E D I T O R ’ S M E S S A G E
this issue, we talk PLASTIC SURGERY.
In Yep, I said it - plastic surgery. We go Behind
the Brand with one of the UAE’s leading plastic
surgeons to discuss “botox, bums and beauty
secrets.” We get the scoop on the most popular
procedures as well as the latest trends. I might
even throw in a secret or two (laugh) over there!
Another one of our core discussions this month
is around societal pressures on women 40+ and
childless. There are so many stigmas around my
sisters that we wanted to take the opportunity
to address this issue in the best possible way.
Please do give us your feedback on how well we
managed to do this.
I am beyond
chuffed at your response to
the first issue. Thank you,
thank, thank you. Thank you
for every personal message
of congratulations that was
sent, thank you for every click
on the site, thank for taking
the time to read the issue and
thank you for sharing. The
most resounding messages
I took from it all are the very
same reasons I decided to
create this magazine, hearing
“it sounds very real to me” and
“I can totally relate” makes me
feel like I am on the right path
here. Watch this space, it will
be getting even more real!
Our style feature this month is taking Punjabi
swag to a new level. In his words, he’s “not your
ordinary turban guy.”
Inside you’ll also find tips on male grooming,
or what we like to call “manscaping”, Makeup
Madness, male and female wardrobes musthaves,
dressing to suit your body shape, how to
turn your what-ifs into what-nows, plant-based
eating, fitness features including Yummy Mommy
and tips for sticking to your fitness goal, For the
Culture, Travel with Leela – our travel blogger
and guru and of course, everyone’s favourite, The
Cam - though some of you just won’t admit it -
I see you.
Again, we want our magazine to be entertaining,
informative and engaging, but above all, useful.
I hope you will enjoy this issue. We would love
to know if there are any topics you’d like to
see covered in the future. Please also send us
your feedback and remember to share on your
social media channels by using the hashtag
JASMIT SINGH

NOT YOUR
AVERAGE
TURBAN GUY
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF:
Name:
I am a Sikh, born and brought up in the Middle East. I earned a B.A. Accounting and
Finance degree from Heriot-Watt University (Dubai). I’m currently chasing my passion
as a turbaned fashion model. I’m also the founder of Fit Bhangra Abu Dhabi where
I train fitness dance routines. I also work in the events industry, often producing and
hosting advertising and branding events.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
1. In your cultural dress?
My personal style in my cultural form would be the most popular traditional
wear of Punjab which is Kurta and Pyjama. Kurta is a long shirt with slashes on
both sides along with long sleeves. Pyjamas are loose baggy pants tied with a
drawstring. I wear my turban in various colours to match my pocket square and
jutti. The traditional dress of my culture includes the traditional shoes called
jutti. It is a type of handcrafted footwear typically associated with Punjabis. The
juttis have no left-foot or right-foot distinction and take the shape of the feet
over a period of time.
2. Outside cultural dress?
My personal style is smart casuals AND street style. Also, I am very fond of
adding special elements to my outfits like lapel pins, matching pocket squares,
suspenders, etc.
WHICH TWO ACCESSORIES ARE YOUR MUST-HAVES?
I am very fascinated by fashion accessories, but the two
must-have accessories for me are:
1 The Kara (a bangle) which is a symbol of unbreakable
attachment and commitment to God
2 A watch
6

ARE YOU INTO LABELS? IF SO, WHAT IS
YOUR BRAND OF CHOICE?
Yes. I am into labels
but not loyal towards
any singular brand. I
particularly like:
Zara
Adidas Originals
Pull and Bear
Under Armor
Gucci
Bachelors
Hermes
Emporio
Armani
Under Armor
Calvin Klein
GROOMING SEEMS TO BE A BIG PART OF
YOUR ROUTINE. SHARE 3 IMPORTANT
STEPS IN THE GROOMING PROCESS
Well, there are more than 3 steps that I follow to
stay groomed, from staying fit by working out to
following hygienic methods.
Three important steps in my daily grooming
process would be:
1- Shower, spraying on deodorant followed by a
small amount of cologne
2- Tying my turban with perfection and making
sure it looks fresh and neat
3- Brushing and grooming my beard
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT FASHION IN
DUBAI?
Dubai has no doubt stepped up its fashion game
by having fashion-forward initiatives to promote
local talent in the region. The Arab Fashion Week
was developed to showcase international talent by
bringing designers from Europe and beyond. With
tourism numbers thriving, Dubai’s fashion industry
is in a growth period. And with its big ideas of
becoming a globally recognised fashion city,
there’s no reason why Dubai can’t crack that fashion
barrier and be listed with the likes of London, Paris
and New York as a key fashion city in the future.
IT IS NOT ALWAYS EASY TO “LOOK
DIFFERENT” IN TODAY’S SOCIETY. HOW
DO YOU INSPIRE SOMEONE WHO HAS NOT
REACHED YOUR LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE?
For most of my life growing up, the fear of what
other people thought of me, being raised in
a town where people like me (Sikh) were not
common, had kept me trapped. I feared going
out. At my lowest point, even walking down
the street became a struggle because my mind
would run wild with images of people talking
about and laughing at me as I went by.
I lived a half-life, being harassed, bullied and
teased for my appearance. I knew I was missing
out. I also knew I had so much more to contribute
to this world. But I was so conscious and trapped
in the fear that if I put myself out there, I’d be
ridiculed and rejected. I couldn’t bring myself to
perform, host, dance, meet new people, be out
there in public, fearing that people would point
towards me and laugh. Having two or more
people staring, judging me on the basis of my
appearance, scared me.
The fear of what other people think of us is
like a cage. Over time, you become so used
to being inside that cage you eventually come
to forget what the outside might be like. You
resign yourself to living within its walls. Freedom
from the fear of what others think is possible.
By stepping up your fashion, carrying your
outfit with your personality will boost up your
confidence in facing the world and will help you
overcome the fear of what others think of you.
You will slowly regain your freedom and escape
from the confines of the prison you’ve created
for yourself and live outside that cage.
“People will stare. Make it worth their while” is
the quote that always got me going. I have never
let my identity and my turban stop me from
being creative with my fashion sense. In fact,
wearing a turban always compliments my outfit.
Men with turbans can be just as fashionable as
anyone else. It’s pretty awesome! I did it and I
am sure you can too.
If you are one of those people who are going
through the same, believe in yourself, be out
there, be outspoken.
Y’all beautiful, y’all humans. You might look
7

different, dress differently but hey! It’s good to
be different. Overcome fear and face the world.
ACHIEVEMENTS ON A BIG SCALE
called “Sikh chic” and was featured in a hugely
successful exhibition of evocative photographs
by Amit and Naroop called the ‘The Singh
Project.’
Featured in SinghStreetStyle blog. In 2014, I got
the opportunity to be featured with Pradeep
Singh Bahra (known as The Turbaned Fashion
Blogger) and The Sikh Sartorialist (the one in
the middle). His work has been featured in
Vogue, GQ, Time Magazine, Times of India,
The Guardian, MTV and New York Daily. And
he recently became an instantly recognisable
face after appearing in a national advertising
campaign for Samsung called ‘Shadwell Chic.’
Pradeep became the first Singh to be the face
of a national campaign for a global firm and it
propelled the turban centre stage. Pardeep also
won the Sikh Awards for 2014 for highlighting
the fashion appeal of the Sikh style, catchily
A small piece of advice to people aiming to
enhance their creative skills would be – “Always
listen to your gut feeling and go about gathering
the right resources, be it in the form of contacts
or related information in pursuing your goal. If
you’re really interested in reaching your goals,
laziness and a laid back attitude are your biggest
enemies. Change the way you look at things and
the things you look at, change. It’s all about your
perspective. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE WAY YOU
SEE THINGS.”
DR. LEANDRO
Plastic Surgeon and CEO of Junqueira Medical Clinic,
talks bums, botox and beauty secrets
12

