The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac
The Dharma Bums is a 1958 novel by Beat Generation author
Jack Kerouac. The basis for the novel’s semi-fictional accounts
are events occurring years after the events of On the Road. The
main characters are the narrator Ray Smith, based on Kerouac,
and Japhy Ryder, based on the poet and essayist Gary Snyder,
who was instrumental in Kerouac’s introduction to Buddhism in the
mid-1950s.
The book concerns duality in Kerouac’s life and ideals, examining
the relationship of the outdoors, mountaineering, hiking, and
hitchhiking through the west US with his “city life” of jazz clubs,
poetry readings, and drunken parties. The protagonist’s search for
a “Buddhist” context to his experiences (and those of others he
encounters) recurs throughout the story. The book had a significant
influence on the Hippie counterculture of the 1960s.
April Showers to Spring Flowers
by: Nancy Nicholls
EDENTON, NC – Gearing up for what promises to be a
weekend of wonderful activities inside and out, Historic
Edenton is making sure not only that the sun will shine
but also that the many gardens will be aglow with colorful
blooms as the 2019 Pilgrimage Tour of Homes takes
place on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13th from
10 am – 4 pm each day. The two days have so many
events on the calendar, visitors may just want to block off
the entire weekend so they can thoroughly enjoy.
You can begin the weekend on Friday at 9:30 am with the
Edenton Tea Party Re-enactment bringing back Penelope
Barker and the 51 Women that told the King NO. This
will take place on the Penelope Barker House Welcome
Center Old Colonial Wharf. On the tour itself, there will
be over 15 Private Homes, 11 Historic Sites all open for
touring as well as the Creating A Masterpiece, “Textile
Through Time” exhibit on display at the 1767 Chowan
County Courthouse. The Edenton Woman’s Club
presents this event – tickets are $30 in advance and $35
days of, students are $10 and group tickets (10 or more)
$25 and can be purchased by calling Historic Edenton
State Historic Site @ 252-482-2637.
Destination Downtown Edenton invites you to join them
for Boogie on Broad, a family-friendly street dance on
Friday evening from 7 -10 pm with THE TAMS as the
featured band. In celebration of NC Beer Month, NC
Craft Beers will also be on tap and this event is free and
open to the public.
Enjoy Fresh Air & Keep Dirty Sock Syndrome Away
by Tina Cannon, with Laura Bush Jenkins
When Edenton resident Keith Stevens strangely continued
coughing for a couple of months, he and his
wife were concerned. Sure enough, mold entered their
home after a heavy rain.
Through a mutual friend, Keith connected with mold
remediator Harry Cannon of Dwelling Management
Solutions. DMS fogged his entire house- including the
crawlspace, attic, and HVAC ducts.
“My wife and I noticed significant improvements and a
more pure air,” Keith said.
“He was proactive,” Stevens noted, “and [since arranging
subsequent treatments] I have a high level of confidence.
You have a partner, not just a short-term service provider.”
Recently, Cannon and his team shared their expertise
with another couple, the Feltons, in Camden. Sharon
Felton contacted Andy Fox and Wavy News 10 after
reporting about 5 years of problems with a foul smell
resembling dirty socks in her home.
To capture all that is truly NC, the weekend will not be
complete without celebrating the 200th Anniversary of
President James Monroe’s 1819 visit to Edenton on
Saturday, April 13th from 7 – 11 pm on the 1767 Chowan
County Courthouse Green. James Monroe in-character
performer * Formal or Historic Attire * Dinner * Historic
Dancing are all part of this one-of-a-kind evening. Tickets
are $100 per person or $90 with a Pilgrimage Tour
Ticket and can be purchased by calling Historic Edenton
State Historic Site, Visitor Center 252-482-2637.
We look forward to having you join us for an exceptional
weekend where you can experience not only what Historic
Edenton offers today but also what the 1st Colonial
Capital of NC offered in its early days as well. For more
information on upcoming events:
VisitEdenton.com
This is not directly related to any one manufacturer or
dealer but is industry-related.
A homeowner or business could become so familiar with
Dirty Sock Syndrome they might not notice until leaving
and encountering an offensive smell and other issues.
Most of the mold and bacteria that accumulates is not
detrimental unless you have a compromised immune
system, asthma, or allergies. However, you could experience
symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, running
eyes and nose, etc.
You don’t have to spend big bucks replacing your HVAC
coil- sometimes annually- which costs upwards of $1,200
per coil. We have a simple process using proprietary,
EPA-approved chemicals to kill impurities and improve
your air quality.
“We’ve found if we don’t pay attention to the HVAC
system, then the contaminated air can continuously be
recirculated,” Cannon noted while on the scene.
Known as Dirty Sock Syndrome, this condition is the
result of mold, bacteria, dust, dead rodents, and other
particulates that build upon your air conditioning coil.
Last month I shared that I was the Supervisory Food
Technologist/Senior Staff member, in the USDA/FSIS/
SLD ( Standards & Labeling Division).
In layman terms that’s a bureaucrat. The SLD had huge
influence on the application of the USDA ‘s “Standard of
Identity”, policy for all meat and poultry products manufactured
in the United States and the import and and
export markets. My work units job was to review the
mandatory labeling material supported by formulas and
processing procedures. The labeling material would be
submitted by industry representatives or lobbyist expediting
for their industry clients.
Today we’ll be looking at substances used in the dairy
industry that are detrimental to your health and
why they’re in your food. There’s been numerous
reports about the herbicide “Glyphosate/Roundup”, and
how it’s been found in grain products such as breakfast
cereals, and beer. But glyphosate contamination goes
far beyond that. Much of the grains grown in Northeast
North Carolina are used to feed live stock including dairy
cows. When cows no longer lactate they are slaughtered
for their meat. Most of their meat will be further
processed for the domestic market because of additive
limitations.
Dairy consumption means you are ingesting additives
such as: glyphosate, rBGH (synthetic growth hormone),
antibiotics. In 2010 the Obama administration raised
glyphosate residual levels at Monsanto’s request.
