The Weekly Times - TWT - 13th February 2019

The Weekly Times - TWT - cheekily describes itself as a campaigning, crusading, truth-seeking, death defying, Aussie battler-aligned, one-eyed-Tiger-led news organisation dedicated to Sydney's north west. It's one of the few remaining independently run community newspapers and turns 100 years old in 2021 - so if you want to show your support for independent media, have a quick look at the paper, submit a letter to the editor via its website or like or share one of its posts on social media. The flip book - or digital edition/replica - of the 6th February 2019 edition of TWT can be reached here: https://weeklytimes.com.au/the-weekly-times-twt-13th-February-2019/ And the most current edition of TWT is always reachable using this short address: bit.ly/OurTWT

WIN! with TWT!
King of Thieves crime film
Ten TWT readers can win double passes to the British crime movie
King of Thieves to be released nationally by independent film distributor
Studio Canal on February 28.
A famous thief in his
younger years, widower
Brian Reader (Michael
Caine), 77 years of age,
pulls together a band of
misfit criminals to plot
an unprecedented burglary
at the Hatton Garden
Safe Deposit. The
thieves, all aged in their
60s and 70s except for
one, employ their oldschool
thieving skills to
plan the heist over the
Easter holiday weekend.
Posing as servicemen,
they enter the deposit,
neutralise the alarms and
proceed to drill a hole
into the wall of the safe.
Two days later, they
manage to escape worth
allegedly over £200 million
worth of stolen jewels
and money.
When police are called
to the scene and investigation
starts, the cracks
between the misfit gang
members begin to show
as they row over how to
share the goods and become
increasingly distrustful
of each other.
Meanwhile, the crime
has become public
knowledge, and a frenzy
of speculations begin.
As details about the
crime come to light, both
the British public and the
media are captivated,
and the investigation
is followed with bated
breath around the world
until the criminals are
eventually captured.
Fiery Council meeting at Hunters Hill
BY OUR CIVIC ROUNDSMAN
An attempt by two Hunters Hill Liberal councillors to sack
an independent election candidate from a local planning
panel was shot down in a fiery exchange of words on Monday
night.
Deputy Mayor Ben Collins and Liberal colleague Clr Zac Miles proposed
a motion at Monday’s council meeting to sack independent candidate
and Emeritus Mayor Richard Quinn from the local planning panel because
he is an employee of St Joseph’s Catholic College in Hunters Hill, which
has a current stadium building project.
But the motion was withdrawn when Mr Quinn presented legal advice
in his favour from the Hon David Lloyd QC and argued that he has no
conflict of interest because the College project is “state significant” and
is being determined by the state government, not the panel.
Mr Quinn then turned on the two Liberals.
Historic ‘Addington’ Open Day This Sunday 2pm
Vicious attack on former mayor
& Independent State candidate
“Either councillors Collins and Miles are totally their motion was motivated by a recent and allegedly
“inappropriate” speech Mr Quinn made to the
ignorant of how the planning system works or their
motive is a deliberate attempt to smear my reputation
and the good standing of my workplace since “If you can’t see that then I can’t see what we’re
council in support of the College proposal.
the announcement that I intend to contest the seat doing here!” Clr Miles said.
of Lane Cove as an independent candidate and I Councillor Elizabeth Krassoi hit back at Clr Miles
believe it is the latter,” he said.
and said she felt “ashamed and embarrassed” by
“For years I and other councillors fought to keep the motion which Clr Ross Williams described as
petty party politics out of this council and what we an attempt to drag the reputation of one of Hunters
are seeing now is petty party politics at its worst.” Hill’s leading citizens through the mud.
And it only got worse for the two Liberals when Councillor Justine McLaughlin later lashed out
Mayor Mark Bennett lectured them on ethics. at the two Liberals for other “degrading” political
“If you question a man’s integrity you must be motions.
100 per cent right,” Mayor Bennett told them. “You’re asking us to support a motion to condemn
a Labor policy we haven’t seen, you attack
“And you are not right. You have made a mistake
and people will remember this.”
an independent candidate and you praise a Liberal
Emeritus Mayor Quinn last week quit the Liberal MP for splashing the cash before an election,” she
Party to run against Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts
said.
Eastwood Commuter
Car Park Hijacked!
Dear Sir,
As a regular visitor to
Eastwood for business and
leisure, I’m appalled that
Ryde Council is attempting
to hi-jack the government’s
proposal for a commuter
car park and instead for political
reasons insist that it
be built at West Ryde.
This was the government’s
commitment for the Eastwood
community and not
West Ryde, which no doubt
also warrants such a facility,
but that’s an entirely separate
issue which should also be
considered in future planning.