1 Tell me about yourself
I am Leandro Junqueira, a Brazilian plastic surgeon here in UAE. I am 46 years old and
married to an amazing Brazilian woman. Ten years ago, I came to Dubai with a happy
heart after closing 5 branches of my clinic in Brazil. I looked forward to making a life in
this beautiful country. After coming here, I worked in a couple of places until I got the
right opportunity to start my own business. The moment came along with the right set
of investors and the best team. Now we have established the Junqueira Medical Clinic
in a beautiful location in Dubai.
2 Plastic surgery is huge in this part of the world. Why do you think that is so?
I think that everything is connected to
globalisation because today everyone wants
to look great. I believe our life spans are now
longer. In most families, you will find at least
one elderly person. This was not the same
decades ago. This has opened opportunities
for people wanting to look great and having
good figures. Globalisation has also brought
about opportunities. Today, you could be a
stay at home parent and tomorrow, you are a
businesswoman or businessman. Therefore,
people want to look their best. Also, with the
weather in this part of the world and all the
beautiful beaches around, people want to look
fantastic when going to the pool and shores.
3 What are your specialities?
My professor in plastic surgery developed an
effective facelift technique - full facelift. We
open from one ear to the other and pull the face
upwards. However, today only a few people can afford this. No one has a month of
downtime. Most people don’t want a big change. The focus is mainly on small procedures
with big results. Today, it must be something short, quick and shouldn’t show much.
Due to my professor’s teachings, I have fallen in love with face and breast surgeries;
bums not so much. Note that I do all types of surgeries, but my passion lies in face and
breast operations.
4 What should we look for when choosing a good plastic surgeon?
The first thing a person should seek out before finalising a surgeon is an existing patient
of the doctor in question. Secondly, check if the doctor has a good reputation within the
community and the plastic surgery society. Ensure you know enough about them before
stepping foot into their clinic. That way, you are already aware of what to expect. Once
at the consultation, look for that chemistry between you and the doctor. That is vital!
Even if they are very talented, don’t go for them unless you feel that chemistry. It must
be someone you feel confident in, connected to and comfortable with.
13

5 Plastic surgery is still considered vanity.
What is your take on this?
I don’t see plastic surgery as vanity. I see it
as something that helps people with their
confidence. It is not like it was before, say
15 years ago, where some people were
crazy and over-the-top with plastic surgery
as a means of finding happiness. Today,
people are not equating confidence with
plastic surgery. Of course, there are still
a few extremes, but it’s a minority. Mind
you, I am quite a conservative doctor. I
don’t stimulate. If I see that the patient is
unsure, I am not going to convince them,
because it may not be the right moment
for them to have the surgery. I am not a
salesperson. I am not here to sell products
and procedures. I am here to prepare the
patient for the changes in his or life after
the surgery. It is for the patient to be ready
for that change.
6 How honest are you with your patients?
You know, when I moved to the UAE, my
intent has always been to make life here
- to build a great name, reputation and
brand. I would never pursue someone in
doubt because that is a lot of responsibility.
Sometimes, the patient has other things
they need to deal with before surgery. I
see beauty in every situation and in every
person. I see God’s beauty in every person,
therefore would never push a patient to
get a procedure done for financial gain.
7 Some people go overboard at times
with plastic surgery. When is it time to
stop? How do you break that to your
patients?
The best thing is to explain to the person
that everyone has limits and that beauty
is not in the amount of stretch. Beauty
is a combination. Everyone has limits.
Our bodies have limits. We must respect
our bodies. If I see I will not be able to
offer a good result based on the patients
expectations, I will definitely opt out of
carrying out the procedure. Overdoing is
not my thing.
8 What are the most popular treatments
in this part of the world?
• Aesthetics - The number one
requested aesthetic treatment
is botox. Following that is fillers.
Today, the techniques are more
advanced, quality of the products
much better, therefore, the results
are great too.
• Surgery – For plastic surgery, the
number one requested operation
is breast augmentation; secondly
liposuction, then breast lift,
abdominoplasty, facelift and nose
jobs. That is usually the sequence.
9 Are men getting as many treatments
or surgeries as women? What is the
proportion? What do men tend to have
done?
Today, the number of male patients that
visit the clinic is about 15-20% of our
total clients. Men have started to realise
they need to do something to reduce the
speed of aging and to take care of their
existing age marks. However, men are
not like women. Women are usually less
bothered about scars and the downtime
required to heal. But with men, it’s not that
simple. They care a lot more about these
things. Recently, men have started taking
care of their hair and doing gentle botox,
a little filler and sometimes, liposuction or
even a nose job at times. Men have begun
taking towards plastic surgery, but at a
slower pace than women.
10 What is your definition of beauty?
I see beauty in everything. I think beauty
is looking at something and not feeling
bored, seeing the wow factor in that thing.
It could be in a face, shape or even in a hand.
14