Health and Nutrition Strategies For
Cancer Survivors and Everybody Else
Warren Green is a 30 year member of the Institute of Food
Technology, A HAACP (hazard analysis critical control point)
Instructor with a Bachelors degree in Nutrition Science.
WHAT’S IN YOUR DIET?
Warren Green can be reached
at warreng9241@hotmail.com
So, let’s connect the dots Over the years I’ve been a
strong outspoken advocate for prostate cancer survivors
in Northeast North Carolina. For three years I facilitated
an American Cancer Society (ACS) program called “Man
to Man”. While serving in that capacity I analyzed data
from the North Carolina Central Cancer Registry, the
North Carolina Office of Minority Health & Health Disparities,
and of course the ACS. My research determined
that AA men in Northeast North Carolina, has some of
the highest prostate cancer incidents in the world. And,
very limited treatment options.
Local leaders should consider this a clarion call for
action. Law practices are lining up to handle pesticide
and herbicide claims. Our AA citizens are the proverbial
“canary in the coal mine”.
Certified Organic Soil Testing should be a priority.
To summarize, I’ll state this as a food safety expert. Our
national food chain is polluted and our region’s agriculture
products are major contributors. It’s political and you
know what to do.
Have you ever wondered?
It seems as though politicians go to the
legislature and get marching orders on
how to vote from their political parties.
Then come back and sell the vote to
their constituents. If you don’t buy what
is being sold, the politician gets angry.
Whatever happened to politicians
finding out how their constituents want
them to vote and go to the legislature
to represent the citizens of their district?
Are we represented, or managed? Just
wondering.......
Salad Bar by the Yard by: Coy Domecq
These days, microgreens are all the rage in fine
dining establishments. The botanical selections
are carefully cultivated and harvested at their peaks of
microgreen development between the sprout and fully
mature stage. Certainly, those of us with refined palettes
can discern the quality and benefit of consuming
the latest and greatest in the world of microgreens.
That is all well and good I am sure, but allow me to
introduce you to the microgreen cousins on the other
side of the tracks. This selection enjoys less renown as
their more well-known family connections but provide
every bit as much panache as those restaurant dwellers.
Just step outside of your door, front, side or back
will do, and encounter all those waiting to make your
acquaintance. You are likely to encounter succulent
clover, tender dandelion, piquant wood sorrel and if you
are fortunate, maybe some tasty chickweed. This is
just a smattering of the yard fare you could find. These
salad ingredients have all of the fiber and nutritional
value as that stuff covered in plastic wrap lounging
in the produce section of your local market. Did I say
“salad ingredients”? It’s true, but these ingredients can
also be used as garnish, sandwich dressings, pizza
toppings, soups and pesto combinations. You don’t
have to be wealthy to live like you are uptown.
The keys to this method of acquiring local microgreen
nirvana is to know the absolute identity of that which
you harvest and confirm that the collecting area is
free of pesticides or herbicides. Preferably collect in
the mornings, select the youngest specimens, rinse
thoroughly and finally, eat sparingly at first if new to this
form of yard harvest to minimize any potential allergic
reactions or untoward digestive effects.
Bon appetit, ya’ll.
JIM KAIGHN INSURANCE AGENCY- HOME OF THE “INSURANCE DOCTOR”
by Jim KAIGHN, CLU,CHFC,RHU,AABA, BSBA,LUTCF
LEARNING AUTO INSURANCE TERMINOLOGY, PART ONE--LIABILITY SECTION
Last month, I finished up with the terminology on LIFE INSURANCE..
This month is on AUTO INSURANCE and some do’s and don”ts..
The reason folks need auto insurance is that is is mandated upon
us by the Commissioner of Insurance in any state that you live in..
mainly for two reasons::if you are buying a vehicle and have it financed
through a bank, the bank wants to make sure that if you are in an
accident, and the vehicle needs a few bandages or a complete funeral,
that they can get their money back to repay the loan, since you probably
can”t do it on your own.. It just makes sense.. IT IS COLLATERAL!!
Next is the State you live in, wants to make sure that if yo are involved
in an accident and it is YOUR FAULT!! THERE IS MONEY to pay for
the damages done to people and/or property..This part of the insurance
contract is called LIABILITY section..This is broken down into
three areas.. IF YOU INJURE ONE PERSON, OR MORE THAN ONE
PERSON, OR DAMAGE TO PERSONAL PROPERTY..The State you
live in has minimum amounts that you must carry on these areas so ,at
least there is some money that can be paid to the injured party.. North
Carolina”s limits are $30,000 for one person injured, $60,000 for more
than one person injured and $25,000 for property damage.. ALERT,
ALERT, ALERT!!!!! this is where these cheap companies like GIECO,
PROGRESSIVE, DIRECT AND ELEPHANT and others get you.. they
get you to buy only the lowest amount of coverage for that state, so
your premium is lower.. IS THAT GREAT OR WHAT!!! NO, NO, NO!!
Guess who has to pay the balance if the injuries are higher than those
limits? YOU DO SUCKER!! They also get you to drop other benefits to
lower your price!! Now there is a provisional benefit that is there if you
Albemarle Master Gardeners Hold Spring Garden Show
T
he Ninth Annual Albemarle Master Gardeners’ Spring
Garden Show, “A World of Gardening”, will be held
on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at the Perquimans County
Recreational Center, 310 Granby Street, Hertford, from
9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. This event is organized by the
Master Gardeners in Perquimans, Chowan and Gates
Counties.
This annual fundraising event is held to support the
master gardeners’ scholarship fund, The Katherine G.
Shook Master Gardener Scholarship. The sale will
feature plants sales, gardening items plus locally made
crafts from a variety of vendors, a children’s corner, “Ask
a Master Gardener Booth”, homemade baked good,
educational speakers, a 50/50 raffle and more. Lunch,
provided by Brew2Rescue, will be available for purchase.
Admission is free.
