formidable, they sent a messenger when near<br />
midnight to say that all members of Senate who<br />
were relatives of priests would be excluded from<br />
that body, and as to the rest of their demands, all<br />
th<strong>in</strong>gs touch<strong>in</strong>g religion and policy would be<br />
regulated accord<strong>in</strong>g to their wish.[13]<br />
The answer was so far satisfactory; but the<br />
citizens did not view it as a concession of their<br />
demands <strong>in</strong> full. Their enemies might yet spr<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
m<strong>in</strong>e upon them; till they had got someth<strong>in</strong>g more<br />
than a promise, they would not relax their vigilance<br />
or retire to their dwell<strong>in</strong>gs. Divid<strong>in</strong>g themselves<br />
<strong>in</strong>to three companies they occupied three different<br />

Hotel de Ville; they barricaded the streets by<br />

of the arsenal; they posted strong guards at the<br />

immense torches of fir-trees, they set them on high<br />
places to dispel with their flicker<strong>in</strong>g beams the<br />
