Camp Birchwood’s
countdown to confidence
Camp values that
make a difference
10. Girls make their own
decisions.
Camp engages girls in
their own decision-making
process. Yes, without
mom or dad there, it’s
up to them to make their
schedule and live out their
every day. Sometimes
they make mistakes. But
those gentle set-backs
show them they can persevere
and face more challenges
in their future.
9. Girls DO cool stuff.
Studies indicate that
girls tend to base their selfworth
on their relationships
rather than “hard skills” or
actual accomplishments.
At Birchwood, girls get off
the roller coaster of “what
others think” and start DO-
ING. What they gain is a
kind of “know how” no
one can ever take away.
8. Girls gain those
indispensable “soft skills.”
Unlike hard skills that
are based on the ability to
perform a task, soft skills
relate to how well you
conduct yourself within a
group.
At Birchwood, girls develop
crucial soft skills
living in a cabin of 10-12
their peers. In doing so,
they learn to share, use
good manners, listen well,
speak with respect, tolerate
differences, and come
together as a team to accomplish
goals.
7. An all-female setting is
all-special
Our all-female setting
minimizes distractions and
invites girls to communicate
openly and authentically.
There’s no competition
about appearance, or
status, or popularity. Girls
can let go of “who they
think they should be to
impress others” and focus
instead - on who they truly
are - unique, valuable, and
worthwhile individuals capable
of greatness.
6. At Birchwood, girls
stop, look, listen, and
reflect.
At Birchwood, our counselors
incorporate intentional
learning moments
into every day. Girls are
asked to reflect on their efforts
(big or small) so they
can appreciate their own
progress (rather than compare
it to others). Crystallizing
their growth turns
the simplest moment into
an epic confidence booster.
5. Social Media takes
a back seat to soulful
socializing
At Birchwood, all the
gadgets are put away. Girls
focus on what is happening
in the moment. Life
is not measured by selfies.
It is measured by
shared laughs, outdoor
adventures, meaningful
conversations, challenges
overcome, and real connections
made with friends
in real time.
4. Time in the outdoors is
the best time of all
At Birchwood, girls depart
the blitz and chaos
of modern life and enter
a space where they can
breathe fresh air, dive into
cool waters, and sit with
the earth. A calm simplicity
weaves itself into
their everyday experience.
Stresses dissipate. Their
world becomes smaller.
More manageable. Better.
Happier. Healthier.
3. Real role models who
make a real difference
Sometimes it takes
someone who isn’t your
adoring parent to motivate
and inspire you as you
grow up.
At Birchwood, girls are
surrounded by female role
models worthy of emulation.
These college-age
ladies empower girls to
celebrate their individuality,
take on brand new
challenges, express their
opinions with respect, and
appreciate uniqueness in
others.
2. Friends really are
friends forever.
As girls share their most
joyful, honest self with one
another, a binding connection
is made. At Birchwood
girls learn what it
feels like to live kindly
and respectfully with one
another. From start to finish,
they are encouraged to
care for their own self, and
for others. The kindred
connection that is built
within this setting lasts a
lifetime.
1. Resilience and strength
is learned
Whether sailing, camping,
shooting an arrow, or
making art, every day at
Birchwood girls are active,
soulful participants in
their own lives. The live
big. They learn handson.
And they stand taller
and prouder – and stronger
- when they go home because
of it.
“School of Rock” to redefine music education
Let’s admit it... today’s
music education is lackluster
at best, and non-existent
at worst.
Thus, “School of Rock”
decided to redefine music
education. Our mission is
to provide performancebased
music education
through the lens of modern
music...you know, the
tunes kids already rock out
to on Spotify.
At the core of School
of Rock’s philosophy is a
two-part educational model.
Students take a weekly
private lesson with the opportunity
to have some input
into their curriculum.
Our philosophy is, by playing
tunes the student likes
to listen to, they’re more
likely to find practicing
fun!
