Phishing scams 

Dear Readers, 

This month I want to take a look at phishing emails. There has been a large increase of 

spam and phishing mail lately, mostly from Apple or Amazon, and I want to help you to 

spot them. The people who send these emails are trying to con you out of money, and they 

are getting clever! My mum received one only last week and even I struggled to see it was 

a phishing scam. 

So let’s start with Apple emails. These claim to be from Apple and generally have the same 

style to them, saying your account is suspended and asking you to open an attachment or 

click on a link to verify information. It is generally not the attachment which is the issue 

but where that attachment then asks you to go, normally a website that “looks” like 

Apple's website, but is nothing like it behind the scenes. Then once you submit all the 

information which claims to be for your account, it redirects you to the actual Apple site, so 

you would be none the wiser. But now they have your details including any security 

questions you may have answered giving them the answers they need to reset your 

password and use your account. 

The email from Amazon was so good that I really struggled to find the chink. It looked like 

a normal Amazon confirmation email, the font, the colours, everything about it. Even the 

sent name Amazon.co.uk however, it was only when I 

clicked on the name that I saw the part, was actually hiding 

a very strange email address that was not Amazon. I then checked a little further, and the 

link half way down the page to Cancel the order, again went to a very different location, 

away from Amazon. 

What can these companies do? The bottom line is nothing. Amazon, Apple, and all the 

other legitimate companies spend a lot of time and money trying to find solutions to these 

scam emails and shut the operators down, but as quick as they shut one down, another 

ten will start up. What can we, as customers, do? If you know you have ordered a new 

kettle, and the email shows a new kettle, and you know you went to the right site, then it is 

probably OK. If however it says that you ordered a new iPhone X, but you know you didn't, 

check! Don't click on the links in the email but instead go to the site it claims to be from. 

Type in the address yourself and then check your recent purchase history. If it shows you 

ordered an Iphone X then change your password straight away as your account may have 

been compromised. 

I hope this short insight has helped. I did receive an email from Jeremy regarding an 

Outlook problem with Windows 10 but I was pleased to learn his problem had been 

resolved without my assistance.

Lyn Health Medical and Minor Injury Services News 

New Prescribing Guidance – REMINDER Patients are advised that, as per recent 

guidance from NHS England, the GP’s will no longer be able to provide an NHS 

prescription for the treatment of the conditions in the list below but will direct patients 

to purchase over the counter medicines from the Pharmacy. If, as a result of taking 

these, the condition has not improved the GP will consider what alternatives are 

available which may result in the issuing of a prescription. 

NHS England Guidance to reduce the Prescribing of ‘over the counter’ medicines for 

minor health conditions NHS England has published guidance to primary care 

prescribers to not routinely prescribe over the counter medicines for 35 common 

conditions that fall into one of the following categories: 

A self-limiting condition that does not require any medical advice or treatment as it 

will clear up on its own, such as sore throats, coughs, colds and viruses. 

A minor illness that is suitable for self-care and can be treated with items that can be 

purchased over the counter from a pharmacy. These conditions include, for example, 

indigestion, mouth ulcers and warts and verrucae.

Conjunctivitis 

Infrequent cold sores of the lip 

Mouth ulcers 

Coughs, colds and nasal congestion

Cauliflowers, leeks, kale and other winter veg are in short supply 

after heavy rainfall in late autumn ended the British growing 

season ahead of schedule. Luckily, we still have classic British root 

vegetables to fall back on. Curries are a really good way to use up vegetables. Eat with boiled rice or warm naan 

bread, and pickle or chutney. Here is a curry recipe to make the most of organic roots: 

Parsnip, Cauliflower & Chickpea Korma, serves 2 - 3 

2 tbsp groundnut oil 

1 onion, finely chopped 

2 garlic cloves, very finely chopped 

2.5cm (1 inch) piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated 

2 tsp medium–hot curry powder 

2 tsp ground cumin 

2 parsnips (about 300g / 10oz), peeled and cut into 1cm chunks 

400ml can coconut milk 

400ml can chickpeas, drained 

50g (2oz) ground almonds 

1 cauliflower (about 850g/30oz), cut into large florets 

juice of 1 lime 

1 bunch fresh coriander, roughly chopped 

salt and black pepper 

1. Heat the oil in large heavy-bottomed pan then add the onion and fry, stirring occasionally over medium to low 

heat for about 10 minutes until soft and translucent. 

2. Add the garlic and ginger and cook for a minute then add the curry powder, cumin and a good pinch of salt. 

3. Gently stir in the parsnips and cook for a further minute. 

4. Add the coconut milk, chickpeas and ground almonds, cover with a lid and cook at a gentle boil for 10 

minutes. Check the seasoning, adding more salt and pepper if needed. 

5. Add the cauliflower then cover again and cook for a further 5 minutes or so until the cauliflower is just 

tender. Sprinkle the lime juice over the curry and stir in the coriander.

New facility heralds the end of dustbin waste going to 

landfill in Devon 

A new waste transfer station at Brynsworthy, 

Barnstaple became fully operational in 

February. 

