Tolkien in “Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.” The talented musicians of the Lincoln-Way Symphony Orchestra dedicated countless hours of practice and preparation to present a musical storytelling experience during its Sunday, March 3 concert entitled, “Lord of the Strings: Nationalism, Middle Earth and the Double Bass,” which was held at Lincoln- Way Central. As the title of the performance foreshadows, the group brought “The Lord of the Rings” to life by playing Howard Shore’s iconic score from the film “Return of the King” at the end of the program. Director Stacy Williams- Jackson explained that Shore enhanced Tolkien’s tale with music by placing calling cards of different “Lord of the Rings” characters throughout his composition. Storytelling was a theme of the Nationalism portion of the program, as well, which detailed European quests for independence in the late-1800s. “‘Finlandia,’ which was written by Jean Sibelius, kind of became Finland’s national anthem. It was composed in 1900, and by 1917 they were able to have their own independence from Russia,” Williams-Jackson said. “The themes of Russian oppression on the Finnish people are very apparent in the music. Photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media people who are just crying for their own identity.” “The Moldau,” a tone poem by Czech composer Bedrich Smetana, complemented “Finlandia’s” themes of freedom while offering elements of fantasy which tied-in with “Return of the King.” Williams-Jackson explained that the piece takes listeners on a journey through the Vltava River to a fairy pool with mermaids. “With a tone poem, you can really see what’s going on in the music,” she said. “You can visualize with the music.” Elsewhere in the program, senior double bassist Jenna Storiz — who earlier that day learned that along with Indiana University and Eastman School of Music, she was accepted into the music program at DePaul University — was a featured soloist on “Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra, Op. 3” by Serge Koussevitzky. “I love how lyrical it is,” Storiz said. “The bass gets to sing which you don’t really get to hear a lot because we’re in the back. It’s almost like a completely different instrument because it’s doing something completely different. People get to hear the capabilities of the instrument which aren’t usually presented.” Williams-Jackson said it typically takes students six months to practice for a season concert, but this year the wind, brass and percussion sections had to work double-time as marching band season was extended to prepare for the Tournament of Roses Parade. “We weren’t able to have winds, brass or percussion until after the holiday break, but they came in with their music ready to play,” she said. Junior trumpet player Libby Kaminski said dedicating time to individual practice was key to being ready for the concert. “I would listen to the songs so I could get a feel for how it sounds with the strings as well. I played along with the recording to get the feel of being in it,” Kaminski said. “When we were practicing as a group, I would take notes as to where the entrance is and if [Williams-Jackson’s] going to give a cue. From there, I could advance my practice at home.” Haley Cepek,who has played cello with the group for three years, said Lincoln-Way Symphony Orchestra members reliably rise to any challenge. “In the Symphony, it’s people who are really passionate about music and people want to go beyond the everyday of going to an orchestra and do more challenging music,” Cepek said. “It’s really nice to get together with everyone on Monday nights and put effort into it to try to make this music sound so pretty.” Williams-Jackson encouraged members of the community to come out New Lenox resident Haley Cepek plays cello with the Lincoln-Way Symphony Orchestra. It’s different,” she said. “It’s kind of the next level of what we should be doing with our musicians, giving them legitimate, real professional repertoire and giving them the opportunity to listen to, prepare and preform this amazing music. I think it’s a joy for our community, and it says something about our community that we can support the arts in this way and have this opportunity for our kids.” The Lincoln-Way Symphony Orchestra is comprised of students who attend West and Central.