Having a commuter car
park at West Ryde is of no
value whatsoever for the
Eastwood community.
A commuter car park at
Eastwood would benefit local
residents who are beyond
walking distance from
the station or not close to a
convenient feeder bus route.
It would also free up street
parking close to the station
for residents and their visitors.
It’s a further example of
Ryde Council’s disregard
for Eastwood, by seemingly
knocking back a gift from the
government.
What does that say about
its commitment to promoting
the development of Eastwood,
which is bad enough
already through its failure to
upgrade the Town Centre
Master Plan?
I’m sure if it was in Macquarie
Park, they’d have a
completely different attitude.
This brings us to the question
of where a commuter car
park in Eastwood should be
located?
In my view, the redevelopment
of the Glen Street car
park, or the Rowe Street
East car park for that matter,
should never have been considered
as an option.
Whatever development ultimately
takes place there,
it should be strictly reserved
for short term shoppers and
residents and businesses, if
included as part of the development.
I still believe that the original
proposal for a multi-storey
car park over the West Parade
bus interchange is the
best option.
It was the most supported
Letters to the Editor
option in the original consultation
process, although not
by a majority overall.
When the options are narrowed
down, I believe that it
would receive majority support.
It provides for direct under
cover access to the station
platforms, reduces the
pedestrian flow across West
Parade and also allows for
an upgrade to the bus interchange,
which had previously
been promised, but never delivered.
It’s already owned by the
government. It ticks all the
boxes.
I acknowledge that there
are potential traffic congestion
issues associated with
this proposal, as there would
be anywhere else, but it deserves
further investigation
to see if this can be resolved.
Abandoning a commuter car
park for Eastwood should not
be an option.
RAY LAVERACK
Epping
Impossible parking
In central Epping
Dear Sir,
Trying to park in or around
Oxford Street Epping is
nigh impossible.
With high rise apartments
going up all over the place,
parking priority is given to
builders and their vehicles:
concrete mixers, cranes,
trucks and the like.
No thought has been given
to the residents of this area
who want to go to the shops,
Post Office or railway station.
The old parking restrictions
still apply and the police enforce
the rules with vigour.
A further complication is the
Station Link buses and their
need for road space.
In all fairness, if the builders
can have special parking
rights, why can’t we, the
people who live here, have
our parking adjusted to meet
the new situation we find ourselves
in.
I should also point out that
this parking problem is not
just one week or one month,
but years.
Please have a look at the
parking and remove the restrictions
for those not in the
building trade.
West Ryde traffic
aready bad enough
Dear Sir,
I, unlike Karl Stewart (TWT
30/1/19), I’m not enthused
about the commuter car
park at West Ryde station.
Although I’ve only lived in
West Ryde for 18 years, I feel
that the traffic in the area is
bad enough without encouraging
more cars on the eastern
side of the railway.
We already have Orchard
Road being used as a rabbit
run to avoid Victoria Road,
Goodwin Street is turning into
a lethal narrow roller coaster
street with cars accelerating
from the roundabout Anzac
Street to Terry Street intersection,
avoiding Blaxland Road
and Victoria Road.
Ryedale Road itself is a joke
as it’s full of bad bumps and
pot holes, I would hope that
some local traffic plans and
road repairs should be done
before the carpark is thought
of and don’t get me started
on the disgrace of the Woolworths
side of West Ryde!
Eastwood’s win is West
Ryde’s debacle. I also know
to protest is useless but I
don’t have to like it either!
Agreement?
Dear Sir,
Viv Forbes argues for leaving
the Paris Climate Agreement.
What have we got
to lose if thescience, as he
states, “is not settled?”
If we expand the use of solar
and wind and hydro in producing
electricity, won’t we
end up with a cleaner environment
as the use of coal decreases?
Surely, it’s win, win?
Coal is not renewable –
GENERAL MANAGER
once dug up, it’s gone.
As to scientific consensus
– between 91 and 97 percent
of reputable scientists agree
that we humans are causing
the increases in temperature
through pumping increasing
amounts of carbon dioxide
into the atmosphere. (A simple
check on Google will confirm
this.)
Yes, this gas is essential
for the growth of plants. But
it traps heat which would,
under other circumstances,
dissipate. Ask the good folk
of Tuvalu what this is going to
mean for them right now and
in the immediate future.
As to so-called computer
predictions. Let me quote
from an international report:
“Every one of the past 40
years has been warmer than
the 20th century average.
2016 was the hottest year on
record. The 12 warmest years
on record have all occurred
since 1998.
Over the past 130 years, the
global average temperature
has increased 1.5 degrees
Fahrenheit, with more than
half of that increase occurring
over only the past 35 years.