This is the Master Gardeners only fundraiser for their
scholarship fund which is awarded each year to students
from Gates, Perquimans, or Chowan counties who are
pursuing a career in horticulture, agriculture, natural
resources, or a related field. The fund is named for Katy
Shook who has been the NC Cooperative Extension
Consumer Horticulture agent for Chowan, Gates and
Perquimans counties since 2003 and established the
area Extension Master Gardener program in 2005.
at https://perquimans.ces.ncsu.edu/springgardenshow
for additional information on vendors, exhibits and
speakers. This site includes directions to the event.
are injured by someone who has very bad coverage or no coverage
at all, this is called COMBINED UNINSURED AND UNDERINSURED
COVERAGE.. So, if that party injures you or your property, YOUR
OWN POLICY will kick in and pick up a large portion or all of the balance
of your bills..usually these limits are the same as the LIABILITY
BENEFITS you carry for your protection..The MINIMUM I PROPOSE
EVERYONE CARRY IS $100,000 for injury to one person, $300,000
for injury to more than one person and $50,000 for property damage!!
and funny.. these extra benefits cost VERY LITTLE MORE than the
cheapest coverage.. Folks, do not get RIPPED OFF!! Well, next month
I will finish up with the other parts of the auto coverage, so pull out
your policy and look up your benefits on the DECLARATIONS PAGE..
compare your limits WITH A SOLID COMPANY like, State Farm,
Allstate, Nationwide, Farm Bureau.. these companies and other well
known ones have the money to pay bills and claims.. If you would like
to contact me, you can at 252 335 5983 or my cell at 252 202 5983 or
my e-mail at “INSDR@ROADRUNNER.COM”.. So, always remember,
LAUGH AND SMILE!! Though of the month-”You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here..
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding
as it should”(Desiderata)
Dear Dr. Crime
Dr. Crime is a pseudonym for a social scientist holding
a Ph.D. degree in sociology and in criminology. He
has worked in all major parts of the criminal justice
system. Drop him a note at the website www.keepkidshome.net
If you or your child is in trouble, he
may be able to help, give him a call (2523390000) or
E-mail at
reedadams@yahoo.com
Dear Dr. Crime: I am sick of the crime around us.
Why does not our country really get tough and kick
some of the crooks and put them in prison more? Old
Victim
Dear Vic: I understand how you feel, and you are
right that a negative effect to a criminal act should
reduce the frequency of such acts in the future. However,
many things impact the crooks in addition to police/courts
actions. For one thing, it may take a very
long time and the crook may associate police action
with other matters rather than learning that crime is
followed by hurt. A recent report, “Mass Incarceration:
The Whole Pie 2019” argues we lock up more people
than any other nation. It reports the American criminal
justice system currently holds “1.3 million people
in state prisons; 612,000 people in local jails; 221,000
people in federal prisons and jails; 61,000 people
(including 11,800 children) in immigration detention;
and 46,000 people in juvenile justice facilities. In
addition to those locked up, another 3.6 million are on
probation and 840,000 are on parole.” We are not a
timid and soft county. What they report about North
Carolina is copied below.
Dear Dr. Crime: Do many adults hurt little kids? What I see
in the news makes me sick. Upset Mary
Dear Mary: Yes, some of it upsets me more than I can say,
at least in print. The National Child Abuse and Neglect Data
System reports that about 1,720 children died due to abuse
and neglect in 2017. About 7 ½ million kids were referred to
Child Protective Services that year. The effects on the kids
are long-lasting and are related to lower school achievement,
juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, and mental health
problems. Abuse is often not just physical beatings but other
kinds of harm. If you know of such a situation, report it to
your local Department of Social Services in your county.
Dear Dr. Crime: Our Christian church wants to offer programs
to help end the sexual traffic in girls. Where can we
go to find money to start helping? Pastor X
Dear Pastor: Give me a call and we will talk. However,
immediately go on the internet to the NoVo Foundation and
see their offer of $600,000 a year for 3 years for programs
that address commercial sexual exploitation of women and
girls. You must write a proposal and the deadline is very
soon. Call me.
Chowanoke History
by Duvonya Chavis
Pow-Wow comes from the Algonquin word “Pau-wau”,
which originally referred to a gathering of medicine men or
spiritual leaders for ceremonial curing. This meaning evolved
over time from a gathering for healing purposes to a gathering
or meeting of the tribal council. Today, Pow Wow is a cultural
gathering where American Indians come together to express
and celebrate their heritage. During this event, American Indians
reunite with family tribal members, members from other
tribes, and non-Indian community members to share their
culture and to dance, sing, listen to flute or various music,
camp, talk about their history, and enjoy food, cultural demonstrations,
and crafts.
While the Pow-Wow today is not ceremonial in the same
traditional manner that occurred pre-colonization, the dance
arena is blessed before the Pow-Wow begins. Once blessed,
this area is considered to be sacred and as such is given a
high level of respect. One can view this respect as analogous
to that which is given to the pulpit in our churches.
For those who have never been to a Pow-Wow, the cultural
richness gained from attending a good Pow-Wow is difficult
to pen and is something that must be experienced. Beaded
regalia and ribbon dress adorned with bold, rich colors and
designs are stunning and beautiful. Where food offering Indigenous
flavor is served, they must be sampled. In addition,
there is nothing that matches the soothing flavor of American
Indian flute music as it calms the soul and relaxes the body.
In this era of self-determination, Tribes and Native groups are
celebrating by having Pow-Wows and festivals more today
than they have since colonization.
The Chowanoke Nation is having their annual Pow-Wow on
Saturday, April 27, 2019 at the Ahoskie Recreational Complex
in Ahoskie, NC. The event will start with Grand Entry at
12:00pm.
The public is invited to attend and all are welcome.
Duvonya, a Chowanoke
descendant, is President of
Roanoke-Chowan Native
American Association, a
non-profit organization whose
mission is to help American
Indians in Northeastern NC
and Southeastern VA. In
partnership with another
Chowanoke descendant, she
is currently developing the
historic Chowanoke Reservation
in Gates County for
Tribal descendants to hold
cultural events.
The drum is central to the Pow-Wow. The singers usually sit
near the edge of the dance arena or under a drum arbor and
play songs that are the heartbeat of each ceremonial event.
Whether songs are sung to honor certain groups of people
and events or are sung for various dance styles, the drum
team is adept with knowing several different songs and when
to sing them.