In weekly group band
rehearsals, students apply
the skills learned from
their private lessons. This
team orientation provides
accountability and social
skills development, helping
the student to develop
a sense of community and
purpose. Each season culminates
in a performance at
a local rock venue, putting
the ROCK onstage!
Our teachers are professional
musicians who have
worked in the music industry
for years. Many of them
have performed around
the country, cut albums,
sold songs to big acts, and
gig regularly. They bring
their know-how of the industry
to their students
by teaching them the elements
required to be a true
pro. Being a real musician
isn’t just about skill on an
instrument. Reading chord
charts, understanding song
structures, knowing how to
care for gear, how to book
a gig, projecting stage presence,
and much much more
are often overlooked skills.
Bit Space offers an opportunity to build real things
Summer camp at Bit
Space is week-long, project-based
learning for children
entering 1st through
12th grade. Each week,
we introduce a set of tools,
techniques, and materials
to each of three age
groups. Using the week’s
theme as a starting point,
campers work individually,
in small groups, or as
a team to create something
that explores, expresses,
and expands upon their
skill and creativity.
Bit Space is Chicagoland’s
premier maker lab
for kids and teens — a
place where they can learn
to use real tools to build
real things. Students work
with our guides to learn
how to use hand tools,
power tools, electronics,
robotics, 3D printers, laser
cutters, CNC milling
machines, computer modeling
and design software,
computer game development
software, virtual reality,
and new media to
design and build just about
anything. We try to live
up to our goal of inspiring
and guiding the next generation
of inventors, entrepreneurs,
and problem
solvers by teaching kids
and teens to be producers
rather than consumers
of technology. Our guides
are experts from the fields
of architecture, design, engineering,
and computer
programming.
Our youngest campers
learn to safely and effectively
use basic hand tools
and power tools in our
woodshop, become familiar
with 2D design software
and laser cutting, and
integrate basic circuitry
and motors into their projects.
Campers create individual
projects in a group
setting.
Our intermediate campers
take the next step in
their “making” journey
by being introduced to
programmable electronics
(Arduino), 3D modeling
software (Blender),
3D printing, video game
development (Unity 3D),
and video & sound editing
software. Campers work in
small groups and collaborate
to re-imagine the Inter-Act
Cube every week.
Our campers entering
their junior high and high
school years will determine
how they will engage
with the week’s theme and
choose where and how
they will make their contribution
to Friday’s exhibition.
There are very few
restrictions as to which
tools and technologies
they can use. Higher level
craftsmanship in physical
construction, virtual
reality technology, new
media, and real coding
skills are all on the table.
These campers are paired
with our most experienced
maker-educators to maximize
their potential.
Camp Jorn’s every day camp is an adventure
For more than 65 years,
Camp Jorn has provided
boys and girls the opportunity
to become part
of a special community
focused on character, values,
self-discovery and
independence. Camp Jorn
YMCA is situated on a
70+ acre peninsula in Wisconsin’s
Northwoods in
Manitowish Waters, Wis.
Camp Jorn YMCA has
made a commitment to
ensure a positive and safe
camping experience for
each child who attends our
summer program. Our focus
on character development
helps youth to grow
in the areas of our four
core values – caring, honesty,
respect and responsibility.
Campers range from
ages 8-17 in age. Camp
Jorn offers campers the
opportunity to stay for one
week or two weeks at a
time. At Camp Jorn, campers
will participate in three
instructional classes per
day. Other times are dedicated
to cabin activities.
The cabin group participates
in activities such as
trail rides, tubing, sailing,
cabin challenges, sports
and more. Evenings are a
blast! We have all-camp
activities such as campfires,
skits, games such as
Wells Fargo (think Capture
the Flag), Granny’s Candy,
Gold Rush and more. On
closing night we have our
Friendship Fire ceremony.
