Welcome to the first edition of Out and About STYLE Magazine, our
monthly fashion, beauty and lifestyle magazine. I am so delighted
about this publication, but I am even more excited that you’ve joined
me here.
There are not many magazines, if any, that are not plastered with celebrities, socialites and reality TV
stars. Instead of trying to reinvent the proverbial fashion wheel, Out and About STYLE is designed to
highlight and celebrate the “everyday individual”.
How often do you pick up beauty, fashion and lifestyle magazines and end up thinking, “I can’t look
like that” or “I can’t afford that” or “he/she is able to do that because they’re a celebrity or they’re
filthy rich.” Admit it - many times! Well, at least I know I often get that feeling. And while I don’t mind
seeing Kim K. in the latest trends on Rodeo Drive, I believe it’s high time we begin the revel in the
everyday fashionistas who are often times the hidden gems!
In this magazine, our aim is show people whom we can all identify with and can get real inspiration
from. How? Because they are mainly working class folks like you and I. And if they are a bit further
up the food chain, they’ve worked their butts off to get there. I also hope that through this magazine,
we can inspire someone to step out and do something they’ve always wanted to do, but for various
reasons, have not taken the plunge. This will mainly be done through our recurring Features – Fashion
and Beauty; Behind the Brand, For the Culture and Lifestyle sections.
I believe there is no better way to launch Out and About STYLE Magazine than by celebrating the
“dark horses”. In this issue, you will meet various beautiful individuals who courageously live with
Alopecia and Vitiligo. These individuals are seldom considered your “average beauty”. We do hope
that by sharing their stories, we will provide a platform for changing the discourse, and no doubt
inspire others who may be going through similar challenges. We want to do this as a reminder to us
all that we are imperfectly perfect and that’s what makes us PHENOMENAL!
In this issue, we also go Behind the Brand with Noor Al Tamimi, CEO of one of the UAE’s biggest
salon brands. She talks to us about how she managed to build her business from the ground up.
Inside you’ll also find male and female style features, Makeup Madness, book reviews, fitness features
including Yummy Mommy and Cross-training; Travel with Leela – our travel blogger and guru; The
Cam – Shoe Cam, Bag Cam, Nailed It, Beard Gang Cam and also feast your eyes on some candy in
the Candy Cam…… we’ll say no more, but you’ll thank us later!
Finally, we want our magazine to be entertaining, informative and engaging, but above all, useful.
I hope you will enjoy this first issue. We would love to know if there are any topics you’d like to see
covered in the future. Please also send us your feedback and remember to share on your social media
channels by using the hashtag #outandaboutstylemag.
Lots of love,
A JOURNEY TO SELF-ACCEPTANCE DEALING WITH ALOPECIA
5
KIMBERLY CAREY

1. Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from?
What do you do for a living, and what are your
hobbies and interest?
My name is Kimberly Carey, and I am the owner and
makeup artist of Heavenly Reflection Makeup-UAE. I am
originally from St. Louis, Missouri in the United States,
but moved to the UAE 8 years ago from Houston, Texas.
I enjoy salsa dancing, working out, and shopping.
2. What is Alopecia and who gets it?
Alopecia is an autoimmune disorder that causes one’s
hair to fall out in stages. It is a disorder that comes and
goes. Anyone can get it and it can happen at any age.
3. How long have you had Alopecia and how has it
impacted your life?
I’ve had Alopecia for 20 years. And at first, I saw it
as a curse, but after embracing it, I see it is and was a
blessing.
4. Have you learnt to embrace it, and if so, how?
I have embraced it, and by letting it go, I’ve prevented
it from controlling how I view myself.
5. Do people stare at you on the street? Do you feel like
you stand out in a good or bad way?
People do stare quite a lot and it’s fine. I feel as if
I’m bringing a new standard of beauty and exposing
them to the fact that we are a different and that’s what
makes us beautiful.
6. You are really confident. What advice would you
give to other people who suffer from Alopecia and
who may be afraid of what other people think?
You don’t suffer unless you want to. People are too
busy worrying about themselves to be worried about
you. Don’t get me wrong — people are cruel! Kids
and adults have said things to me that make me mad
and even cry. But I’d rather focus on the love and
support I have surrounding me. Never forget those
who are on your side.
7. If your hair grew back, would you keep the look you
currently have, or would you change it?
I honestly don’t know. If it grew normally, I’d probably
change it. But I’d rather be the one in control, so I’d
probably keep the look.
8. Were you always interested in fashion and makeup?
No. I had no idea I’d be interested. My interest didn’t
start until I moved to UAE. God placed me right where
he wanted me, so that I could be part of this industry.
9. What’s your personal go-to look?
Makeup: simple foundation and powder routine, no
contour or highlighter required. I will have brows,
lashes and lips. Those are a must.
