New Membership Referral Program Introduced
Shriners International has introduced the I AM RU
program, a membership recruitment program with
a new focus, new tools and detailed plans which
is meant to bring in 12,000 new creations by the
2018 Imperial Session. The overall success of this
program depends on the commitment of individual
Shriners to “Share Your Shrine” with friends, and
on temples to meet/exceed their best number
of creations in the last five years – if every noble
and every temple does these things, we will be
very close to achieving that goal of 12,000 new
members. The new program will capitalize on the
increasing awareness of Shriners International,
and on new technology in WebFez that provides
improved information regarding the progress and
status of new member prospects, so that we can
offer timely help and encouragement as they work
through the process.
Using Technology for Membership Recruitment
The I AM RU program is a new approach to
membership development that incorporates a
referral program linked to WebFez that allows
current nobles to directly refer names of friends,
family members and acquaintances they feel would
make good Shriners. The prospective member is
linked with his referring noble, promoting natural
mentorship based on an existing friendship or
acquaintance. The new process can be tracked
and reported, and each referral triggers automatic
communications to the referring noble and the
prospect. Once a noble makes a referral, he
receives tools and resources to mentor his prospect
and hopefully lead him to creation. The program
encourages constant collaboration, so that every
noble can share their fraternity with the good men
around them.
Attracting Interest through Well-planned
Social Events
An important element of the new program is that
it encourages temples to host fellowship parties
and rush events to promote interest and attract
membership prospects, and provides guidance
that helps ensure success. For example, fellowship
parties should be in a relaxed environment and have
an open table/social concept, with no formalized
membership presentation. These events should be
open to prospective members, without pressure
for membership recruitment or restoration; and
membership literature should be available
upon request.
Rush events have an open house, social and
educational aspects, and are open to prospective
members and their families. A multi-faceted
presentation providing information on Shriners
International, including temple clubs and units,
as well as information on Masonry and affiliated
organizations, is encouraged at these events.
Membership literature should also be provided to
all attendees.
Our goal for each Imperial Year is less
suspensions, less demits and more affiliations.
The leadership of Shriners International has added
the ambitious goal of 12,000 new creations from
Session to Session. This goal is attainable if temples
focus on matching and surpassing their own best
number of creations in the last five years.
There are many resources available to help us
reach our membership goals. Using the new WebFez
referral system is the perfect place to start, and
beashrinernow.com is still a great resource. There
are also several helpful tools on Shriners Village,
including the Membership Toolkit, Roadmap to
Membership Success, and Marketing Materials
Ordering System. We encourage temples and nobles
to work with their Regional Membership Director
and the Office of Membership Development, and to
send your temple membership team to the annual
Membership Seminar for invaluable tips
and information.
The Potentate’s Message
Es Selamu Aleikum
Greetings Illustrious Sirs and Nobles,
Nobles, Ladies and Friends:
I would like to start this message with a heartfelt thank you to everyone that took
time out of their busy schedules to work at the Rajah Shrine Circus. I have been
preaching that we need “Teamwork” for the success of the Shrine and that teamwork
was evident at this year’s circus. We had adults of all ages, children and grandchildren
who worked to make this year a success. The clubs and units that work the concessions
at the circus are greatly appreciated. We added a new event this year with the Johnny
Rockett Look-a-like contest, which was well received. I would be remiss if I didn’t
thank Choo Choo Jake for going above and beyond the call of duty. He transformed
your Potentate into an older version of Johnny Rockett. It was a blast and was a hit
with the members and the crowd.
April 29th is the Good Friday breakfast at the complex. Please contact the office if
you are planning to attend so enough food is ordered.
The Potentate’s trip is coming up April 26th to April 29th, stopping at Mt. Vernon, Williamsburg, and
Monticello. Contact Boscov’s travel and join the caravan to Virginia and back.
How to Build Unity Within the Unit or Club
Clearly, building meaningful relationships in your club or unit can have a positive impact on personal
satisfaction and, as a result, success to the unit.
On average, I would say our nobles spend about 20 hours a month performing duties for the club
or unit. Officers spend even more time. So, it’s important to like what you do and who you work with.
