Guilt-free shopping
in Budapest
Plastic pollution ranks high on the
environmental Don’t list, but mastering
plastic free or zero waste living – especially
while on the road - can be challenging. As
awareness of the hazards of microplastics, food
waste and the environmental impacts of certain
industries is increasingly raised, more shops pop
up worldwide with environmental issues at the
heart of their vision and ethics. Budapest is no
exception: Don’t waste - Zero waste shop,
for example, was brought to life by two mothers
who wanted to live greener, thereby doing
something for the future of their children. As the
name suggests, customers shopping or enjoying
their morning coffee here do not create any
additional waste. Products arrive in bulks and you
buy exactly as much as you wish by filling up your
own containers and jars. Buda II, Fő u. 79. www.
While grabbing a T-shirt from a souvenir shop seems
a fail-safe gift idea, fast fashion is one of the dirtiest
industries in the world. Working with local artists,
using upcycled, organic materials, and handcrafted
techniques are Printa’s (pictured)answers to the
problem. The designer team is always on the hunt
for old treasures and revives them by dyeing,
retailoring or screen-printing them to create
something new and unique. Shelves are packed
with unique design objects, cool prints: the organic
cotton clothes and accessories provide a stylish and
ethical alternative to cliché souvenirs. Listing, p.22.