Fashion: skinny jeans and a t-shirt can take you far,
but it’s all in the shoes. I love heels. They can take any
outfit, including jeans, to a new level.
10. What advice do you have for someone who really
wants to work bald in the business world, but needs
that final shot of inspiration?
If you don’t care, they don’t care. But don’t be surprised
if they do say something. You are a packaged deal
and they should be more concerned with your skill and
abilities, instead of focusing on something you can’t
control. Rock your bald like they rock their hair.
11. What are some of your achievements since having
Alopecia?
2015-16: Head of Makeup and Styling for Abu Dhabi
Fashion Party
2016 : Spokesmodel for Runway Dubai and Tips and
Toes Salon and Spa
2018 : Spokesmodel for Prestige Style Fashion of Abu Dhabi
12. Tips: When you have Alopecia
• Embrace it when you feel ready. Don’t let anyone
tell you differently.
• Your comfort is what counts. Take your life back
and start living. Don’t let “IT” take you.
• It’s OK to be different and be the only one who’s
different.
• Get ready for the negative stares and comments,
but never forget the positive compliments and love.
These will help you get through tough times.
• You never know who’s watching you or who
you will inspire. Alopecia is not just about you.
Someone else may be on the verge of losing a
personal war with their situation (maybe hair loss
or worse), but seeing you inspires them to keep
going, change their minds, etc., ...
A JOURNEY TO
SELF-ACCEPTANCE
DEALING WITH
VITILIGO
7

ILIDIO
JUNIOR
1. Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you
from? What do you do for a living, and
what are your hobbies and interest?
Hello. My name is Ilidio Junior. I’m African,
from Mozambique to be precise. I am 19
years old and a proud wearer of Vitiligo. In
my spare time, I do motivational speaking.
My talks are usually around social exclusion
based on physical appearance. I see myself
as an advocate and ambassador for Vitiligo.
I’m passionate about helping others living
with this condition because I know how
difficult it can be when socially ostracized.
2. What is Vitiligo?
Vitiligo (pronounced “vit-il-eye-go”) is a skin
condition in which a loss of pigment causes
the skin to appear white (depigmentation).
3. How long have you had Vitiligo and how
has it affected your life?
I have had it all my life. I was born with
it whereas most other people with Vitiligo
show signs after birth. My skin condition has
had a negative impact on my life. However,
over time, I’ve turned those experiences into
positive ones. I’ve learnt to embrace who I
am and I do so with pride.
4. How has your journey to self-acceptance
been?
I used to get into fights with people who
insult me. But today, I try to educate people
about Vitiligo, because with knowledge,
people are less likely to see it as a disease
and simply as a different kind of skin.
I believe God had a purpose for me when
he made me this way. That took some time
for me to understand, but now, I see myself
as a source of inspiration for other young
people in Mozambique. I now see God’s
purpose for my life.
5. Do you feel like you stand out in a good or
bad way?
Yes! I am the centre of attention when I am
on these streets. I usually look at it in two
ways — they either think I’m weird or cool.
Either way, with my level of self-acceptance,
I see myself as a regular human being, just
living as everyone else is.
6. You are really confident. What advice would
you give to other people who have Vitiligo
and are afraid of what people might think
of them?
You know what, I think people need to
learn to live with individual differences. My
Vitiligo does not make me different to any
other human being. In fact, I know it makes
me special. My message to others with
Vitiligo is to remember that God made you
and He makes no mistakes. He also does
not give you anything He has not prepared
you for.
7. Have you always been interested in fashion
and modeling?
I think fashion lives inside everyone, but
sometimes, people just need someone to
call attention to it. For me, I have always
been interested in fashion and have always
thought that my style was very different than
everyone else’s.
A JOURNEY TO SELF-ACCEPTANCE DEALING WITH VITILIGO
1. Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from?
What do you do for a living, and what are your
hobbies and interest?
My name is Prarthana and I’m from Bangalore, India.
I’m 21 years old and currently studying for a Medical
Electronics Engineering degree.
I love makeup and fashion and I model part-time.
2. What is Vitiligo and who gets it?
Vitiligo is the loss of the skin pigment ‘melanin’ over
certain parts of the skin, thus appearing as white
patches on the body. Anyone may get Vitiligo, but it’s
more obvious in melanated skin.
3. How long have you had Vitiligo and how has it
impacted your life?
I’ve had Vitiligo for about 11 years. At first, it was
extremely hard to deal with as I was only a teenager.
I used makeup to cover my flaws, but I was bullied
in school for wearing makeup. It wasn’t an easy
journey.