I think beauty is connected to simplicity.
Being humble and simple is so important.
If the person is physically beautiful, but not
humble, what is the point? If you can’t talk
to this person, what’s the point? Beauty
is connected to a person’s personality,
character and attitudes. Beauty is like a
flower - you want to look at it, not touch
it. However, sometimes the flower needs
to be positioned to get sunlight and be
watered.
11 What advice would you give to someone
who is thinking about getting surgery?
After you are sure about the doctor, the
patient must think very carefully about
why they want this surgery. Is this for
the pleasure of someone else or for
themselves? If the patient is not in a
good mental space, it is not time for a
procedure. Because sometimes, changing
the face or body is not what’s needed. If
the patient is not stable mentally, how will
the person deal with the changes after
surgery? The patient must know why they
want to have surgery. They should consult
with family and friends before reaching a
final decision.
12 What is your general message about
beauty, health and well-being?
I believe it is very important for a person
to take care in all aspects of life. Beauty
reflects what’s inside, who you are and
how you live. You can look great if you
look after your face. But facial beauty will
not last very long. The lasting beauty is in
taking care of your spiritual, physical and
mental sides. If you can connect these,
then that’s beauty. But of course, plastic
surgery can help in two of these areas,
the physical and mental. But spirituality is
something only the patient can look after.
The real beauty comes from an equilibrium
between these three pillars.
So my general message is to eat good
food, have adequate water, make time
for yourself, enjoy being with loved ones,
have time for your faith and of course, time
with us (laugh).
TALKS “MANSCAPING” - LANDSCAPING FOR MEN (MALE GROOMING)
millshukree
Millard Q. Shukree
far back as I can remember,
As “manscaping” was and is one
of the most sacred traditions. When
you pull up to a humble home, the first
thing you usually notice is the front
lawn. As a man arrives on any scene,
one of the things that stand out is his
hairstyle - his facial bush or lack thereof.
Whether clean cut, shaven to precision
or lengthy locs with heavy shrubs on
his face, it is a must to customise his
look!
Before a manscaping session with your
tonsorial artist, share what you want
about your look as a client. At the same
time, get his opinion. This process
ensures that the end result will add
to your swag. There is nothing more
rewarding for than to hear “Thanks for
putting me back in the game!” Or the
thank-you texts from satisfied wives
that read “Wow! You got my hubby
lookin’ right!”
See the detailed edge lines... The
fades with smooth transitions and the
tapered napes are an extension of a
man’s confidence. Suited or casual, an
amazing mane can boost his bravado
while putting his pride for being
attractive on display. A manscaper’s
intention is to relay good vibrations
through the skill of barbering. It’s as if
I want to carve away negative energy,
leaving highlights of plush growth.
As an artist, I make sure I am familiar
with the latest trends. I also take
pride in classic ministrations. There is
nothing like a hot towel treatment with
a straight razor shave. I am cut from
the fabric of a fraternity of manscapers
abroad. It is my ultimate pleasure to
change the face of men worldwide!
17

HERE ARE MY TIPS
to help you keep your face and skin in
tip-top shape:
• FOR STRAIGHT HAIR:

Use a styling gel with firm hold or pomade for
textured cuts. Hair talc is great for height and
volume.
Shampoo and condition at least every other
day with an oat protein base (adds volume and
removes build up).
• FOR CURLY TO EXTRA CURLY HAIR:

Clean shaven men should use an aloe vera
based facial scrub daily. Along with a normal
to dry skin moisturiser to prevent irritation
between shaves.
DO NOT use a straight razor if you have bumps
in the desired area to be shaved. Use an electric
trimmer only. Some men have skin that is too
sensitive for blades.
Bearded men should always comb the beard
daily and use a moderate amount of beard oil
for healthy strands and fragrance.

Use coconut, almond or black seed oil every other
day to prevent dry scalp and to enhance sheen.
Shampoo and condition at least four times
weekly. Use products with a tea tree oil base to
reduce oil build up.
Clean shaven clients should use a normal to dry
skin astringent daily to prevent ingrown facial
hair. Exfoliate the skin at least three times a
week to reduce irritation. Moisturise according
to the skin type.

DO NOT use straight blades if razor bumps
appear in patches. Your skin is too sensitive!
Electric trimmer only!

Bearded men with curly hair should also comb
daily. Shea butter oil is an excellent type of beard
oil for this type of hair. It gives an awesome
sheen and prevents matting and patching.
For a classic men’s wardrobe, suits are simply valuable.
Why? It’s a versatile item that never goes out of style!
Your suit jacket can step up a casual shirt and pants
pairing and further add a dash of sophistication to the
entire ensemble. As one of the most important garments
for men’s styling, start by choosing monochrome
colours. Opt for a pit black, a navy blue, or textured
grey shade that can smoothly transition between seasons.
You can wear these neutral shades anywhere,
anytime. Plus, one-tone suits allow you to incorporate
other colours into your outfit. Still, whichever your colour
choice, suits assure you of a more tailored appeal.
P O L O S H I R T S
Invest in some basic white or classic black polo shirts
that you can wear at the beach, at the office or to any
sporty event. Polo shirts never go out of fashion and
they can be polished with seasonal accessories like
Panama hats and trainers. Or you can also pair them up
with other classical garments like white chinos or formal
trousers. Certainly, these style staples deserve a little
more space in your wardrobe.
J E A N S
Dressing down does not mean it’s any less fashionable.
It’s just equal comfort and equal style. And if you’re
looking for the best item for everyday wear, then a pair
of jeans is the best bet. When choosing the right set
of jeans, make sure to account for the size, cut, and
colour. You’ll never go wrong with neutral shades like
grey, black or navy. These colours are easy to match
with almost every kind of top garment like a statement
tee, a coloured button-down or a simple polo shirt.
Ties could be man’s low-key best friend. These small
yet stylish accessories bring out that essential sense of
style, confidence and sophistication in your entire look.
With an array of colours and patterns, choosing the
right tie for your outfit can be a challenge. Hence, opt
for neutral shades that can match with most outfits. And
if you want a dash of pop, you can stock a couple of
vibrant hues for a more fun and stylish getup.
There’s more to sporting a watch than it being an expression
of personal fashion sense. It’s a lucrative investment
that’s worth the splurge a timeless piece you
can wear every day for years to come. And even if you
wear just a basic t-shirt and pants, finishing off the
outfit with a stylish watch can definitely upgrade your
look. That is why men always consider this accessory as
a must-have item. Just strap on this classic piece and
you’re good to go.
Complete your collection of essentials with a pair of
polished leather shoes. Remember, shoes do speak the
most about your personality. Leather shoes, in particular,
are perfect for all occasions whether it’s a casual
dinner date or a formal business meeting. This staple
item gives you that classic polished look!
BUTTON-DOWN
Gracing the list for women is the classic white button-down.
This versatile outfit is both comfy and modish,
hence on the top list of your wardrobe essentials.
The styling options for a white-button-down are endless!
Pair this with your favourite wide-leg jeans and
buckled boots for a snappy appeal. Or unleash your
sassiness with a basic button-down, a patterned skirt
and pump heels. Truly, this white canvas is such a prized
piece that it deserves a spot or two in your closet.
But of course, your wardrobe wouldn’t be complete
without your go-to LBD. This simple yet highly sophisticated
cocktail dress can complement any style from
rock to formal. For a sexy, edgy ensemble, team it up
with a leather jacket and trainers. And for a charming
appeal, simply throw on a pair of stilettos and some
striking accessories. A bright, patterned blazer is also
an easy way to accessorise your little black dress.
H E E L S
Another key piece you should add into your wardrobe
is a pair of heels. From block to wedge to standard high
heels, this rather popular footwear style remains to be a
cherished possession among women. Heels are not just
used to accentuate your height but also to bring out
your style. Plus, they give you lots of styling options.
Match your floral dress with your favourite high-heeled
sandals or add a sophisticated twist to your shirt-andtrousers
duo with a pair of stiletto heels. Clearly, there
are no strict rules when it comes to heels.
Let’s face it wearing heels all day isn’t an easy deal…..
unless you are me :-. It’s challenging and extremely tiring!
Hence, a pair of flats is a practical alternative if you
still want to look and feel good. Walk in style and comfort
or sophisticated loafers. Without a doubt, flats are the
DRESSING TO SUIT YOUR
B O D Y S H A P E
Dressing up is fun and exciting–simply because the
options are endless! You have the luxury to choose
anything to wear, be it your favourite LBD or your
go-to sweatshirt. But sometimes, what feels good
does not always look good on your frame.
That is why you need to embrace your body
first. Trends come and go, but it’s your body
that stays. So find the best style that flatters your
body that makes you feel and look good at the
same time. Here’s how to dress according to your
body shape:
26

