garlic cream
cheese, then battered and
deep fried. Parmesan cheese
and parsley are sprinkled
on top of the fried treat for
color, and they are accompanied
by a horseradish cream
sauce.
“Absolutely guaranteed,
on any fixed menu we have,
you’ll find our ‘Shrooms,’”
Johannsen said. “That’s one
of our recipes in our menu
that hasn’t changed since we
opened in 1972.”
The next offering is one’s
choice of soup or salad.
For soup, customers can
either go the cream-based
route with the baked potato
soup, or tomato broth-based
chicken tortilla soup, which
Johannsen noted has a little
kick to it. Houlihan’s house
salad is more of a chopped
salad, for which the lettuce
is chopped finely. It has bacon,
corn and croutons, or
customers can ask for a traditional
Caesar salad.
The first two courses
lead to the entree portion.
Guests get to choose from
six options. Five of them
are served with the customer’s
choice of potato (baked,
fries or mashed), and either
green beans or asparagus.
The other one is the seared
Georges Bank scallops,
served with an asparagus
risotto. The handful of scallops
are placed on top of the
bed of risotto, and garnished
with baby arugula, a drizzle
of basil-infused olive oil
and a balsamic glaze. It’s
one of Johannsen’s favorite
dishes.
“It’s very savory, but then
you get a hint of sweetness
with the balsamic glaze,”
she said. “It’s a nice, refreshing
dish.”
The other dinner options
are panko-crusted fried
shrimp; 4-ounce center-cut
filet mignon; grilled Atlantic
salmon brushed with a
dill-butter compound and
The stuffed chicken breast, which is stuffed with a herb and garlic cream cheese, breaded,
sauteed and finished in the oven, is one of the options for Houlihan’s Valentine’s Day Four-
Meatloaf No. 9 is drizzled
Lastly, the couple gets to
share one of two dessert options:
a brownie batter cake
or the salted caramel gooey
butter cake that is topped
with vanilla bean ice cream.
Throughout the meal,
Houlihan’s features two specialty cocktails for $5 during
the four-day Valentine’s Day promotion: Adam and Eve
Appletini (left) and Cupid’s Concoction.
guests can enjoy Houlihan’s
two featured cocktails for
the three-day special at only
$5 each. The Adam and Eve
Appletini consists of an
apple-flavored schnapps,
homemade lemonade and
a cinnamon-sugar rim. The
Cupid’s Concoction has La
Marca Prosecco and French
vodka infused with organic
blood orange juice, mango
and passion fruit.
Along with Mother’s
Day and New Year’s Eve,
Johannsen said Valentine’s
Day is among the busiest
times of the year for Houlihan’s,
and its special menus
have a lot to do with it.
The dinner portion alone is
enough to satisfy one’s appetite.
“You’ll never leave here
hungry,” she said. “The
sooner you get your reservations
in, the better. We do fill
up pretty quickly.”

Distinctive Home Builders Presents Quality Built Affordable Homes
At Cedar Creek in Joliet
Why Pay Rent? New homes with the shortest build times on the market from the low $200’s
Distinctive Home Builders
recently began preconstruction
sales at Cedar
Creek in Joliet. Homeowners
there will enjoy a low-priced
quality built home and low
Joliet taxes from one of the
area’s leading home builders.
Cedar Creek is located on
Millsdale Road, one half mile
west of Rt. 53 and south of
Laraway Road. Until on-site
models are completed this
summer, interested persons
are invited to visit Distinctive
Homes Sales and Information
Center in Manhattan on Rt.
52 for details and to tour
homes.
“Handcrafted semi-custom
homes are unheard of in the
area in this price range,” said
Bryan Nooner, president of
Frankfort-based Distinctive
Home Builders. “These
homes provide a great value
and in many cases will be
less than paying rent. This
opens up home ownership
opportunities to those who
were locked out of the
market previously. Although
construction is underway,
pre-construction savings are
still available.”
Affordable, conveniently
located ranch and two-story
homes feature floor plans
ranging from 1,500 to 3,000
square feet in size with two
to four bedrooms and brick,
frame and stone exteriors.
Prices start from the low
$200’s and some home sites
back up to Cedar Creek Park.
“These homes appeal to
two markets: Empty nesters
that are downsizing with our
ranches and an outstanding
value for first time
homebuyers and families
wanting the most space for
their money,” added Nooner.
Cedar Creek school children
attend Elwood School District
203 for K – 8 and high school
age children attend Joliet
Township Central High
School within District 204,
which was recently named the
College Board’s Advanced
Placement District of the
Year. Saint Joseph Academy
is also nearby.