Pregnancy Massage: Great for Mom and Baby
Human touch is, and most people enjoy it. Massage
during pregnancy can provide many benefits such
as:
Tranquil relaxation and reduce stress
Relieves neck, back, pelvic and leg pain
Reduces stress on weight-bearing joints
Increase in blood and lymph circulation, which can
reduce swelling
Relief from muscle cramps, spasms, and myocardial
pain, especially in the lower back, neck, hips, and legs.
The difference between “regular” massage and pregnancy
massage is that the person receiving the message
is pregnant and therefore knowledge of pregnancy
and the anatomy of the expectant mother is very important.
The body must be positioned and cushioned in a
way that protects and comforts the mother and the baby,
and there are also parts of the body that should never
receive message techniques
The massage table sets up so you will be in a semi-reclining
position — a comfortable place for you and also
safe for the baby. You will also turn from side to side for
your back and hips and continue to receive a soothing
massage; there the body pillows, wedge pillows, and extra
padding will be used to make you more comfortable.
Pregnancy massage typically completes after the first
trimester. On arrival, you will be asked to complete
an intake history form to see if pregnancy massage is
right for you. There may be certain conditions that may
or may not be related to the pregnancy that is a contraindication
to massage. If you are considered highrisk,
please consult your physician before considering
massage to obtain their professional opinion on your
condition.
Alisa Perry LMBT is a Registered Nurse who has experience
in Inpatient Obstetrics with 26 years of experience
The 6th Annual Biggs
Classic Golf Tournament
Major League Baseball has an extensive network of
minor leagues to develop future stars, whereas the
NBA and the NFL recruit from the college ranks. But the
PGA does not own minor league teams or recruit from
college teams. For a young golfer aspiring to play on
the PGA tour there are has few roads to the big time.
Tiger Woods made it to the PGA on the basis of a stellar
amateur career, but chances are a young pro golfer must
work his way up from a developmental tour to the Web.
com Tour, the PGA’s only “minor league.”
Arguably the best developmental golf tour in the country
is the GPro Tour that operates a full schedule of tournaments
from Virginia to Georgia, but mostly in North
Carolina. Of these, the one that has become the most
prestigious and the most popular is the Biggs Classic
played annually on Albemarle Plantation’s Sound Golf
Links in Hertford, NC.
The 6th Annual Biggs Classic Golf Tournament will be
played this year May 23-25, with tournament week beginning
on May 20 with a Pro-Am and several other contests.
The field of 144 golfers announced by GPro Tour is
the largest ever for this tournament. Sign-ups have been
pouring in since the schedule was announced, and for
several good reasons: the quality of the golf course, the
week-long activities, and the outstanding support of local
sponsors and the community.
Residents of Albemarle Plantation have established an
unrivaled reputation for hospitality and volunteerism.
by Claude Milot
Sponsored by Dwelling
Management Solutions
Local PGA pro Lee Duncan says it best: “Residents
welcome players into their homes and provide them a
comfy bed, a tasty meal, a friendly smile, and, if needed,
even a shoulder to cry on.” Over 150 of these residents
volunteer their services on and off the course and form
the tournament’s enthusiastic gallery, especially when
surrounding the 18th green at the end of the tournament.
Spectators can come by car or by boat. Admission is
MAJ. RAYMOND H. WILKINS ~ WWII HERO
Raymond Harrell Wilkins was born on September 28,
1917 and was the second son of William Samuel and
Florida Harrell Wilkins. Although he was born in Portsmouth,
Va., the family moved to Columbia, NC in September of
1921 where his grandparents lived. Raymond graduated
with honors from Columbia High School in 1934 and went
on to study pharmacy at the University of North Carolina.
His dream was to be in the army so he applied to West
Point. He passed the written exams with high grades but
could not pass the Academy’s strict physical demands. He
lost his appointment to West Point but didn’t give up on
his military dreams, he enlisted in the army and began his
soldier’s career as a buck private. He soon worked up a
couple of grades and shifted over to the Air Corps where
pilots were in great demand. Just before America entered
WWII, Raymond got his pilots wings and was promoted to
the rank of lieutenant. He requested to be sent overseas
and was sent to the Pacific Theater as a low level bomber
pilot. Known in the military as “Wilkie”, He was well respected
by his fellow pilots, and many regarded him as a
stickler for regulations. He soon began to win his reputation
for daring over assigned targets. In a raid over Gloucester,
New Britain, he led his squadron against two Jap destroyers
which lay in the harbor. These were his special assignment
and he went for them in the face of intense AA fire, dropping
his bombs with precision, scoring hits on both ships and
sinking one. Wilkie’s plane was riddled with bullet holes from
attacking Zeros, but managed to land safely and returned to
the harbor the next day to finish off the surviving destroyer.
By Jimmy Fleming mrflemz@embarqmail.com
He became Commanding Officer of his squadron, part of
the “Grim Reapers”, one of the most famous of the medium
bomber units. When he took over his post he told his men
“I will lead you on every mission” and he kept his word. He
had just one more mission to fly, a raid on Rabaul. He had
to keep his word and not let his men go on that one without
leading them. As usual he claimed the hottest position in the
formation for himself. Trouble started as soon as they got
over the target, the Japs had moved in new aircraft guns.
The entire defense setup in the harbor had been shifted,
and the original plans were useless. The sky was a ceiling
of exploding shells. Wilkie’s squadron behind the leading
planes was in the worse position and would take everything
the enemy had to offer. Wilkie roared in first, dropping his
bombs with precision on a 10,000 ton ship. He hit the target
dead on and the ship was ablaze and sinking. He circled
and came back to the far end of the harbor where small
ships were pouring out deadly anti-aircraft fire. Wilkie dove
on them with his gun blazing and drove the Jap gunners to
cover. In the middle of the harbor, a Jap destroyer was also
blazing away at the planes. Wilkie roared back, mast high
over the destroyer, strafing and releasing more bombs which
hit squarely amidships. As the bombing mission ended, the
planes began to make their way back to base. This was
quite an ordeal because at the mouth of the harbor, close
to where they had to fly, two Jap cruisers were sending up
a terrific barrage. Recognizing the peril, Wilkie dove at the
cruisers, knowing he couldn’t hurt them. His bombs were
gone and ammunition was low, but by diving he could save
the others by drawing the cruiser’s
deadly fire. The bomber was hit
many times as he dove on the Jap
cruisers. The damaged plane turned
over on its back and spun downward
into the sea. Even as Wilkie’s plane
was falling, the other planes were
roaring out of the harbor and back to
their home base. Major Wilkins died at age 26 on November
2, 1943 in Rabaul, New Britain. He was awarded the Congressional
Medal of Honor for his bravery and heroism that
day, the highest military honor. The little boy who grew up in
Tyrrell County was an example for us all!
