Golden memories

Popular Marsfield residents Brian and Janet Godsell 

recently celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary. 

The couple are pictured after their marriage in St 

Mary Magdalen Church Rose Bay on February 1, 1969 

and came to their newly built home in Thelma Street

They lived there until June 2017 before re-locating 

within Marsfield to reside at Southern Cross Retirement 

Village where they enjoy life with many friends. The 

couple have three children and now nine grandchildren. 

Janet was awarded the NSW Premier’s Achievement 

Award in 2012 for her work with people diagnosed 

with dementia and running Alzheimer’s carers support 

groups. 

Brian was a long time volunteer with the St Vincent 

de Paul Society and has been playing in the Ryde City 

Concert Band for some 20 years.

Fiery Council meeting at Hunters Hill

An attempt by two Hunters Hill Liberal councillors to sack 

an independent election candidate from a local planning 

panel was shot down in a fiery exchange of words on Monday 

night. 

Deputy Mayor Ben Collins and Liberal colleague Clr Zac Miles proposed 

a motion at Monday’s council meeting to sack independent candidate 

and Emeritus Mayor Richard Quinn from the local planning panel because 

he is an employee of St Joseph’s Catholic College in Hunters Hill, which 

has a current stadium building project. 

But the motion was withdrawn when Mr Quinn presented legal advice 

in his favour from the Hon David Lloyd QC and argued that he has no 

conflict of interest because the College project is “state significant” and 

is being determined by the state government, not the panel. 

Mr Quinn then turned on the two Liberals.

Eastwood Commuter 

Car Park Hijacked! 

Dear Sir, 

As a regular visitor to 

Eastwood for business and 

leisure, I’m appalled that 

Ryde Council is attempting 

to hi-jack the government’s 

proposal for a commuter 

car park and instead for political 

reasons insist that it 

be built at West Ryde. 

This was the government’s 

commitment for the Eastwood 

community and not 

West Ryde, which no doubt 

also warrants such a facility, 

but that’s an entirely separate 

issue which should also be 

considered in future planning. 

Having a commuter car 

park at West Ryde is of no 

value whatsoever for the 

Eastwood community. 

A commuter car park at 

Eastwood would benefit local 

residents who are beyond 

walking distance from 

the station or not close to a 

convenient feeder bus route. 

It would also free up street 

parking close to the station 

for residents and their visitors. 

It’s a further example of 

Ryde Council’s disregard 

for Eastwood, by seemingly 

knocking back a gift from the 

government. 

What does that say about 

its commitment to promoting 

the development of Eastwood, 

which is bad enough 

already through its failure to 

upgrade the Town Centre 

Master Plan? 

I’m sure if it was in Macquarie 

Park, they’d have a 

completely different attitude. 

This brings us to the question 

of where a commuter car 

park in Eastwood should be 

located? 

In my view, the redevelopment 

of the Glen Street car 

park, or the Rowe Street 

East car park for that matter, 

should never have been considered 

as an option. 

Whatever development ultimately 

takes place there, 

it should be strictly reserved 

for short term shoppers and 

residents and businesses, if 

included as part of the development. 

I still believe that the original 

proposal for a multi-storey 

car park over the West Parade 

bus interchange is the 

best option. 

It was the most supported

option in the original consultation 

process, although not 

by a majority overall. 

When the options are narrowed 

down, I believe that it 

would receive majority support. 

It provides for direct under 

cover access to the station 

platforms, reduces the 

pedestrian flow across West 

Parade and also allows for 

an upgrade to the bus interchange, 

which had previously 

been promised, but never delivered. 

It’s already owned by the 

government. It ticks all the 

boxes. 

I acknowledge that there 

are potential traffic congestion 

issues associated with 

this proposal, as there would 

be anywhere else, but it deserves 

further investigation 

to see if this can be resolved.

In central Epping 

Dear Sir, 

Trying to park in or around 

Oxford Street Epping is 

nigh impossible. 

With high rise apartments 

going up all over the place, 

parking priority is given to 

builders and their vehicles: 

concrete mixers, cranes, 

trucks and the like. 

No thought has been given 

to the residents of this area 

who want to go to the shops, 

Post Office or railway station. 