Teen programs include
TEVA (13-15 yr. olds) and
CIT (Counselor in Training
16+). TEVA offers
older campers increased
independence and responsibility,
with some familiarity
of traditional summer
camp. TEVA campers
reside in Camp Jorn’s Yurt
Village as a community.
TEVA campers spend part
of the day gaining leadership
skills through an
array of outdoor skills
lessons. Cabin activities
are focused on serviceleadership
and preparing
(training) for their wilderness
trip. Campers also
get the experience of outdoor
cooking in TEVA’s
own outdoor kitchen. Each
TEVA session includes the
opportunity to experience
a wilderness canoe or back
packing trip. TEVAs will
leave camp with a greater
sense of themselves and
skills to be a leader. CITs
will work closely with
members of the counseling
team and leadership staff
while going through training.
Their schedule will
consist of spending time
with our day camp and
resident camp programs
to gain group management
and youth development
skills through experiential
learning.
Camp Jorn does provide
scholarships to campers as
we never want anyone to
miss out on camp!
You won’t want to miss
Karzen family combines tennis and basketball day camps
The summer is a great
time to improve! Our
camps provide an enthusiastic,
positive playing
environment for students
to practice their technical
skills, learn how to compete,
and have fun as they
do it. With over 70 years
combined teaching experience,
Jerry and John Karzen
return to captain multiple
tennis and basketball
offerings for children of all
ages. (5-18 for tennis, 4-14
Soccer organization provides fun,
competitive environment for youth
American Youth Soccer
Organization (AYSO)
425 was founded when
the recreational soccer
leagues from Glencoe, Kenilworth,
Northfield and
Winnetka combined their
youth soccer programs and
joined AYSO.
Today, more than 1,200
children between the ages
of 4-14 participate in the
program. AYSO 425 is one
of the strongest AYSO regions
in the country.
AYSO is celebrating its
53rd year as the largest
youth soccer organization
in the USA. AYSO was established
in the Los Angeles
area in 1964 with nine
teams. It was the dream of
a group of devoted soccer
enthusiasts who started the
organization in a garage.
Today, AYSO has 50,000
teams and more than
500,000 players nationwide.
Its goal is to provide
world-class youth soccer
programs that enrich children’s
lives.
AYSO is supported by
125,000 volunteers. Parents
donate their time as
coaches, referees, team
parents, administrators and
sponsors. Along with being
a volunteer-run organization,
AYSO is a partnership
of the area parks
departments, schools and
the community.
As a youth sports organization,
AYSO recognizes
the importance of providing
a safe and healthy
atmosphere for children.
Over the years, AYSO has
created many valuable programs
and concepts. Most
notably, AYSO revolutionized
youth sports with its
Everyone Plays and Balanced
Teams philosophies.
In AYSO, each child
who registers is guaranteed
to play at least half of
every game. AYSO recognizes
that games are more
fun when the teams are
evenly matched, so teams
are balanced teams based
on each player’s skill level
and the overall ability of
the team.
AYSO 425 teams up
with international and
American professional
soccer trainers to provide
top notch soccer instruction
for AYSO’s players
and expand the programs
that AYSO 425
offers. Throughout the
year AYSO 425 provides
professional trainers with
fall and spring training
programs for all ages, team
coaching, coaches clinics
and after-school clinics.
AYSO’s camps for 2018
will run between July 16-
20 and Aug. 13-17.
Music Theater Works Summer Workshop builds
confidence on stage, with all students guaranteed parts
For the past 18 summers,
children from 8 to
13 have learned about musical
theater firsthand at
Music Theater Works in
Wilmette.
“I think it was Hannah
who convinced me we really
had a good thing going,”
recalls general manager
Bridget McDonough, when
asked about her favorite
memories of the company’s
summer workshop
programs. “Hannah was a
sassier, more self-assured
Nathan Detroit in “Guys
and Dolls” than any tenyear-old
little red-haired
girl had a right to be!
