A G r i c u L t u r e E C A r e v i e w 3” wide version “In it for the right reasons”: Horner talks platform development Advertorial Drumheller-Stettler Constituency United Conservative Party (UCP) candidate, Nate Horner, is no stranger to the East Central region. He works as a cattle rancher near Pollockville, Ab. raising two children with his wife, Jennifer. He has passion for both people and problem solving which was more evident as the UCP amalgamation became a reality after the NDP gained power. Horner attended constituency meetings for both the Wildrose and PC’s in an effort to begin the amalgamation process in the area but to no avail. As Jason Kenney, UCP’s current leader, entered the spotlight with his plan for Alberta, Horner became further invested as he agreed with what was being proposed. He began by sitting as a director on the inaugural UCP board for Drumheller-Stettler. “For me the worry was when I witnessed a lot of friends leave the province due to the downturn, in rural areas I think the problem is magnified. It’s troubling,” began Horner. Policy, over regulation and noncompetitive tax environment is what the UCP believes is the root of the issue when it comes to the oil and gas sector’s continuous economic struggle. Horner is excited about the platform the party is slowly introducing. So far, if elected, the party plans to repeal the Carbon Tax and Bill 6, end subsidies for wind and solar, ban floor crossing, engage voter recall, give free votes for MLAs, decentralizing some important resources, and review and refrain from cutting frontline services in departments like Should have a ‘big’ say Cont’d from Pg 6 Almost 70 per cent of the seats in the House of Commons is decided by Canadians living east of Manitoba. 4.) What if a majority (over 50 per cent), voted “no”? Those “rejected ballot” results could no longer be ignored. It would be a resounding vote of “non-confidence”, by Albertans, as to how Canada is governed. Our Alberta premier could then use those results to negotiate more aggressively on behalf of all Albertans. 5.) Just be Albertan. It’s not unachievable.” One of the newest initiatives is the Job Creation Tax Cut which is meant to make Alberta one of the most competitive jurisdictions in North America; an attractive, desirable place to start a business and subsequently create jobs. Kenney felt this initiative would encourage nationally based businesses and make Alberta the number one destination for growth while competing against the United States. The in-depth plan for alleviating rural crime is expected to be released soon but for the time being Horner shared, “It’s going to involve better funding in certain aspects of the judicial system. Most of these cases involve repeat offenders and are drug related. Rural crime is the symptom, a brutal economy is the disease.” The party hopes to re-allocate funds for the Rural Crime Plan to combat this issue as well. When asked about his family’s historical political involvement, Horner said “I should know enough to stay out of it but, I feel compelled to try and help, compelled to serve. Since the amalgamation of the Wildrose Party and PC Party 22 months ago, the AAP Burns was born and has been attempting to gain traction across the province ever since. Marilyn Burns, the leader of the party along with supporters occupied the Stettler Canalta Hotel on Tues. Feb. 26 to get the word out about their platform and their mission. “The reason for our existence is that we want to elect MLAs that will advance the policies and principles and constitution of our party,” began Burns. “Secondly, we want to advance a compassionate and self-reliant society and thirdly promote individual freedom for all citizens. We want to have a prudent, effective, accountable and trustworthy government.” Music Festival adjudicators Burns is an Edmonton based lawyer and mother of four with a background in rural Alberta. She was a co-founder of the Wildrose Party in 2008. The party’s commitment to Albertans starts with an issue by issue take on the traditional system and supports member driven decisions. Their platform includes topics like government integrity, education, agriculture and equalization. In order to become a member, they must agree to these principles and objective. Any five members can bring a policy revision forward which can be voted on by all members at their Annual General Meeting. Approximately 50 members gathered after the UCP amalgamation to create the AAP to reflect their own ideals as they felt the merge was not well-intentioned. “We recognized that this was a merge based on deception and deceit and dishonesty. “We did not want to go that direction so we got together and agreed that if the merge vote happened, then we would start a new party,” said Burns. The AAP has been identified by others as centre right and populist along the political spectrum. “I don’t consider ourselves to be on that spectrum because we take issue by issue. I think other people might consider us centre right and populist,” said Burns. “Populist simply means we listen to the people. I don’t like that left-right paradigm. I think you need to look at things issue by issue. We are here for the people of Alberta. Alberta is our priority.” The party is seeking a nominee in the Drumheller- Stettler Constituency but they do have a constituency association board up and running.
