Peter Duffy Limited attend Wakefield
College ‘Next Steps’ Apprenticeship Fair
It is well publicised that there is a skills shortage
in the construction industry and efforts are being
made by many in the industry to attract young
people in to the sector which has such a diverse
range of career opportunities.
The industry cannot ignore it and Peter Duffy Limited
plays it’s part whenever the opportunity arises by
supporting local events run by our local schools and
colleges to inform students about career opportunities
in civil engineering.
To celebrate National Apprenticeship week at the
beginning of March, Peter Duffy Limited attended the
‘Next Steps’ apprenticeship fair arranged by Wakefield
College on March 6th.
Melissa Stead and our current apprentices; Liam Burke
(apprentice Civil Engineer) and Josh Carter (higher
level apprentice Quantity Surveyor), pictured, were in
attendance to offer advice to those considering an
apprenticeship position and inspire the next generation
of construction workers in all the different aspects of
the industry.

MATES IN MIND
The construction industry is
committed to a healthier future
and this includes mental health.
We all have mental health just as
we all physical health and both
have their ups and downs. With
mental health, stigma silences
people who fear disclosure,
hindering their access to support.
The construction industry thrives on
change and teamwork, so together we
can build thriving mental health. We
don’t need to be experts to talk about
it; we simply need confidence to start
the conversation.
Did you know that 1 in 6 of us has a
mental health problem such as stress,
anxiety or depression, yet 1 in 5 fears
disclosure of these issues.
We have mental health First Aiders and
mental health Champions for you to
approach. A list of these people is
available from HR and also published
on notice boards.
We also have a dedicated email
address (mh@peterduffyltd.com) that
you can contact if you feel you are
unable to start the conversation face
to face
As part of Peter Duffy Limited’s
commitment to health and well-being,
we’re digging out the Lycra and joining
Yorkshire’s fastest growing charity bike
ride.
The event raises money for 3 charities
close to our hearts; the Alzheimer’s
Society, British Heart Foundation and
St Leonard’s Hospice, who care and
support for York’s local people with life
limiting illnesses.
We are joining the Yorkshire Corker,
starting in York, on Sunday 2nd June,
and subsidising the entry fee for our
employees. But don’t worry if you’re no
Chris Froome, there’s a choice of 3
routes ranging from beginner to
advanced.
The ‘Half Pint’ beginner route starts at
10am and covers 32 miles to Howsham
and back.
The ‘Full Pint’ intermediate route,
which will see cyclists ride to Malton
and back, starts at 9am and covers a
distance of 60 miles.
And for all you advanced riders, the
‘Stein’ route is sure to test your
abilities, starting at 8am and covering a
massive 95 miles.

Thank you for undertaking the survey works at such short
notice at the Wakefield Road Roundabout, much
appreciated. With regards to feedback for your performance,
it has been outstanding. The workmen who attended site
carried out the works in a very safe manner and adhered to
all site rules. The turnaround of the information was also very
quick and to a high standard indeed. I will keep you in mind
for our survey once we have completed the project.

However we did receive the following complaint from a
resident on Park View - Could we please ensure that
when we have employees starting work early and have
to use the intercom to gain entry to the yard that they
turn their car radio’s down or off if they are leaving their
car doors open as the music is extremely loud.
INTERPRETING HEALTH & SAFETY
Peter Duffy Limited has been utilising the services of an
interpreter to assist with health and safety inductions and
training. We have an increasing number of employees whose
first language is not English and to ensure that they gain a
full understanding of the key elements of health and safety
we have been providing inductions and training in their first
language.
Above we show some of our Polish colleagues undergoing
utility avoidance training at Lofthouse with the help of
interpreter Beata Mulvaney shown left in the picture.

HOLLYWOOD COMES TO
EGGBOROUGH POWER STATION

Peter Duffy Limited has a term
contract at the Eggborough Power
Station and was recently
approached by Universal Studios
to carry out enabling work at the
power station for their new film
Hobbs and Shaw, which will be a
spin off from the Fast and Furious
franchise which will be released in
August this year. The film will star
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Jason
Statham and Idris Elba.
The team carried out various
works including demolition of ex
structures, concrete roadways,
concrete base slabs and widening
of existing roads to help create the
set for the film.
EXCAVATOR FLEET INCREASED
Peter Duffy Limited has recently
added one Doosan DX300LC and
two Doosan DX225LC to its fleet
of excavators. These new units
supplement the existing Doosan
units owned by the company.
Doosan excavators, (previously
known as Daewoo) have been a
constant and reliable part of the
company’s fleet for over twenty
five years and range in size from
1.5t to 30t.
Supplied by Filtermech of
Wakefield the machines were
deployed to site during February.

DRAINSAID WINS PLACE ON FOUR YEAR COUNCIL HIGHWAY FRAMEWORK
DrainsAid, the drainage division of Peter Duffy
Limited, has secured a place on the Yorkshire
Highway Alliance Framework to undertake
drainage repair and maintenance work between
now and the 31st January 2023.
Works will comprise of, but not be limited to;
drainage excavation repairs, drainage jetting,
gully cleansing and the maintenance of ditches
and dykes.
We are pleased to announce that DrainsAid has
been accepted on all of the 6 lots tendered for,
which include the councils of Bradford,
Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds, Wakefield and York.

PETER’S
UPDATE
March 2019
On the whole
we have had a
successful quarter
period to the end of February. Despite the
winter we didn’t experience the usual
seasonal slow down and have maintained
turnover levels in all departments. We have
seen the number of employees grow and
continued investment in fleet, plant and
equipment. The one thing that has been
disappointing though is the downturn in our
safety performance.
Disappointing because most of the recent
incidents were avoidable but for some
reason the individuals concerned in these
incidents have failed to follow procedure
and best practice. We know that we can do
better so let us make sure that we do what
we say, and put safety first.
The decision from the planners at Wakefield
council was also disappointing and has
delayed further our relocation plans.
It is always difficult to look ahead further
than two months and to predict with any
level of confidence, what the immediate
future will look like. Of course this next
quarter more than ever, will be
unpredictable as it is in the hands of the
politicians and we shall have to see what the
impact will be. However indicators in the
developer sector remains quite positive with
recent new contract starts and others
expected in the coming weeks. A large part
of our future lies in our own hands by
ensuring that we work safely and we get it
right first time with quality jobs
to provide the best opportunity
of repeat business. Despite our slip in health
and safety I’d like to thank everybody for
their hard work and look forward
to a strong finish to our year.

SLOUGH STATION
PLATFORM EXTENSION
Work is well underway on site at
Sherburn with the new pumping station
and the surface water swale both
progressing well aided by the recent spell
For a number of years now Peter
Duffy Limited has been working with
Megatech Projects Limited on
platform extensions for existing train
stations. The latest scheme to be
completed was at Slough in
Berkshire, West London.
From mid-December a team of 7
operatives prepared the Megatech
units for the platform in the yard at
Lofthouse, the units were then
transported to Slough train station
for installation.
In a 48 hour period shutdown
beginning on the evening of Friday
15th February 6 of our operatives
installed the units on platform 4. The
works were successful and the
platform was fully operational by
Monday morning and being used by
morning commuters.
Megatech Projects James Malin said,

personally for the great work they
have done over the weekend’
Progress Update from Sherburn S2 Phase 2
of good weather in February. This is phase
2 of the development at the Sherburn site
for client Glentrool and is scheduled to be
completed in April 2019.