“I was flabbergasted
when I found out later
that on the first day of the
workshop, Hannah’s mom
approached our director to
say her daughter had never
been on stage before and
might need a little extra
coaching and coaxing to
get over her shyness. Believe
me, on stage that girl
was not shy!”
Performing offers so
many benefits to young
people: it builds confidence,
enhances observational
and analytical skills,
fosters teamwork and,
above all, is a lot of fun.
At Music Theater Works,
children get to sing, dance
and act, in a nurturing and
fun atmosphere. No experience
or audition is required,
and everyone gets
a part. “Our staff does a
wonderful job giving each
of the kids their moment to
shine, regardless of their
experience level,” says
McDonough.
Young people ages 8
to 13 learn from professional
teaching artists to
prepare a performance of
a mini-musical. “You’d be
amazed at what these kids
accomplish in only six
days,” McDonough says.
“I know Hannah’s parents
were!”
Five separate one-week
workshops will be offered
this summer, based
on popular musicals.
Each workshop is Monday
through Friday from
9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the
Music Theater Works rehearsal
center, 516 4th St.
in Wilmette. On Saturday,
students gather for a final
dress rehearsal at 1 p.m.
and offer a free public performance
for family and
friends at 4 p.m.
The 2019 schedule is
“Annie” July 8-13
“Fiddler on the Roof”
July 15-20
“Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat”
July 22-27
“Chitty Chitty Bang
Bang” July 29-August 3
“42nd Street” August
5-10
The fee is $425 per student
per workshop. Scholarships
are available based
on need.
In addition, a staged
summer teen production
of “How to Succeed in
Business Without Really
Trying” is offered for ages
13 to 18 (June 13-29, with
performance on June 29
at 7:30 p.m.). Each role
is individually cast from
auditions. The production
features professional costumes,
sound and lighting.
Fee is $1,325 per student.
How to pick the right camp for your kid
Staff Report
So you’ve decided to send
your child (or children) to camp?
Congratulations, but how do
you pick which one is best?
Well, it’s a matter of finding a
balance between finding a comfortable
place for your child and
challenging him or her with the
camp experience.
For example, let’s say you
have a girl who’s active, a big
Chicago Bulls fan and a good
player on her park district basketball
team. Basketball camp is
probably a good place for your
daughter to spend some of her
summer to develop her love for
the game; harness her shooting,
dribbling, passing and defensive
skills; make friends with similar
interests; and remain active during
her normal team’s offseason.
This is an example of a camp
that would be comfortable for
your daughter and her skill set.
But let’s also say she’s an
outdoorswoman-in-training. Although
she’s not a member of the
Girl Scouts of the United States
of America, she likes camping
and hiking when your family
vacations at national parks. It
would be a bit of a challenge to
send her to a canoeing, kayaking
and camping summer getaway
because it would test her homelearned
skills.
The key to finding the right
camp for your child is talking
with him or her to determine
what your kid wants to do for the
summer. You should sit down
and discuss about both sides’
goals for the school break.
Maybe presenting pamphlets
from several possible camps —
ranging from more comfortable
options in line with your child’s
interests to camps that would be
more outside your kid’s comfort
zone — and hashing out where
your child stands on the matter
is best. Having all the possible
information in front of the whole
family is key.
Also, consult with the parents
of your child’s friends to see if
it’s possible to send your kid to
the same camp as theirs. This
way, you can more easily challenge
your child with the type of
camp while keeping a semblance
of comfort by means of your
kid’s friends their for support
and camaraderie.
There could be another path:
Perhaps your kid doesn’t want to
go to camp at all. There’s always
the old saying that kids might
be kicking and screaming when
they show up and camp, but
when parents come to pick them
up, they don;t want to leave.
This adage is nice and all, and
sometimes it is the case that kids
end up loving the camp they
dreaded at the beginning of the
summer. But it might not be the
best idea to force your child into
weeks of a camp he or she really
doesn’t want to attend.
Again, family discussion is
probably the best course here.
At any rate, just make sure to
not send you child to any summertime
retreat called Camp
Crystal Lake.
