First-Time Mom? PACE Yourself!
Because the JCCGW is dedicated to supporting young
families, the Bender-Dosik Parenting Center has
formed a partnership with PACE (Parent and
Community Education), a nonprofit organization that
provides educational and emotional support groups for
sharing experiences and knowledge to promote family
well-being. PACE believes that there is no one way to
raise a child, and encourages each family to develop
its own parenting style based upon its own value
system. PACE empowers new parents to find their
own voice.
PACE was founded in 1973 in the Washington,
DC area by two mental health professionals
after the birth of their first children. Both
of the women were new to the DC area
and lacked the local family support
they grew up with in their home
towns.

PACE groups meet at the JCCGW to discuss topics such
as eating, sleeping, crying, attachment, disposition
and play. Time is also set aside for members to share
experiences, ask questions and raise concerns. The
combination of educational and emotional support
works so well that most PACE groups continue to
meet on their own after the eight sessions.
Groups are led by professionals trained in
the fields of infant and parent development,
family relationships and group dynamics,
and who are also “seasoned” moms.
New PACE groups form on an ongoing basis
at the JCCGW; a class is planned to start