The old parking restrictions 

still apply and the police enforce 

the rules with vigour. 

A further complication is the 

Station Link buses and their 

need for road space. 

In all fairness, if the builders 

can have special parking 

rights, why can’t we, the 

people who live here, have 

our parking adjusted to meet 

the new situation we find ourselves 

in. 

I should also point out that 

this parking problem is not 

just one week or one month, 

but years. 

Please have a look at the 

parking and remove the restrictions 

for those not in the 

building trade.

West Ryde traffic 

aready bad enough 

Dear Sir, 

I, unlike Karl Stewart (TWT 

30/1/19), I’m not enthused 

about the commuter car 

park at West Ryde station. 

Although I’ve only lived in 

West Ryde for 18 years, I feel 

that the traffic in the area is 

bad enough without encouraging 

more cars on the eastern 

side of the railway. 

We already have Orchard 

Road being used as a rabbit 

run to avoid Victoria Road, 

Goodwin Street is turning into 

a lethal narrow roller coaster 

street with cars accelerating 

from the roundabout Anzac 

Street to Terry Street intersection, 

avoiding Blaxland Road 

and Victoria Road. 

Ryedale Road itself is a joke 

as it’s full of bad bumps and 

pot holes, I would hope that 

some local traffic plans and 

road repairs should be done 

before the carpark is thought 

of and don’t get me started 

on the disgrace of the Woolworths 

side of West Ryde! 

Eastwood’s win is West 

Ryde’s debacle. I also know 

to protest is useless but I 

don’t have to like it either!

Mauna Loa Observatory in 

Hawaii. 

These are measurements,

Another questionable statistic, 

Mr Forbes: contribution 

of renewables to world energy 

is, you say, about 3 percent. 

But if you look at significant 

markets you see a different 

picture: the USA at 16.9 percent; 

last year, Scotland produced 

98 percent of its energy 

needs from wind power; in 

the first half of 2018, Germany 

produced enough energy 

through renewables to power 

every household in the country. 

It has set a target for its 80 

million people of 65 percent 

by 2030; Uruguay has almost 

reached 100 percent (up from 

40 percent in 2012.)

Hypocrtical Density 

Housing Code 

Dear Sir, 

I find it perplexing that the 

Labor Candidate for Ryde 

Jerome Laxale is continuing 

with his public opposition to 

the Medium Density Housing 

Code. 

It’s fair that he has his opinions 

on it but if he wants to 

stop it all he has to do is update 

his Council’s LEP and no 

longer allow for as much Medium 

Density Housing as they 

permit now. 

Furthermore, the NSW Labor 

Party did not oppose the 

Medium Density Housing 

Code when it was debated 

in Parliament, claiming that 

it was “largely inoffensive” 

because Councils including 

Ryde could voluntarily opt out 

of it. In fact Bankstown Council 

did opt out of the Code and 

updated their LEP to reduce 

the amount of Medium Density 

Housing permitted. 

If it was so easy for them, 

than how come it’s so hard for 

Ryde Council? 

If Jerome is serious about 

getting into Parliament it 

might be useful if he actually 

knew what his Labor colleagues 

policies on the Medium 

Density Housing Code 

were.

local MPs of broken promises 

OUR local politicians have been accused of broken promises and a failure 

to remove the stigma on Hunters Hill as a municipality blighted by 

radio active contamination. 

Hunters Hill’s Nelson Parade 

Action Group made the accusation 

against Ryde MP Victor 

Dominello and Lane Cove MP 

Anthony Roberts on Friday in 

response to a new $30 million 

proposal - put to a meeting of 

residents last week by Property 

NSW - to concentrate high 

and low levels of radio active 

waste in residential Nelson 

Parade and bury the concentrated 

waste under concrete. 

Although the bureaucrats regard 

the concrete option as a 

safe alternative on a contaminated 

site owned by Property 

NSW, the Action Group says 

the latest plan fails to meet 

resident demands to have the 

waste removed and thereby 

remove the stigma of Hunters 

Hill being a contaminated 

suburb. 

“Under the new plan, contamination 

would be permanently 

encapsulated in the 

street because the (combined) 

level would be higher than any 

radioactive material permanently 

stored in New South 

Wales ,” Nelson Parade Action 

Group spokesperson Philippa 

Clark said on Friday. 