SNAP’s maintaining structure in a free environment
Each summer kids run
wild and free, but can
have trouble adjusting
back to a classroom environment
when school
rolls around each fall.
Additionally, without
school, kids no longer
have art classes incorporated
into their daily
schedule and the lack of a
creative outlet can pose a
real problem to maintaining
well-rounded development.
Lastly, a physical
release is integral to
keeping kids healthy in
mind and body. Summer
camps are great at
creating structure over
the summer, but often
fall short in developing
classroom discipline and
providing both a physical
and creative outlet.
One type of camp, however,
holds up in all three
categories - dance camp!
This summer, give your
kids the gift of dance by
registering for one of
Studio North Academy of
the Performing Arts’ various
summer programs,
carefully crafted to help
your child succeed. For
your littlest ones, there’s
Flowers, Fairies, and
Princesses, where teachers
combine arts and
dance. Students ages 3 to
6 will get to explore Ballet,
Tap and Jazz as well
as execute daily art projects.
This camp is offered
the week of August 12th,
and you can choose a
morning or afternoon session.
On Your Toes Camp
is a performance-oriented
program intended for students
from 7 to 13. In the
mornings, students will
take Ballet, Jazz, Modern,
or Lyrical with a rotating
set of instructors, allowing
them to experience
a variety of dance and
teaching styles. These
back-to-back classes
will help students work
their ability to focus, a
skill vital to a successful
academic year. In the
afternoon, dancers will
work on various pieces,
culminating in a performance
every Friday!
In addition to working
in the beautiful studios,
dancers will be given 90
minutes between classes
and rehearsal to soak in
the great outdoors; eating
lunch, playing, and
often rehearsing their
“Kids’ Dance” - the ultimate
creative outlet. You
can register for On Your
Toes Camp by the week
or session (8 weeks)!
Lastly, for the advanced
dancer, ages 13 and up,
SNAP offers week-long
Intensives that will train
your child both artistically
and physically.
They will study various
styles of concert dance,
each providing their own
unique scope of valuable
skills. Summer is a great
time to relax, but is also
a great opportunity to
further your child’s artistic
and physical potential
keep them sharp for the
coming year. This summer,
keep your child’s
development on track
with SNAP’s Summer
Programs!
Expo provides ‘onestop
shop for families’
Eric DeGrechie, Managing Editor
Since 2015, the North Shore Camp
Expo has served as the perfect spot for
those seeking information about all things
camp.
“We’ve watched it grow each year in
popularity,” said Heather Warthen, chief
events officer of organizer 22nd Century
Media. “We love being able to offer a
one-stop shop for families that may be
searching for the right camp or opportunity
for their child.”
For the second straight year, the expo
will be held at Northbrook Court, 1515
Lake Cook Road, in the lower level of
Macy’s Court. The fun runs from 10 a.m.-
2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23. This event will
offer camps — both day and overnight
from across the Midwest region — a
chance to meet potential camp attendees
and for local businesses to connect with
camping families.
“Attendees will be able to find information
on both day and overnight camps as
well as local businesses that target children
and their families,” Warthen said.
“We wanted everything to be in one central
location this year. We also have a
great variety of camps including sports
and the arts so there is definitely something
for every child.”
The expo is sponsored by Banner Day
Camp and Lake Forest Academy. A free
bag is available for the first 200 Camp
Expo attendees. Free face painting and
balloon animals runs from 10:30 a.m.-
1:30 p.m. There will also be a free photo
booth sponsored by PlayGround Games.
The event is free to attend. For more
Top-ranked Christian Heritage Academy in Northfield offers
distinctly Christian summer camps
For 35 years, CHA has
integrated faith with academic
excellence, serving
thousands of families from
northern Chicagoland with
an exemplary Christian
education for Preschool to
12th grade.
Ranked #1 in Illinois.
