Gbadamosi has urged the new Chief
Imam of the University of Lago
Central, Dr. Ismail Musa to be wary
of “innovations,” adding that
innovations could jeopadize the
legacies left by former Imams of the
community.
In a lecture he delivered at the
installation ceremony of the new
Imam titled “The Role of Chief Imam
in The University Community,”
Prof. Tajudeen Gbadamosi who is
also a former Chief Imam of the
community, emphasized the
imperatives of leadership of service
that will meet the needs of the
Muslim community.
“Things you have to be cautious of
are fundamentally in the way of
innovations. Innovation and fresh
ideas should always be in
compliance with the Quran and the
traditions of the Prophet. Be wary of
innovations that can jeopardize the
legacies that your predecessors
have left behind,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor, UNILAG,
Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe in his
address, commended the
University Muslim Community for
upholding the spirit of love, peaceful
coexistence and harmony among
adherents of other religions in the
University.
He noted that gesture of love and
friendship his administration has
enjoyed from the University Muslim
community was unrivaled in the
comity of universities in the
country.
Ogundipe however, urged the new
Chief Imam to sustain the spirit of
love and peaceful coexistence
among other legacies that have been
laid by the previous leaderships of
the community.
The Chairman, UMC, Prof. Lai
Olurode in his welcome address,
expressed joy at the level of
Rajab 15, 1440 A.H.
development recorded by
the Muslim community in the
last few years.
Olurode, who said the UMC
achievements were made
possible by the support of the
University management and
members of the Muslim
community, urged Muslims
to continue to give their
support to the managment of
the Ivory Tower.
The Pro Chancellor of the
University and Chairman of
the occasion, Dr. Wale
Babalakin commended the
leadership of the UMC, noting
that the past leaderships have
laid good legacies which are
now paying off.
In his acceptance speech, the
new Chief Imam, Dr Musa said,
“I have accepted the
appointment as a
responsibility to contribute to
the development of the
University and the humanity as
a whole.”
In his goodwill message, a
former Vice Chancellor of the
University and one-time
Chairman of UMC, Prof.
Rahmon Bello, expressed
optimism that the new
leadership would work the
vision of the Muslim
Community and accomplish
great heights.
Prof Olurode tasks Ansar-ud-Deen on
political engagement, inclusiveness
AS Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Council
marks her 40th Anniversary, scholar has called on the
organization to intensify positive engagements with political
parties and seek inclusiveness in the national polity of Nigeria.
Prof. Lai Olurode of Department of Sociology, University of
Lagos (UNILAG) made the assertion while delivering a Lecture
titled “The Role of Followership in Leadership’s Success,” to
mark the 40th Anniversary of the society.
Olurode said, “At this stage, Ansar-Ud-Deen has to adequately
engage the state. You must work on spreading membership to
achieve the best for the organization. By now, there has to be a
sincere action plan on seeking inclusiveness.
The Chairman, UNILAG Muslim Community (UNILAG) also
stressed that the Society should work on more visibility for
the women folk in the organization. He said, “More policies
that will make women more visible in our engagement with
the stakeholders in our national polity.
Women are very influential in driving the mission of any
organization.” Meanwhile, Olurode raised concern as to the
extent the Society has been able to meet the objectives of its
founding fathers after about 100 years of existence.
He said, “For the avoidance of doubt, Ansar-Ud-Deen’s
principal objectives are promotion of education, reformation
and propagation and defense of Islam.”
He said the organization should build on institutionalization
of its core values rather than building the Society around “a
strong individual.”

NSCIA, , condemns New Zealand
terrorist attacks
THE Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has
condemned last Friday’s attack by a Christian terrorist and
Australian citizen, Brenton Tarrant, on two mosques in Christchurch,
New Zealand, describing it as dastardly.
The attacks were carried out as Muslims converged for the Friday
worship in a gruesome manner.
In a statement signed by the Council’s Deputy Secretary General,
Prof. Salisu Shehu, the NSCIA regretted that, “while many rightthinking
people and governments across the world have expressed
outrage at such a heinous crime and mass murder of various
nationalities, there are those whose hearts are blotted by hatred and
bigotry to the extent that every crime against Muslims is welcome.”
A typical example, according to the statement, is the Australian
Senator Fraser Anning who still blamed Muslims for being attacked!
“The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) under
the leadership of its President-General, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji
Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, strongly condemns this brazen act of
terrorism on the defenseless Muslim worshippers in Christchurch.
The Council also totally condemns the enabling environment created
by racists, supremacists and left-wing extremists that allows
Islamophobia to fester all over the world.
“In all those attacks and others, the religious identities of the
perpetrators have always been downplayed because they were
Christians. But if a criminal who happens to bear a Muslim name is
involved in a crime, his religion would be dragged into it. It is such
double standards and other injustices that serve as enablers of the
current state of the world where victims are conveniently branded
aggressors and mass murderers are labeled gunmen,” the statement
lamented. While appealing to Muslims in Nigeria and the world to
remain patient and prayerful in the face of all attacks and provocations,
the Council commends the New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda
Arden, for calling the attack what it was, “a terrorist attack”, and for
the efforts being made by her and her government to engage the Muslim
community in this sorrowful period.
“Our prayer is that Allah admits the martyred Muslims to Aljannah
Firdaos, give their families the fortitude to bear the irrecoverable
losses, grant the injured quick recovery and protect His own people
all over the world from the devilish plots of their enemies,” the
statement concluded.

THE leadership of Nasrul Lahil Fatih Society NASFAT also
condemned the attack.
According to a statement signed by it Public Affairs Secretary, Alhaji
Banju Busari, the group described
the attack as heartless and
inhuman.
The terrorist act was heartless,
inhuman and devastating to
Muslims worldwide, heinously
carried out when Muslims,
young, old, women, men and
their kids were waiting for jumaat
service.
“This dastardly act has
confirmed the position of
NASFAT that terrorism should
not be given colouration in terms
of religion, race or creed.
There should be a consensus
that terrorism is a global social
challenge and it will remain unfair
and unjust to blame it on any
particular religion or faith.
“We feel so anguished that at a
time when global peace efforts are
gaining ascendancy across
boundaries and our hope that
finally terrorism is on the decline,
now the killings at Christchurch
mosque has proved to be a big
setback. NASFAT however,
called on nations and world
communities to regard terrorists
as agents of death and should be
treated with appropriate
punishment within the confines
of the law. It also stated that
concerted efforts must be made
to address with urgency, critical
issues that promote terrorism
under the guise of xenophobia or
religion or other factors.