7. How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is definitely very basic. I like solid
colours and classy pieces. I love to wear fashion that’s
comfortable. I absolutely love jumpsuits. I think they
are flattering on everyone.
8. Have you always been interested in fashion and
makeup?
I was forced into makeup at the age of 11 when I got
Vitiligo. I wasn’t ready to show my Vitiligo just yet.
It took me 8 years to perfect my makeup skills and I
learnt to love it. Fashion has always been something
I’ve loved. I loved shopping as kid. Even then, I knew
what went well together.
9. If you had to choose 3 makeup items, what would
they be?
That’s easy!
• Eyebrow pencil
• Mascara
• Liquid lipstick.
4. Have you learnt to embrace it, and if so, how?
Yes, I have learnt to embrace it. Everyone takes their
own time to realise that our flaws set us apart from
the rest of the world.
5. Do people stare at you on the street? Do you feel
like you stand out in a good/ bad way?
People do stare but I don’t feel bad about it. They’re
curious and I totally get that. I do look different and I
do get stares because of it.
10. Does it take you longer to do your makeup because
you have Vitiligo?
I used to cover my Vitiligo with a heavy duty concealer,
which took about 30 minutes every day. But now that
I’m unafraid of my Vitiligo protruding through my
makeup, it barely takes me 10 mins.
11. Do brands embrace your skin condition?
Yes! I feel like the beauty industry is slowly shifting to
realistic beauty standards.
6. You are really confident. What advice would you
give to other people who have Vitiligo and are
afraid of what people might think of them?
I think people need to realise that our physical
appearances do not make us or break us. Be true
to yourself. Everyone has their own battles and will
never understand your pain.
Wear your flaws with honor. You are different and
that is your superpower.
12. Tips: When you have Vitiligo
• Always wear sunscreen! It’s super important to
protect the white patches as they’re very prone to
sunburns!
• Work on the things that interest you, those which
with you can escape the world.
• You have to remind yourself that you’re different.
There’s no one else like you and that is your
superpower!
Beauty
HACKS
If you’re part of the population who thinks that personal care costs too much, then
this one’s for you — simple beauty hacks that will not cost you a fortune nor too
much time. Whether you’re a man or a woman, everyone needs to value personal
care and hygiene. Look and feel good every single day!
Blow dry your
RAZOR
TO ENHANCE ITS LIFE
A blow dryer and razors are just some of the must-have tools in
a man’s vanity closet. But what you may not know is that these
two go together well. Blow drying your razor can improve its
longevity as the heat prevents oxidation and rusting caused by
moisture. So, if you’ve been breaking the bank with frequent
razor shopping, this hack will surely save you a fortune.
Baking soda with
LEMON
AS TOOTHPASTE
Had a busy week? Forgot to grab some toothpaste on your
grocery run? Well not to worry, these two simply items will not
only give you great smelling breath, but whiten your smile as
well. Simply mix a teaspoon of baking soda and lemon, swipe
it on your teeth using a toothbrush or just your finger. Leave it
for 2 minutes, rinse and you’re done!
12

Use gel
DEODORANT
TO AVOID BLISTERS ON YOUR FEET!
Deodorants are not just used to prevent smelly armpits, but can
also be used to avert blisters caused by new shoes. Functioning
as a moderate lubricant, the gel reduces the friction created
between your skin and shoes. Apply a generous amount of
deodorant on each foot, and ta-da, say goodbye to bruised
and stressed feet.
Run out of
SHAVING CREAM?
USE CONDITIONER!
Conditioners are made for moisturizing and taming the hair on
your head, right? If that’s what you think, then think again! If
run you happen to run out of shaving cream, there’s no need
to leave the house with a 5 o’clock shadow. Simply use some
conditioner as you would your regular shaving cream. It also
functions as a remedy for an itchy beard. Multipurpose, isn’t it?
Visine A. K. A
THE ACNE
TONER
Dealing with a huge pimple is something
no one wants, especially if you have an
event or are going out with that special
someone. Just saturate a cotton ball of
Visine and apply to the affected area. This
popular eye drop helps to tone annoying
zits and leaves you feeling more confident
about your appearance.
13

Restoring a broken lipstick with a
LIGHTER
Breaking your favourite lipstick is tantamount to a bad breakup.
But you can save yourself from misery by restoring your lipstick
with the help of a lighter! Melt the two points for a second or
two and stick them together. Do note not to hold the flame for
too long because you’ll end up with a melted lipstick! Once
done, freeze and lipstick will be as good as new.
Fix broken
POWDERS
BRONZERS, HIGHLIGHTER AND EYE SHADOWS
WITH ALCOHOL
Broken powdered makeup are as heartbreaking as
broken a lipstick! It’s high time to use your ingenuity.
With this simple hack you can save these makeup
essentials with alcohol.