CHA’s early education
programs offer age-appropriate,
research-based
learning experiences,
focused on nurturing a
child’s faith, curiosity and
love of learning. Academic
rigor continues through
all grades, earning CHA
the ranking of #1 Best
Christian High School two
years in a row by Niche.
com, an independent ranking
agency. This rating is
based on high standardized
test scores and college
acceptances, including
University of Chicago,
Northwestern University,
Duke University, University
of Illinois (Urbana-
Champaign), Purdue University,
Wheaton College,
and Calvin College.
33 Summer Camps.
CHA brings this high level
of excellence to its full
range of summer camps
for Preschool-12th grade.
ATHLETIC CAMPS include
basketball, volleyball,
soccer, as well as
Strength & Conditioning
camps taught by Tommy
Christian, one of the nation’s
top sports performance
coaches, from the
Northwestern University
football team. Arts camps
include music, drama,
Broadway and filmmaking.
Others include American
Law, Languages, and
Speech & Parliamentary
Debate, led by coaches
who have for years led students
to national championships.
STEAM Camps! CHA’s
Early Education Department
will offer the popular
STEAM Summer Camps
for 3-8 year-olds again.
This highly creative camp
offers weeks focusing on
science experiments, coding,
robotics, engineering,
art and more. Camp
Director Kathy Severson
states, “As an early education
professional, I desire
to see children practice
literacy, math, science
and the arts in hands-on,
high-interest ways. Our
STEAM camp activities
integrate research with favorite
childhood activities
of old, to create intentional
learning opportunities that
will nurture your child’s
curiosity and build great
summer memories.”
“Distinctly Christian.”
What makes the CHA experience
unique is that its
programs are taught by
qualified teachers who are
Christian role models in
faith and life. Shirley Lee
of Glenview remarked regarding
her child’s camp
experience, “It is so rare
to find a group of individuals
who care and love
these kids in such a godly
manner.” The result of this
unique approach over the
course of a student’s life...
is fully equipped followers
of Christ who excel in not
only in academics, arts and
athletics, but in character,
leadership and service to
their community and to the
world.
Try new things, make new friends, have fun this
summer with the Glenview Park District
Put down the technology
and get ready for a funfilled
summer at the Glenview
Park District. It’s
time for our youngest residents
to try something different,
make new friendships,
gain a new hobby,
explore the outdoors and
make wonderful memories
in the sun. Glenview Park
District staff members provide
an environment that
encourages kids to step
out of their comfort zone
and build self-esteem in
an enjoyable environment.
The best summer camps
provide the perfect combination
of adventure, fun,
friendship and safety, and
it’s all right here.
The Summer Camps
brochure is a great place
to start. We encourage
parents to browse through
the offerings together with
their children. What sparks
their interest? Which ones
are they curious about?
Talk about it, then sign
up and get ready for an
exciting experience. Day
camps feature all the best
of summer like swimming,
sports, arts and crafts, theatre,
counselor-in-training
programs, theme days,
outdoor games, farming
and plenty of mental and
physical activities.
New this year is Camp
Willowbrook! It’s designed
for students of
Glenview/Northbrook
School District 30 whose
classroom time ends earlier
in the season and extends
later into the summer
due to the building
of the new Maple School.
Campers can also sign up
for before and after care at
the Northbrook Park District.
We’ll have a bus to
get students from Northbrook
to Glenview. Summer
Explorers is another
new camp which features
a longer day for ages 5-6.
These campers spend the
majority of their day outdoors
with age appropriate
activities and themes.
We will be entering our
second year of Summer
Enrichment in partnership
with Glenview School
District 34. The Glenview
Park District is thrilled to
present these classes once
again and work with so
many talented teachers
from District 34. It’s going
to be a good time with programs
like these: Create a
Character, Hooked on Crochet,
Math Madness, Outdoor
Adventures, Tabletop
Board Gaming and Higher
Level Basketball Skills.