“We have closed the gap of
getting what you want and
getting what you need in a
new home significantly by
including additional features
that our buyers told us were
most important to them,”
said Nooner. “Now is the
best time to buy, because you
can still take advantage of
preconstruction prices that
range from the low $200s
which makes this a terrific
new home value.”
Bryan Nooner, president of
Distinctive Home Builders,
has built thousands of singlefamily
homes throughout the
south and southwest suburbs
over the past 30 years.
Distinctive Home Builders
is dedicated to giving their
customers the best home
buying experience.
Distinctive works to achieve
a home delivery goal of 90
days with zero punch list items
for its homeowners. Before
closing, each home undergoes
an industry-leading checklist
that ensures each home
measures up to the firm’s high
quality standards. Distinctive
performs numerous quality
control checks throughout
the building process and
adheres to a nearly 1,500
point formal checklist that
project managers certify.
“Having a set of
measurable, identifiable
standards that our craftsmen
are expected to maintain is
critical to upholding high
quality standards and ensures
delivering a Zero Defect
Home to our homeowners,”
according to Distinctive
president, Bryan Nooner.
During the construction
process, there are prescheduled
times set for site
visitationsatvariouslandmark
stages of construction.
Communication is an
important aspect to
maintaining an overall
positive experience during
the construction process.
Therefore, all Distinctive
customers have the Project
Manager’s e-mail address
and cell phone number, as
well as, access to the secure
online customer portal where
pictures and logs show the
continued progress on their
home. Customers have
access to the online portal
through the Distinctive
Homebuilders App that can
be easily downloaded to any
smartphone or tablet.
“Our customers simply
download our Distinctive
Home Builders app and they
are in touch with their new
home 24/7 from anywhere
in the world. The app allows
our customers to see the
progress of their home and
access all their documents at
any time” Nooner explained.
“Our customers really
appreciate the integration of
social media sites within the
app allowing them to easily
share photos and updates of
their new home with family
and friends,” he concluded.
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient.
Every home built will have
upgraded wall and ceiling
insulation values with energy
efficient windows and high
efficiency furnaces. Before
homeowners move into their
new home, Distinctive Home
Builders conducts a blower
door test that pressurizes the
home to ensure that each
home passes a set of very
stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
Cedar Creek is served by
major thoroughfares such
as IL Rte. 53, I-55 and I-80.
Locational amenities for
Cedar Creek homeowners
are two large hospital
complexes nearby: Silver
Cross Hospital and Presence
Saint Joseph Medical Center;
College education nearby
including Lewis University,
the University of St. Francis
and Joliet Junior College.
Numerous restaurants
and attractions such as the
Chicagoland Speedway, the
Joliet Splash Station and
the Haunted Trails Family
Entertainment Center,
to name a few. Visit the
Memorial Walkway at the
Abraham Lincoln National
Distinctive Home Builders Introduces New Craftsman Homes
In Manhattan and Peotone – From the mid-$200’s
New designs are a result of buyer feedback
Two refreshing designs mark
the beginning of a new series
of Craftsman-style homes
available from Distinctive Home
Builders at its latest new home
communities: Prairie Trails;
located in Manhattan within the
highly-regarded Lincoln-Way
School District and at WestGate
Manor in Peotone within
the desirable Peotone School
District.
“Craftsman homes were
introduced in the early 1900s
in California with designs
based on a simpler, functional
aesthetic using a higher level
of craftsmanship and natural
materials. These homes were a
departure from homes that were
mass produced from that era,
“according to Bryan Nooner,
president of Distinctive Home
Builders.
“The Craftsman design has
made a comeback today for
many of the same reasons it
started over a century ago. Our
customers want to live in a home
that gets away from the “mass
produced” look and live in a
home that has more character. As
a result of our daily interaction
with our homeowners and their
input, we are excited to introduce
these two homes, with additional
designs in the works.”
Nooner, who meets with
each homeowner prior to
construction, has been working
on these plans forawhile and felt
that the timing was ideal for the
debut. “Customers were asking
for something different and
simple with less monotony and
higher architectural standards.”
The result was the Craftsman
ranch and the Prairie twostory,
now available at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
The Craftsman ranch features
an open floor plan with Great
Room, three bedrooms, two
baths and a two-car (optional
three-car) garage. The Prairie
features a two-story foyer and
Great Room, three bedrooms
and one and one-half baths, a
convenient Flex Room space
on the main level and a two-car
(optional three-car) garage. The
Craftsman architectural elements
on both homes include brick and
stone exteriors with cedar shake
accent siding, low-pitched gabled
bracket roofs, front porches with
tapered columns and stone piers,
partially paned windows, and a
standard panel front entry door.