Accordingly, our noble volunteers who identify co-volunteers as friends (or even best friends) are seven
times more likely to be engaged in their tasks. They are more likely to be satisfied and productive.
Fortunately, building club unity just takes a little work…here is a formula to driving a successful unit.
Step 1) Clearly Define Goals. “Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision.” It is
important that every member of the unit knows and understands the goals. Without a clearly-defined finish line and plan to reach
that finish line, everyone will ultimately run in different directions.
Step 2) Clearly Define Roles. “Too many cooks spoil the broth.” This is just as true in the club or unit. Without clearly defined
roles, productivity comes to a standstill. Too many leaders – too many voices – slows progress, leads to missed opportunities and
unproductive behaviors, errors, and ultimately failures.
Step 3) Establish Trust. “To be trusted is a greater compliment than being loved.” Trust is essential to an effective relationship
and an effective team. We must trust our co-workers, our teammates. We must trust that they will do their jobs. We must trust that
they will pull their own weight and add value to the unit. But building trust is not always easy. “Learning to trust is one of life’s most
difficult tasks.” Trust must be earned, and this can take some time.
Step 4) Encourage Open Communication. The ability to communicate clearly is critical, and yet it is something that many units
take for granted. Keep in mind that blaming a lack of collaboration is just another way to escape unity and the unit fails. The general
consensus of the club officers is that effective communication skills are more important now than ever before for the club’s success.”
Step 5) Practice. Teamwork – unity – takes practice. And, sometimes, it is best to step outside of the clubs to improve productivity.
Visit other clubs and witness their dynamics. Stop, think, communicate, adjust your plan of action on the fly, and ultimately fail once
or twice before succeeding. Practice makes perfect. Continue to have fun.
Come see our club unity at the Annual Pops Concert on Sunday, May 5th, 4 p.m. at the Rajah Complex Banquet Hall. Reserved
tickets are available from any bandsmen.
PROVOST GUARD
What a week it was!! Although the
weather was a bit cold and windy for the
Wednesday and Thursday nights of the
Rajah Circus, Friday was a bit milder
with a light snow, but Saturday was bright
and sunny, although Sunday was a bit
damp and dreary. Overall the weather
cooperated and we saw thousands of
happy circus goers enjoying themselves
at the 57th Annual Rajah Shrine Circus.
Your Provost Guard Parking Crew was on the ball and everything
went extremely well by getting all our visitors in and out of the
parking area without any incidents. It was a bit touchy for a couple
of the shows, but overall, we could say that a good time was had
by all.
Our Potentate, Illustrious Sir Mike Zerbe and the entire circus
committee, led by Circus Chairman Illustrious Sir Ron Klee, PP,
did a splendid job in bringing all the elements together to make this once again a
great time for our members and visitors.
The Great Rajah Shrine Circus has come and gone. Once again, our Shrine had
helped to offset the cost of our circus
T-shirts which allowed that stand to
have record profit. I know several of
the other stands also have club or unit support and that is what
makes our circus a great event.
I am sure we all are looking forward to the warmer days of
spring and summer. Our club is holding a Steak Night in June.
More info to follow.
We are also having a fund raiser and tickets are being
prepared. The winner gets a $1000 Dinner at Stokesay Castle.
Tickets are $20 each and the winner gets to take a party of 10
people out to dinner and spend up to $1000 or a cash prize of
$500. This was very popular fund raiser a few years back, so we
are running it again. Buy a ticket and GOOD LUCK.
John Grumbein
ORIENTAL BAND
Wow! What a whirlwind couple of months for
the Oriental Band.
At a time of year when most are staying snug
and warm at home, the Band has been extra busy.
The month of February started with the annual
Motor Corps / Oriental Band Night at the Races.
The banquet hall at the Complex was full of horse
race enthusiasts ready to wager. Noble Dennis
Guignet’s Lady Karen and her kitchen crew made
sure that no one left hungry. Noble Ted Werkheiser
and his ticket sellers did a fantastic job with selling
50/50 chances, among other things. Noble Wayne
Grumbein’s Lady Julie and Noble Steve Clay kept the ladies busy at the para-mutual windows with updates on the odds for the races.