Orthodox Christianity by Fr Jonathan Tobias, MDiv, MSEd
Easter
T
oward
the end of this month (April), the world will be celebrating
Easter.
For most members of the Christian community, Easter will
be celebrated on the twenty-first. There will be joyful music,
perhaps a cantata, sunrise services, and a prayer breakfast on
the day before. Easter hymns will be sung, like “Up From the
Grave He Arose.”
But for Eastern Orthodox Christians, Easter will be celebrated
a week later on April 28th. What is more, Easter is known only
as “Pascha,” which is the ancient Greek Christian word for
“Passover.”
Perhaps for others, Christmas may be the chief celebration of
the entire year. But in Orthodoxy, Pascha reigns supreme. It is
the “Feast of Feasts,” and shines like the sun throughout the
entire Church Year.
In fact, every single Divine Liturgy (our word for “Mass,” or
“morning worship service”) is rooted in Pascha. And the only
reason why all Christians (not just Orthodox) worship on
Sunday morning is because Sunday is the Day of the Resurrection.
Saturday, the “seventh day” or the Sabbath, is the day
of rest, but the Lord’s Day is mystically known as the “Eighth
Day,” the day of Resurrection that transcends and shines into
all space and time.
Eastern Orthodoxy is truly and thoroughly a Paschal religion.
St Gregory the Theologian, a fourth century bishop of Constantinople
(now known as Istanbul in Turkey), once delivered
these beautiful, glorious words on Easter Day many years ago.
They continue to grow in power and poetry:
The Lord’s Pascha, Pascha, and again I will say Pascha, to
the honor of the Trinity. It is to us the feasts of feasts, and the
festival of festivals, as far exalted above all — not only for
those who are merely human and crawl on the ground but also
for those who are of Christ himself and are celebrated for him
— as the sun is above the stars. Beautiful indeed yesterday
[i.e., the night between Holy Friday and Holy Saturday] were
our splendid array and procession of lights, in which we were
united both privately and publicly, almost every sort of people
and every rank, lighting up the night with plentiful fires. This is
a symbol of the great light, both the heavenly light that makes
fires from above … and equally the light above the heavens
… in the Trinity, by which every light has been produced,
divided off from the undivided light and honored. Yet today is
more beautiful and more illustrious, inasmuch as yesterday’s
light was a forerunner of the great light’s rising, and as it were
a kind of pre-festal gladness. But today we celebrate the
resurrection itself, not as still hoped for but as having already
occurred and gathering the whole world to itself. (Oration 45)
If you ever get a chance, come and visit an Orthodox Church
on Pascha (this year on April 28th). You’ll feel the joy and see
glory.
And when you hear, over and over again, the glad words
“Christ is Risen!,” you will naturally and joyfully respond, “He is
Risen Indeed!”
Habitat for Humanity is a Christian ministry
answering the call of the gospel to respond
to our neighbors in need. What better partners
could we have than local churches? Actively pursuing
and nurturing partnerships with churches
helps us fulfill our mission of demonstrating the
love and teachings of Jesus Christ.
Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity would like
to establish better partnerships with the many
churches in Pasquotank County because we
believe that working together, we can help more
members of our community.
The Church Relations Committee helps build
these relationships in several ways:
Speaking to churches about ECHFH to establish
working relationships before a build
Recruiting church members to volunteer at
build sites as well as serving on our board and
committees
Communicating with congregations through
church bulletins and announcements
Arranging meeting places and church sponsors
for lunches during a build
Coordinating delivery of food and clean-up after
meals
Contacting churches to solicit housewarming
gifts for partner families (dishes, linens, knitted/
crocheted items)
In addition, the Church Relations Committee solicits
church sponsorships of builds. These can
be donations to sponsor a specific room in the
house or a specific part of the project (kitchen
cabinets, electrical supplies, paint supplies, etc.).
Churches attended by partner families are especially
encouraged to participate with lunches,
monetary donations and volunteers for build.
Many of these tasks are build-specific (preparing
meals) but generally only require a few hours to
complete. Some can be done from home, such
as calling churches to arrange for a meeting
place of lunch or to solicit housewarming gifts.
If you are interested in working on the Church
Relations Committee, contact Jane Elfring,
jelfri@bellatlantic.net, 252-384-0115, for further
information.
Sneak Peak of Upcoming Programs
by Charlotte M. Patterson, Education Curator
Museum of the Albemarle
Museum staff were certainly not hibernating during these past winter
months. History for Lunch and Tot Time resumed, a number of
exhibits opened, and multiple special programs were presented. Now
that spring is rolling around, we’ll see all new programs and exhibits.
Biscuits, Tractors, and Chickens, on April 5 and 6, will educate visitors
about the rich agricultural history of the Albemarle region. The program’s
major attractions include the Teeny Tiny Farm traveling petting
zoo, sponsored by the North Carolina Museum of History Associates,
and Out ‘n the Cold band, crafters, antique tractors, and such experiences
as churning butter and rolling dough.
Summer at MOA will be filled with programs for the kiddies, beginning
with Summer Fun Days on June 12 and July 17 and At the Movies! For
Kids screenings on June 20 and July 25. In addition, we will offer two
one-day camps: All About Pirates! for ages 5 through 8 on July 22 and
Digging Deep into the Past for ages 9 through 12 on July 25.