DRESSING TO SUIT YOUR
B O D Y S H A P E
A P P L E
(TRIANGLE DOWNWARD)
Probably the most popular yet challenging
body type. Apple-shaped women often
feature a body with a bit of a belly–hence
the name ‘apple’. Plus, this shape comes with
broader shoulders and bust, and narrower hips
and legs.
With no defined waist, you tend to conceal
the excess weight on your stomach with
loose garments. But there are plenty of ways
to dress up if you have a triangle downward
shape! Accentuate your assets, which are your
cleavage and slender legs. Play with colours
and layers to create an appealing illusion of a
leaner midsection.
Make the most out of your neckline because
you have a broader bust. Opt for clothes that
draw emphasis to your bust section like flares,
off-the-shoulders, tunic tops and V-necks. You
can also tuck in tops to bring out some style.
And don’t forget to pick a well-fitting bra to
create a nice silhouette. Take advantage of
tailored jackets to spell out your personal
fashion sense, as well as hide the unwanted
weight on your mid-area.
Pair your shirts with short skirts or bodyhugging
shorts to emphasise your legs. Skinny
jeans and flared pants are a great match too.
High-rise styles with a nice stretch can also
work wonders. And to draw the attention away
from your tummy, spark some dimensions to
the bottom section of your body. Let prints
and patterns do the talking. If you love wearing
skirts, you can take maximum advantage of
these elements.
Dresses that do not cling too much on your
body are another best option. Cocktail dresses
with loose bottom fittings give you the comfort
and style most suitable for your body.
27

DRESSING TO SUIT YOUR
B O D Y S H A P E
BANANA OR STRAIGHT
(RECTANGULAR)
Banana-shaped women have a wellbalanced
proportion, from the shoulders
down to the hips. Sometimes, their waist
measurement is less than 9 inches than the
bust and hip dimension. Even if they are
not principally curvy, they have one of the
easiest body shapes to style. They can create
a beautiful silhouette if they maximise styling
options to fit their rectangular shape. For those
with straight body type, your legs and arms are
your assets. Technically, banana is similar to an
hourglass form, less the well-defined waist and
smaller hips.
Lean towards solid colours, but occasionally
strike some drama with the help of tailored
blazers or long jackets. If you have a longer
neck and smaller bust, work on high necklines
to add definition to your upper body.
Sleeveless, halters, strapless and ruffles are
styles that complement this body type. Plunge
dresses are great too!
Note that you have to define your lower body
well, so pay attention to picking the right pair
of bottoms. Choose slightly flared pants or
A-line skirts that add dimension to your legs.
Skinny jeans are also nice but make sure that
these perfectly fit your booty area to create
that needed balance.
28

DRESSING TO SUIT YOUR
B O D Y S H A P E
PEAR, SPOON OR BELL
(TRIANGLE UPWARD )
Pear-shaped bodies have smaller bust
dimensions and bigger hip measurements.
With this body type, the focus is on your
lower part. So that’s where you accentuate
your appeal. Your fuller hips can help create
a beautiful illusion of well-balanced shape.
Accentuate your curvy waist by wearing
clothes that enhance its shape. Flaunt your
wide hips and full booty like a pro!
Fitted tops are perfect for this body shape.
So are crop tops, boat and V-necks. Buttondown
shirts can also complement this body
type because they provide a striking balance
to your body outline. And because you have
a smaller bust, opt for tops that add a dash
of style and sophistication to your upper and
mid-section like those embellished necklines
and flares. Throw some features to your
shoulders with a cardigan or blazer. Utilise
layering to maintain that balance and nice
silhouette. Ruffles and patterned tops do
well to provide you with a more defined and
stylish aura.
For your bottom, high-rise pants and A-line
skirts match your upper body. But since you
have a narrower waist and wider hips, you
can take advantage of skinny jeans and pencil
skirts. These bottoms highlight your natural
shape.
29

DRESSING TO SUIT YOUR
B O D Y S H A P E
HOURGLASS
SHAPE
(TRIANGLES OPPOSING,
FACING IN)
Hourglass body shape is often the most
coveted body type because it features
equal measurement of the bust and hip. The
properly-balanced body dimensions allow you
to throw in different styles. With a chiseled
body and a narrow waist, trail your curvy
outline and don’t be afraid to flaunt your very
feminine shape to the fullest. And if you want
to achieve this body, exercise is the key!
Add some drama to your well-balanced figure
by picking clothes that fit your curves well.
Because you have a fuller bust, plunge tops
and high neckline dresses look good on you.
Peplum blouses and wrap tops as well as
body-con dresses and fitted jumpsuits, help
you emphasise your curves. And since you
have thicker hips, you can wear almost any
kind of bottom, ranging from high-waist pants
to straight-cut trousers to pencil skirts. And to
draw more attention to your figure, you can
add a belt to the getup.
In a nutshell, knowing and loving your body
type is the first step to appreciate the trends
and love fashion. Remember, style becomes
useless without the proper fit. So, accept your
body shape and don’t aim to be like others. Be
your own kind of beautiful. From there, you’ll
see that fashion is truly an art a fascinating way
to express your style and be comfortable in
your own body.
ON WOMEN AGED 40+ AND CHILDLESS
IN TODAY’S SOCIETY,
WOMEN WHO ARE
40+ AND CHILDLESS
ARE OFTEN LOOKED
DOWN ON. THE
STIGMAS ASSOCIATED
WITH THE LACK OF
CHILDREN ARE MANY.
37

I recently heard a friend say, “People tell me ‘You are
not Janet Jackson nor Halle Berry.’ Hearing this made
me numb and as if my chances were really short and I
should’ve started years ago.”
As if there isn’t enough pressure questioning or
suggesting about:
• Getting into a relationship
• Adoption
• The purpose of womanhood being to reproduce
• Having a fertility check
And so on ...
A woman’s world is not transparent for the outside
society to see and sympathise. And when others view
you through their expectations, it does a lot to shatter
the confidence we have inside.
In this article, let’s explore the realities of societal
pressure and life choices.
• A few may have experienced trauma and are
struggling with its outcomes.
IF WE WERE IN YOUR SHOES ...

