Video surveillance has advanced
rapidly since CCTV was invented in
1942. In particular, the move to
digital technology means its quality is
now good enough to be routinely used by
law enforcement agencies across the
world, whether it's in court as evidence or
to monitor and track individuals.
Despite concerns about privacy, CCTV
plays a fundamental role in daily life. In
the UK alone, there are between 4 million
and 5.9 million CCTV surveillance
cameras protecting the public, their
"Beyond the greater storage capacity that video
surveillance footage demands, police and other law
enforcement agencies are equally challenged by the
manner in which electronic evidence must be stored. If
the data collected is to be used to support legal cases, it
is essential that it follows the legal, compliance and
regulatory legislation - otherwise critical evidence could
many examples of CCTV being used to
help find missing people, it has become
part of the fabric of modern society.
However, this ongoing growth in the use
of video surveillance brings with it new
challenges for data storage, and as the
role of CCTV grows ever more important,
it is critical that it is managed and
protected in the correct way.
In particular, it's vital to consider data
storage and security, ensuring it abides by
the General Data Protection Regulation
(GDPR) and The Regulation of
Investigatory Power Act. For digital
evidence, it's important to be able to offer
seamless scalability to accommodate
rapid growth, along with a
comprehensive suite of data security
features that meet strict requirements for
file integrity, privacy, chain of custody,
and compliance.