Ready for a sneak peek into fall and winter? Programs will include our
History for Lunch series every first Wednesday of each month and Tot
Time on the second Thursday of each month. Walk for Hunger with
Food Bank of the Albemarle returns to Sunday on October 13—please
come out and support hunger-relief efforts that assist those facing food
insecurity in northeast North Carolina. We’ll then round out the year
with Designers’ Workshop: Deck Those Halls on November 16 and
the Gingerbread Workshop on December 6. Our annual Holiday Open
House is scheduled for December 7 and will have a new theme for
2019 (watch out for the Grinch to take over MOA).
How I Found Peace of Mind Today by Planning for Tomorrow
Like filing tax returns or giving public speeches, planning
a funeral can be a source of anxiety and procrastination.
Perhaps it’s uncertainty, concern over talking
with a spouse, or denial because everything seems fine.
Growing up in a family funeral business you might say it
was easy to plan a funeral for my husband and myself.
Call it strange, but there were always people conversing
in the front room underneath my house discussing burial
plots, casket styles, and music for church services. It
seemed normal and commonplace.
After having children, pre-planning a funeral over a 20
minute after-dinner discussion gave me peace of mind
and relief. The charities and faith-based organizations
my husband and I are passionate about were included
as well so they continue to fund themselves and make
an impact.
I want others to experience the empowerment of planning
ahead so they can operate confidently from a state
of abundance while enjoying their family.
“The difference is night and day when you are working
with a family who already has it said and done,” said
Sherry Meads, manager of West Lawn Cemetery, Elizabeth
City.
West Lawn Cemetery offers burial, cremation, and
entombment for families and individuals. They currently
intern 900 veterans.
“You can come out and say exactly where you want it,”
Sherry notes.
“Someone’s going to have to plan it. You can make it
clear to your family.”
by Laura Bush Jenkins
Reserving a plot and pre-paying are safe starting points
even if you are unclear of your final wishes or where your
children will settle down. If you are planning for burial
but decide to be cremated later, there are options to
accommodate your wishes. For example, your ashes
may be scattered in a personalized memorial garden or
a commemorative bench can house cremains of multiple
family members.
Saving money and conserving emotional energy provides
your loved ones with space to properly grieve.
According to Kirk Rivers of Beach Rivers Funeral Service
of Elizabeth City and Virginia Beach, the average funeral
cost is $10,150.
If children are not financially prepared and must draw
from savings, an estate sale, or another family member,
they may overlook important details conveying a parent’s
significance and legacy.
Instead of feeling strained and overwhelmed, the proper
insurance plan fulfills your responsibility to yourself and
those you care about most. Yo may already have insurance
that hasn’t been recently reviewed or updated.
Or you may not have considered the impact of another family member’s
premature death.
You can feel empowered to take control of the unknown, begin the
difficult conversations, and set the example for your family.
For a complimentary planning guide to organize and coordinate
your family’s next steps, please contact Laura Bush Jenkins of TWS
drums when Native Journeys Music & Dance Festival takes
place on April 27 and 28, 2019. Natives and visitors will travel
to the beautiful wind-swept shores of Hatteras Island for a
weekend of music, dancing, story telling, demonstrations,
crafts, native food, and much, MUCH more!
On both Saturday and Sunday, there will be multiple activities
taking place every hour. Visitors will have an opportunity to
make their own rattle and use it in the dance circle, to have
their faces “tattooed” with removable ink, talk with a story teller,
play a Native American flute, share the elders’ circle, see dance
demonstrations - including the hula with Ha Aheo O Hawai,
Other sessions will include information on the natives of Hatteras
Island, Native languages, the impact of Native American
music in popular culture, and techniques for making Yaupon
tea, herbs.
Springtime Meal
By Rosie Hawthorne
Wave
It's not just another wave,
don’t know about you, but I’m ready for spring. I’m ready for lighter
I meals and fresh vegetables. Every year I look forward to the first
spears of asparagus in my garden and I’ve ear-marked them for a light,
yet filling, quiche. The quiche makes for a simple and satisfying meal and
I’ve topped it off with an effortless citrus pie that’s as easy as … well, pie.
Asparagus Quiche
1 pie crust
1 ½ cups skim milk
1 cup heavy cream
6 eggs, room temperature
½ tsp kosher salt
¼ tsp freshly ground pepper
⅛ tsp freshly grated nutmeg
1 dozen asparagus spears
1 TB unsalted butter
1 cup sliced mushrooms
½ cup chopped onion
2 cups spinach, stemmed and chopped
6 strips bacon, cooked, drained, and crumbled (optional)
3 oz. diced Swiss cheese
2 oz. grated Monterey Jack cheese
Parmesan cheese, grated
In a medium skillet over medium high heat, melt the
butter. Add in the mushroom slices and sauté about 2
minutes, then add the onion and cook another minute,
stirring. Add in the spinach leaves, stir, and remove from
heat, letting spinach wilt.
Beat eggs until frothy, then beat in milk and cream. (You
could use whole milk, but I never have that on hand, so
I always use what I do have - a combination of skim and
cream.) Stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
it's an experience.
occasional travelogue, please visit
Citrus Pie
1 sleeve saltine crackers
½ sleeve Ritz crackers
1 stick unsalted butter
3 TB sugar
Heat oven to 350°.
Read More at:
outerbankswave.com
Crush crackers in a processor. Stir in sugar, then
knead in the butter until the crumbs just hold together.
Press into an 8-inch pie pan and refrigerate for
15 minutes. Bake for 16-18 minutes, or until crust
starts to color. Let crust cool a bit.
1 can (14-oz.) sweetened condensed milk
4 egg yolks
Zest of one lime
½ cup lemon and lime juice (I used 3 lemons and 1
lime for the juice.)
Beat yolks one at a time into condensed milk, then
beat in lime and lemon juice and zest. Pour into
prepared shell and bake 12 minutes.
2 egg whites, room temperature
¼ tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 TB sugar
While the pie is baking, beat whites with cream of
tartar until soft peaks form. Beat in vanilla and sugar
until stiff peaks form. Remove pie from oven and
decoratively swirl meringue over top, spreading to
edges. Return to oven and bake 6 more minutes
so filling will set. Remove from oven. If meringue
needs more browning, run pie under a 450° broiler
for a couple of minutes or use a cooking torch to
finish it off.