Whenever we encounter women in this situation,
take a minute to pause and reflect on how you
would feel if you were in her shoes. Following are a
few questions that you should never ask a childless
women over the age of 40:
1. “Do you like children?”
It sounds like a question from a first date or a
dating app chat mate. Of course, they do like
children! They simply have a personal circumstance
why they don’t have one of their own. And what
if they replied ‘no’? Should they be ridiculed
or humiliated? Don’t they have a choice in this
matter? Just like the rest of us, they do. And it
is time society owns up to respecting people for
their choices.
THE ‘WHY’ - REASONS FOR BEING CHILDLESS
AT THE AGE OF 40:
2. “Has fostering or adopting a child ever crossed
your mind?”
• Some women don’t have partners.
• Some cannot be pregnant due to medical
conditions.
• Many do not want to be pregnant without
getting married.
• Some do not want to have children, period.
Adopting a child is always an option. However,
have you thought that this question can offend
someone who wants to have a biological child?
The difference is just a few words for you, but
could be a drop in honour for the woman.
38

3. “Why are you childless at this age?”
“‘You’re still young’ - they say I always feel confused by
all of this because I don’t know what I am anymore. Am
I still young or am I too old??”
The words of KC, aged 40
4. “Is there something wrong with you?”
Nobody would ever like to answer that question!
Would you?
If you are struggling with the issues of having a child
at the right time, this piece of guidance can open your
mind:
“Being childless in your 40’s is not a punishment nor
depiction of your woman. It just means that my Creator
is orchestrating the perfect moment for my family to
begin. During this time, I’m encouraged to put the love
I have stored up into practice to those that cross my
path.”
The words of KR, aged 41
5. “Are you struggling with fertility?”
This is none of anyone’s concern or business. Childless
women might also be in pain and have a reason for not
having a child – perhaps personal or medical.
THE CELEBRATION OF LIFE
PEARLS OF WISDOM FOR THE CHILDLESS WOMAN
So what if you’re 40 and childless? Your life is a
celebration! There is no reason not to enjoy the
years! Not being a mother over 40 doesn’t determine
happiness nor does it define you.
You’re significant alone. You’re a woman of value.
All those thoughts and assumptions are absolutely
wrong! So instead of filling your days desperately
seeking validation that it’s okay to be childless over 40
or weeping over your status, why don’t you consider
the unlimited opportunities and advantages awaiting
women like you?
After all, growth and self-indulgence can be at your
fingertips - anytime you want it! You can do anything
your heart desires, travel where you want to go, invest
in ventures you are passionate about and grow in the
manner you want to.
Are you convinced yet? Here are more reasons to
celebrate being childless over 40:
1) Real self-discovery
39

Childless women can easily afford chances to find
out the good, the bad, the unique and the weird
(and so on) about themselves. They can uncover all
those things, laid bare, before their eyes and get
to know their strengths and weaknesses.
Being childless is about discovering the person
and reasons you are that person. And you have all
the opportunities and time in the world to iron out
any creases.

Who knows? This new person who is super sure of
herself and her abilities might have a chance at a
new relationship. Getting to know who you are can
really help before you enter a new relationship.
2) Unseen opportunities
“I am 44, married with no children by choice. I adore
other people’s children (including my now two adult
stepsons) and have many god-children, but I never
thought of having my own. I love my work, I finally got
to have my own business when I was 41 and it is takes
almost all of my time. I love the fact that I have freedom
(at least in theory) about decisions in my life and that I
am almost only responsible for myself (and four cats).
(Husband does not count as responsibility). Sometimes
it has crossed my mind will I regret this decision when I
am old, but I don’t think that is a good reason to change
a life I enjoy as it is! I have also seen many friends have
children with the wrong men and their life not really
turning better afterwards. And if someone asks me
what is the best thing I have done for our planet, I can
cheekily answer that I have decided not to populate it
with more people!”
- Katia, aged 44
Have you thought of the sacrifices a mother has
to make? Her mind is constantly overrun with
worries about running a family, taking care of all
its members, the finances, juggling jobs and a
home life and throwing in drama from extended
relatives. There is a lot of stressors that she has and
you don’t.
This could be a blessing in disguise. You can use
your energy positively by volunteering in the
community, or if you enjoy being around children,
can try tutoring or babysitting them.
3) Growing in confidence and learning to love
yourself

Being childless over 40, you can further develop
the talents and skills which you might not have
given much attention to before. Plus, you can learn
new ways of doing things and adapting to any
change. Share your skills and make new friends.
Growing old alone can raise doubts about dependency
and health struggles. But remember, there are many
in the world who have chosen this same path. Talk to
them, find networks that host childless women, talk
to employers who are pro-women and communities
that support the growth of individuality.
Childlessness is a chance to love yourself more. In time,
you realise that you have so much power in you that all
you need to rely on is ultimately “you.”
Also, you cannot purely love anyone who would enter
your life if you were shaken by regret and lack of selfconfidence.
You have to live by and love yourself first,
no matter what your future decisions may be.
Besides, having a child does not guarantee happiness
because happiness is a choice. It’s in your hands, not in
someone else’s pocket. Never underestimate your value
as a woman just because you’re childless.
FINAL THOUGHTS
It is a shame that society views mothering a child to be
the best part of a woman’s life. But you cannot change
the world - all you can change is yourself and how you
view it.
So instead of weeping, feeling discontent and taking
the societal pressures on for being childless at 40+,
embrace your life! Use your time to grow and develop
and not be caged by the expectations of others.
Remember that every woman is unique and so are you
and your situation.
The golden words to engrave in your mind are –
you have you and that’s all you will ever need.
H O W T O
C H A N G E
YOUR WHAT-IFS TO WHAT-NOWS
Those who constantly worry simply cannot have peace
of mind. They sweat even on the small stuff and always
anticipate things going wrong.
Worry is extremely common, and even those living happily
and well may worry excessively on a given occasion.
However, one in four people suffer from anxiety disorders
at certain points in their lives.
And if you have anxiety, everything you want to do
is followed by the two words – ‘What if’ …
• What if I get on stage, deliver my speech and
somewhere along the way, I suffer from mental block
forgetting everything I memorised?
• What if I travel and get lost?
• What if I go on this date and make a bad first
impression?
• What if I start a business and lose all my money?
• What if I accept this offer but later receive a better
one with a higher salary?
The mere two-word question is so powerful. No
wonder it racks your mind.
Your mind is so brilliant and imaginative that it can
concoct a series of terrible scenarios that can go
beyond what’s possible - from embarrassment to
death.
Those two words can stop you from travelling the
world, saying yes to a suitor or getting married.
It can also hinder you from being open with your
feelings, nodding to attend special events, joining
contests and simply enjoying the life that you’re
supposed to be living, had you not been too worried
or anxious about unfavourable outcomes.
So in short, ‘what if’ is almost always linked with fear
and worry, indicating that things will always go wrong.
How Do You Defeat Those ‘What-ifs’ In Your Life?
It is perfectly normal to analyse each situation before
making a decision or taking the next step.
After all, we’re intellectual humans who have adapted
to this system.
This being said, humans have also acquired one trait
along with development - and that is FEAR.
There are so many things people fear – losing
reputation, being unaccepted in society, being judged
by other people, feeling the inability to survive and
fearing dying due to unknown causes.
41

