Hempology CBD officially opened in Homer Glen in January and began really advertising itself on social media last month. It specializes in selling a variety of products containing cannabidiol, a naturally occurring compound in industrial hemp. Hemp is part of the cannabis family of plants, though different from the marijuana plant in that it contains much less tetrahydrocannabinol, the ingredient in marijuana that gives users a “high.” The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, or Farm Bill, recently legalized hemp production in all 50 states, and Illinois is currently working on licensing systems in what is still considered a new and growing industry. Jeff Baffa, of Frankfort, owned Valhalla Vitamins in Homer Glen and began selling CBD products there last September. Seeing the fit and potential for them, he converted the store into Hempology CBD with now co-owners Mark Diorio, of Mokena, and Dan Kaminski, of Orland Park and a Tinley Park native. The trio of owners was present for the store’s official ribbon cutting Feb. 27 with Village of Homer Hempology CBD co-owner Dan Kaminski, of Orland Park and a Tinley Park native, inspects some of the products geared toward pets at the Homer Glen store. Glen and Heritage Corridor Business Alliance officials to further explain what it is exactly they sell. “We are bringing a new idea and new product to your town,” Kaminski told those in attendance, adding the THC in the CBD products has to be less than .3 percent. “What we are trying to do is bring [CBD] to the community with top manufacturers. Our manufacturers have been vetted by us. You can research all of these manufacturers online. “They all are top in the industry and have thirdparty lab testing, which is big for us and the consumer.” The owners first thoroughly research the products they offer, making sure the aforementioned third-party lab tests everything for purity and potency, covering things like THC, heavy metals, pesticides and foreign materials. Everything in the store is organically grown in the United States and is non-psychoactive, as well as non-habit-forming. “There is a big misconception out there that this is marijuana and going to get you stoned,” Diorio said. “Nobody is getting stoned off CBD or hemp. It is a kind of lifestyle you introduce to your body, like vitamins. You take them every day, you’re going to feel better.” The products sold can act as alternative options to more traditional pharmaceutical treatments and can have therapeutic benefits for arthritis, chronic pain, inflammation, insomnia, anxiety, migraines and much more, according to the business. Products sold include everything from tinctures to edibles to capsules to vapes to skincare to infused drinks to honey to even items for pets, all with CBD in them. The CBD binds to receptors in the immune system to positively impact how one feels, moves and reacts. “You come to our store, you know you are getting a good, safe, clean product,” Baffa said, again stressing they only use top brands that have been third party tested. Despite a number of customers noting improvement in their ailments after using the products so far and returning for more, according to Kaminski, he said they never say that CBD will cure anything. If they do that and find their sweet spot, it is pretty successful, usually.” Still, the owners remind customers they are not medical professionals, and that individuals should always consult with a doctor to be safe before using these or any other supplemental dietary products. Products should only be used as directed on the label, and hemp should not be used if someone is pregnant or nursing. Hempology CBD in Homer Glen, a business which recently celebrated its ribbon cutting Feb. 27, offers a number of product options that contain cannabidiol that can provide therapeutic benefits for different ailments. There are educational booklets for customers to look up specific ailments with staff for the latest information and research on if hemp would or would not be a good option. Seeing firsthand customers put a CBD cream on their arthritic hands and the pain and redness goes down within 10 minutes or hours, or hearing that people are sleeping better, their shoulder is not hurting as much or a multitude of other scenarios makes it a feel-good business for the owners, Kaminski said. Kaminski added that more research and further regulations are in store for the future of the industry as the call for CBD’s alternative therapeutic benefits grows, but he is confident in its safety now and what it can do. “We want to take it one step at a time and want to be accepted in Homer Glen in this community,” Kaminski said. “We want people to say they go to this store because we know our stuff.” Hempology CBD is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