The new facility will enable Devon County 

Council to bulk up and transfer non-recyclable 

‘wheelie bin/black bag’ waste collected in the 

North Devon and Torridge areas away from 

landfill to Energy from Waste facilities where it 

is converted into electricity. 

The new facility marks the end of household ‘black bag’ waste being sent to landfill in 

the county of Devon. 

This type of waste elsewhere in Devon is already being sent to either the Exeter Energy 

Recovery Facility or the Devonport Energy from Waste Combined Heat & Power Facility 

where it too is used as a fuel to generate energy. 

The facility was built and will be operated for DCC by SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK 

Ltd.

Help Victims of Domestic Abuse - Start saving lives now Lynton Police are looking for local businesses 

to assist in a campaign to help stop domestic violence. We will be holding an awareness meeting in 

the Jubilee room, Town Hall, Lynton on the 20 March at 5.30pm, full information on how you can help 

will be given. We are not asking you to provide counselling, we are looking for local businesses and 

services to assist with the J9 Initiative to stop domestic abuse. Leaflets, J9 Information packs and a J9 

sticker can be distributed to shops and businesses in the area to put on display for people to obtain 

contact details so they can get help. Many victims live with domestic abuse, and many die at the 

hands of their abusers. J9 is named in memory of Janine Mundy who was tragically murdered by her 

husband on 27 June 2003 in Camborne, he strangled her in front of their two sons. If you would like to 

help but haven’t received an invitation from Grace, please do still come along. RSVP PCSO Grace 

Cleverdon by 5pm 15th March for refreshment numbers. PLEASE HELP if you can. 

Driving on Country Roads The best drivers read the road ahead and anticipate potential hazards so 

brake before the bend, not on it. Look out for hidden dips, blind summits and concealed entrances. 

Country roads often have sharp bends. Overgrown verges, bushes and trees on country roads can 

block your view and potentially obscure an oncoming hazard. Always drive at a speed which will allow 

you to stop in the distance you can see to be clear (double that on a single track road). Allow more 

time to stop on wet or slippery surfaces. The speed limit is a limit not a target. If you get stuck behind 

a slow moving vehicle, be patient. Dips in roads, bends and other junctions joining your road often 

hide oncoming vehicles, so unless it's absolutely essential, don't overtake. If passing more vulnerable 

road users such as horse riders, cyclists and walkers, pass wide and slow.

Wintry weather in Lynton Bill Pryor 



News from the Exmoor Pony Centre 

Ashwick, Dulverton TA22 9QE 

In January we had the first snowfall of the year over Exmoor, and let’s hope we don’t 

have another Beast from the East! Not that the weather bothers our hardy Exmoor 

ponies. This year’s intake of foals, all named for varieties of cheese, are thriving and 

responding well to handling and many have already been neutered. 

We currently have 11 riding ponies at the Centre but all are now getting older. Kate 

will be 26 this year and still needs to be ridden but has been removed from the 

adoption scheme. We are moving on with preparing new riding ponies. Buttons and 

Thistle are currently being backed. Pascoe and Jensen have been having more 

intensive training at an indoor school and are now being ridden on the open moor. 

Both are progressing really well and Jensen is now also available for adoption. 

We have some lovely youngsters looking for foster 

homes. Pip and Magpie (seen in the photo with Linzi 

and Lydia) and Sprite have all been gelded and 

handled. They are lovely friendly, easy to catch ponies.

Our last quiz night at The Sportsman’s Inn at Sandyway was so popular, we are 

holding another on 29 th March at 7pm. Tickets are £12 to include carvery. For more

'Unprofessional Mermaids' are fast becoming something of a local institution, much the 

same as the Valley-of-Rocks goats and lardy cake. Their latest outing was the Burns 

night celebrations at the 'Bath'. Comprising members of the old 'Dead Kite' they are 

inevitably a brilliant outfit with more musical and vocal talent than seems fair. Being a 

celebration with more than a touch of Scotland about it they naturally had to add a bit 

of tartan, some Scottish songs, lots of shouts of 'Och the noo' and 'More whiskey' and 

lots – and - lots of drinking. It was an appropriately jolly night with everyone joining in 

whether appropriate or not. I am not sure whether a lot of the lads there had attended 

in the hope of seeing 5 gorgeous girls clad only in fish-tails and bits of seaweed. 

Unfortunately there was not a hint of mermaid, just 5 gorgeous girls putting on some 

great musical entertainment. 

One of the great things about being a teenager in the sixties was being around when 

the musical scene was thriving. Everybody and his dog was intent on being a famous 

musician. I lived near Ongar; the last station on the London underground. The Soho 

jazz clubs were only an hour away and the music was pushed along by amazing 

players who seemed to fill every nook and cranny with the greatest jazz in the World. 

Ronnie Scott's club was my favourite venue and just a few bars of modern jazz takes 

me back. 

It was so good to see our Town Hall well attended by people 

keen to hear the remarkable ‘Neil Maya Jazz Quartet'. We 

all delighted in hearing some great modern jazz played in 

a mellow style more akin to Stan Getz than Charlie Parker. 

