immersed <strong>in</strong> darkness, but dest<strong>in</strong>ed soon to become<br />
the brightest lum<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong> that brilliant constellation,<br />
was the light travell<strong>in</strong>g. But the mounta<strong>in</strong>s of the<br />
Oberland, which are the first to catch the natural<br />
day, and to flash their early fires all over<br />
<strong>Switzerland</strong>, were the last to be touched with the<br />
Reformed dawn now ris<strong>in</strong>g on Christendom. With<br />
the light brighten<strong>in</strong>g all round, they rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the<br />
darkness.<br />
The herdsmen of these cantons saw with grief<br />
and alarm the transformation which was pass<strong>in</strong>g<br />
upon their country. The glory was depart<strong>in</strong>g from<br />
it. They felt only horror as messenger after<br />
messenger arrived <strong>in</strong> their mounta<strong>in</strong>s and told them<br />
what was transact<strong>in</strong>g on the pla<strong>in</strong>s below; that the<br />
altars at which their fathers had worshipped were<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g cast down; that the images to which they had<br />
bent the knee were be<strong>in</strong>g flung <strong>in</strong>to the flames; that<br />
priest and monk were be<strong>in</strong>g chased away; that the<br />
light of holy taper was be<strong>in</strong>g ext<strong>in</strong>guished, and that<br />
silence was fall<strong>in</strong>g on those holy orisons whose<br />
melodies welcomed the morn and greeted the<br />
departure of the day; that all those rites and<br />
