January<br />
January
January was filled with a month of w<strong>in</strong>ners: Raymond Goodman, 84 Lumber, was awarded as the 2017 Pillar Award;<br />
Lesley Hill, Sun Coast Build<strong>in</strong>g Products, was awarded the 2017 Ris<strong>in</strong>g Star Award and Yvonne Yates, Hospitality<br />
Services, was awarded the 2017 the <strong>in</strong>duction of our new HGHBA Board of Directors took place at the meet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
David Mart<strong>in</strong> was Inducted as <strong>2018</strong> HGHBA President,updated on National Association of Home Builders’ activities<br />
by speaker Marc Ellis; SC liason for NAHB. Our Association was awarded a NAHB <strong>2018</strong> Student Chapter Award<br />
for best Student Chapter for our size association.
February<br />
February is all about the <strong>2018</strong> HOME SHOW. Over 125 vendors showcased <strong>in</strong> the Myrtle Beach Convention<br />
to record attendance. The Spr<strong>in</strong>g Show guide was created to help the consumers keep track of their<br />
favorites. The HGHBA along with the Coastal Animal Rescue held a silent auction rais<strong>in</strong>g over $8000 for<br />
their charity. Several dogs and a few cats were adopted to f<strong>in</strong>d their forever homes.
March<br />
March began the month with the <strong>2018</strong> New Home Parade. 20 unique home designs were featured for public<br />
view. An app and magaz<strong>in</strong>e helped direct the consumers to the homes on two consequtive weekends.<br />
At the March meet<strong>in</strong>g Ed Byrd spoke about the Insurance and the Build<strong>in</strong>g Industry; Berkley White was<br />
awarded the Golden Hammer Award; Ed Byrd won the Volunteer of the <strong>Year</strong> award and Kelv<strong>in</strong> Causey<br />
won the Spirit of the HBA Award.
April<br />
April was for the birds with the Annual Clay Tournament and Bird Supper. 32 teams enjoyed the<br />
camaraderie, clay challenge and chow<strong>in</strong>g down on some fantastic BBQ! Raffle tickets were sold to<br />
benefit Camp Happy Days. On April 17th 17 members of the Horry Georgetown Home Builders<br />
Association attended the 48th Annual Legislative Bird Supper at the Governor’s Mansion <strong>in</strong> Columbia,<br />
SC. Legislators <strong>in</strong> attendance <strong>in</strong>cluded S.C. Senators Luke Rank<strong>in</strong> and Stephen Goldf<strong>in</strong>ch<br />
and S.C. House of Representatives Alan Clemmons, Greg Duckworth, Kev<strong>in</strong> Hardee, Jeffrey Johnson,<br />
Lee Hewitt, Lucas Atk<strong>in</strong>son, and Tim McG<strong>in</strong>nis.<br />
Home Builders Care was proud to award The Shepherds Table a $1,000 donation toward replenish<strong>in</strong>g<br />
their repaired freezer.
May<br />

June<br />
Horry-Georgetown Home Builders Association worked diligently to <strong>in</strong>crease the future workforce <strong>in</strong><br />
the build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry. One of the efforts was by promot<strong>in</strong>g non-traditional jobs for women to students<br />
at the Academy for Technology & Academics Summer CATE (Career And Technology Education)<br />
Program. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this summer program the students heard from guest speakers Wendy Markle, Commercial<br />
Roof<strong>in</strong>g Supervisor for Monarch Roof<strong>in</strong>g and Lesley Hill, Owner of Sun Coast Build<strong>in</strong>g Products<br />
& Services. Rusty Gask<strong>in</strong>s from SC Works spoke at the June 19th General Membership Meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />
about the benefits of hir<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>in</strong> the SC Works program. He serves as the communications<br />
l<strong>in</strong>k between bus<strong>in</strong>esses and the workforce development system, provides job development assistance<br />
to employers and placements for adults, dislocated workers, and youth.
July<br />
Horry Georgetown Home Builders Association and Horry-Georgetown Technical<br />
College are do<strong>in</strong>g what they canto ensure the success of the Build<strong>in</strong>g Industry that<br />
impacts all of us. The first HGTC Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of Residential Construction/Carpentry<br />
Tra<strong>in</strong> to Work Class receiv<strong>in</strong>g their certifications. Five students completed the<br />
course and are ready to get to work! This program cont<strong>in</strong>ues and you can contact<br />
HGTC at 843-477-2020 for more <strong>in</strong>formation.
August<br />
SIXTY-Two Golf Teams weathered the chance of ra<strong>in</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g the HGHBA 84 Lumber Golf Tournament! One<br />
shower did not h<strong>in</strong>der all of the fun had by all. Thanks to Our Title Sponsor - 84 Lumber! Sarah Pope, Executive<br />
Director of Oak Tree Farm Community told us about their program of provid<strong>in</strong>g hous<strong>in</strong>g for Autistic<br />
Adults to assist them <strong>in</strong> becom<strong>in</strong>g self-sufficient at the august Meet<strong>in</strong>g and they were presented a Check for<br />
$3,875 from Golf Raffle Sales. Horry Georgetown Home Builders Association sponsored the Myrtle Beach<br />
Chamber of Commerce’s Police Appreciation Breakfast for the Horry County Prec<strong>in</strong>ct on Monday, August<br />
27th. The HGHBA Ambassador Committee helped greet and show appreciation to these hard-work<strong>in</strong>g officers,<br />
detectives and adm<strong>in</strong>istrative staff!
September<br />
September
Ra<strong>in</strong> ra<strong>in</strong> go away was the chant for the entire month of September. What started out as Hurricane Florence<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ued as a deluge of steady ra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g flood<strong>in</strong>g many parts of Horry County and Georgetown Counties. To<br />
offset the ris<strong>in</strong>g waters and keep a throughfare open from Conway to Myrtle Beach the National Guard built<br />
a 4 foot wide 6 foot tall sand wall barricade down the middle of Highway 501 <strong>in</strong> front of our offices block<strong>in</strong>g<br />
us from entry. The waters rose bit the office was spared by a few <strong>in</strong>ches. Many of our members were impacted<br />
by the flood.

ecember<br />
Fall Clay Tournament was rescheduled twice due to heavy downpours. Once the sun came out the tournament<br />
was a resound<strong>in</strong>g success with 40 Clay Teams participat<strong>in</strong>g. At the Clay tournament the raffle sales<br />
raised totalled $3,240 so besides the donated $3,000 for Foster<strong>in</strong>g Hope we were able to give them an additional<br />
$240 for their children’s needs. The <strong>Year</strong> ended with plans be<strong>in</strong>g made for the Associations 50th Anniversary<br />
Celebration, look<strong>in</strong>g ahead to bright fun-filled future!