Distinctive Home Builders
offers a Craftsman-style trim
package offering trim without
ornate profiles and routers. The
trim features simplicity in design
with rectangles, straight lines and
layered look trims over doors for
example. The front entry door
will have the standard Craftsman
panel style door. Distinctive has
also created a Craftsman color
palate to assist buyers in making
coordinated choices for the
interior of their new Craftsman
home. Colors, cabinet styles and
flooring choices blend seamlessly
with the Craftsman trim package
and are available in gray tones
package and earth tones.
Distinctive offers custom maple
kitchen cabinets featuring solid
wood construction (no particle
board), have solid wood drawers
with dove tail joints, which is
very rare in the marketplace.
“When you buy a new home
from Distinctive, you truly are
receiving custom made cabinets
in every home we sell no matter
what the price range,” noted
Nooner.
Distinctive Home Builders
works to achieve a delivery goal
of 90 days with zero punch list
items for its homeowners. “Our
three decades building homes
provides an efficient construction
system,” said Nooner. “Many of
our skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company
for over 20 years. We also
take pride on having excellent
communicators throughout our
organization. This translates into
a positive buying and building
experience for our homeowners
and one of the highest referral
rates in the industry.”
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient. Every
home built will have upgraded
wall and ceiling insulation
values with energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
furnaces. Before homeowners
move into their new home,
Distinctive Home Builders
conducts a blower door test that
pressurizes the home to ensure
that each home passes a set of
very stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
With the addition of these two
new designs, there are now 15
ranch, split-level and six twostory
single-family home styles to
choose from each offering from
three to eight different exterior
elevations at both communities.
The three- to four-bedroom
homes feature one and one-half
to two-and-one-half baths, twoto
three-car garages and a family
room, all in approximately 1,600
to over 3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included in
most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new home truly
personalized to suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of the
first floor; custom maple cabinets;
ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the kitchen, baths and
foyer; genuine wood trim and
doors and concrete driveways
can all be yours at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
Most all home sites at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor
can accommodate a three-car
garage; a very important amenity
to the Manhattan homebuyer,
said Nooner.
“When we opened Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor we
wanted to provide the best new
home value for the dollar and
we feel with offering Premium
Standard Features that we do
just that. So why wait? This is
truly the best time to build your
dream home!”
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live and raise a family
featuring a 20-acre lake on site,
as well as direct access to the 22-
mile Wauponsee Glacial Prairie
Path that borders the community
and meanders through many
neighboring communities and
links to many other popular
trails. The Manhattan Metra
station is less than a mile away.
Besides Prairie Trails,
Distinctive Home Builders
has built homes throughout
Manhattan in the Butternut
Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well as in the
Will and south Cook county
areas over the past 30 years.
Distinctive Home Builders
chose the Will County village
of Peotone for its newest
community of 38 single-family
homes at WestGate Manor
within walking distance of the
esteemed Peotone High School.
Its convenient location between
Interstate 57 and Illinois Route
50 provide easy access to I-80
and commuters enjoy several
nearby train stations and a
35-minute drive to Chicago.
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Carleigh Pych
Carleigh Pych is a junior
at Lockport Township. She
was a member of the co-ed
cheerleading team that participated
in the IHSA State
Finals this past weekend.
Heading into the State
Finals, how would you
say the season has
gone?
Our last few competitions
were our best ones. We’ve
all come together and put on
a really good show. We won
the [Mahomet-Seymour]
Sectional, the Conference
[SouthWest Suburban co-ed]
and we were grand champions
at another event earlier
in the season.
You were at Providence
and on the varsity
cheer team there
the last two seasons
and now you’re at
Lockport. How has
that change been?
As a school, Lockport is
a lot bigger. It’s huge compared
to Providence. After
my freshman season,
Providence switched cheer
coaches and my sophomore
season didn’t go as planned,
so I transferred to Lockport.
How did you get involved
in cheerleading?
I was a gymnast for 14
years and I realized that floor
was my best event. So that’s
basically the same as cheer.
My first year of cheer was in
the sixth grade at Oak Prairie.
It’s the only sport I do now.
What do you say to
people who tell you that
cheer is not a sport?
I say it is, because you
have to work as a team to
succeed. There’s a family aspect
of it and it’s a lot harder
than people think it is.
Since the 2005-2006
season between Lockport,
Lemont, Sandburg,
and Lincoln-Way
East, there’s 12 state
championships and 29
trophies before last
weekend. Why do you
think the southland is
the best in the state in
cheer?
I know a lot of people that
have quit gymnastics to go
to cheer. That could be part
of it. I also think we have
the best coaches around. We
have so many good coaches.