Detailed measurements of
atmospheric carbon dioxide
(CO2) levels have been taken
continuously since the late
1950s. The data show that
CO2 levels have steadily increased
every year. In 2017,
they were28 percent higher
than in 1959, the year CO2
measurements began at the
Mauna Loa Observatory in
Hawaii.
These are measurements,
not predictions!
Another questionable statistic,
Mr Forbes: contribution
of renewables to world energy
is, you say, about 3 percent.
But if you look at significant
markets you see a different
picture: the USA at 16.9 percent;
last year, Scotland produced
98 percent of its energy
needs from wind power; in
the first half of 2018, Germany
produced enough energy
through renewables to power
every household in the country.
It has set a target for its 80
million people of 65 percent
by 2030; Uruguay has almost
reached 100 percent (up from
40 percent in 2012.)
The list goes on.
Mr Forbes’ second last
paragraph is just so much unproven
guff.
Unless we take active steps
now, our grandchildren may
have lots of green foliage to
admire assuming the floods
and fires haven’t destroyed
them first and the lower parts
of our cities haven’t disappeared
under the waves.
Hypocrtical Density
Housing Code
Dear Sir,
I find it perplexing that the
Labor Candidate for Ryde
Jerome Laxale is continuing
with his public opposition to
the Medium Density Housing
Code.
It’s fair that he has his opinions
on it but if he wants to
stop it all he has to do is update
his Council’s LEP and no
longer allow for as much Medium
Density Housing as they
permit now.
Furthermore, the NSW Labor
Party did not oppose the
Medium Density Housing
Code when it was debated
in Parliament, claiming that
it was “largely inoffensive”
because Councils including
Ryde could voluntarily opt out
of it. In fact Bankstown Council
did opt out of the Code and
updated their LEP to reduce
the amount of Medium Density
Housing permitted.
If it was so easy for them,
than how come it’s so hard for
Ryde Council?
If Jerome is serious about
getting into Parliament it
might be useful if he actually
knew what his Labor colleagues
policies on the Medium
Density Housing Code
were.
ANGLICAN PARISH of
Sunday February 24 in
All Saints Church hall,
Ambrose Street, Hunters
Hill from 2.30pm to
4.30pm.
The Parish often hosts
such forums as part of its
regular series of seminars
called ‘Soundings.’
Soundings has a long
history within the Parish,
seeking to link contemporary
issues of the day with the
teachings of Jesus.
Soundings is therefore an
appropriate place for the
people of Hunters Hill to
meet with those who would
seek to represent us and
hear their views on a range
of issues and ask questions
about the way they intend to
represent us if elected.
CANDIDATES FROM
the Liberal Party (Trent
Zimmerman MP), the Labor
To The POINT
with Rev MICHAEL ARMSTRONG
Party (Brett Stone) and the
Greens (candidate yet to be
announced) have committed
to come and participate in
the forum.
Mrs Alice Oppen OAM,
who has convened many of
these forums, says that the
opportunity to participate in
our democracy and to ask
questions of those who seek
to represent us, is crucial if
we desire for candidates to
truly reflect our views and
to offer real leadership on
issues that matter.
* * *
MRS OPPEN further
reflected that previous
forums have been wonderful
opportunities to raise local,
national and international
issues with candidates and
to cut through some of
the rhetoric that we often
hear in media grabs and to
see and hear for ourselves
how well the candidate
may share our views and
therefore represent us in the
parliament.
I was asked about this
forum being hosted with the
Church and said Jesus never
backed away from raising
political issues with those in
power and as the Church we
too are concerned for those
who are especially poor,
marginalised or unable to
speak.
I believe these forums
are a great gift to our local
community and we seek to
host them in a manner that
is respectful to all, which we
know therefore allows the
candidates to speak with
further freedom and passion
than what they may do in
other forums.
Hunters Hill group accuses our
local MPs of broken promises
OUR local politicians have been accused of broken promises and a failure
to remove the stigma on Hunters Hill as a municipality blighted by
radio active contamination.
Hunters Hill’s Nelson Parade
Action Group made the accusation
against Ryde MP Victor
Dominello and Lane Cove MP
Anthony Roberts on Friday in
response to a new $30 million
proposal - put to a meeting of
residents last week by Property
NSW - to concentrate high
and low levels of radio active
waste in residential Nelson
Parade and bury the concentrated
waste under concrete.
Although the bureaucrats regard
the concrete option as a
safe alternative on a contaminated
site owned by Property
NSW, the Action Group says
the latest plan fails to meet
resident demands to have the
waste removed and thereby
remove the stigma of Hunters
Hill being a contaminated
suburb.
“Under the new plan, contamination
would be permanently
encapsulated in the
street because the (combined)
level would be higher than any
radioactive material permanently
stored in New South
Wales ,” Nelson Parade Action
Group spokesperson Philippa
Clark said on Friday.