Chill pie before slicing.
For the pie crust, you can make your own, but I like quick
and easy, so I’m using a rolled-up refrigerated crust. (I
don’t recommend the frozen crusts.) Place crust in a
9-inch deep dish pie dish and crimp pastry around the
edges. Place diced Swiss on the bottom and then spoon
in mushroom/onion/spinach mixture. If you like, you could
add in the optional bacon crumbles here. Pour in the
custard mixture and sprinkle the Monterey Jack cheese
on top. Prepare the asparagus spears by snapping the
spear where it naturally breaks off, then halve each spear.
Arrange spears in the quiche and grate a light covering of
Parmesan cheese over top.
Bake in a 350° oven for about 70 minutes. Check after 20
minutes and cover edges if they’re starting to brown too
much. Remove from oven and let quiche sit for at least
15 minutes before slicing.
If you like, add some sliced strawberries.
Making Sense Of Cryptocurrencies
(NAPSI)—Social and traditional media have been
abuzz with articles and information about the rising
phenomenon of digital currencies. But what does it all
mean and should you buy in?
What Is Cryptocurrency?
Cryptocurrency, or simply crypto, is one type of digital
currency. Cryptocurrencies are distinct from “fiat
currencies” such as the dollar, euro or yen. Unlike fiat
currencies, crypto isn’t represented or organized by
physical paper units or coins. Rather, each unit is a
unique alphanumeric string of computer code.
Also, cryptocurrencies are not issued by a central
bank. Instead, they are controlled by technology that
determines how many units are produced and how
transactions are recorded. While Bitcoin is one of the
earliest and most recognized cryptocurrencies, more
than 1,000 cryptocurrencies currently exist.
For U.S. federal tax purposes, cryptocurrency is treated
as property, which means selling or exchanging it
can have tax consequences.
Cryptocurrencies and Risk
Buying, selling and using cryptocurrencies comes with
numerous risks.
• In some cases, you can spend and trade crypto, but
these products are not legal tender in the U.S. and
most other jurisdictions. No law requires companies or
individuals to accept crypto as a form of payment. If no
one accepts a specific cryptocurrency, that crypto will
become worthless.
• Platforms that buy and sell cryptocurrencies can be
hacked, and some have failed. Consumers can—and
have—lost money.
• Cryptocurrency payments are irreversible. Once you
complete a transaction, it cannot be reversed.
Cryptocurrencies and Investing
All investments come with some degree of risk, and
cryptocurrencies are no exception. Only invest what
you can afford to lose and be aware that you may lose
some or all of your investment.
Investing in cryptocurrencies can take many forms,
such as purchasing coins in the hope their value
increases or buying shares in platforms or companies
that facilitate blockchain technology and other aspects
of the cryptocurrency revolution in the hope they
succeed.
Another way to invest is through an Initial Coin Offering,
or ICO. An ICO is a way for companies to raise
money that involves the creation and sale of digital
tokens. A certain number of these tokens are sold to
investors in exchange for other cryptocurrencies or fiat
currencies like the dollar.
As with any new industry or concept, be alert for fraud,
which has occurred in both ICO and direct currency
purchases. Pump-and-dump scams are a potential risk
with some crypto-related stocks, particularly those that
do not list on a major exchange such as the NYSE or
It is not my fault that certain
so-called bohemian
elements have found in my
writings something to hang
their peculiar beatnik
theories on.
Nasdaq.
Crypto Takeaways
Cryptocurrencies and the technologies that
power them may hold great potential for
legitimate innovations in capital raising and
financial markets. But it can be a challenge
for investors to verify information about these
products to make informed decisions. There
are also major questions about how these
currencies are regulated both domestically
and across the globe.
The markets for cryptocurrencies continue to
display high levels of volatility, and involve speculative
risk and the potential for fraud. Speculators have been
drawn to cryptocurrencies as a way to make a quick
profit. But like any speculative investment, you can
lose money.
And even when legitimate companies flock to a hot,
new sector, fraudsters almost always follow suit. Look
out for guarantees, unregistered products, claims of
overly consistent returns, complex strategies, missing
documentation, account discrepancies and pushy
salespeople. All are red flags of potential fraud. Use
firms that tout these opportunities.
Smartmouth Brewery: Bringing their brand to the beach!
By: James H. Brown
Since 2012, Smartmouth has helped shape
the Hampton Roads craft beer scene
with unique styles, quality ingredients and an
emphasis on flavor over flash. No gimmicks,
no funny business, just an appreciation for
well-crafted beer and a desire to share it with
others. Today, they distribute a variety of beers
throughout the state of Virginia, in addition to
serving our local community with locations in
both Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Their Norfolk
facility is the primary location for brewing,
packaging and distributing their beers while
the Pilot House in Virginia Beach offers additional
private event space, a tasting room and
a small-batch brewery system for making more
unique and experimental beers. While the craft
brewery scene is booming now, Smartmouth
was one of the first ones to make it here, and
they continue to show why they are one of the
best in the game!
Something in the Water: April 26-28
By: James H. Brown
Pharrell Williams is going back to his roots and bringing an awesome event
to the Virginia Beach area, the likes of which it has never seen! “Something
in the water” is a huge concert event that will rival any other across the
country. A few tickets are still on sale for your chance to see the likes of Pharrell
Williams, Snoop Dogg, Migos, Missy Elliot, Dave Matthews Band, ASAP
Ferg, and Pusha T to name a few! The event will take place at the oceanfront
in Virginia Beach and will mark the first time something like this has ever come
to this area! Virginia Beach has had a less than stellar history of having our
“beach college weekend” during that same weekend in which shootings have
happened. Pharrell wants to change that and inspire people to come together
with music. There will also be a prayer service as well. This is a can’t miss
event! Get your tickets at ticketmaster.com
James H. Brown III- Hampton Road’s newest thriller
author. Who doesn’t love a good thriller?
