Ashafa urges speedy consideration,
passage of 2019 Appropriation Bill

LAGOS—THE Senator
representing Lagos
East Senatorial District,
Gbenga Ashafa has called
on the Federal
Government to ensure
quick and frequent capital
releases to ensure that the
2019 budget is adequately
implemented.
The Senator made this
remark, Wednesday,
during his contribution to
the general principles of the
2019 budget on the floor of
the Senate on 13th March,
2019.
Recall that President
Muhammadu Buhari
formally presented the 2019
budget proposal of N8.83
trillion at a joint session of
the National Assembly on
Wednesday 19, December
2018.
According to Ashafa
“Like I usually emphasise
it is not the size of the
budget that is most
important. What is most
important is its
implementation. Though
we may have a large
budget, without
implementation is as good
as no budget.
"This is an area that I
would want the executive
to look at in a manner that
capital would be increased
and released on time with
primary focus on going
critical infrastructural
projects.”
He further stated that the
government in its bid to
diversify the economy has
placed much importance
on Agriculture, adding that
in the absence of a good
transportation system
movement of farm produce
will be difficult.
He therefore,
commended the Executive
for including in the 2019
budget allocations that will
improve on the
transportation system of the
country.

Uber plans to kick off IPO in April
Ride-hailing company Uber Technologies Inc is plan
ning to kick off its initial public offering in April,
putting it close on the heels of its smaller rival Lyft Inc,
people familiar with the matter said on Thursday.
Next month, Uber will issue its required public disclosure,
known as an S-1, and launch its investor roadshow,
the people said.
The timing for Uber’s IPO means it will most likely be
hitting the public markets soon after Lyft completes its
own public offering, which is expected to happen by the
end of March, people familiar with the matter said.

Deutsche Bank’s Prized Hedge
Fund Unit in Downward Spiral

catering to hedge funds is on its way to becoming
yet another casualty of the German lender’s chronic turmoil.
The German firm’s revenue from prime services declined
for a third straight year in 2018, while rivals
Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and JPMorgan
Chase & Co. all saw jumps, according to people with
knowledge of the business.
Revenue from the high-stakes business of executing
trades and lending securities to hedge funds has dropped
by more than a third since 2015, said the people, who
declined to be identified because the bank doesn’t publicly
detail its prime results. The slump was a major contributor
to Deutsche Bank’s loss of about $750 million
in its equity trading division last year, according to them.
The firm said the reference to the size of the decline was
inaccurate.
Deutsche Bank, previously the poster child for European
firms seeking to wrest trading dominance from Wall
Street rivals, has seen key divisions enter a downward
spiral over the past decade as the firm lurched from crisis
to crisis. One of them is prime services. (Bloomberg)
Huawei pleads not guilty to
U.S. charges in New York court
China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd on Thursday
pleaded not guilty to a 13-count indictment filed in
a New York federal court against the company, as tensions
have ratcheted up between the U.S. and Beijing.
Huawei, the world’s largest telecommunications equipment
maker, was charged with bank and wire fraud, violating
sanctions against Iran and obstructing justice.
The company’s chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou,
was arrested in December in Canada on charges in the
indictment, which was not unsealed until January. She has
said she is innocent of the charges and is fighting extradition.
At the arraignment in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn,
James Cole, a U.S. lawyer for Huawei, entered the plea
on behalf of the company and its U.S. subsidiary.

General Electric CEO sets low
2019 profit targets, vows better
from 2020
General Electric Co Chief Executive Larry Culp on
Thursday set conservative profit targets for this
year and staked his reputation on hitting them and doing
better in 2020 and beyond, igniting a rally in the stock.
Culp’s detailed pep talk, which drew praise from Wall
Street analysts on a conference call, swiftly reversed an
earlier rout in the stock as he stressed GE was serious
about its targets after years of missing profit expectations.
The forecast was low largely because GE will be spending
$2.5 billion on restructuring this year, Culp said, adding
the investment would pay off after a tough 2019.
“This is what constitutes a ‘reset,’” Culp said, using a
word many analysts had longed to hear.
“The market should interpret a high level of conviction
(in the forecast) simply because this team, in a public forum,
is laying this roadmap out, mindful of the realities
of 2019 but I think also optimistic ... about the impact of
what we’re doing.” (Reuters).