“Nelson Parade residents
are desperate for the state
government to remove the radioactive
material after years
of being trapped in un-saleable
homes, suffering anxiety
from the stigma and ongoing
stress from the government’s
endless hollow promises and
failure to resolve the issue.
“Even children are not allowed
to come and play here
because their parents are worried
the street is unsafe while
residents suffer mocking,
teasing and embarrassment.”
Mr Dominello is the Minister
responsible for Property New
South Wales and Mr Roberts
is the Minister for Planning
and both bear the brunt of the
Action Group’s anger.
“Minister Dominello wrote
to residents stating that they
are committed to remediating
the entire site by removing
the contaminated soil down to
bedrock,” Ms Clark said.
“Within a month, they broke
this promise and began planning
encapsulation on the site.
“This government has even
failed in its promise to the
people and parliament because
in 2009 following a Parliamentary
Inquiry, it promised
to remove all contamination
Hunters Hill Emeritus Mayor and Independent candidate
for Lane Cove Richard Quinn joined local environmental
activist Philippa Clark at Nelson Parade on Friday where
he spoke out against what he said was a state government
failure to remove radioactive waste from the
street’s contaminated site. TWT on-the-spot PHOTO.
but has chosen to do nothing
for 10 years.”
Mr Roberts has expressed
genuine concerns about the
issue during exclusive interviews
with The Weekly Times
but has not escaped criticism.
“Anthony Roberts has
been our local member for 15
years and his plan has been
to do nothing on a Nelson
Parade clean up for all those
years,” Ms Clark said.
“Under pressure of a looming
election, he has sought
to sweep the issue under
the carpet with a poorly conceived
plan to kick the issue
to the next generations.”
Hunters Hill Emeritus Mayor
Richard Quinn is an Independent
candidate for Lane
Cove at the March election
and has alleged the government
will not move the waste
to a treatment site in Western
Sydney for political reasons.
He said it fears a backlash
against the Liberal vote in
the Western Sydney marginal
seat of Mulgoa if the socalled
“silvertails” of Hunters
Hill were to have their waste
moved west.
“The waste site at Mulgoa is
handling more toxic contaminated
waste on a daily basis
including waste from overseas,”
he said.
“So burying the waste in
Hunters Hill is a political decision
by a government driven
by politics,” he said.
“This is a short term political
fix, not a solution and I strongly
believe you will not remove
the stigma on Hunters Hill until
you remove this hazardous
waste.”
Property NSW bureaucrats
have previously stressed
that their actions have been
driven by a desire to find the
best and safest outcomes but
Philippa Clarke agrees with
Mr Quinn.
“Their plan to encapsulate
under concrete is driven by
political considerations and
the brief to Property NSW was
to find the solution with the
least political pain.”
“There was no expert informed
decision making, no
solution driven by environmental
priorities, no meaningful
community consultation
but only a plan that politicians
thought would get them
through this election without
media attention.”
Hunters Hill Council’s position
is that the radio active
material must be removed
and Ms Clark said the Council
has been snubbed.
“The government showed
no evidence of listening to the
majority of residents who disagreed
with them and ignored
Hunters Hill Council’s unanimous
rejection of the plan of
encapsulation.
“The government has
shown complete disregard for
Hunters Hill Council whose
Zoning Regulations clearly do
not allow industrial structures
to be constructed in a residential
street.”
“Their plan is a very costly
option allocating $30 million
of taxpayer money to build
the encapsulation cell, an option
estimated by experts to
be much more expensive than
off site disposal in an appropriately
licensed facility.”

Wednesday 13 February, 2019 THE WEEKLY TIMES 7
Millions for Healthy Harold so youth can make healthier choices
LIFE Education and its recognisable
ambassador ‘Healthy Harold’ will continue
delivering its healthy lifestyle
message locally, courtesy of a recent
funding boost by the NSW Government.
Chairman of Life Education
Ryde, Hunters
Hill and Canada Bay, Vic
Tagg, said the renewed
funding would allow Life
Education’s programs to
be delivered using cutting
edge technology.
“It will also allow the
programs to evolve with
the changing times to focus
on the most critical
areas in terms of educating
our youth,” Mr Tagg
told The Weekly Times.
“We appreciate the
strong support shown
by NSW Premier Gladys
Berejiklian, Ryde MP Victor
Dominello and Drummoyne
MP John Sidoti.
“It’s good news because
we can continue our work
educating local children
to empower them to
make better lifestyle decisions.”
The NSW Liberals &
Nationals have committed
a record $2 million in
funding for Life Education
NSW and its 31 mobile
education vans, guaranteeing
the not-for-profit
organisation, which turns
40 this year, will continue
to educate the next generation
of young students.