Last but not least, what more can be said for our master of ceremonies for the evening, Illustrious Sir P.P. Bob Shank. He’s the one that
keeps things moving along smoothly for the entire program. These are just a few of the people that help to make this possible. This is
certainly a big team effort of approximately 40 Nobles and their ladies from both units working together to help to provide things needed
for Rajah Shrine. Our latest project was an enclosed utility trailer for the Shrine to haul things back and forth from the Circus, Pote’s
Picnic, Sportsman’s Raffle, etc.
The next weekend was the annual Motor Corps / Oriental Band Member Appreciation dinner held at the Complex. This is our way
of thanking our members for all their help throughout the year be it parades, circus, horse races, etc. Thank you again for all your help!
The last weekend of the year always brings with it the Oriental Band Ladies Night. We hold this in conjunction with the Mid
Atlantic Shrine Oriental Band Association mid-winter meeting. This is always a terrific weekend. The Ladies of the Band again outdid
themselves with food for the hospitality room and Noble Ted Werkheiser worked his magic behind the bar. At our dinner on Saturday
evening, we were honored to have the president
of the Association of Oriental Bands, Noble Harry
Dennis Hagan ,
Adjutant
LEGION OF HONOR
Pressman and his Lady Joni from Houston, Texas,
in attendance. Noble Pressman gave a short talk on
the Ladder of Smiles, the Oriental Band’s way of
donating to the hospital, and asked if anyone had a
donation. At the end of it all, close to $5,000 was
collected to support our philanthropy. We were also
honored to have Illustrious Sir Mike Zerbe and Lady
Susie along with 36 members of the Official Family
and their ladies in attendance with us. Rajah certainly
supports their units. Illustrious Sir Mike presented
Noble Dennis Guignet with a 5-year service award.
Time flies, doesn’t it Dennis? Congratulations.
We didn’t rest long until it was time to load
that brand-new trailer the Horse Races purchased
with novelties, snow cone machines, cotton candy
machines and who knows what. Yep, it was that time
of year again. Circus!!!!!! The Band again did their
part by inventorying and distributing novelties to the
sellers at the stands. Sales must have gone well as we
came home with a lot less than what we started with.
Thank you to all the Nobles and their ladies from all
the units who came out to support the Circus. Well
done! The only thing on the down side is after eight
shows, it takes at least 2 months to get the songs out
of your head. I guess that’s the price we must pay.
Now with the month of March halfway through
we can get some rest. Uh- oh. Pote’s Ball coming up
April 6. Here we go again. Hope to see you all there.
Please remember our kids in the hospitals.

Susie in her garden planting milkweed
LADY SUSIE’S ONGOING
MISSION TO SAVE THE
MONARCHS
“I’m still fascinated that these beautiful fragile creatures possess the knowledge
to fly all the way to Mexico and locate an area less than 100 miles in diameter.”
Just how they do that is still a mystery. But the help they get along the way while
passing through this part of Pennsylvania is not a mystery, because Lady Susie
Zerbe has been providing a waystation for Monarchs for over twelve years.
In fact, her garden is a certified Monarch Waystation, a certified Wildlife
Habitat, and a certified Pollinator Friendly garden.
Susie became interested in the colorful creatures when she found some
caterpillars on a milkweed plant she had recently planted in her garden. When she
checked on them the next day they were gone. Probably the victims of predators
she thought. It’s said that less than one in one hundred Monarchs survive from
caterpillar to mature butterfly. With her interest piqued, Susie did a little research,
got an understanding of the life cycle of the Monarch, and decided to start tending
to them on an organized basis.
She started a terrarium outside
at first, then moved on to providing rearing tents. She
now has six tents that protect the caterpillars from the
elements and predators. The monarch has been in
decline for at least the last decade. The destruction of
their natural habitat, widespread use of insecticides
to control insects and weeds, and climate change are
just a few of the reasons.
