RoSPA Award and
Safety Week 2019
We are pleased to announce that Peter Duffy
Limited has recently been awarded the RoSPA
Presidents Award for 10 consecutive RoSPA
Gold Awards.
The RoSPA Awards scheme, which receives entries
from organisations around the world, recognises
achievement in health and safety management systems,
including practices such as leadership and workforce
involvement and allow organisations to prove
excellence in the workplace, demonstrating a
commitment to the wellbeing of not only employees but
all those who interact with it. SHEQ manager Chris
Woodward will be presented with the award at a
ceremony in London on 18th June.
In order to continually improve Peter Duffy Limited
regularly reviews and considers changes for further
improvement. Part of this strategy is to provide training
and have consultation with employees. An event that
supports this is the company stand down day.
3-7 June 2019 was safety week across Peter Duffy
Limited and the main part of the week consisted of
safety stand downs for all employees held at the
Holiday Inn, Barnsley.
RoSPA Award and
Safety Week 2019
(Continued from front page) These events covered topics
on; behavioural safety, pre-inspection checks, risk
assessment and mental health awareness using the Mates
in Mind charity material. These were held in separate
workshops which provided variation for the delegates and
the opportunity to contribute in smaller groups.
Safety First is the company mantra meaning all
employees are expected to put safety before every other
consideration. Employees who attended were asked to
sign a number of pledges;
• to work safely, not to knowingly let their
actions put them or others at risk
• not to undertake anything they are not
trained to do
• to be accountable for their actions and
• not to walk by an unsafe situation
Interaction across each session was good with
employees providing positive conversations and valuable
feedback.
COMPLIMENTS
Over the course of the past few months we have
received a number of compliments from clients.
Pauline Walker Network Rail, to thank Andy Saville,
Kenny Spink and Mike Booth for a great job at Grayrigg.
Praise for DrainsAid from our clients C Donnelly Civil
Engineering and Havercroft Construction Ltd who
particularly wanted to praise Wayne Egans team for
going 'above and beyond'.
Malcolm MacDonald would like to thank Alan McKay
and Duncan Sowerby for their input into the grit
blasting trolley for Scalby Mills.
Adam Barnes received praise from Mr Simon Wigfield a
private works customer who added ‘it is nice to know
that there are still some reputable and professional
companies/people still out there and I will of course
feed this back to any friends/relatives who require
drains service’.
Chris Woodward visited Craig Yates & Joe Smedley and
wanted to say how he was very impressed with them
both. The two of them stood out on site from the client
and another contractor on site and I could see that they
had tried to influence safety on site. Please pass on my
thanks to the lads.
NEW EQUIPMENT INVESTMENT
Brawoliner training using our new inversion drum
DrainsAid has recently invested in two new pieces of
equipment; the BRAWO Drum DN 800 and the Hachler CL50
Milling Robot.
The stainless steel BRAWO inversion drum is ideal for
vertical inversion and the rehabilitation of long sections of
pipes. This new addition to our fleet will allow for the easiest
and most effective installation of our Brawoliner into vertical
small diameter pipes that have multiple bends or changes in
diameter
The Hachler CL50
The Hachler CL50 is perfect for use on small diameter pipes
of 52mm to 155mm. The CL50 is equipped with an extremely
strong air motor and an integrated slipping gearing. The
robot’s pneumatic drive enables it to climb up steeply
inclined pipes and negotiate 90 degree bends. The CL50,
which is also known as the ‘Climbolino’, can remove
deposits, roots and pipe edges, and cut lateral connections,
even in pipes with limited access.

VOLUNTEERING!
Peter Duffy Limited has agreed to support one of our local
community groups, the Lofthouse Colliery Action Group. LCAG are a
group of people who have joined together for a common purpose -
to support Lofthouse Colliery Nature Park and they work in
Partnership with Wakefield Council Countryside team.
The Lofthouse Colliery closed in 1981. Since it was restored in the
late 1980’s the nature park has changed constantly with trees
maturing into a varied woodland of native species. The footpaths
around the nature park are named after the coal seams that were
mined at Lofthouse Colliery. The Action Group are volunteers who
get together to enhance the park for wildlife and people and
working with the council’s countryside team they carry out practical
improvements.
Colleague Lorraine Hall kindly volunteered to liaise with the group
and volunteers from Peter Duffy Limited will be assisting the group
on one of the volunteering days, 10th July, to carry out
enhancement of the footpaths. If you would like more information
on the group please contact Lorraine in the plant office (that’s
mechanical not organic!) or visit their facebook page.
INNOVATION
Peter Duffy Limited is proud to announce that
we are officially the first company in the UK to
be accredited by NSF International for the
spray-lining of wastewater pipes.
After spending three days working hard to complete
numerous tests and training, the accreditation was granted
to the DrainsAid team by the public health and safety
organisation ‘NSF International.’
In a collaborative approach with Yorkshire Water, Schur Ltd
and Axalta, we were able to use the advanced SR1000
Pipeline Rig recently to successfully spray line a 250mm
diameter rising main in Outwood for Yorkshire Water.
Patented as CORROLESS ‘Pipe in Pipe,’ this sprayable lining is
applied using a centrifugal process, which is suitable for iron,
cement mortar lined, clay and steel pipes with diameters of
75mm to 2000mm.
The carbon-fibre reinforced spray-coating is designed to
deliver maximum strength and durability, and can
incorporate customised pipe base thickness for highly
abrasive flows. It is designed to remain intact even after the
original pipe has decayed away.
Well done to our amazing crew on
another exciting achievement!

PETER’S
UPDATE
June 2019
CONTRACT AWARD
As we closed out our business year at the end
of May, we missed our targets for health and
safety due to a poor start to the year however, I’m
pleased to say that we saw an improvement in our
performance in the past quarter. The importance of how
our behaviours can influence this was reinforced during
the recent safety week stand downs which have been
well received. On another positive note I’m pleased to
say that we have closed the year by achieving our overall
target for commercial performance with some
departments exceeding while others narrowly missing
their respective targets. After two tough years we have
done very well to meet this key element of our company
Vision.
The improvements in both these areas; health and safety
and commercial, support our Mission to have a safe and
sustainable business. I thank everybody for their
commitment and helping to create a great place to work.
In this coming year I’m keen that we focus more on our
environmental performance particularly in reducing our
energy use and our carbon footprint. We will be using the
data we have been collecting and using this to
understand how and where we can do better.
Opportunities and enquiries have dropped off which is
likely to result in a drop off in activity in the short term
however we have been busy bidding for some longer
term framework opportunities, some are re-tenders for
existing and some new frameworks, which if successful
will bring some stability in the medium term.
Remember that we can each influence these
opportunities by ensuring we work safely and that we
get it right first time every time to provide the best
opportunity of repeat business.
I look forward to providing an update after the summer.
In the expectation that we have a good
summer I hope that you each enjoy it.
Peter Duffy
and a 30m single span adoptable road bridge over the River Don. On
completion, the works will improve access to the 110 acre site allowing
development works to proceed and opening up this beautiful waterside and
woodland setting, enabling public access for the first time to new trails, walks
and a cycling route.
The full scope includes
• Construction of 200m of new highway under S38 agreement
• Junction improvement works under S278 agreement
