HPHS Robotics had a strong showing at the Illinois State Tournament this weekend, February 24, 2019. In my first year as a community newsman, a role I was not yet sure suited me, I got a call from a troubled woman. She told me that one morning the month prior her husband — a relatively young, vibrant middleaged man — didn’t wake up. With the breakfast table set, the kids patiently waiting, the coffee steaming hot, the man of the house never walked down the stairs. In his sleep, to the shock of all, he slipped into a coma. As medical bills piled up like leaves, the family of humble means decided to raffle off the husband’s prize possession: a rehabbed motorcycle. So, for the newspaper, a sister of The Highland Park Landmark, I wrote about it. I got another call from the woman afterward. Not only did the family receive more than enough entries to hold the raffle, but also, the winner gave the bike back to its owner. Local news mattered then. Local news matters now. From the Editor Happy birthday to The Landmark Erin Yarnall Editor February was a big month for The Highland Park Landmark. While we continued our day-to-day jobs of bringing you the news you need to know about Highland Park and Highwood, we also celebrated a big birthday — as of Feb. 27, The Landmark is five years old. go figure 171 It’s strange to think of how fast five years goes by, and how much can change in that time frame. In the past five years, of which I’ve been writing for the paper for the past two-and-a-half, we’ve evolved and improved, and I feel lucky to have been the paper’s editor for the past 10 months — especially in this exciting sesquicentennial year. As I’m sure you’ve noticed on our front cover, The Landmark is taking a step forward and moving to a subscription model. Here’s to the next five years (and many more after) of providing the Highland Park and Highwood communities with local news.