Premier Berejiklian said
Healthy Harold and the
Life Education experience
has become a rite of
passage in many primary
schools and this funding
would allow them to
modernise their program
by providing students
access to cutting-edge
augmented reality and 3D
systems.
“Life Education is as important
now as it has ever
been. With boundless entertainment
options in the
digital age it is essential
that important life lessons
for children are delivered
in an engaging and captivating
way,” Ms Berejiklian
said.
“It is so important that
there is a platform like
Life Education that reaches
students on their level
and helps educate them
about the choices they
will face.”
The new funding will assist
with teaching young
primary school students
about issues including
sun safety, road safety,
and healthy eating.
For older students in
Year 6, it will help them
begin to tackle the complex
issues they will face
in high school, such as
cyber safety and the dangers
of drugs, alcohol and
tobacco.
Education Minister Rob
Stokes said Life Education
was a priceless asset
to teachers delivering important
lessons on sometimes
sensitive issues.
“Life Education consults
with local schools to
ensure they cover the topics
that may impact that
particular school community.
The fact that this service
is run in conjunction
with schools means the
lessons have a greater
chance of really reaching
students,” he said.
Do you suffer from knee pain?
Here are some questions
that are often asked at
West Ryde Physiotherapy
clinical practice by older
patients:
Should I get a scan for
my knee pain?
Knee osteoarthritis and
painful knees can lead to
limited levels of activity
and confidence in walking
and balance.
Lately there has been
great emphasis on decreasing
investigations
because it may not change
the treatment outcomes.
For example, Meniscal
tears occur in 63 per cent
among those with knee
pain on most days and
60 per cent among those
without a tear.
Should I have surgery for
my knee Osteoarthritis?
Having surgery is not
your only option, regardless
how severe the
changes are in your joint.
Debunking the myths
about osteoarthritis is valuable
in any of our treatment
approach: Pain does
not mean damage, rest will
not help, and exercise is
not dangerous.
What can I do to help my
knee pain?
By tailoring the exercise
program, the structures in
the knee joint will adapt to
the given load, the mus-
Seniors Party candidates
The Seniors United Party of Australia (SUPA)
will field 15 candidates for the Legislative Council
in the March election.
Party Leader and
chairman Chris Osborne
said four of the candidates
were women and
there was also a strong
multicultural presence.
Mr Osborne said the
canvassing of older
people in the community
had identified a number
of key issues which had
influenced the party’s
election platform.
These include increased
accountability
for politicians; registered
nurses around
the clock in all nursing
homes as well as a
minimum staff to resident
ratio and minimum
qualifications for aged
care staff; less money
for stadiums and more
for hospitals and dental
services for age pensioners
and low income
self funded retirees; the
reduction of health waiting
lists; better co-ordination
of palliative care
programs; more social
housing, especially for
older women and retirement
village legislation
reform.
cles will get stronger, and
the levels of function will
improve, leading to an improved
quality of life.
Here are our top three exercises
for knee pain:
• Sit to stand: choose a
sturdy chair, place your
feet hip width apart, crossing
your arms, get up from
the chair and sit back
down, using the least help
possible from your hands.
• Knee extensions:
Straighten your leg while
sitting on a chair, holding
for 10 seconds, repeat.
• Calf raise: raise up
on your toes, perform as
Performing an individualised
Traffic, Parking and a New Car Park
in Eastwood
In 2018, the City of Ryde commissioned a Traffic and
Parking Study for Eastwood. At its meeting on 11 December
2018, Council resolved to place the Draft Summary Report
Eastwood Traffic and Parking study on exhibition along
with a concept for a new car park option.
The concepts being developed look to relocate the
existing Glen Street car park to the Shaftsbury Road
Precinct and create a public plaza and community facility
in its place. This would create a more vibrant open space
for the community, with facilities that could include a new
community hall, youth space and an occasional childcare
centre.
Prior to any studies taking place, Council would like to
know if the community support the concept of the new
car park. The results of the consultation will be reported
to Council for endorsement and funding to progress
further with this project, which will include planning
considerations, investigative studies, environmental
and stormwater considerations, detailed design and an
approvals process prior to any works.
BY JUSTIN LI
Born and bred in Eastwood, 22 year old Jack Rodgers
has both brains and brawn. Aside from his day job
as a professional social media influencer marketer,
this arts/media graduate from Macquarie Uni is also
an athlete, dancer, actor, singer, and runs a chess
coaching business.
Jack won the Sydney chess championship at the
age of 19.
“Chess is a family tradition. It started with my grandpa.
I first beat dad when I was 8. I’m currently doing
Blitz Chess - where players get to checkmate in 5
minutes. It’s like tennis with your eyes closed.”