Here’s what you do in
5 SIMPLE STEPS:
1. Crush the remaining powder until it is finely milled
2. Put some rubbing alcohol (at least 70%)
in a spray bottle or a dropper
3. Spray/ drop it over the broken powder.
Enough to create a paste
4. Use the back of a teaspoon to smooth the paste
5. Let it dry………
14

Braid your hair
overnight to achieve some
NATURAL
CURLS
If you don’t want to spend an hour or two curling your hair in the
morning, braid overnight and flaunt those waves when you wake
up! This is a great hack for the natural sisters and for those with
super-straight hair. And for sure, you’ll save time and effort every
morning.
Tea bag to soothe your
DARK CIRCLES
Tea lover? Why not put your used tea bags to work? The
tannin in tea bags has been known to reduce dark circles and
puffiness under your eyes. Leave it on for up to 15 minutes and
thank me later. Use green tea for maximum effect as it contains
caffeine and EGCG which can have anti-inflammatory effects.
Using
MASCARA
AS EYEBROW AND GEL EYELINER
Instead of spending on two makeup essentials, why not
unleash your resourcefulness and create a two-for-one? Take
advantage of your mascara to create those full brows and onpoint
winged eyeliner. Use an angled brush to mimic the hair
strokes of your brows and a small liner brush to perfect that
coveted winged tip!
Have some beauty hacks to share? Comment your favourite
tips and let’s make beauty routines more affordable!
BEHIND THE BRAND WITH
NOOR AL TAMIMI
OF DASHING INTERNATIONAL GROUP
1
Tell
us a bit about you and your brand
My name is Noor Al Tamimi. I am the Founder and CEO of Dashing International
Group; a chain of lounges branded as Bedashing Beauty Lounge. I am a mother
of 5 girls, the eldest is 19 and the youngest is 6 years old. I am Emirati, but
my mother is Jordanian, so I am actually half Emirati, half Jordanian. I studied
here in the UAE and majored in Finance. I started off working in the Banking
industry, but felt it didn’t suit my personality. I consider myself to be creative and
innovative. I’ve always had my own way of doing things and felt constrained
in the 9-5 world.
19

2
3
4
5
How did the Bedashing brand come about?
The brand started in 2008. After starting my first business which was trading
decorative accessories, I realised that logistics, inventory and stock-taking was
not my strength and I felt I should go towards the service industry.
It really began from casual conversations with my friends about starting a nail
bar and based on the feedback, I started conceptualizing it in 2008. I then
conducted a proper feasibility study where I engaged with various individuals
and realized that even in a saturated market, I really could carve out a niche and
grow a business from the ground up. And with the help of my sisters who were
also excited to come on board, Dashing Nails was born in December 2008.
What is your goal for the brand?
From day one, we imaged Dashing Nails, which then became Bedashing Beauty
Lounge, being part of an international chain. That was the vision. We thought
and acted that way from day one, ten years ago. It was not easy to brand every
item, from towels to nail files, clippers and nippers. But we acknowledged that we
needed to look the part. So we also invested heavily and presented ourselves as
an international chain from the get go. And thank God we believed, as we have
What is the Bedashing persona?
We imaged Bedashing to be a woman. She’s modern, progressive — she’s a
traveller who tries beauty services around the world. She’s very busy. She has
a busy career, social and family life. However, she wants to look groomed and
beautiful all the time. So this is what we look for when we hire. This is what we
look for when we decide to add a new service. This is what we look for when we
choose a franchisee. So if this is your persona, then you’ll be eligible to become
a franchisee.
How does someone acquire a franchise?
Applying to the franchise is very easy. Firstly, you’ll sign the non-disclosure agreement
(NDA) following which we’ll give you all the financial information to enable you to
make a decision and to see if it appeals to you. You also have the opportunity
to access your financial capabilities with regards to the amounts expected for a
20

franchise. We do not encourage people to take loans. If you are capable of investing
about AED 1.5 to 2 million, then you are eligible. If you are Emirati, you can
approach the Khalifa Fund to seek funding to become a Bedashing franchisee. We
have an alliance with the authority and the brand is also pre-approved with them.
6
7
Are you at all surprised about the growth of your company?
We are not! We have achieved quite a bit, but there is do much more that we
wish to accomplish.
What are the biggest challenges of owning your own brand?
The biggest challenge is that you have no excuses. You have to make it happen.
You have to make it succeed. You must think out of the box and make sacrifices in
ensuring the success of your business.
It is also about how effective you are in maintaining your success. Therefore, with
every growth spurt in the company, I have to constantly reinvent how I manage.
I also invest heavily in learning new skills and ensuring that I am kept abreast of
all the latest trends in the industry.