But are your fears justifiable? Do you think the
cause of your anxiety or fear is justified? Or are
those worries just products of over-thinking?
Turn those negative what-ifs into positive what-ifs
If you cannot help but ask yourself certain what-ifs,
try to convert them to positive questions.
• What if I get on stage, deliver my speech well and
inspire so many people?
• What if I travel and learn a new culture?
• What if I go on a date and be asked for the next one?
programmed for that. Your body will also cooperate so
that you can get there.
• What if I get rich…?
• What if I succeed…?
• What if I reach my goal…?
Think of those possibilities. Form them in your mind. Let
the what ifs help you visualise and achieve your dreams. In
short, try to visualise the best case (not the worst) for every
situation.
Of course, sometimes, things can go south. But that’s
just a probability, not the 100% possibility.
Bring it on and say “So what!”
• What if I start a business and it does exceptionally
well?
• What if I accept this offer, improve my skills and
later be promoted?
The next time a negative ‘what-ifs’ comes to mind, you
can also use another technique – and that is to use the
brave phrase – “so what!”
“So what if that bad scenario really showed up?”
So when negative what-ifs enter your mind, try
to reverse them and think of positive outcomes
instead of the other way around.
Your brain is so brilliant that it can create just the most
horrible picture. When it does, you can also stand up,
face it with your chin up and say “so what?”
After all, using these what-ifs to think positive might
even serve as a great motivator to reach your goals and
become successful, as they can help you visualise the
great things you want coming your way.
It is like conditioning and feeding your mind with what
you want to achieve – and eventually, your brain will be
And then, think of a solution even if the problem
has not surfaced yet.
After all, this proactive attitude of making a contingency
plan beforehand can help you face the situation because
you are prepared with a conditioned mind. And you’re
NOT AFRAID.
42

L I F E S T Y L E
Recognise that everything will be okay, even if
something goes wrong.
Know that things might not be favourable, but you will
get through it. Whether or not you fail the job interview
(which you probably won’t), you need to tell yourself that
things will turn out okay and that you will do better next
time.
Answer and believe in yourself.
Face your life’s what-ifs to prevent them from
haunting your thoughts.
Instead of allowing them to haunt you because
you’re scared, learn how to answer them and face
the truth.
Be brave enough to answer your doubts and
courageous enough to face the reality.
If you do master it, no problem will ever bother
you again because you’re not scared and are ever
ready to come up with a solution.
Have faith in yourself – so that doubts and
insecurities won’t pull you down.
Keep your focus and eye on the prize you want to
achieve.
Walk with self-belief and confidence.
As at the end of the day, you are your worst enemy.
Don’t let self-doubt stop you from achieving greatness just
because you’re always anxious about things going wrong.
Final Thoughts
It’s normal to feel anxious. But too much anxiety is
no good for you. These “what-ifs” can stop you from
enjoying life, achieving your dreams and living a happy
life. Learn how to take risks, believe in yourself and use
those what ifs to visualise what you want to gain - not
what you are to lose.
Follow these tips and learn how to convert the
“what-ifs” to “what-now” today!
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
Throughout my life, I have followed a healthy, active
lifestyle, keeping fit and eating a varied and balanced
diet. I do not follow any restrictive diets and throughout
my pregnancy, I continued to eat a well balanced diet,
as opposed to eating a high calorie diet for two. I was
driving around 84 kms to and from work everyday,
working 50+ hours a week, until the day I delivered. I
was at the top of my fitness while I was pregnant and had
the most amazing, beautiful and blessed nine months.
one of the healthiest kid she had delivered in recent
times.
When Micah was around 6 and a half months old, I left
my job because I felt I needed to bond with him and
watch him grow. I decided to focus my energy on my
son as I wanted him to grow up happy and healthy.
Nowadays, I am busy travelling and exploring new
cities and cultures with Micah. We have been to three
continents, six countries, and have explored nine cities
in the past twelve months and I am loving every bit of
time I am spending with my 15-month-old son.
During pregnancy, I gained 13.5 kilos and faced no
complications during delivery. Micah, my son, was born
in the 40th week and weighed around 3.63 kilos. I was
a proud parent, when the doctor remarked that he was
On the other hand, losing the pregnancy weight and the
flab has been a slow but consistent process. Today, after
15 months, I am back to my pre-pregnancy weight and
feel amazingly fit and blessed as always.
1. Have you always been fit?
What inspired you to live a fit lifestyle?

I have been into fitness since the age of 6 or 7. As I grew
older, I never gave up on fitness and have always been
fit and have considered myself to be very healthy. I love
myself and I respect my body. The Bible says that our
bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit, who resides in
you, and we are called to honour and take care of His
temple. So, if my body is a place where God dwells, then
it is my responsibility to maintain it, look after it, nourish
it, and keep it “clean” inside out. Taking care of my body
is also my way of showing gratitude to the whole cosmos.
2. Describe what you’re doing to stay in
shape. How often and how long do you
workout?
With a 15-month old toddler, no househelp and being
constantly on the move, I don’t get as much time to
exercise like I use to in the past. At the moment, I
go for a walk with my son (with him in the stroller of
course), or go for a swim with him. I do few reps of
lunges, squats and planks at home along with a couple
of stretches. I also attend group exercise classes as
much as I can. My daily goal is to do 10,000 steps a
day. I can’t wait for my son to get a little older so that
we can do bike riding, rock climbing, hiking, kayaking
and more. together. There are numerous different
ways to train your body. You just have to enjoy it.
45

3. What is your diet like?
Real food. Basically, my diet varies depending on where
in the world I am. I try to eat local as much possible.
But I don’t compromise on certain things like; I do not
consume labelled food, especially if I can’t pronounce
what is written. Processed foods are another no-no. I
consume minimum dairy and dairy products. I have
substituted milk with unsweetened almond milk. I prefer
low GI foods and opt for free range or organic produce
whenever possible.
When at home, I start my day with warm lemon-gingertumeric
water as I think it’s detoxifying. I shop and cook
all my meals thrice a day, i.e., breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I try to incorporate at least seven colours throughout the
day in my meals. I haven’t consumed red meat for as
long as I remember as I am more inclined towards lean
protein such as free range chicken or eggs. I get my
omegas through wild caught fish - preferably salmon or
tuna. With every meal, I have either freshly squeezed
juice, green juice or homemade smoothie. Occasionally,
I treat myself with dark chocolate and sencha tea.
Oh yes and I never eat my meal alone. We try to have
our meals together as a family whenever possible. The
motive is to spend time with your loved ones, respect
food and food sources, be grateful, relax, enjoy every
meal and feel satisfied, not stuffed.
4. How do you stay motivated?
I enjoy group exercises as they are so much fun! And
more so, they are great motivators because you meet
people with similar lifestyle goals and needs. There is
nothing better than a great group workout class like
aerobics, pilates, abs, dance or body pump. I enjoy
good music and challenging, sweaty workouts. The
bonus is you get to stay fit.
5. Do you have any mental tricks that you
use when you just don’t feel like working
out?
Balance diet and exercise have become a way of life.
A good workout followed by a healthy, nutritious meal
makes me feel positive and happy about life in general.
And most importantly, I do what I enjoy and do it
alongside people whose company I enjoy. So it’s a winwin
situation for me.
6. What advice do you have for moms who
say they don’t have time for exercise?
There is no such thing as no time for your own wellbeing.
Workout at home if you don’t like to hit the gym
or go out for a walk or jog. Download fitness apps, which
will remind you periodically to exercise. Plus, they come
with a whole range of workout sessions which you can
play on demand. And most importantly, get your kids
involved and be a role model to your family. When your
children will see you exercising, they will also realise
the importance of keeping fit. It will be an essential life
lesson for them. They will learn to look after themselves,
respect and listen to their bodies.
I started working out when Micah was 41 days old. I
use to carry him in my arms and do squats and lunges.
He use to lie down besides me when I use to do my
stretches. It was so much fun!
46