Speaking of good
coaches, what have you
learned from Lockport
cheer coach Jenny Krumlinde?
I feel I’ve learned a lot.
She’s really helped me
with my stunt and tumbling
techniques. She’s helped
me to become a better person
too.
What do you like better,
cheering at football
games or basketball
games?
I like football better because
I like being under the
lights and all the fans.
Do you do anything to
pump yourself up before
the competitions?
Personally, before a competition,
I can’t talk to anyone
and I like to be by myself.
I do like to listen to
music. I like country music,
so I mostly listen to that.
What is your spirit
animal?
Maybe a monkey, because
of all the flips and all the
tricks a monkey would do.
What is the best thing
about being an athlete
at Lockport?
I think it has to do with
meeting a lot of great people
through cheer. I just like the
family aspect that is here.
VOTING
OPEN
Jan. 17–Feb. 10!
Lincoln-Way East senior Bryce Wyma has
been swimming since he was in elementary
the Griffins since joining them.
He has been a sectional winner and earned
accolades in the past for his work in the pool.
Now, he can add two-time Athlete of the
Wyma can call himself Athlete of the
earned the title in March 2016.
The Athlete of the Month competition pits
featured Athlete of the Week selections from
our south suburban newspapers against one
another in an online voting contest.
The next contest is to begin Sunday, Feb. 10.
To vote, visit LockportLegend.com, hover
over the “Sports” menu tab and click “Athlete
of the Month.” Readers can vote once
per session per valid email address. Voting
ends at 5 p.m. Feb. 25.
All athletes featured in the January Athlete
of the Week sports interviews are automatically
entered into the contest.
the year. That’s exactly what
she has done, as she was the
Porters’ top performer as they
cruised to the championship
of the Oswego Regional by
330 pins on Saturday, Feb. 2
at Parkside Lanes in Aurora.
It was the sixth-straight
regional title for Lockport,
which is made even better
by the fact that the regionals
have only been around for
six seasons. Before that, there
were only sectionals. The Top
4 teams from the regional
advanced to the Romeoville
Sectional, which will be held
this Saturday, Feb. 9, at Town
& Country Lanes in Joliet.
Siezega led the way in the
regional by bowling a 1,210
series for an average of nearly
202. She had a high of 245 in
Game 5. That placed her third
overall, just 37 pins behind regional
champ, senior Kendra
Anifer (1,247) from Lemont.
Plainfield East senior Kayla
Dench (1,219) was second.
“My form is better than
ever,” Siezega said. “I trust
myself more, have more confidence
and believe in myself.”
To say bowling is in Siezega’s
genes is an understatement.
Her mom, Lynda [Larson]
Siezega is the JV girls
bowling coach at Lockport
and was a member of the Porters
first bowling team in the
1985-1986 school year. Her
sister, 2013 Lockport graduate
Megan Szczepanski, is currently
an assistant boys bowling
coach at Lewis University.
Chole first bowled when she
was 3 at Strike and Spare II.
“Not really,” Chloe Siezega
said when asked if she felt
pressure because of her family’s
history with Lockport
bowling. “I look at it more
of a chance to follow in their
footsteps, not to step in their
shoes. I just look forward to
having more fun and more
success.”
While that has shown to be
true, especially this season,
Siezega has really stepped it
up as of late. She was Lockport’s
top bowler in the South-
West Suburban Conference
meet on Jan. 19 at Strike and
Spare II. Her six-game total
there of 1,294 was a career
high, and so was her opening
three-game series of 674.
“Chloe has really followed
in mom and Megan’s footsteps,”
Lockport coach Art
Cwudzinski said. “She’s peaking
at the end of the year.”
Cwudzinski hopes the rest
of the team is, too. While
Siezega had the best score
on the team, the Porters had
a trio of bowlers in the Top 8
in the regional. The other two
were junior Samantha Traina
(1,168, 7th, high of 268 in
Game 2) and junior Jessica
Ramirez (1,164, 8th, high of
234 in Game 2). Erin Kleffman
(654 in 4 games, high of
188 in Game 3) was the only
senior on the regional roster.
Junior Emilie Pleshar (563
in 3 games, high of 217 in
Game 2), freshman Isabella
Colon (337 in 2 games, high
of 172 in Game 4), freshman
Emma Punter (326, high of
169 in Game 5) and sophomore
Payton Vandenburg
(159 in Game 6) rounded out
the Porter lineup. They had an
excellent second game as a
team, bowling a 1,089. That
was their only game over
1,000, but that’s all they needed
on this day.