21

9
What
What’s the secret to being a fearless leader?
I find that when I am faced with challenges, I ask myself, “what’s the worst that
can happen?” Even if it is losing all our money, so what? ……We’ve enjoyed the
journey. We’ve enjoyed managing this business. It’s really about asking yourself,
what’s the best and worst that could happen as a result of your decision. Finally,
weigh the risk and the reward and make a decision.
words of encouragement do you have for women wanting to step out
into entrepreneurship?
My words of encouragement are very simple. It is to set yourself apart from the
rest. But mostly love what you do. Use your vision board to set out what you want
to accomplish in ten years, then start today with whatever you can do today. You
must step out in faith and with courage.
10
Do you ever feel pressured to look perfect because you own a beauty
company?
Yes!! Big time!! Big, big time. Just like any mother, for ten years of my life when
I started having kids, I didn’t look after my physical appearance as much as I
should. My go to look was flip-flops, a black top, black tights and Abaya – that’s
it! No makeup!! That was me for ten years. Then, when Bedashing started to
expand, I was like oh-oh I can’t continue like that. What message would I be
sending to people? So yes, I felt pressured into trying to look my best, but once
I did, there was a big difference in my self-confidence and deportment. I also
noticed a difference in the way people perceived me. Whether or not you want
to, you are the face of your brand!
11
What does success mean to you?
Success means I am better today than I was last year. I compare myself to myself
and this is how I measure success. This is what new year’s resolutions should be
about…...How can I be better this year? Set reasonable targets for the year that
you can attain and feel good about.
22

12
In terms of the strategic growth of your business, where do you see yourself
in the next ten years?
Behashing should be the parallel definition of beauty worldwide.
DEEP COLOUR
BLOCKING
Monochromatic style is good, but deep
color blocking is better, especially for
2019. This year, you can take two steps
back from your usual plain ensembles
and welcome some sunshine shades into
your style. From royal blue to saturated
yellow and everything in between —
there’s a room for every deep colour in
your wardrobe.
If you’re looking for a combination of
casual and versatile, look no further.
You’ll never go wrong with safari jackets.
Tailored for a more functional styling,
safari jackets are highly recommended
this time around. This classical piece is
perfect for everyday use — from casual
dining to formal meetings.
The last quarter of 2018 got the fashion crowd in
a frenzy with the chunky kicks. And luckily, 2019
will not be kicking this one to the curb. These
statement trainers will surely reignite your passion
for footwear. The best thing about the year ahead
is that we will be seeing more colour choices and
bolder designs. Don’t be afraid to give these a try.
UTILITY STYLE
For men, crisp whites, beige and khakis are staple
hues. This utility style is such a perfect embodiment
of the trend to come. It features masculine power
and functional fashion. Combat trousers, armywear,
and multi-pocket jackets are also set to
prevail this time. Complete your utility getup with a
pair of sturdy boots, and you’re good to go!
PATTERN
ON
PATTERN
Prepare for a pattern clash! Take a break from dull and onecolour
ensembles because it’s time to make way for lots of mixed
designs. This year is the perfect period to unleash your pattern
madness, and even pattern on pattern fits the box. So, forget the
strict mix and match pattern rules and go for the unconventional.
The risk is worth the stare!
Don’t be afraid to create bold choices in your wardrobe this
year because 2019 is meant to showcase your unique styling
to the fullest.
LIFESTYLE
Cross-Train
Your Mind,
Body and Soul
We all have our fair share of workrelated
stressors coupled with
managing the demands of our personal
lives. Often, these responsibilities
can easily pile up and lead to life’s
imbalances.
Regrettably, prolonged periods and
consistent episodes of anxieties can
also take a damaging toll on our
health. However, it’s not only our
physical well-being affected by the
imbalance, but also our mind and soul.
That is why exercise may not be
enough to regain control of our lives
and achieve happiness and health.
One important consideration we each
should make to create a rich and
healthy lifestyle is to focus on crosstraining
our mind, body and soul.
I’d like to share a few proven and
effective simple ways to cross - train
holistically – physically, mentally and
spiritually – and achieve balance in all
facets of our lives.
35

20 SIMPLE WAYS TO ACHIEVE MIND, BODY AND SOUL BALANCE
1. Express gratitude: Simple gestures like showing appreciation for the tiniest gifts like offering smiles or
even a compliment to a stranger on the elevator, is one of the best ways to achieve happiness and
keep those feel-good hormones flooding your system.
2. Get quality, restorative sleep: Having adequate hours of sleep every night is regenerative for your
body because it promotes overall health and improves mood. For the brain, a good sleep translates
to better cognition and mind clarity. You can be sure to maintain a balance in your life by getting the
sleep that your spirit, mind and body requires!
