At the 'Cottage Inn' the other night a bunch of us
surrendered ourselves to the gentle and peaceful swamp
that Kent Duchaine takes with him on his wide- ranging
musical journeys.
An excellent and unusual guitarist with a repertoire that is
mainly Delta style blues he proudly projects his Deep South
origins by way of his many anecdotes centred around his
native Georgia. Tales of a swampy, lake studded landscape
full of 'gators, 'skeeters, snakes and hummers (Hummingbirds).
These are all delivered in a soft Southern drawl that lulls his audience into a
relaxed mood that was enhanced by the fabulous 'Fat Belly' ales that genial host Gary
provides.
But there was no chance of getting bogged down thanks to Kent's dynamic style and
musical excellence. A lean and wiry figure with the build of a long- distance- runner he
hops around in a lithe and youthful manner that appears to belie the maturity that his
countenance would suggest. Perhaps I am wrong. Maybe he is only 30 years old. If so,
he must have had an enjoyable and enviable lifestyle.
Being his second visit to our soggy shores everyone knew what to expect but were still
moved by his great act. He plays all over the world and is getting really good reviews
wherever he goes. We are lucky to have him as a regular act. Thanks, Gary for another
memorable night of top- class entertainment in lovely surroundings.
Gary tells me that plans for his annual beer and music festival are progressing well.
Accommodation businesses nearby are reporting good bookings from visitors who
were here last year and are keen to repeat the experience of a fantastic festival in
safe, comfortable surroundings in what is surely one of the most beautiful venues
going. Gary plans to stage the festival on the weekend of June 14, 15 and 16. So
cancel that camping trip to the Queen's Balmoral Estate: It always rains there anyway.