7. Things you’ve tried and hated — diets and working out?
Hmmm… I am not sure. I have only done things that appeal to me to begin with.
8. What are your top tips to help women get into shape?
As much as possible, try to get enough sleep. A balanced diet, exercise and getting as much
sleep as possible are important in weight management. Overcome postpartum depression. Take
professional help if necessary. Well-balanced diet, sleep and exercise helps to improve your mood
which fights depression.
Try to find any way to be active starting with 10,000 steps a day - walking, jogging, swimming, cycling,
house chores, cooking, jumping, running behind your toddler - anything that you enjoy. If you don’t
enjoy, you are going to give it up sooner rather than later. Remember to aim for 10,000 steps a day.
IS A PLANT-BASED DIET
THE WAY TO A
HEALTHIER LIFE?
Is a diet with minimally processed
foods and more of plant-based
ingredients the key to a healthier and
longer life?
A plant-based eating pattern focuses
on consuming unrefined, minimally
processed whole foods in their
original and unadulterated form.
Staples include legumes, tubers,
vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts and
whole grains. These are loaded
with phytochemicals, antioxidants,
vitamins and minerals and can supply
the body with all the nutrients for
healthy functioning.
WHY A PLANT-BASED DIET
MAY BE GOOD FOR YOU
Plant-based diets offer plenty of
benefits for the body. One of its
significant advantages is weight
management. As foods included
on this diet are loaded with fibre
and contain lots of water, they can
promote a feeling of fullness and
lessen food cravings.
In addition, plant-based foods are
packed with vitamins, minerals,
healthy fats and phytochemicals
which can promote healthy skin with
more radiance.
Plant-based foods have other skin
benefits as they are loaded with
antioxidants, including vitamin
C. A few sources of this essential
vitamin are apricot and papaya, two
fruits that assist in repairing and
stimulating collagen production to
reduce wrinkles and fine lines.
A plant-based diet also improves
blood glucose levels especially
among pre-diabetics and diabetics. It
can also lessen one’s risk of diabetesrelated
complications.
It aids in digestion because it is full
of fibre and can prevent constipation.
Whole foods can also promote
regular bowel movement and lower
blood pressure.
Getting Started With A Plant-Based Diet
Before anything else, consult your doctor especially if you
have a medical condition. He or she can give you sound
advice on whether a plant-diet is right for you or not. If
given the go-ahead signal by the doctor, you can start
slowly by adding plant foods in your diet.
Consume more vegetables. At lunch and dinner, fill half
of your plate with veggies. Choose from a wide range of
colours or have veggies as a snack with guacamole, salsa
or hummus.
In addition, add more green leafy vegetables such as
Swiss chard, kale, spinach and collards to your plate. You
can grill, steam, stir-fry or braise them as you like.
Try building a meal around a salad. At first, you can fill a
medium-sized bowl with greens such as bibb, spinach or
romaine, and then add other ingredients, such as tofu,
peas or beans.
Have whole grains for breakfast. You can start with quinoa,
barley, oatmeal or buckwheat. Plus, add some seeds, nuts
or fresh fruits too.
Final Thoughts
Plant-based diets offer a host of health benefits, including
for skin and digestion. These foods are also loaded with
vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals,
TIPS
TO HELP YOU
STICK TO YOUR
FITNESS GOAL
Personal trainer
MARIUS CRISTIAN
shares his tips for sticking to your
fitness goal.
The best tip to help you stick to your
fitness goal I would say is for you to
understand why are you doing it.
Otherwise, it’s like being on a road
going straight, but you don’t know
where you are going. So put in your
mind or on a piece of paper - “why?”
Whether your fitness goal is getting that summer body,
looking good at the pool or getting healthier, put it
down on paper or make a mental list.
My other top tips would be:
1. Clear your fridge and cupboards of all the soft
drinks, processed foods and sweets as what you
have in the house is what you are most likely to
eat.
2. Leave your comfort zone. Stop making excuses …
‘’I don’t have time! I’m too lazy; too sleepy; too
tired; my dog is feeling sick...’’ These excuses will
get you nowhere on the fitness journey. If you are
serious about your fitness, workout will become
a priority. You are unlikely to hear a motivated
person making excuses for not working out.
Instead, they creating a balance between keeping
fit and managing family and work.
3. Cook your meals at home! You say you don’t have
time? Instead of waking up at 8 am every day,
wake up an hour early to cook your meals. This
way you keep track of what you eat and you know
exactly what you put into your body.
4. Get into the gym. Put your headphones on (this
is what I do and I turn off the world completely),
leave your thoughts and whatever issues you are
facing and give the exercise as much as you can.
5. Your body can take a lot of ‘’torture’’... Your mind
would be the problem. Try fixing that issue and
you will see things changing.
TRAVEL WITH LEELA
CHARMED BY LISBON
As with many of the places I’ve travelled to, Portugal was on my bucket list for a long time before I
finally got the opportunity to go. I can’t remember what sparked my interest. Maybe it was a picture
or something I’d heard about Lisbon. What I did know is that eventually I would find my way there.
To say that Portugal was everything I expected would be an understatement. I was absolutely
smitten with the vibrant colours of the city as well how alive it was even at two o’clock in the
morning. I enjoyed every single moment I spent there. Most of our time was spent in Lisbon with
a short trip to Porto.
To be honest, there is so much I could write about Lisbon. This would end up being a long article
and it wouldn’t be good use of your time or mine. Instead, I’m just going to share with you the
highlights of the trip.
HIGHLIGHTS OF LISBON
TIMEOUT MARKET
I definitely recommend going to the Time Out Market at
least twice while in Lisbon. It’s an open seating space with
different restaurants boasting of extensive menus. There
is something for everybody to enjoy. We went there too
many times to mention as we were determined to sample
as much of the food as we could. I recommend going there
for dinner because it gets really crowded during the day.
FOOD TOUR
When I travel, I always book a food tour or a cooking
class. I’m a huge foodie and I think food is an
important part of any culture. To better understand
the people, it’s good to understand their food.
Portugal is no different. The Portuguese love their
food especially Bacalhau, which is salted cod fish. We
booked this food tour through Viator (through which
I always book) and it was one of the best parts of our
trip! Not only did we learn about the food, but also
much about the history and landscape of the country.
It was fantastic!
SINTRA
I remember seeing pictures of Pena Palace plastered all over social
media and fell in love with it immediately. I knew that I had to go
Sintra once I went to Portugal. We booked this tour through Viator
as well. It was combined trip to Cascais as well as to Cabo da Roca,
which is the westernmost part of Europe. The weather was great
for the most part. A little chillier than we had expected, but it was
beautiful nonetheless.
Pena Palace is breathtaking and unique - an absolute must see.
The beaches in Cascais are superb, boasting of crystal clear waters.
I highly recommend booking a tour and going. I know people take
public transportation and go on their own. Logistically it’s more
convenient to get the tour. Plus, the tours take you to other parts of
Portugal. So you get to see more of the country which is awesome.
IBO RESTAURANT
Apart from TimeOut Market, this place provided one of our favourite
meals in Lisbon. Located at Cais do Sodre in a former warehouse,
this beautiful space overlooks the Tagus River and draws culinary
inspiration from Mozambique. The food was amazing. Probably one
of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to in life. The service was topnotch
as well. Please check it out if you’re ever in Lisbon. Be sure to
make reservations because it’s a very popular restaurant.
BAIRRO ALTO
This is the place to be if you want to have a good time. There
are lots of bars and bustling nightlife. I love the live music and
the cheap but good drinks that keeps this part of town alive well
into the wee hours of the morning. There are also tons of little
restaurants that serve yummy tapas. We spent quite a few nights
exploring the narrow streets, popping in and out of bars. We
even discovered an authentic Brazilian restaurant called Acaraje
da Carol with awesome live music.
I admit that this review by no means comes close to capturing
all the charm of Lisbon. There is so much to see and do and I
guarantee that you won’t be bored even for a minute. This is a
city you need to visit for yourself. Add it to your list and go ASAP.
THE IDENTIFICATION
OF THE MODERN MAN
JEROME DOUGLAS
There are a plethora of questions that linger
around the identity of the modern man.
These questions set you on a journey, a journey
that exemplifies the words of Lao Tzu, “a journey
of a thousand miles begins with the first step.”
This quote can be further explained with regards
to our current muse like this - the journey to true
identification of the modern man is more abstract
than you think. The journey of a thousand miles
actually begins with the first thought of the
definition of… well… YOU!
Since the beginning of time, the man, a soulful,
poignant and emotional being, was meant to
lead, love, fight and hunt. Additionally, he was
also meant to honour, care, share, be feared, to
decide and befriend.
by society, culture and psychological intellect.
His power rested in his will, skill and the thrill of
stamping his authority, leading the charge on the
expedition, being the commander in chief, first
part taker of the kill. He liked to have a level of
dominance and be a hardworking breadwinner.
The concept of being a breadwinner was defined
As time passed by and the world become modernised, the concept of man also changed. With
liberation of women, men began to question who they are even more. Or rather, who they are
not.
What is a man’s role in modernity? What is his reality now? There is a freedom to choose. Is he
the leader from the front, a relic, or a follower who leads from the middle of the pack? What is
the identity of the modern man? Who defines him?
Many factors contribute to a man’s development and sustenance - his willpower, upbringing,
family status, early childhood experiences, etc. Someone rightly said, “It takes a village to raise
a child.” Today’s man is raised by the global village. The modern man is instinctively more
adventurous. And he knows that the globalised world is his playground.
Likewise, a modern man’s mind is a kaleidoscope; a web of variety, a web of the same fabric,
55