3. Reflect: With life’s daily pressures, it is often hard to take some time to recognise the beauty
surrounding us. Throughout the day, we tend to forget how rewarding it is to wake up to a new day
or notice the beauty in the morning’s sunrise. I challenge you by the close of each day, to jot down a
moment you are most grateful for throughout your day.
4. Stop for a while and breathe: Taking a break from time to time isn’t bad at all. If you’re looking to reduce
stress and to boost productivity and prevent feeling bogged down by work pressure, stop for a while and
breathe. Perhaps enrolling in a yoga class would be beneficial in learning various breathing techniques.
5. Use essential oils: Can’t sleep? Relax and keep your brain from wandering at night and sleep well with
essential oils. Essential oils like lavender and peppermint can promote sleep and reduce stress.
6. Practice deep breathing: It is one of simplest ways we can connect our mind, body and soul. Learn
how to breathe consciously with awareness and to restore balance. You can also reduce depression
and anxiety by focusing on breathing.
7. Exercise regularly: Be sure to look for one you enjoy so that it will feel less like a chore and more of
an interest. Ultimately, this lifestyle change will flood your system with endorphins.
8. Try grounding: Another simple way of cross-training your mind, body and soul is planting your bare
feet on the ground as often as you can. Also called earthing, grounding reduces inflammation and
increases antioxidants. And the best part, it also calms our mind because it improves the relationship
among the planet’s natural charge, the earth’s electrons and our bodies.
9. Choose and eat organic foods: Crops treated with pesticides and herbicides and grown with chemical
fertilizers are not good for your health. Avoid them. Instead, load your diet with plant-based and
organic foods, such as nuts, fruits, vegetables and whole grains that can support healthy cell function and
energise your system. It also improves mental health and keeps you spiritually inspired and enlightened.
10. Use a shower filter: One thing I also discovered that actually helps in restoring balance is installing a
shower filter to keep chlorine and other toxins from damaging your skin.
11. Smile more. Frown less: Don’t take life too seriously. Or else, you will miss many good times it has to
offer. Simply smiling in front of a mirror or alone, can make you feel great and reduce wrinkles and
the fine lines caused by frowning.
36

12. Travel: Rewire your entire well-being by exploring and learning about other cultures through travel.
You should do it as often as you can. After all, travelling also gives your mind and body a break. Do
it alone or with company and get the most of it.
13. Do yoga: Practising yoga not only strengthens your body and improves its flexibility, but it also relaxes
the mind. It also builds awareness and helps kick bad habits.
14. Live at the moment: Spend some time with your spouse, children or support system, but without
devices and distractions. Be present! It does not only help you nourish relationships, but also creates
beautiful memories and experiences.
15. Recognise your mistakes and forgive yourself: Do not let your past destroy you or your happiness.
Learn from your mistakes, try not to recommit them and live in the present. Accept the mistakes that
have happened, recognize the lessons learned and forgive yourself immediately.
16. Cut major stressors: Whether it is a job you hate, clutter or anything that makes you stressed, you
have to cut them out to achieve balance. It also includes cutting unhealthy relationships. After all, you
cannot thrive with these stressors every waking day. You deserve to be happy.
17. Meditate: In addition to doing yoga, you must also engage in meditation, a scientifically proven way
of improving physical and mental health. Practising it daily, you can connect with your inner self and
lower your stress levels. Meditation can also make you more aware, compassionate and conscious by
“being present.”
18. Spend time with nature: You can begin by packing your bag and venturing outside onto some
walking or hiking trails or getting some sunlight. Once you are reconnected with nature, your overall
psychological health will improve. Just do it!
19. Avoid negative people: Instead, surround yourself with those that support your happiness and make
you feel great. Avoid people who love to gossip and have a whole load of drama to share.
20. Live your passion: There’s nothing more fulfilling than living the life you want (and deserve). One way
to do it is living your passion which can empower you to do things that make you feel free and more
creative. Doing something you love even with just a little bit of your time and feel more alive.
Are you ready to cross-train your body,
mind and soul?
It’s about time… the time to live the life you deserve! practise these simple,
but effective ways of creating that balance you need for happiness,
healthy and holistic living.
PS: Do you think I missed a tip or two to cross-train the mind, body and
soul? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR
CAREER, FAMILY AND KEEPING FIT?
It is so easy to stop caring for yourself as a mom, and that is
heightened when you are a full-time working mom. The juggling act
can be exhausting and incredibly overwhelming. However, I have
learned through this journey that both my family life and career can
flourish while I create nurturing moments for myself.