“Nelson Parade residents 

are desperate for the state 

government to remove the radioactive 

material after years 

of being trapped in un-saleable 

homes, suffering anxiety 

from the stigma and ongoing 

stress from the government’s 

endless hollow promises and 

failure to resolve the issue. 

“Even children are not allowed 

to come and play here 

because their parents are worried 

the street is unsafe while 

residents suffer mocking, 

teasing and embarrassment.” 

Mr Dominello is the Minister 

responsible for Property New 

South Wales and Mr Roberts 

is the Minister for Planning 

and both bear the brunt of the 

Action Group’s anger. 

“Minister Dominello wrote 

to residents stating that they 

are committed to remediating 

the entire site by removing 

the contaminated soil down to 

bedrock,” Ms Clark said. 

“Within a month, they broke 

this promise and began planning 

encapsulation on the site. 

“This government has even 

failed in its promise to the 

people and parliament because 

in 2009 following a Parliamentary 

Inquiry, it promised 

to remove all contamination

Mr Roberts has expressed 

genuine concerns about the 

issue during exclusive interviews 

with The Weekly Times 

but has not escaped criticism. 

“Anthony Roberts has 

been our local member for 15 

years and his plan has been 

to do nothing on a Nelson 

Parade clean up for all those 

years,” Ms Clark said. 

“Under pressure of a looming 

election, he has sought 

to sweep the issue under 

the carpet with a poorly conceived 

plan to kick the issue 

to the next generations.” 

Hunters Hill Emeritus Mayor 

Richard Quinn is an Independent 

candidate for Lane 

Cove at the March election 

and has alleged the government 

will not move the waste 

to a treatment site in Western 

Sydney for political reasons. 

He said it fears a backlash 

against the Liberal vote in 

the Western Sydney marginal 

seat of Mulgoa if the socalled 

“silvertails” of Hunters 

Hill were to have their waste 

moved west. 

“The waste site at Mulgoa is 

handling more toxic contaminated 

waste on a daily basis 

including waste from overseas,” 

he said. 

“So burying the waste in 

Hunters Hill is a political decision 

by a government driven 

by politics,” he said. 

“This is a short term political 

fix, not a solution and I strongly 

believe you will not remove 

the stigma on Hunters Hill until 

you remove this hazardous 

waste.” 

Property NSW bureaucrats 

have previously stressed 

that their actions have been 

driven by a desire to find the 

best and safest outcomes but 

Philippa Clarke agrees with 

Mr Quinn. 

“Their plan to encapsulate 

under concrete is driven by 

political considerations and 

the brief to Property NSW was 

to find the solution with the 

least political pain.” 

“There was no expert informed 

decision making, no 

solution driven by environmental 

priorities, no meaningful 

community consultation 

but only a plan that politicians 

thought would get them 

through this election without 

media attention.” 

Hunters Hill Council’s position 

is that the radio active 

material must be removed 

and Ms Clark said the Council 

has been snubbed. 

“The government showed 

no evidence of listening to the 

majority of residents who disagreed 

with them and ignored 

Hunters Hill Council’s unanimous 

rejection of the plan of 

encapsulation. 

“The government has 

shown complete disregard for 

Hunters Hill Council whose 

Zoning Regulations clearly do 

not allow industrial structures 

to be constructed in a residential 

street.” 

“Their plan is a very costly 

option allocating $30 million 

of taxpayer money to build 

the encapsulation cell, an option 

estimated by experts to 

be much more expensive than 

off site disposal in an appropriately 

licensed facility.”

tobacco.

hosted Monday night’s Eastwood Chamber of Commerce meeting at Club 

Eastwood. 

Chamber members inspected one of Stryder’s 

fleet of eleven vehicles parked outside the club 

before being addressed by Stryder chairman Ian

options including the Rowe Street East car park 

update, a new public plaza and community facilities 

following the demolition of Glen Street 

car park and a larger alternative Shaftsbury Road

Bernard Purcell were also present. Members and 

guests were welcomed by Club President Ray

Traffic, Parking and a New Car Park 

in Eastwood 

In 2018, the City of Ryde commissioned a Traffic and 

Parking Study for Eastwood. At its meeting on 11 December 

2018, Council resolved to place the Draft Summary Report 

Eastwood Traffic and Parking study on exhibition along 

with a concept for a new car park option. 

