There seems to be no stopping former Special
Assistant to the President Christopher Lawrence
“Kuya Bong” Go’s rise in the senatorial race as even
the opposition Magdalo Group’s survey showed his
huge jump in ranking.
Magdalo is chaired by opposition Sen. Antonio
Trillanes IV, an arch-critic of President Duterte and
Go himself.
Call for death
penalty renewed
By Alvin Murcia
The Volunteers Against Crime
and Corruption (VACC) yesterday
called on the public to support their
call for the re-imposition of the
death penalty in the aftermath of
the brutal murder and mutilation of
16-year old Christine Silawan after
possibly being raped in Lapu-Lapu
City, Cebu.
VACC founding Chairman
Dante Jimenez made the call as
he condemned the heinous crime
against Silawan, who was found
dead and defaced, naked from the
waist down. The victim’s head and
face was skinned off, exposing her
skull. She also bore multiple stab
wounds.
The perpetrators are now at
large and the subject of a manhunt.
Former Special Assistant to
the President and 2019 senatorial
candidate Christopher Lawrence
“Bong” Go condemned the brutal
slaying and supported calls for the
re-imposition of the death penalty
for heinous crimes.
“I believe it is a good deterrent
against these heinous crimes,” said
Go who called on authorities to do
everything in their power to bring
the perpetuators to justice.
The victim’s head and face
were skinned off, exposing
her skull. She also bore
multiple stab wounds.
Jimenez expressed his grief and
deep sentiment over the incident,
and aired his strong and urgent
appeal for legislation, especially
those running for re-election in
this year’s mid-term elections to
seriously consider the implications
of the incident in terms of law and
order and public safety.
“I hope that legislators,
especially during this election
season, will give particular
attention to the re-imposition of
the death penalty for heinous
crimes. The gruesome murder
of Christine Silawan presents
disturbing development in the
government ‘s campaign against
crime, corruption and illegal
drugs,” he said.
In a survey conducted by
Magdalo from 5 to 7 March and
released yesterday by the office of
Trillanes, Go was ranked at solo No.
6 with 41.1 percent vote preference.
In its previous survey, Magdalo ranked
Go at No. 16.
Independent reelectionist Senators Grace Poe
and Nacionalist Party Hugpong ng Pagbabago bet
reelectionist Sen. Cynthia Villar topped the Magdalo
polls with 60.6 percent and 49.2 percent, respectively.
Actor-turned-politician Lito Lapid was at No. 3 with
43.9 percent followed by Taguig Rep. Pia Cayetano
with 41.7 percent then former Sen. Bong Revilla at No.
Other candidates who made it to the top 16
were reelectionist Sen. Nancy
Binay, 34.7 percent (7); former
TRILLANES
THE hapless body of the defaced victim led to calls calls for the resurrection
of the death penalty.
Rody says
no to RICH
President Rodrigo Duterte is
not in favor of the law aimined at
establishing Regional Investment
and Infrastructure Coordinating
Hub (RICH) in Central Luzon.
The bill, proposed by Sen.
Richard Gordon, aims to bring in
jobs and capital to the region. Tax
exemptions will also be issued to
some registered enterprises for 50
years and possibly be extended
for a longer period of time.
In a veto letter to the Senate
dated March 13, Duterte said the
bill “has several provisions which
would pose substantial risks to
the country and are thus inimical
to its economic growth.”
The President insisted that
what the country’s needs is a tax
system that would not be heavy
for the people but could still raise
enough funds for government
programs.
“This renders the whole
system incapable of generating
a yield sufficient to sustain the
country’s social and economic
infrastructure, and this would
necessitate looking for new
sources of revenue through
additional taxes or borrowings
in the future,” Duterte said.
“In the end, it is the taxpayers
all over the country, who are
excluded from the tax incentives,
that will bear the brunt of the
burden,” he added.
