author’s note<br />
I wrote this story as fictionally as possible, but the truth is: this<br />
happened to me. Exactly the way described. I wrote this story<br />
to capture that feeling of fear, and that feeling of overcoming,<br />
and most importantly, the feeling of courage you get when<br />
someone takes a moment to notice you, and give you some<br />
encouragement. Sometimes the things you must overcome are<br />
so small they seem silly in hindsight—but at the time, it was so<br />
important. So let’s not look down on those small steps—either<br />
our own, or anyone else’s.<br />