The concepts being developed look to relocate the 

existing Glen Street car park to the Shaftsbury Road 

Precinct and create a public plaza and community facility 

in its place. This would create a more vibrant open space 

for the community, with facilities that could include a new 

community hall, youth space and an occasional childcare 

centre. 

Prior to any studies taking place, Council would like to 

know if the community support the concept of the new 

car park. The results of the consultation will be reported 

to Council for endorsement and funding to progress 

further with this project, which will include planning 

considerations, investigative studies, environmental 

and stormwater considerations, detailed design and an 

approvals process prior to any works.

this arts/media graduate from Macquarie Uni is also

Jack won the Sydney chess championship at the 

age of 19. 

“Chess is a family tradition. It started with my grandpa. 

I first beat dad when I was 8. I’m currently doing 

Blitz Chess - where players get to checkmate in 5 

minutes. It’s like tennis with your eyes closed.” 

“My calling is definitely in the entertainment industry 

and in chess. I don’t belong in the office. At some 

point, I know I’m going to need to take some risks 

while still young.”

Volunteer teachers and helpers are needed for English 

classes at Eastwood Uniting Church, corner Lakeside 

& Hillview roads, Eastwood - close to railway station. 

The classes are for newcomers to the community who 

need assistance with understanding and speaking English 

and to offer them a welcoming place to meet others. 

Greatest need is for classes held on Monday mornings 

from 9.30am to 11am. They have large numbers of students 

of varying levels of English competence with several 

classes, each led by a team of teachers and helpers.

Denistone residents oppose development plan 

ALMOST one hundred residents from Denistone 

and West Ryde voiced concern about a 

proposed “overdevelopment” during a public 

meeting at the Denistone Sports Club last week. 

The development is 

for 68 - 70 Chatham 

Road in Denistone 

and will require the 

demolition of the two 

existing homes at 

68 and 70 Chatham 

Road to be replaced 

by four double storey 

homes. 

These homes will 

include one four 

bedroom double storey 

home, one three 

bedroom double 

storey home as well 

as two single storey 

homes and three 

bedroom homes with 

parking on a swivel 

roundabout. 

The angry residents 

said nine mature 

trees will also be removed 

to enable the 

development to occupy 

more than 70 

per cent of the site. 

“The foundations of 

the development will 

have a major impact 

on adjacent neighbours’ 

trees as well 

as interfere with or 

cause undue shadowing 

on a number 

of sites,” the residents 

said. 

“The development 

is not within the 

designated Denistone 

Character Area 

guidelines as to 

street ambience and 

size on the street and 

on the land size.” 

“The multi dwelling 

conjoined development 

is seen as not 

representative of 

the character area 

spread across two 

lots with four large 

residences. 

“The voice of the 

meeting was a re- 

sounding NO to the 

development.”

“After looking up the coast 

and down the coast, as you 

do, we decided we still loved 

Macquarie Park,” said John 

with a lingering Canadian accent. 

“Location is a big reason why 

we are here.” 

“We have a big yard for the 

grandkids to play in. I have 

my little garden. The beautiful 

surrounds really are lovely and 

very well kept. You have all the 

great facilities here, and you’re 

at the heart of the community, 

not just the village,” said John. 

“It’s a ten minute walk to the 

train station. We can get a bus 

to almost anywhere. We’ve 

downsized from two to one 

car, so it’s great having public 

transport right to the door.” 

Closer to home, The Hub, the 

Village caf,, has that palpable 

sense of connection. 

As a key player in the Resident’s 

Committee (Treasurer) 

John said it was consciously 

created to allow residents to 

come together. 

“It’s the centre of activity - a 

bit like going with my grandmother 

down to the village 

shop when I was a kid in Canada. 

We’ve recreated that.” 

“Any given day residents can 

have a free cuppa, a biscuit 

and socialise,” said John. 

“While we have a dedicated 

activity planner, as some people 

get older they get a little 

more inward. They might not 

come out for an activity, but 

they’ll come out for a cuppa.” 