Fitness was never on my list of priorities until my son was two years old
and I saw a photo of myself someone had posted on social media. I
could hardly recognise myself, I did not hate myself, but I totally hated
the photo. And while friends were ‘liking’ and leaving nice comments,
I was annoyed that I allowed myself to remain at pregnancy weight/
size two years postpartum all because I have been eating for two
while pregnant and kept doing so while exclusively breastfeeding
my son for 12 months. I realised then that I simply cannot be all
things to all people because I was losing myself in the process, and
that I needed to find some type of balance between my profession,
being a parent and getting my body, mind and spirit back. Employing
a housemaid became a high priority. This turned out to be a most
valuable and rewarding step that has helped to take some of the
workload off my shoulders and allows me time for just me.
It is not easy, but it is worth it! By managing my time wisely, working
out my schedule around my family and with support from the rest
of my household, I fit in my work, family time and workouts all in a
day. I am a morning person. So most mornings, I am up at 5:30am
completing school work if needed, or I am doing workouts in my
home until 6:30am while everyone is asleep. After work, usually
around 2:30pm, my whole family is off to a local leisure centre; my
son gets to enjoy swimming while I am in the gym for 30 minutes
before joining the rest of the family at the pool. With meal prep out of
the way, I am head chef, making dinner for my boys by mid-evening.
My son looks forward to alone time with me. So we are either going
to the park together or going for a late lunch and play at Funcity on
days when we just don’t fancy the leisure centre. He needs me at
bedtime too, and I look forward to hopping into his bed at around
8pm for a story and prayers before he nods off. I am in my own bed
by 9:30 to get enough rest to start my day all over again.
WHAT’S THE BEAUTY ROUTINE OR PRODUCT
YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT SINCE YOU
BECAME A MOM?
Wet wipes! I stock enough for both myself and my son. On those days
when my energy is depleted and I just cannot do my actual cleansing
routine, I simply wipe away my makeup and lipstick which I absolutely
cannot live without.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 TIPS TO HELP WOMEN
GET INTO SHAPE POST PREGNANCY?
Ditch the ‘mom guilt’
I went through this phase of feeling that I needed to be all things to my
son, feeling almost like someone somewhere is watching my every move and
getting stressed for fear of falling short of being a great mom. That guilt has
not magically disappeared, but I am no longer consumed by it. I have learnt
that as long as our children’s needs for safety and love are met, then the rest
is not worth stressing over. There is this guilt too or comparisons that we make
with other moms who may have ‘snapped back’ into shape within weeks of
childbirth. No comparing!!!Our fitness journeys will be different, our goals
will be different, and our bodies are all uniquely different. So it’s ‘you against
you’, in your own time and at your own pace. Set short-term fitness goals that
are realistic, reachable and that allow you to see results. When we feel good
about ourselves, we spill that good energy on to our children.
Value your time
Scheduling workouts are often hard for me to stick to as a working mom. So,
I basically squeeze exercise in whenever and wherever I can. Some days, I
may have 15-20 minutes to spare. On those days, I pack in High Intensity
Interval Training to get the best out of those 20 minutes. On other days, I may
not be able to go to the gym. So I workout at home. Popping in an exercise
video or You Tube clip while my son was younger and taking naps or playing
nearby was also a time saver. There will be days when you simply can’t work
out and that’s okay too. Consistency is key. Get back into your routine as soon
as you can without beating yourself up.
Empower yourself
You want to do it, you have it in you, but you feel you need extra support
which you probably may never get. Fitness can be a lonely journey you have
to be willing to go it alone to achieve your goal of staying in shape. Make a
commitment with yourself to be healthier, or to shed a few pounds (whatever
your goals may be) and stick to it. Setting aside time for yourself is an act
of self-care. Show yourself and others that you matter and you now know it.
Conquering new fitness challenges feed into an amazing feeling of pride and
accomplishment, and boosts self confidence. If you want it, you can have it.
Now is the time to put your best body confident self out there! A busy family
schedule can often throw self-care out the window. Doing your best by finding
what works for you is worth it.
TRAVEL
WITH
KAHLEEL
HAMILTON
LESSONS FROM
A SOLO TRAVELER
Traveling solo has the uncanny ability to reveal aspects of
your personality that no other experience can.
Often times, the unpredictability, bumps and general outof-the-boxness
of travel push you to the limits and expose
nerves that would otherwise remain hidden.
1. BE FLEXIBLE. This has to be the number one lesson you learn
before embarking on a travel experience. Think contortionist
flexible. There are things that will go inevitably wrong despite
your best efforts and meticulous planning. Getting upset or
flustered will not help and can actually make things worse. Be
open to other options, plan B or C or even D. Sometimes, you
have to take the 12-hour bus ride instead of the 2-hour plane
ride when your plan fails. Go with it. You never know what
adventure awaits you.
