winnetkacurrent.com LIFE & ARTS the winnetka current | March 21, 2019 | 21 Winnetka native’s memoir released in podcast Libby Elliott Freelance Reporter Over the course of her 50-year career, actor, author and songwriter Jessica Harper has amassed a long list of film and television credits and worked with an impressive collection of Hollywood legends including Brian De Palma, Woody Allen, Bette Midler and Tom Cruise, to name a few. But long before Harper launched her Hollywood career, she was a just little girl living in 1950’s Winnetka, one of six children born to Eleanor and Paul Harper. Harper’s funny, heartfelt, insightful memoir of her Eisenhower-era childhood was released in the form of the weekly, 10-episode podcast, Winnetka, now available through the Global/DAX digital audio advertising network, in association with The Podglomerate. Like many children growing up in bucolic Winnetka, Harper enjoyed a free-range childhood riding tricycles with her twin brother down Willow Road, attending elementary school at Crow Island and building sand castles on Tower Beach. But while 1950’s postwar-suburban America may have seemed like an idyllic time and place, life for Harper and her siblings wasn’t all happy days. “On the surface, Winnetka seemed as scenic and vibrant a home town as there ever was,” Harper said in Winnetka’s trailer. “But sometimes that surface would crack, revealing darkness below. It wasn’t until after my father’s death in 2013 that I learned just how deep that darkness went.” Harper and her young brothers and sisters lived in fear of their father’s PTSD-induced rages, and jockeyed for attention in their large, chaotic family. The siblings would eventually discover a long-held secret about their ancestry. Written, narrated and with music performed by Harper herself, Winnetka features the voices of all the Harper siblings, as well as previously collected recordings of their late mother. Together, the family retells the remarkable story of growing up during America’s great baby boom and coming of age within the counterculture of the 1960s. Harper’s memoir focuses in large part on her father Paul, one of the real-life 1960’s “mad men.” Born in 1920, Harper’s father was part of the America’s “Greatest Generation,” men (and women) who grew up in the United States during the Great Depression and went on to fight in World War II. Returning home to Chicago after the war, Harper married and began ascending the ranks of the advertising industry, eventually becoming chair of Needham Harper Worldwide. Like many women of her generation, Harper’s Bryn Mawr-educated mother cared for the couple’s six young children, including two sets of twins. “The problem with being a stay-at-home mom wasn’t that the work was so hard, it was that it wasn’t valued,” Eleanor Harper said in Winnetka. The Harpers eventually left Chicago and resettled outside New York City, the family’s formative years in “waspy, emotional-repressed” Winnetka serve as a backdrop for the podcast’s first half. “Winnetka in the 1950s A Memoir is a podcast released by actress Jessica Harper, who grew up in a six-kid household during Eisenhower’s postwar America.