“My calling is definitely in the entertainment industry
and in chess. I don’t belong in the office. At some
point, I know I’m going to need to take some risks
while still young.”
The “Clear margin” in skin
cancer surgery explained
By Dr Peter Kim
Surgery is the
treatment of choice
for about 10 percent
of the skin
cancers.
When skin cancer
is removed, it is
then sent for histopathology
where
the specimen is examined
under the
microscope.
The pathologist
confirms the diagnosis
and they will
state whether the
specimen has a
“clear margin” or
not.
The “clear margin”
is a medical
term used to describe
whether any
of the edges of the
skin specimen has
cancer or not.
If the cancer is not
visible at the edges
of the skin specimen
(both horizontally
and vertically),
it is deemed
Basal Cell Cancer
of the nose @ Eastwood
Skin Cancer
Clinic.
clear margin and it
means that the cancer
is completely
excised.
If the cancer was
not completely excised,
the pathologist
will declare the
“margins are unclear”,
which alerts
the skin cancer
doctor to re-excise
residual cancer.
“Surgical margin”
is the amount of extra
skin surrounding
the skin cancer that
is required to completely
remove the
skin cancer.
The guideline
recommends, for
a basal cell carcinoma,
a 2-3 mm of
the surgical margin.
i.e. extra 2-3mm of
healthy skin around
cancer needs to be
removed.
For malignant melanoma,
the surgical
margin is 20mm.
Although the two
skin cancers are the
same size, depending
on the type of
and the aggressiveness
of cancer the
surgical margins
are different and
hence the extensiveness
of surgery
and the size of the
scar can be vastly
different.
Draft concept of plaza and community building (subject to change)
Have your say on new
Eastwood shopper car park
and plaza
Consultation has now begun
on concepts to relocate the
existing Glen Street car park to
the Shaftsbury Road precinct
Under the concepts, the Glen
Street car park site, after
construction of the Shaftsbury
carpark, would be transformed
into a public plaza and
community hub.
I would encourage everyone
in the community to have their
Denistone residents oppose development plan
ALMOST one hundred residents from Denistone
and West Ryde voiced concern about a
proposed “overdevelopment” during a public
meeting at the Denistone Sports Club last week.
The development is
for 68 - 70 Chatham
Road in Denistone
and will require the
demolition of the two
existing homes at
68 and 70 Chatham
Road to be replaced
by four double storey
homes.
These homes will
include one four
bedroom double storey
home, one three
bedroom double
storey home as well
as two single storey
homes and three
bedroom homes with
parking on a swivel
roundabout.
The angry residents
said nine mature
trees will also be removed
to enable the
development to occupy
more than 70
per cent of the site.
“The foundations of
the development will
have a major impact
on adjacent neighbours’
trees as well
as interfere with or
cause undue shadowing
on a number
of sites,” the residents
said.
“The development
is not within the
designated Denistone
Character Area
guidelines as to
street ambience and
size on the street and
on the land size.”
“The multi dwelling
conjoined development
is seen as not
representative of
the character area
spread across two
lots with four large
residences.
“The voice of the
meeting was a re-
sounding NO to the
development.”
“After looking up the coast
and down the coast, as you
do, we decided we still loved
Macquarie Park,” said John
with a lingering Canadian accent.
“Location is a big reason why
we are here.”
“We have a big yard for the
grandkids to play in. I have
my little garden. The beautiful
surrounds really are lovely and
very well kept. You have all the
great facilities here, and you’re
at the heart of the community,
not just the village,” said John.
“It’s a ten minute walk to the
train station. We can get a bus
to almost anywhere. We’ve
downsized from two to one
car, so it’s great having public
transport right to the door.”
Closer to home, The Hub, the
Village caf,, has that palpable
sense of connection.
As a key player in the Resident’s
Committee (Treasurer)
John said it was consciously
created to allow residents to
come together.
“It’s the centre of activity - a
bit like going with my grandmother
down to the village
shop when I was a kid in Canada.
We’ve recreated that.”
“Any given day residents can
have a free cuppa, a biscuit
and socialise,” said John.
“While we have a dedicated
activity planner, as some people
get older they get a little
more inward. They might not
come out for an activity, but
they’ll come out for a cuppa.”
The Wellar’s also appreciate
access to care in their retirement
decision.
“It’s important to us, driven
by my own personal experience
with my parents in Canada,”
said John.
“I’m eight years older than
my wife. At 72, if my health
happened to deteriorate we
could remain in the same community,
but I would be in residential
care.”
Willandra has a range of one
and two bedroom units available.