Parker, or 'Bird' was a fiery and, sadly, drug fuelled genius 

who stood musical culture on its head and attuned our ears http://neilmaya.co.uk 

to the delights of seemingly inharmonious notes. Sometimes people find way-out 

modern jazz a bit over the top. Neil Maya's quartet, although indisputably modern 

jazz, has the jagged edges gently sanded down so the overall sound is more mellow 

and relaxing. They are a great outfit and it's wonderful to see the town hall event 

organisers getting such a wide range of cultural delights. This is obviously the way 

forward for the place. Over the next few months they have arranged a good variety of 

artists so make sure you go along when you can and give them your full support.

Minehead’s first literary festival 

to take place on 27 April 2019 

Minehead Literary Festival will take place on Saturday April 27 at the Methodist Hall, Minehead, 

featuring presentations by four leading writers with ties to the area who will explore the importance 

of place in their writing. 

Speaking at the festival will be one of the country’s foremost writers of novels and short stories Tessa Hadley, 

winner of the 2018 Edge Hill Short Story Prize and author of critically-acclaimed novels Clever Girl, The London 

Train and The Past. Tessa Hadley has just published her seventh novel Late in the Day to rave reviews hailing 

her as ‘one of Britain’s finest writer of contemporary fiction’ (Thea Lenarduzzi, Vogue). She is joined by BBC radio 

producer, writer and bird watcher Tim Dee, whose new book Landfill is about how rubbish tips sustain bird life, 

and Pamela Holmes, best-selling author of first novel The Huntingfield Paintress and winner of the Jane Austen 

Short Story Award in 2014. Popular local writer and ‘the best contemporary writer of pony stories around’ Victoria 

Eveleigh will be giving a special illustrated presentation about her much-loved series of children’s books. 

A writing competition, with separate classes for adults and children, is being organised in the run-up to the 

festival, and an art exhibition will run from April 2 to May 6 at the Regal Theatre and Toucan Wholefoods to 

celebrate Minehead Literary Festival, featuring work by local artists Jo Minoprio, Leo Davey and Pauline Clyde 

and focusing on the theme of the importance of place. 

Catering for Minehead Literary Festival will be provided by Toucan Wholefoods and tickets may be booked in 

advance for the individual events or for the full one-day festival.

As part of the Minehead Literary Festival a short story competition with separate classes for adults 

and children is being organised in advance of the festival. 

The children’s competition is organised by West Somerset Academies Trust and supported by the local creative 

writing group Café Write. 

Children aged between 5 and 9 years old are invited to write a short, illustrated story or poem of no more 

than 250 words, entitled ‘The Magic Train’. 

Children aged 10 to 15 years old are invited to compose a short story or poem of up to 500 words with the 

theme ‘The Day all the Teachers Disappeared’. 

The theme for adults (16+) is ‘Minehead: Gateway to Exmoor’ and this competition is run in collaboration 

with the creative writing group, Minehead Writers. Type-written entries of no more than 500 words are invited 

from those aged 16 and over, and may be either prose or poetry. 

Only one entry for each competitor should be submitted, providing name, age (optional in the adult class) and 

contact details on a separate sheet, to ensure judging anonymity. 

All children’s entries should be sent either by email to mineheadliteraryfestival@gmail.com or by post to West 

Somerset Academies Trust, Minehead Middle School, Ponsford Road, Minehead TA24 5RH (and marked ‘Literary 

Competition’). Adult entries should be sent by email to mineheadliteraryfestival@gmail.com or by post to Literary 

Festival Competition, 2 Hillview Road, Minehead TA24 8EG. 

All entries must be received no later than March 31, 2019. The adult class will be judged by festival speaker and 

‘one of Britain’s finest writer of contemporary fiction’ Tessa Hadley, and the judge for the two children’s classes will 

be the author of much-loved children’s books Victoria Eveleigh. 

Winners will be announced at Minehead Literary Festival on the April 27 and winning entries will be published in the 

West Somerset Free Press and displayed in Minehead Library.

Lynton & Lynmouth AFC Reunion 

Lynton & Lynmouth AFC recently held a reunion for players at Rock House, Lynmouth. 

The evening was attended by 95 past and present players, supporters and officials. 

The youngest to attend was 23 year old Ryan Leaworthy who currently plays for 

Lynton and the oldest was Roy Pugsley, 88, who started playing in 1948. 

Memories flowed of League Championship winning seasons as well as Holman Cup, 

Combe Martin Cup, Braunton Cup and Arlington Cup wins. A football was donated by 

Neil Shires and signed by all players in attendance and will be displayed in the new 

clubhouse once complete. There were old team shirts on display, photos dating back 

to the 1900’s and an amazing raffle organised by Tracey Robinson and Sally Woodley. 

The event raised a staggering £693.14 for club funds and special thanks go to Claire 

and Tony Vickery of Rock House Lynmouth and their staff, for accommodating the 

event and laying on such a fantastic spread. 

We hope to organise another event in the not too distant future so please follow 

Lynton & Lynmouth FC on Facebook for more information. In the meantime if anyone 

has any old photographs, newspaper clippings or even an old team shirt lurking in a 

cupboard that they would like to donate then please contact Steve Hobbs via the