Sports-minded kids
have a lot of opportunities
here. We offer everything
from lacrosse to baseball,
football, volleyball, poms,
dance, tumbling, cheerleading,
tennis, golf and
paddle tennis.
If it’s technology they’re
seeking, check out these
titles: Robotics & Visual
Programming, Coding &
Game Design and Camp
Hollywood for Super Heroes.
There is no shortage
of classes for the Young
Rembrandt. We will be
teaching little artists to
draw zoo animals, postersized
ice cream cones, enchanted
forests and dragons
with pastel chalks.
Sign up for half-day and
full-day camps ranging in
length from two to five
days a week. Among our
new camp offerings: Summer
Explorers for ages 5-6
and Center Studio Dance
Camp for ages 6-13. Doors
will open early this year.
We’ll begin checking
campers in 10 minutes
before camp begins each
day to allow more time for
camp activities. Hope to
see you there!
Great tips for an outdoor winter adventure
StatePoint
There’s no need to resign
yourself to the gym all winter
long. Outdoor adventures
are the perfect way to
stay fit and have fun, even
during the chilliest months
of the year.
All it takes to stay comfortable
is the right gear and
a bit of preparation. With
that in mind, check out these
tips for a great season.
• Get an Early Start: Remember
that winter
means early sunsets. So,
get your journey started
early in the morning to
take advantage of the limited
sunlight. Plan your
hike or other outdoor adventure
carefully, knowing
how long you expect
it to take and be sure your
pack includes a flashlight
or headlamp. In the event
you are still on the trail
as the sun sets, you’ll be
happy you did.
• Stretch: Before getting
started, be sure to give
your muscles time to
warm up. To avoid injury,
it is always important
to do a dynamic stretch
workout before embarking
on a workout, but it
becomes especially important
in cold weather.
• Stay Informed: High-quality
wearable tech is crucial
for today’s outdoor enthusiast.
Seek out a durable
watch specifically designed
to help you make
the most of outdoor sports.
The WSD-F20AGN from
Casio, boasts a variety
of popular outdoors and
sports apps, including
ViewRanger, Hole19, Ski
Tracks, and more. Additional
features include
water resistance up to 50
meters, a digital compass,
altimeter, barometer and
an activity tracker. And
with Wear OS by Google
technology, you can use
your timepiece to learn
about your surroundings
and support you in the
things you want to do, for
a safer, more connected
journey.
• Cover Up: You may be
working up heat but
you’ll still want to keep
your head, fingers and
toes well-protected in
cold weather temperatures.
These are the areas
of the body most vulnerable
to frost bite. Select
socks, gloves and a hat
specifically designed for
sports that offers moisture
wicking, comfort and
warmth. Be aware of the
signs of frostbite and take
care to get indoors at the
earliest sign.
This winter, don’t shy
away from the great outdoors.
A little preparation
can help you make the
most of an outdoor adventure.
First aid tips for campers
Eric DeGrechie, Managing Editor
Camping can be an especially rewarding
activity for children and families
alike, but amidst the fun is serious
potential for dangerous situations.
The American Red Cross of Northern
Illinois understands this firsthand.
The agency serves more than 9.5 million
people in northern Illinois. It is
made up of more than 4,000 volunteers,
who locally respond to 1,200
disasters every year and teach more
than a quarter million people in Chicagoland
health, safety and disaster
preparedness skills.
Whether you’re sending your children
off to summer camp or heading
out to the woods for a family camping
trip, it’s very important to have
a well-stocked first aid kit in case of
emergencies.
First aid kits come in many shapes
and sizes. The Red Cross suggests
people should keep a first aid kit in
their home and car. They also say to
carry a first aid kit with you or know
where you can find one. It is also important
to find out the location of first
aid kits where you work.
First aid kits are available for purchase
at the American Red Cross of
Northern Illinois headquarters, The
Rauner Center, 2200 W. Harrison St.,
Chicago, IL 60612. To learn more
about the local chapter, visit www.