2. DEVELOP A THICK SKIN. Seriously. As a black woman
travelling, I’ve had to develop the skin of an elephant. There
are times when people have pointed at me and laughed, or
talked about me in front of my face. At first, it was upsetting, but
I realised it was their ignorance that caused them to behave
that way. They have the problem, not me. Now I just look
at them and graciously say hello. And they are often times
very embarrassed and quickly look away. The reality is that
sometimes you are the anomaly. Some people have never
seen anything like you before and they are curious, shocked,
appalled, whatever. Don’t let it ruin your experience.
I am no travel expert by any means, but I am a usually
an introspective person. Travel allows for introspection.
Plenty of time to think about your experiences and how
they’ve changed you, hopefully for the better.
You’ve got to have something to do when you’re travelling
on an overnight train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok with
all the lights turned out and you’re lying in the top bunker
of an ancient train hoping not to fall off.
Here are some of the little lessons I’ve picked up along the
way. Lessons that made my travels enjoyable, memorable
and relatively stress — free. There were moments of
personal growth and opportunities for me to learn about
myself.
3. EAT WHERE THE LOCALS EAT. It’s often cheaper and chances
of getting food poisoning is greatly reduced. I employed this
strategy in Thailand and Istanbul as I made my way along
the streets in search of street food. I ate soooo much street
food from places that were seriously questionable in my very
Westernised mind. But because the locals flocked to these
places, I figured I’d be ok. Not sure if it’s a fool-proof strategy,
but it worked for me and I had some of the best meals.
4. BE OPEN MINDED. The truth is not everyone lives the way
you do, values the things you value, or look the way you do.
Things will shock your senses, surprise you, and maybe even
scare you a little when you travel. A different place can do
those things to you, but when you accept this, your experience
will be so much better. I am not going to lie, Thailand was my
first trip to Asia, and it was a lot different from anything I’d
ever experienced. I was a little overwhelmed in the beginning
— the squatting toilets, the language, the traffic (Bangkok)
and the grime and dirt (again Bangkok) was a lot to handle.
I had to take a deep breath and look beyond those negatives
to see the wonderful things the country had to offer. I am glad
I did. I thoroughly enjoyed my time despite all the unpleasant
factors that existed.
5. SAY HELLO TO STRANGERS. I know your parents taught you
otherwise. But I am going to tell you that this is one time you
don’t have to listen to them. When my travel buddy got sick, I
had to go out on my own. A simple hello was all it took for me to
meet some very cool people. Along the way, my friend and I met
other travellers at restaurants, bus stations and at our hotels. We
exchanged experiences, advice and laughs. Some of these people
are now friends which means I have places to crash and people to
hang with in the future.
6. PUT THE PLAN IN YOUR BACK POCKET. Random experiences are
what have made my travels memorable. Getting in a cab and
driving 150km each way to see a waterfall in Oman, getting
on the back of a motorbike with a stranger, saying yes to dinner
with someone I met while walking in Istanbul. All unplanned and
unscheduled. Loads of fun and good memories. Man, do I have
some great stories to tell!
7. USE YOUR BRAIN AND TRUST YOUR GUTS. I love adventure
and will pretty much say yes to any opportunity/invitation for
adventure. When you travel, especially as a lady, you will get
many invitations to do things, i.e, spending the night with someone
(turned that one down). I’ve said yes to many things, but I’ve also
said no quite a few times because I didn’t get good vibes or things
just didn’t seem kosher. Use your brain and take the necessary
precautions to be safe. Trust your instincts — any slight feeling that
you shouldn’t do something must not be ignored.
8. GET OUT OF THAT BOX. Demolish those four self-erected corners
and get out there. Be willing to do things you would never normally
do. Eat something that you would never usually try. I ate silk worms
and crickets in Chiang Mai. Not as bad as one would think. The
point is, don’t limit yourself to things you’re comfortable or familiar
with. Travelling will present many opportunities to try new things.
Go for it! You may be pleasantly surprised.
9. BE YOURSELF. Authenticity is your best accessory. Those who will
like you, will and those who don’t, well, they can piss off. Lol.
Honestly, when you travel no one really cares what you wear or
how awesome your matching luggage is. I know I don’t. I care
about meeting people who come across as being genuine and
real. Those are the people I want to spend all day at the beach
with and drink Chang beer while sharing our crazy travel stories.
10. SMILE. You’re travelling for heaven’s sake. You’re a pretty lucky
cookie. Plus, people are drawn to smiling people and they will tell
you how beautiful you are. You’ll make friends and be invited to
share an elephant ride. It’s especially useful at hotels. The staff will
be glad to do anything to keep you smiling. Trust me, this really
works.
OKAY. THOSE ARE MY PEARLS OF TRAVEL WISDOM.