Susie’s individual goal is to try and increase
the Monarch population by providing food and
host plants for the monarch and for other types of
butterflies. Her garden is the center of her efforts. “It
all comes together in the garden” she says, “and if there is one thing that people
can do to increase the butterfly population it would be to plant milkweed and
other host plants. They are attracted to types of plants that not only provide
nectar, like Butterfly plants, but also plants where they can lay their eggs, are
essential to their survival.” In the Monarch’s case it would be milkweed but
plants like violets and many herbs are also used by other types of butterflies as
host plants. Some plants that the monarchs and other species of butterflies love
are not native to the area. She has planted Mexican Sunflowers and Tatarian
Aster for instance that she says are sometimes covered by the butterflies and
pollinators, such as bees. “Again, it all goes back to the garden as the key to
successfully raising these marvelous creatures.”
A Monarch is released
The payoff for a year’s worth of butterfly tending is when the monarchs are
released in August and September. Last year she released over 600 to begin their
long journey to Mexico. The migration takes them 2,500 hundred miles to the
Oyamel Fir Forests just west of Mexico City. They’ll hibernate there until spring
then begin the journey back north.
Susie noted that “it’s very rewarding and a great feeling to see them off…and
kind of sad too knowing what they will be facing in the journey south.” But she
looks forward to starting the process all over again in the winter. She feels that
even though the problems facing monarch butterflies are serious, individuals can
still have a positive impact. Her success is proof.
we know that great food and fellowship await us on the first
Monday of the month. Come join us.
STRING BAND
Greetings from your Rajah String Band. Hope everyone had a healthy and safe winter. We are looking
forward to spring and a new parade season.
Playing on Saturday afternoon (March 9th at 2:00) at the Circus is always a highlight and kicks off the
new season after a short winter break. Our first parade is the St Patrick’s Parade at Girardville. It is always a
fun parade, but usually very cold.
There was a lot of discussion at the last meeting about teamwork and how we can grow as a fraternity and
attract new members for our band.
Some of the ideas are:
*Attend your Blue Lodge and ask your Worshipful Master to be put on the agenda. Give an update of
Larry Christman what we are doing each month.
*Playing on the float throughout the parade season creates much awareness to the public. Our float is
well recognized at each parade. It lets the public know that our mission is to support the Shriners Hospitals.
*As musicians, tell people about our String Band...who we are, what we do, and that we support the hospitals.
*There was a lot of discussion about social media and how it can help us. We can create a website and/or Facebook page. The
younger people use social media to find new events, organizations/groups activities.
*We want to do some local print advertising, i.e....newspapers, flyers, the Merchandizer. Print up business cards...we all have room
in our instrument cases and wallets to keep String Band business cards with our website and contact phone numbers. Hand them out
when speaking to perspective members or if you hear of new parades to add to our schedule. We need to keep up with technology to
stay relevant.
Thanks to Kermit and Tom for putting together the new parade books. Much time went into arranging the new music and new
folders. We will no longer yell out numbers and will be overall more professional musicians.
Congratulations to all the newly installed officers. Hope you have a very successful year. Looking forward to our snowbirds
returning. We miss you!
As always, there is an open-door invitation for musicians
to play in the String Band. If you play an instrument come
out to a rehearsal on the second Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the
Complex.
With the support of our Ladies, our purpose is that we
might play our instruments so that someday a physically
challenged child may walk and play again.
See you at the Parades!
Ill. Sir Dave
MOTOR
CORP
Greetings Nobles,
The Motor Corps had a very
successful Horse Race event with
the Rajah Shrine Oriental Band.
A very special thanks to all the
Nobles and their Ladies from both
Units for making the evening run
so smoothly. A great time was
had by all, and the ponies have been
put up for the winter after a hard
day of racing. Again a big thanks to
John Grumbein and Bill Trusty, and their respective Units.
A wonderful example of Units working together for the
betterment of all!.
ANGLERS
Tired of watching the sporting channels
and seeing how easy it is to catch all species
of fish? Well I have been trying some
of those tips and I would not be a good
candidate for the various fishing shows. It’s
still relaxing and better than being at work,
although most of us are retired. Hopefully
Dick Snell this year the bite won’t be as late as last year
and we can all get out and enjoy the sport. By
the way, at least up north, they are declaring open season on all lying
groundhogs. One has a high bounty if you are fortunate enough to
bag him.