The Wellar’s also appreciate 

access to care in their retirement 

decision. 

“It’s important to us, driven 

by my own personal experience 

with my parents in Canada,” 

said John. 

“I’m eight years older than 

my wife. At 72, if my health 

happened to deteriorate we 

could remain in the same community, 

but I would be in residential 

care.”

SYDNEY Cricket Club has shown it has the batting depth 

to be a force in the 2018-19 NSW Premier Cricket first grade 

finals series. 

The Tigers produced 

a runfest at the Village 

Green in Kensington 

last Saturday 

when they posted 

5-410 on the opening 

day of their clash with 

University of NSW. 

Highlight were the 

magnificent unbeaten 

centuries by Steve Eskinazi 

(179 not out) and 

keeper batsman Beau 

McClintock (109 not out) 

and classy 84 from the 

consistent number three 

Anthony Mosca. 

It follows the prolific 

run scoring of recent 

centurions Matthew 

Rodgers and Kent recruit 

Zak Crawley, who both 

missed out with the bat 

against the Students. 

Middlesex import Eskinazi 

has proved a real 

find for the Tigers this 

summer with 660 runs to 

date in his debut season 

at a healthy average of 

60.0. 

Last weekend’s ton 

against University was 

Steve’s second for Sydney 

over the past fortnight 

and his best knock 

since joining the club last 

October. 

The dashing Eskinazi 

hammered two sixes and 

22 boundaries during his 

epic 257 ball innings and 

featured in two significant 

partnerships after 

a rocky start from the Tigers 

top order. 

Rodgers was dismissed 

for a first ball 

duck before NSW U/19s 

rep Liam Scott (6) and 

Crawley (2) followed suit 

- all victims of University 

quick Declan White (3-98 

off 21 overs) as the Tigers 

slumped to be 3-33 

in the opening session 

after winning the toss. 

Eskinazi and Mosca 

carved out a crucial 

fourth wicket partnership 

of 125 before the 

Englishman added a 

further 213 runs in an 

unbroken sixth wicket 

stand with wicket keeper 

McClintock. 

The fast developing 

McClintock has proved 

a capable foil - he faced 

115 balls and clouted 

ten boundaries and two

BALMAIN Under 16 junior representative rugby league team served notice that they’ll 

be a force to be reckoned with in this year’s Harold Matthews Cup competition after 

trouncing St George 46-6 last Saturday at Mascot Oval.

RYDE EASTWOOD Leagues Club recognises that drought-affected 

NSW farming communities have been doing it really tough lately.

Therefore, the club decided 

to lend its support 

to their cause by working 

with Rural Aid Australia 

to coordinate the first of 

two hay drop donations. 

The destination for the 

first hay drop was Pallal, 

located five minutes 

south west of Bingara in 

the New England region. 

On January 13, the first 

two trailer loads of hay 

were delivered to local 

Pallal farmers Georgie 

and Bruce Butler, who 

then dispersed the 1,500 

kilograms of hay to six 

other local farms in the 

region. 

Ryde-Eastwood 

Leagues Club CEO Carl 

Pozzato said the drought 

has caused so many issues 

for those affected 

including tough decisions 

on livestock and 

caring for sick animals, 

a lack of feed sources, 

not to mention the effect 

on families and the wider 

community. 

“Every hay bale counts 

and the club’s initial 

$25,000 contribution, including 

all transportation 

costs, saw local farmers 

receive approximately 

eleven bales of hay 

each,” Carl added, 

Club President Jim Mc- 

Clymont says: “I think it’s 

really important for clubs 

like Ryde-Eastwood to 

get behind the cause of 

helping the farmers in 

their time of need. The 

club has committed to 

further donations in support 

of the farmers and 

hopefully our contribution 

will help ease the plight 

faced by those droughtaffected 

communities.” 

Ryde-Eastwood 

Leagues Club has 

worked closely in tandem 

with charity organisation 

Rural Aid Australia, which 

was founded in 2015 to 

provide a central point of 

focus for rural communities 

who require assistance. 

The club is also currently 

reviewing other 

initiatives to support the 

New England North West 

communities.
