Clyde clydeohio.org In the 1700’s, the area of Sandusky County currently known as Clyde was inhabited by the Wyandot Indian tribe. However, it wasn’t until 1813 that the first American settlers arrived in the area, seven years before the county of Sandusky was established. By the early 1890’s, the city of Clyde had become home to the Elmore Manufacturing Company, a producer of veteran and brass era automobiles and bicycles. In 1909, the company was taken over by General Motors and was relocated to Detroit a decade later. Louis Krebs resigned from Elmore before the takeover and, once the company had moved to the north, decided to use the vacant facility to open his own business which later became the Clydesdale Motor Truck Company. The buildings, which were owned by Clyde Porcelain Steel, burned down in 1945. After that, the Whirlpool Corporation purchased Clyde Porcelain Steel and, in 1952, began producing washing machines. Currently, this plant is the largest producer of washing machines in the world and produces both top and front-load washers. Whirlpool Clyde Sanduskycounty.org Page 18

McPherson Clyde is also well known as the home of General James Birdseye McPherson, the highest-ranking senior officer killed in the Civil War. His childhood home, located on the corner of Maple Street and McPherson Highway, is open for tours by appointment. The Clyde Museum, a jewel of history and wealth of information, has an extensive collection on Sherwood Anderson, an author who wrote the short story collection “Winesburg, Ohio” in 1919. These stories are loosely based on his years of growing up in Clyde. While traveling around Clyde, it is evident that the city has embraced the Winesburg theme!