Hopefully, the circus was a success for all of you who put in many
hours that weekend. Our club has some great people without whom
the majority of the work would not get done. The club will be the
big loser when they can no longer serve. Speaking of members, the
membership committee has set a goal for all units and clubs to try
and get 11 new members. It’s a great goal that would even be better
if all new members came from newly inducted Shriners.
While this is a little dead time for us, stay alert for future magazine
articles as to some new ideas floating around to increase interest
in the club. When we finalize the plans, we’ll share with you any
new events on the calendar. Before you know it, we will be making
sauerkraut and enjoying the fishing experiences you so much look
forward to during the long winter months. Remember to have fun as
we share or goal “hooked on helping kids.” See you on the water!!
NOBLE RIDERS
Nobles, congratulations to our Circus
committee and all of the volunteers that
make this happen.
The Noble Riders were excited to
participate in this year’s event, helping where
we could.
I’m writing this in March as I look out
the window at the sunshine and watching the
temperature rise. Although our official riding
season starts in April, we are always ready
to take action on short notice for our March
meeting if the weather presents a pleasant day.
Fingers crossed.
HOLD THE DATE - Saturday, August 3rd! That’s right, the first
Saturday in August. We are busy using the off season getting ready
for our upcoming 2019 riding season including planning for our 4th
Annual Poker Run on August 3rd. Please remember, even if you don’t
ride, consider coming out for the fellowship and to raise money for a great cause, our kids.
Of course, the other big date for us Noble Riders is the last Sunday of July - July 28th this year. Although it is not our ride, we get
together and go to Philadelphia to ride in the Centurions Annual Christmas in July to raise funds directly for the Shriners Hospitals
for Children - Philadelphia. You will see more from us on that as we get closer.
As usual, you will see us throughout the year at a multitude of events in support of our other Units and Clubs such the Car Club’s
annual car show in July.
As always, keep up with all our events by liking our Facebook page. These range from one day, two day and weeklong events
throughout the year. We welcome any of our Rajah Nobles on/in any vehicle to join in the fun with us. Know a Brother who rides
and would like to join in for a ride or two? Invite them along. Whether supporting events locally or afar, we are always up to the task
of promoting membership and fundraising to support the children.
Please remember, if you know any Nobles or any Brothers
who ride, let them know of us as we are always looking for
new members. For any questions or membership applications,
please contact Noble President Jeremy Smith - iamlunchbox@
Illustrious Sir Mike Zerbe was everywhere, lending
support and having a great deal of fun in the process.
The club held their first Membership Drive on March
16 at the Palmer Mall in Easton.
The event was a cooperative effort between the Tin Lizzies and Whitfield Lodge No 622. This effort was the idea of our president
Dean Mathews in response to the new membership initiative by Shrine International and the Rajah Membership committee.
The parade season is underway and the Tin Lizzies participated in the Girardville Parade on March 30. Annville, Bernville and
Malvern are scheduled in the spring. These are just a few of the 25 or so parades we will participate in this year.
THE CHAPLAIN’S
STUDY
This is the church season called Lent. We take
this time to prepare ourselves for the coming
events of the Passion of the Christ and his glorious
resurrection.
Today these things seem to matter to our
society less and less. We seem more and more
obsessed with money, wealth, success, and our
possessions. This is the deadly sin of our era. We
have grown to be a self-satisfying society. We care
for ourselves and our creature comforts first. All
Lent should be a time for taking a close look at ourselves on a spiritual
level. That means we must consider what we believe and how we act on
our beliefs. That is what this time is for, an evaluation. Looking deeply into
our hearts, we need to find those moments of our lives we can remember
when life was simple, a time when we believed in God so clearly and truly.
Recalling those times will restore to us the simplicity of our faith.
This does not happen easily nor quickly. It is a matter of our taking
some special time investment to bring ourselves to this understanding and
remembrance. We do this by reading scripture and participating in worship
that helps us to renew our relationship with our God. It is the renewal of
our faith that is essential.
Let us now take this special time of Lent to return to God and his word.
Let us prepare ourselves for the Passion of Jesus Christ our Lord.