“The shot was pretty
tough,” Cwudzinski said
of the lane conditions. “We
bowled pretty well, and all
of the girls got a chance to
bowl.”
The Top 4 teams advance
to the sectional. Lockport
(5,581) easily finished first,
with Plainfield East (5,251),
Oswego East (5,190) and
Neuqua Valley (5,143) all
advancing. Sandburg (4,972)
placed fifth, followed by
Oswego (4,900), Lemont
(4,829), Romeoville (4,607),
Plainfield North (4,514),
Bolingbrook (4,306), East
Aurora (3,924), Waubonsie
Valley (3,855) and West Aurora
(3,774), which rounded
out the 13-team field.
“We did well on one-pin
spares,” Cwudzinski said.
“We say spares win championships,
and they did [at the
regional].”
If Lockport finishes in the
Top 4 in the sectional, it will
be making its 24th trip to the
State Finals in the 34th season
as a program.
The State Finals are held on
Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15
and 16, at The Cherry Bowl in
Rockford.
Porters show resiliency, but fall to Raiders
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
For the first 15 minutes of
last weekend’s showdown
with state-ranked Bolingbrook,
things were not going
well for the Lockport Township
boys basketball team.
The Porters, who were
coming off a pair of subpar
performances the week before,
were getting shellacked
by nearly 30 points. But senior
Aaron Grcevic kept the
faith and kept the energy
up. While Lockport didn't
complete a huge comeback,
it shaved 19 points off the
deficit in a little more than
10 minutes before eventually
falling to the Raiders by a
score of 77-63 in a SouthWest
Suburban Conference Blue
Division matchup on Friday,
Feb. 1, at Bolingbrook.
With the win, Bolingbrook
(15-6, 4-1) ended a
three-game losing streak.
The Porters (11-8, 2-3) lost
for the third straight game
but looked to be back to being
the team that they had
been the first two months of
the season in the second half.
That was in part thanks
to a spark from a couple of
bench players, especially
Grcevic.
"Aaron always does that,"
Lockport coach Brett Hespell
said of the guard coming
in and giving the team
a boost. "He's a leader out
there."
Lockport trailed 42-13
when senior post player Kameron
Leonard (5 points, 6
rebounds) hit the second of
two free throws with 1:04
to play in the first half. The
wrestling
From Page 39
Porters were looking miserable
and had only scored one
basket in the previous nine
minutes. But undaunted junior
guard Tim DiCristofano
nailed a 3-pointer with 45
seconds to play in the half.
Just 28 seconds later,
Grcevic did the same thing,
as he swished a trey. Then,
with the 'Brook holding
for the final shot, Grcevic
swooped in and got a steal.
He then sped down and converted
a perfectly timed layup
that went in as the buzzer
sounded and Lockport cut
the nearly 30-point deficit to
42-21. But the 5-foot-5 inch
Grcevic wasn't done. Being
at least five inches shorter
than any of the Raider
guards, he fearlessly pulled
up from 3-feet beyond the
top of the key and drained
another 3-pointer to open the
third quarter.
While those would be
the last points for Grcevic
(season-high 8 points) he
had provided a spark. All
of a sudden the deficit was
under 20, the Porter fans
in the crowd were stirring
and the confidence that had
been missing in the team for
nearly two-and-a-half games
returned.
"I always have to stay
ready and always have to
be ready to step in there,"
Grcevic said. "Mentally and
physically you have to be
ready to step up and stay
confident. We needed something
to get going, to build
off of. We did that in the
third quarter and got some
good things going.
"This is a good step for-
both finished third.
McCormack (24-19) lost
his first match in the quarterfinals
against Palmer but battled
back for three straight wins.
After two pins, he ran into
Palmer again in the third-place
match and got revenge when
it really mattered, recording a
ward and now we've got
to get better every game.
There's no quit in this team."
An 11-5 burst at the end of
the third quarter drew Lockport
within 53-38 after three.
Then, a 7-2 spurt opened
the fourth quarter. That was
capped on a 3-pointer by
Matt Hatzopoulos which
made the score 55-45 with
6:36 to play in the game. It
also capped a 32-13 stretch
for the Porters in just over 10
minutes.
But it wouldn't get any
closer than 10 points as the
Raiders started displaying
the talent that still makes
them the best team in the conference.
Senior guard Tyler
Cochran (12 points) scored
seven points as Bolingbrook
scored as many points as it
had in that 10 minute stretch
(13) in the next 2:30 span to
go ahead 68-50 with 3:45 to
play in the game. Lockport
never got closer than the final
score.
"You've got to give Brett
and his kids credit," Bolingbrook
coach Rob Brost said
of Hespell and the Porters.