Wednesday 13 February, 2019 THE WEEKLY TIMES 27
Dual tons place
Tigers in box seat
SYDNEY Cricket Club has shown it has the batting depth
to be a force in the 2018-19 NSW Premier Cricket first grade
finals series.
The Tigers produced
a runfest at the Village
Green in Kensington
last Saturday
when they posted
5-410 on the opening
day of their clash with
University of NSW.
Highlight were the
magnificent unbeaten
centuries by Steve Eskinazi
(179 not out) and
keeper batsman Beau
McClintock (109 not out)
and classy 84 from the
consistent number three
Anthony Mosca.
It follows the prolific
run scoring of recent
centurions Matthew
Rodgers and Kent recruit
Zak Crawley, who both
missed out with the bat
against the Students.
Middlesex import Eskinazi
has proved a real
find for the Tigers this
summer with 660 runs to
date in his debut season
at a healthy average of
60.0.
Last weekend’s ton
against University was
Steve’s second for Sydney
over the past fortnight
and his best knock
since joining the club last
October.
The dashing Eskinazi
hammered two sixes and
22 boundaries during his
epic 257 ball innings and
featured in two significant
partnerships after
a rocky start from the Tigers
top order.
Rodgers was dismissed
for a first ball
duck before NSW U/19s
rep Liam Scott (6) and
Crawley (2) followed suit
- all victims of University
quick Declan White (3-98
off 21 overs) as the Tigers
slumped to be 3-33
in the opening session
after winning the toss.
Eskinazi and Mosca
carved out a crucial
fourth wicket partnership
of 125 before the
Englishman added a
further 213 runs in an
unbroken sixth wicket
stand with wicket keeper
McClintock.
The fast developing
McClintock has proved
a capable foil - he faced
115 balls and clouted
ten boundaries and two
sixes to help put the
Tigers back in the box
seat.
Triumphant North Ryde RSL skipper Brett Roberts holds the urn after
securing the Ashes last week. He is pictured with Cricket Club president
Kel Gray, Tim Cordner and vice captains Andrew Harrison and Craig Gowan.
All have given tremendous service to the club over many years.
Condon destroys Poms as
North Ryde hold on to Ashes
NORTH Ryde RSL Cricket Club have produced yet another sizzling
performance to retain the ‘Ashes’.
The proud sporting
organisation reign supreme
in their international
challenge with
touring English club
Norton Oakes – winning
last week’s one
off test match at E.L.S
Hall Oval North Ryde in
convincing fashion.
Having earlier wrapped
up the one-day series,
the North Ryde warriors
gained bragging rights
with a crushing victory
over the Poms that ensured
the little urn remained
down under.
Still reeling from the
tragic death of 21 year
old young gun Ben Cordner,
the North Ryde team
dominated from the outset
with bat and ball.
Promising quick Josh
Condon (3-14 off 16
overs) and the evergreen
Craig Gowan (3-10 off
nine) were the chief destroyers
as North Ryde
skittled the tourists for
80 on the opening day.
Experienced Chris
Baker top scored for
Norton Oakes with a
gritty 24.
Stylish half centuries
from stalwart Andrew
Harrison (69) and all
rounder Tim Cordner (51
not out) and a quickfire
29 from Gowan helped
North Ryde amass a total
of 236.
Carl Fairhurst (4-33 off
eleven), Rob Shaw (3-
61 off 24) and Michael
Simpson (2-9 off four)
were the pick of the English
bowlers.
The lethal Condon
grabbed four second innings
scalps (4-26 off 14
overs) to help rout the
Poms for 65 on the final
day – capping a fine display
with match figures
of 7-40 off 30 overs.
A grieving Cordner followed
up his superb 98
in the second one day
international with an unbeaten
half century and
figures of 2-12 and 2-11
with the ball – dedicating
his impressive Test
deeds to his late brother.
Other North Ryde
bowlers to shine were
Brett Roberts (2-16 off
18 overs); Billy Flynn (2-3
off five) and Dan Gorman
(2-24 off nine).
Luke Schutt (19) and
Simpson (12) were the
only English batsmen to
reach double figures.
Ryde Rugby’s goodwill Fijian trek
RYDE Rugby Club’s family and friends travelled to Fiji in the New Year on a goodwill trip
- taking on Korovutu Village in a friendly match in sweltering conditions.
All enjoyed the experience
and took part in
a welcoming ceremony
luncheon with the entire
community.
Ryde Rugby president
Warren Price thanked
Brus Beleirara and Tony
plus the entire Korovutu
Village for organising
the match and post
game celebrations for
The Tiger cubs raced
in nine tries in a sharp
display to open their
2019 NSWRL Junior Cup
campaign on a strong
note.