much for less; the modern man is self-sustained. The
modern man is confused for being egotistical and calm,
but he understands more than most that liberation is the
truest form of creativity.
The identity of the modern man says that he is
passionate. His passion is a religion, a god. He goes
for what brings him enjoyment and life. He realises that
having a passion brings romance to life.
The true reflection of a modern man’s image is portrayed
by his level of integrity; the modern man knows his
beliefs and values should align with whom or what he
wants to be.
The modern man has empathy from perception and
less from reality. He is able to feel the emotions, taste
the quality of tears (fake or real), and dissect jolly from
the act of being folly. He can see situations from the
standpoint of all else.
Similarly, the modern man is driven by goals set for
success. He recognises that competition makes the
heart stronger, the soul purer and the spirit steadier. He
gives his best version to the goal. He sets his sails on
overcoming all adversities, commanding strong rational,
insight, foresight and hindsight. The modern man is in
control of his own destiny.
He can use his weaknesses as his greatest strength. His
will to expand his consciousness is unparalleled. He
believes that learning is a never ending cycle. He must
never stop adding to his scope, or else will never really
live.
He knows that he is the owner of his troubles. He
knows being vulnerable is the beginning of his inner
strength. Failure is not a deterrent. So he is unafraid to
express his limitations. His ability to be honest about
his disappointments, socialisation, feelings on certain
principles or circumstances, or similar characteristics
with people, broadens his respect for self.
The modern man is not shy to express his sexuality.
He knows fear is the greatest killer of acceptance. He
is man enough to appreciate his trinity (mind, body
and soul), and he is not afraid to lose himself to win.
He understands both tradition and modernity and he
redefines himself for his own greater good. He will love
who he will with or without your approval.
Consequently, the modern man knows that desperation
is the key that unlocks the door to moral failure. He
knows that this race called life is set for a 100M sprint.
In this sprint, it is the speed of thought that is most
important.
The modern perception of a man says that he knows
what he means when he says what he wants. The modern
man is strong on values that mean much to him. After
all, only when he follows his values can he be the best
version of himself.
Equally, the modern man is prepared to take risks.
Risks are lessons if the outcome is perceived by others
as failure. The modern man knows that success is not
defined by first place trophies or gold medals. He knows
showing heart and fight are not consequences or losses,
but they are rewards for a new view and new ideas.
Winners always win.
The modern man defines himself as a role model or a
father figure. The one a son looks up to as brave and
resilient, a man his daughter knows as her first true love,
a husband to the alluring eyes of his wife and a reigning
champion for his people. He demonstrates modern
thought in processes, actions and deeds.
Finally, the world has liberated the modern man. His
identification is not restricted to anyone’s beliefs,
practices, ideologies, thoughts or purpose. He is who
he is without fear of what your definition of him is. He
is open-minded, unconventional and untraditionally
traditional. Hence, he doesn’t care to identify with your
perception. He appreciates your opinion of him, just
much less than his of himself.
He is not a victim of the system. He instead identifies
himself outside of the normative codes. He is progressive
enough to respect culture, but creative enough to add a
new paradigm to a way of life. Therefore, the modern man
is not defined by opinions and perspective. He knows that
change is a constant factor that results in a new reality.
The modern man accepts that leaders can assume any
position, but nothing will stop him from leading. He is
an all-rounder, a handyman - he plays any position on
the court, but he will never divorce himself from victory.
The modern man is demarcated by his acceptance of
his time and his will to progress through process; the
definition of the modern man, no less.