"We knew they were a much
better team than the [first
half] score indicated. We
knew the second half would
be different. But if you
would have told me before
the game that we'd win 77-
63, I'd have taken it."
Bolingbrook's scoring
came from everywhere. Junior
guard Darius Burford
(19 points) led the way, Joseph
Yesufu (16 points) and
fellow senior guard Jordan
Myrick (9 points) along with
senior forward Tyrique Mc-
15-9 win.
Pasowisty (28-16), meanwhile,
was pinned by Landando
in the quarterfinals and
also had to win three straight
do-or-die matches.
Murrin (11 points) rounded
out five players with nine or
more points.
Hatzopoulos (15 points)
and fellow senior guard Jacob
Karli (13 points), scored
all of their points in the second
half to pace the Porters.
Senior post player Tommy
Halatek (12 points) and senior
guard Quinn Gardner (7
points) also contributed.
Lockport had early leads
of 2-0 and 4-3. The Raiders
led 12-8 with 1:59 left
in the first quarter and then
embarked on a 25-2 blitz for
37-10 lead with 3:13 left in
the first half. The advantage
eventually grew to 29 at 42-
13.
"Playing one of the best
teams in the state, we can't
come out and question ourselves,"
Hespell said. "Why
we came out [to start] and
played like we had something
to lose is a mystery to
me."
But Hespell was much
happier with his team's performance
in the second half.
"The team that we saw
in the second half was the
team that took Simeon to the
wire, Danville to the wire,"
he said. "The team that
played last week, the team
that played in the first half,
I don't know. Hopefully, in
the second half, we started
to find ourselves a little bit."
Earlier in the week, frigid
temperatures on Jan. 29
postponed the Porters game
at Joliet Central. The hope
to make up the matchup
with former coach Lawrence
Thompson, Jr. but no date
had been set.
He recorded a pair of pins
before edging Sottosanto 5-2
in the third-place match.
“All the work I put in my senior
year was for that match,”
Pasowisty said.
Lockport Boys
Baseball ready for
50th-season milestone
Max Lapthorne, Editor
Baseball was a much different
game in 1969.
Fifty years ago, Ernie
Banks earned $60,000 in the
final All-Star season of his
Hall-of-Fame career with
the Chicago Cubs, while Jon
Lester is set to make $27.5
million to lead the Cubs’
pitching staff in 2019. But
even though the game of
baseball has changed — financially
and otherwise —
one local organization has
been around to see it all happen:
Lockport Boys Baseball.
The recreational baseball
league based in Lockport
is celebrating its 50th year
providing an opportunity
for local children to experience
America’s Pastime. As
of now, there aren’t concrete
plans for an anniversary celebration,
but something is
likely in the offing, according
to CJ Phillips, VP of Operations
for Lockport Boys
Baseball.
“Fifty years ago, a group
of people got together and
said ‘hey, let’s get something
together for the kids,’” Phillips
said.
About 300-400 players
across six levels are expected
to be a part of the organization
this year, according
to Phillips. The levels range
from the 4- and 5-yearold
league called Shetland
all the way up to the Pony
league for 13- and 14-yearold
players. There are no
cuts, so anyone interested in
playing is welcome to join.
“All kids are encouraged,
all kids are welcome,” Phillips
said. “Our name is still
technically Lockport Boys
Baseball, [but] we are not
gender-specific. We do have
women coaches, we have
girls that come out and play.
Everyone is welcome.”
In recent years, Phillips
has seen participation in the
organization decline, due at
least in part to the increase
in the prevalence of travel
baseball teams. But even
with the increasing popularity
of travel baseball,
organizations like Lockport
Boys Baseball are still
valuable because they offer
leagues for players as young
as 4 years old, Phillips said.
While the younger leagues
aren’t overly competitive,
they do provide an initial
exposure to the sport that
cannot be found many other
places.
“It helps develop the kids
for the grade schools, which
then in turn feed into the
high schools at much more
competitive levels,” Phillips
said.
Lockport Boys Baseball
is run entirely by volunteers,
including Phillips. He sees
it as not only an opportunity
to teach local youths about
baseball, but also to foster an
atmosphere that allows them
to grow in all facets of their
lives.
“Seeing them grow and
develop, whether it’s a skill
or just socially, it brightens
my day,” Phillips said. “I
know a lot of other volunteer
coaches want to be around
that happiness and bring joy
to all the kids.”

Porters cheer finishes sixth at state, looks back fondly on season
Team competes in
Bloomington after
winning fourth sectional
in five years
Randy Whalen, Freelance Reporter
In the long, storied athletic history
of Lockport Township, one
program has brought home more
state trophies than any other.
