A driver had a miraculous escape when his car breached the bank just
above Ninneywell on Countisbury Hill early on Saturday morning, 9 th March falling
about 1,000 feet and ending up on the rocky beach at Sillery Sands. The driver
managed to get out of his vehicle and walked to a nearby holiday apartment to get
help. He was lucky to survive as the damage to his vehicle was extensive.
Lynmouth Coastguard Search and Rescue backed up by Ilfracombe Coastguard,
Lynton Fire, Barnstaple Fire SRT and Police and Ambulance Services were called and
the driver was transferred to hospital firstly by ambulance then air ambulance. Cliff
technicians were deployed to the beach at the request of the Police to make sure
there were no other casualties. The A39 was closed during the emergency services
operation.
A great example of joint services working together and we are fortunate to have these
people in the area. Well done to everyone involved !