With power forwards
Brendan Tumeth, Will
Carroll, Watisoni Bogiso,
Mataele Fifita, Wilkinson
Papalii-Afoa and hooker
Sherif Awick paving the
way, the Tigers dominated
from the outset.
Promising Balmain
halves Christian Jardim
and Liam Wright-Terry
provided slick service
to gun centres Tony
Sukkar , 15, and Tafeuni
Vea and fullback
Ponipate Rakuli, who
created havoc out wide
with their strength and
speed.
Vea took out the Players’
Player award for his
strong running and twotry
effort.
Papalii-Afoa, Bogiso,
Vea and wingers Alex
Miltiadous and Reagan
Anthony Watts all
crossed for neat tries
as the cubs jumped to a
commanding 24-0 lead
before the interval.
There was no stopping
the Tigers after the
break with the talented
Jardim, Vea, Sukkar and
the tireless Carroll posting
second half tries to
complete the rout.
THERE was heartbreak
for Balmain’s U/18s after
suffering a 28-26 first up
loss to St George in the
the players and friends.
As part of their support
Ryde Rugby organised
a large amount of
football gear that was
donated by Eastwood
The Club’s long term
sponsors Frigcorp
additional support
by sponsoring Korovuto’s
Powerful Tiger cubs slay Saints
in U/16 Matthews Cup opener
BALMAIN Under 16 junior representative rugby league team served notice that they’ll
be a force to be reckoned with in this year’s Harold Matthews Cup competition after
trouncing St George 46-6 last Saturday at Mascot Oval.
NSWRL S.G Ball Cup series.
In a game of fluctuating
fortunes where both
teams registered five
tries apiece, the Dragons
collected the two
competition points via
the trusty boot of centre
Spiro Psiroukis.
The Tigers looked
strong in the opening 20
minutes, darting over for
three quick tries by back
rower Zayn Wilkins,
centre Josh Rizk and
winger Oskar Enasio to
lead 16-4.
But a rejuvenated St
George side turned the
match with a flurry of
points before and after
the break – posting
four unanswered tries
FREE HEADGEAR
through centre Jacob
Kiraz (2), Psiroukis and
pivot Braxton Wallace
plus to establish a 26-16
lead.
The Tiger cubs then
produced a barnstorming
finish with hooker
Jake Kusto and the elusive
Rizk notching four
pointers to level the
scores.
Skilful five eighth Zane
Camroux muffed his final
conversion attempt
to give the cubs the
edge.
A controversial penalty
from a missed field goal
attempt enabled the
Dragons to grab good
field position and boot
a late penalty goal to secure
victory.
RYDE EASTWOOD Leagues Club recognises that drought-affected
NSW farming communities have been doing it really tough lately.
By the oneeyed
Tiger
Therefore, the club decided
to lend its support
to their cause by working
with Rural Aid Australia
to coordinate the first of
two hay drop donations.
The destination for the
first hay drop was Pallal,
located five minutes
south west of Bingara in
the New England region.
On January 13, the first
two trailer loads of hay
were delivered to local
Pallal farmers Georgie
and Bruce Butler, who
then dispersed the 1,500
kilograms of hay to six
other local farms in the
region.
Ryde-Eastwood
Leagues Club CEO Carl
Pozzato said the drought
has caused so many issues
for those affected
including tough decisions
on livestock and
caring for sick animals,
a lack of feed sources,
not to mention the effect
on families and the wider
community.
“Every hay bale counts
and the club’s initial
$25,000 contribution, including
all transportation
costs, saw local farmers
receive approximately
eleven bales of hay
each,” Carl added,
Club President Jim Mc-
Clymont says: “I think it’s
really important for clubs
like Ryde-Eastwood to
get behind the cause of
helping the farmers in
their time of need. The
club has committed to
further donations in support
of the farmers and
hopefully our contribution
will help ease the plight
faced by those droughtaffected
communities.”
Ryde-Eastwood
Leagues Club has
worked closely in tandem
with charity organisation
Rural Aid Australia, which
was founded in 2015 to
provide a central point of
focus for rural communities
who require assistance.
The club is also currently
reviewing other
initiatives to support the
New England North West
communities.
New Tigers supercoach
Michael
‘Madge’ Maguire
announcing the appointment
said Moses
was a perfect
role model on and
off the field with the
support of the all the
players.
He will be backed in
the leadership group
by Benji Marshall,
Robbie Farah, Chris
Lawrence, Russell
Packer, Luke Brooks
and Elisha Taylor.
Already the new
look Tigers are training
their butts off and
will have a chance to
display their wares
when they trial with
the Kiwis in Kiwiland
Saturday March 2.
The real test is Saturday
March 16 when
they make mincemeat
of the Manly Silvertails
in the opening
round at Leichhardt
Oval HQ at
5.30pm. See ya there.