That is the competitive cheerleading
team, which has eight
pieces of hardware since the IHSA
made cheer a sport in 2005-2006
season. The Porter girls bowling
team is next with seven state trophies.
Lockport hoped to bring home
its ninth state trophy last weekend,
but it wasn't to be. The Porters
performed well but placed sixth
overall in the Co-Ed Division of
the IHSA Competitive Cheerleading
Finals that were held on Friday,
Feb. 1, and Saturday, Feb.
2, at Grossinger Motors Arena in
Bloomington.
This was the Porters secondstraight
season as a co-ed team.
That's a rapidly growing division,
and they captured third place in it
last year. But a return to the podium
was not in the cards for them
this season.
"We had a rough day and had a
stunt fall," Lockport coach Jenny
Krumlinde said of the finals on
Feb. 2. "You have to be perfect
on Day No. 2 to take home a trophy.
Still, to get in the Top 10 is
awesome. Just the perseverance
the kids showed this season. They
never gave up through a lot of situations.
They all believed in each
other."
Belvidere North (96.63), which
opened as a school in the fall of
2007, won its third-straight co-ed
division championship by over
three points. It was the fourth
consecutive trophy for the Blue
Thunder, who placed second in
the same division in 2016. Plainfield
South (93.43) was second,
Grant (93.24) took third and
South Elgin (91.77) rounded out
The Porters cheerleading team finished sixth overall in the Co-Ed Division on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the IHSA
LTHS cheerleaders celebrate after finding out Friday, Feb. 1, that they qualified for the second day of the IHSA
state competition the next day.
the Top 4 teams.
Buffalo Grove (91.24), which
captured six-straight trophies,
including a trio of first-place finishes
(13, 15, and 16) between
2012-2017, placed fifth. The Porters
(89.44) were sixth, followed
by Joliet Central (85.31) Shepard
(84.56), Metea Valley (83.02) and
Lake Park (80.09), which rounded
out the Top 10.
In the preliminary session Feb.
1, Lockport was seventh (85.92).
"We were super excited going
into the first day," said Lockport
senior Aubree Peters, who's been
on varsity all four years. "We
knew our performance on Friday
really wasn't us, and we wanted to
come back stronger [in the finals].
We did, and we made a lot of corrections.
"I'll just remember all my best
friends on the team. It was still an
amazing season, and I'll never forget
the memories we made these
past four years."
Fellow senior Rachael Howard
agreed.
"We had a great season and
made a lot of good memories," she
said. "This team is so well-rounded,
and we all love each other. It
was still a great season, and the
best in my four years here."
Hannah Park is another varsity
veteran. A three-year varsity
member, she will miss it.
"It's crazy, because I've had the
best friends on the team," Park
said. "My teammates have all
been amazing. Even though we
didn't get what we wanted, we
still did very well. We all love
each other and made a lot of good
memories."
The Lockport team members
listed in the IHSA program were
Alaina Alberico, Jaida Bender,
Taylor Costello, Nicole Donnelly,
Mackenzie Everett, Wrigley
Fields, Isabella Giertuga, Howard,
Brooke Johnston, Ashley
Leeney, Jake Martinez, Park, Marissa
Pasco, Peters, Nina Piazza,
Priscilla Preciado, Carleigh Pych,
Cassandra Rasp, Alyssa Stevenson,
Gia Stramaglia, Halle Sweis
and Grady Travis. The assistant
coaches are Casey Kirkland, Lanie
Vasiliades and Dana Ziemba.
The week before, on Jan. 26,
the Porters won the title of one of
two co-ed sectionals which were
held at Mahomet-Seymour High
School with a score of 91.71. It
was the second-straight, fourth
in five years and eighth sectional
title overall for Lockport in the 14
years of the IHSA State Tournament.

state, so he was thrilled to see
the Porters dominate the tough
field.
Lockport rolled to its fifth
straight regional title Saturday,
Feb. 2, behind six individual
champions and 10 sectional
qualifiers. The Porters finished
with 242.5 points to pull away
from Providence (196) atop
the 10-team field.
Joliet West (134) was third,
followed by Lincoln-Way East
(126), Andrew (119.5) and
Lincoln-Way Central (101.5).
“Our guys believe,” Oster
said. “They’re ready to go.
Getting 10 people out of a
tough regional like this, I’m
happy with that.”
The Porters earned a spot
in the dual team sectional and
will take on Plainfield South
on Feb. 19 at a site to be announced.
Lockport senior Anthony
Molton prevailed in Saturday’s
most anticipated match.
