Coronation, Ab. – As March is Fraud<br />
Prevention Month, Coronation RCMP<br />
would like to remind the public to safeguard<br />
themselves against falling<br />
victim to fraudulent scams; particularly,<br />
those by phone or online contact<br />
which seem to be the most prevalent.<br />
The Coronation RCMP have<br />
received numerous complaints from<br />
residence throughout the County of<br />
Paintearth that have been contacted<br />
by fraudsters, or worse, have been victimized<br />
by them. In some reported<br />
cases, victims have lost several thousands<br />
of dollars.<br />
There are several scams that one<br />
may encounter over the phone or<br />
online whether it be through email,<br />
social media or contacts made by other<br />
means over the Internet. Below are<br />
just some common examples one may<br />
encounter and should take note of to<br />
safeguard oneself from victimization.<br />
Fraudsters will often call random<br />
numbers and fraudulently pose as<br />
large banking companies like Visa or<br />
MasterCard. The fraudster will notify<br />
the victim to advise that fraudulent<br />
transactions have been made on their<br />
credit cards. The fraudster will<br />
request assistance to an investigation<br />
about fraudulent activity and request<br />
the victim to buy iTunes or Google<br />
Play gift cards to cover various fees or<br />
costs in doing so.<br />
The request for the victim to purchase<br />
these types of gift cards is not<br />
exclusive to this scam and is often<br />
requested by persons with bad intentions.<br />
No legitimate company will ever<br />
ask you to purchase gift cards to pay<br />
for their services. This is always a<br />
scam.<br />
Another type of scam is the<br />
Romance Scam. This scam occurs<br />
when a victim meets someone online<br />
through social media, a dating app or<br />
website.<br />
The unbeknownst victim and<br />
scammer build a relationship and<br />
after a period of time—once the fraudster<br />
believes a relationship of trust has<br />
been established—the fraudster will<br />
ask the victim to send them money.<br />
The fraudster will often make it seem<br />
like they need financial assistance<br />
during difficult times or require funds<br />
to arrange a flight or bus fare to the<br />
victim’s location.<br />
The scammer does not have intentions<br />
to meet the victim and is<br />
typically not suffering financial hardship<br />
as described. This too is almost<br />
always a scam and particularly a risky<br />
move on the victim’s part, especially if<br />
they have never met in-person.<br />
The “Emergency Scam”, sometimes<br />
called the “Grandparent Scam”, is not<br />
new but still surfaces among fraudulent<br />
complaints received by the RCMP<br />
and other police agencies.<br />
Traditionally, fraudsters contact<br />
potential victims while posing as a<br />
family member or friend in urgent<br />
need of cash. Often the scenario<br />
involves an accident or arrest while<br />
travelling abroad, with a request that<br />
cash be sent through a money transfer<br />
company, such as Western Union or<br />
Money Gram.<br />
In the typical scenario, a grandparent<br />
receives a phone call from a<br />
con-artist pretending to be their<br />
grandchildren. The caller says that<br />
they are in trouble, usually a car accident,<br />
returning from a foreign<br />
country, or even in jail and need<br />
money immediately. If you receive a<br />
call that sounds similar to<br />
this, do not provide any personal<br />
information or send<br />
money. Instead, hang up the<br />
phone and contact your<br />
local police to report the<br />
scam.<br />
If you believe the complaint<br />
to be legitimate, it is<br />
recommended that you still<br />
contact your local police<br />
prior to acting on any<br />
requests made by the caller.<br />
The easiest way to avoid<br />
falling victim to these types<br />
of scams is to never provide<br />
your personal information<br />
such as account numbers,<br />
your social insurance<br />
number, usernames, passwords<br />
or other identifying<br />
personal information in<br />
response to unexpected<br />
calls or emails.<br />
Furthermore, it is advised<br />
to never send money over<br />
the phone to a stranger,<br />
through an email response<br />
or to new contacts made<br />
through a dating app or<br />
social media.<br />

like there is an emergency<br />
or that responding is time<br />
sensitive in effort to pressure<br />
victims to cooperate<br />

with their requests or<br />
demands. Do not send<br />
money or provide personal<br />
information under any circumstance,<br />
for any reason,<br />
to these types of requests.<br />
Especially those requests<br />
made over the phone, in the<br />
mail or online.<br />
Remember that a government<br />
organization or<br />
companies such as banks<br />
will never pressure you, for<br />
any reason, to provide personal<br />
information over the<br />
phone. If it sounds suspicious,<br />
it probably is.<br />

or have information to share<br />
with the RCMP. It is also<br />
recommended to contact the<br />
Canadian Anti-Fraud<br />

report any fraudulent<br />
encounters. If you wish to<br />
remain anonymous, you can<br />
contact Crime Stoppers at<br />
1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online<br />
at www.P3Tips.com or by<br />
using the “P3 Tips” app<br />
available through the Apple<br />
