conference broke up, and the breach rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

unclosed.<br />

This was a terrible complication. Noth<strong>in</strong>g but a<br />

united and bold policy, Zw<strong>in</strong>gli saw, could<br />

extricate them from it. But <strong>in</strong>stead of this, the<br />

Council of Zurich was every day display<strong>in</strong>g greater<br />

vacillation and feebleness. The lukewarm and timid<br />

were desert<strong>in</strong>g the Reform, its old enemies were<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> rais<strong>in</strong>g their heads. Courage and patriotism<br />

were lack<strong>in</strong>g to meet the ire of the mounta<strong>in</strong>eers,<br />

roused by the half-measures which had been<br />

adopted. Ru<strong>in</strong> was com<strong>in</strong>g on apace. The burden of<br />

the State rested on Zw<strong>in</strong>gli; he felt he could no<br />

longer accept a position <strong>in</strong> which he was<br />

responsible for evils which were ma<strong>in</strong>ly ow<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

the rejection of those measures he had counseled.<br />

He appeared before the Great Council on the 26th<br />

of July, 1531, and, with a voice chok<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

emotion, said: "For eleven years I have preached<br />

the Gospel among you, and warned you of the<br />

dangers that would threaten the Confederacy if the<br />