Molton (39-3), ranked No. 3
in the state at 126 pounds by
the Illinois Wrestling Coaches
and Officials Association, beat
No. 1 Travis Ford-Melton of
Marian Catholic 3-1 in the finals.
It was a rematch of last season’s
120-pound state championship
match, which Molton
also won 7-4 in overtime.
“I knew I needed to prove
that I’ve still got it,” Molton
said.
Lockport’s Matt Ramos returned
after missing nearly a
month with a separated right
shoulder.
Ramos (28-3), ranked No.
2, pinned all three of his opponents
at 120, including
Providence’s Nick Matthias
in 1 minute, 38 seconds in the
final.
“I got to take a step back
and look things over and see
what I could work on,” Ramos
said.
Kaleb Thompson (106),
Mikey Kaminski (132), Baylor
Fernandes (160) and Brendon
Shin (285) also won titles
for Lockport.
Thompson (16-3) pinned
Andrew’s Joey Roti in 5:39,
Kaminski (25-13) won a 14-5
major decision over Joliet
West’s Nick Gantt, Fernandes
(28-4) won by technical fall
over Providence’s Aidan
O’Connor, 15-0 in 2:07, and
Shin (14-10) pinned Joliet
West’s Daniel Landando in
4:55.
Kyle Boone (2nd, 182), Andrew
Blackburn-Forst (2nd,
195), Keegan Roberson (3rd,
113) and Malik Daghash (3rd,
170) also advanced to the
Joliet Central Sectional for
Lockport.
Providence senior Jake
Lindsey, a 2016-2017 state
champion who’s been slowed
the last two seasons by a lingering
right shoulder injury,
returned after missing the
Catholic League Tournament
and looked sharp.
Lindsey (18-4), ranked No.
8 at 113, beat No. 6 Luc Valdez
of Andrew 7-1 in the finals.
Lindsey is hungry to get
back to state after failing to
qualify last season.
“It’s crazy to be at the top
winning a state title and not
even qualify a year later,” he
said.
Josh Ramos (138), Kevin
Countryman (145) and Ryan
Boersma (220) also won titles
for Providence.
Countryman (35-8) had a
dominant day, recording two
pins and a major decision. He
pinned Joliet West’s Terrance
Snapp in 1:33 in the finals.
“I watched him the matches
before and saw he shoots a lot
but he isn’t really disciplined
with his technique, so I knew
I could get him in a [headlock]
pretty easy,” Countryman said.
Josh Ramos (36-6), ranked
No. 7, pinned all three of his
opponents, including Andrew’s
Luke Gardner in 4:45
in the finals.
Boersma (39-5), ranked No.
3, had two pins before edging
Joliet Central’s Damaris Stanley
2-1.
The Celtics’ Matthias (2nd,
120), O’Connor (2nd, 160)
and Billy Meiszner (3rd, 106)
also qualified for sectionals.
Meiszner was pinned in his
first match, a quarterfinal loss
to Lincoln-Way East’s Jack
Marion, but battled back to
win three straight to advance.
He won a 13-1 major decision
over Joliet Central’s Jesus
Vasquez in the third-place
match.
“We let some matches get
away from us, but overall I
thought we did a good job,”
Providence coach Donny
Reynolds said
Countryman is happy with
how the Celtics have progressed
throughout the season.
“All year, people doubted us
because we lost a lot of seniors
from last year,” Countryman
said. “Coach Reynolds came
in and pushed us hard, taught
us how to drill and train and he
told us we could be great.”
Lincoln-Way East senior
Nick Mihajlovich (42-2),
ranked No. 4 at 182, rolled into
the finals with a pair of pins.
He then earned a 15-2 major
decision over Boone.hajlovich
was the Griffins’ only finalist,
but AJ Lizak (126), Jacob
Abeja (132) and Dominic Adamo
(152) all came through in
do-or-die third-place matches
to keep their seasons alive.
Lizak (25-18) beat Andrew’s
Jake Tanquilut 7-0,
Abeja (26-17) pinned Providence’s
Ross Heimlich in
3:33, and Adamo (32-14)
outlasted Lockport’s Anthony
Crapia 6-3.
Jake LaMonto (195), Gage
Palmer (220) and Anthony
Sottosanto (285) fell just short
of advancing, all finishing
fourth.
Lincoln-Way Central senior
Mason Sargent dug himself
out of a huge hole to win the
championship at 195 pounds.
Sargent (34-9) trailed
Blackburn-Forst 8-0 in the
third period but came up with
a pin with 1:10 left in the
match.
Sargent was the Knights’
only finalist, but he’ll be joined
at the sectional tournament by
a pair of his fellow senior upper
weights.
Mike McCormack (220)
and Chris Pasowisty (285)