A thrilling story that can take a person through a myriad
of emotions, tug at their heartstrings, scare them to death,
and make them slightly uncomfortable. That’s what a good
thriller is all about. James Henry Brown III has written two
must-read thrillers: The Gladds and The Gladds Part II.
This story will force a person to ask themselves a question:
How far would you need to be pushed for revenge?
That is the first question that our main characters are faced
with. The second one is, if you do take revenge, what will be
left of you when it is all said and done? What scars would
linger emotionally and mentally?
In the end, is it all worth it? With Halloween right around
the corner, it is a must that you get your hands on this story
President Andrew Jackson is Censured
In 1834, President Andrew Jackson is censured by the U.S. Senate.
“[W]e should not be at all surprised,” one columnist scoffed at the time, “if he attempted to
dissolve the present Congress—at least the Senatorial branch, which, by refusing to register
all his imperial edicts, has become extremely offensive to His Majesty!”
At the root of the quarrel was a disagreement about the Second Bank of the United States.
Jackson believed the quasi-public bank to be unconstitutional, and he worked to have it
ended. But many Congressmen did not share the President’s views. And they hoped to use
the issue to put the President in a difficult spot. Thus, Congress passed a bill authorizing
the bank’s re-charter, just as Jackson was running for re-election in 1832. Surely Jackson
wouldn’t veto a bill extending the bank’s charter—not during a presidential election year?
Except he did veto it. And then he got re-elected! Jackson viewed the sequence as a
mandate to continue what he’d begun. The bank charter might not expire until 1836, but he
would start removing public funds from the bank in the meantime.
Jackson had just one problem. He needed the help of Treasury Secretary Louis McLane,
who refused to comply. So Jackson replaced McLane with another man, William John
Duane. Can you believe that Duane refused to help Jackson, too? Undeterred, Jackson
fired Duane, replacing him with Roger Taney. Perhaps even more daringly, Jackson used a
recess appointment to get Taney into office. Taney immediately began moving the funds.
by Tara Ross
On April 15, Jackson returned his own scathing message. He believed that the censure was
unconstitutional. If Congress wanted to act against the Executive, then it should impeach
him and hold a trial—a trial in which he would have a right to defend himself. The President,
Jackson wrote, “has been by a majority of his constitutional triers accused and found guilty
of an impeachable offense, but in no part of this proceeding have the directions of the Constitution
been observed.”
One Democrat from Missouri urged that the matter be expunged from the Senate journals.
Others worried that expunging a portion of the journal was, in and of itself, a worrisome
precedent. Shouldn’t the journal reflect reality? It took nearly three years, but the Senate
eventually voted, 24-19, to expunge the matter from the record. It would do so by drawing
“black lines round the said resolve, and write across the face thereof, in strong letters, the
following words: ‘Expunged by order of the Senate, this 16th day of January, in the year of
our Lord 1837.”
Senators watched as the change was made, immediately after the vote. “No sooner had this
been done,” the Register of Debates records, “than hisses, loud and repeated, were heard
from various parts of the gallery.”
Wow. Can you imagine the scene?
Congress was furious and demanded notes from Jackson’s cabinet discussions. (Jackson
refused.) One Senator filed a resolution to censure the President. A debate over that motion
raged for weeks! Finally, on March 28, the Senate passed a resolution censuring the President
who, “in the late Executive proceedings in relation to the public revenue, has assumed
upon himself authority and power not conferred by the Constitution and laws, but in derogation
of both.”
“Introducing the all new body style and
amazing features of the 2019 Ram Truck!”
“Call today and mention this ad for your VIP Test Drive”

Modern Monetary Theory Is a Recipe for Hyperinflation
he latest fashion that’s captured the political left is Modern
T Monetary Theory (MMT). Once a quiet idea resting in the annals
of academia, it is now taken up by the likes of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
and Bernie Sanders’s adviser, Stephanie Kelton. It’s still
an unpopular theory among economists—and for good reason.
MMT extrapolates from a series of accounting identities with
reckless abandon. By leveraging America’s infinite ability to print its
own currency, MMTers think they can sidestep the need to balance
budgets. They are wrong. Modern Monetary Theory is one of those
ideas that mathematically holds together but utterly fails once
you’ve incorporated actual economics.
How Monetary Policy Now Works
To understand how MMT fails, it’s important to understand how it
should work, beginning with the system it yearns to replace: conventional
monetary policy.
Here’s how monetary policy works now. If a central bank, such as
the US Federal Reserve (the Fed), thinks interest rates should be
lower to encourage economic growth, it creates money at the push
of the button. It uses this newly created money to buy government
bonds from private banks. These banks, now flush with cash, are
willing to lend at a lower interest rate, encouraging consumption and
investment.
If the central bank fears inflation because there’s too much money
in the system, it sells government bonds to banks and deletes the
money it collects. It should be noted that figuring out how much
money to create or delete in order to achieve the delicate balance of
stable prices and economic growth is very difficult.
Money, Money Everywhere
MMT transfers these difficult monetary decisions to Congress.
The Fed still creates money, but Congress, by passing legislation,
determines how much they create. New money doesn’t flow through
banks but through the recipients of various spending programs.
Inflation is the natural concern of all this money creation, and
MMTers have an answer: taxes. In the MMT world, taxes are not
used to raise money for future spending. Taxes are used to destroy
money to balance out previous spending. Tax revenue collected is
money deleted.
By: David Youngberg
Politicians have little incentive to restrain spending. Spending
generates political benefits in the short-term (before the election) at
a long-term cost (after the election). There’s an endless number of
ways to spend money and, as evidenced by persistent government
deficits, every incentive for politicians to fulfill those requests. It
would be naïve to assume that politicians will restrain their spending
even if they know they should. They already don’t.
Nor is there reason to assume politicians will raise taxes to balance
their spending. Taxes remain wildly unpopular; their presence can
even derail support for popular policies. For example, support for
Medicare-for-All plummets when pollsters note that it could come
with higher taxes. Taxes to fight the distant and abstract concept of
inflation will surely be even less popular. Why would any politician
increase taxes to fight a problem voters have trouble even acknowledging?
Even if an MMT regime reliably used taxes to fight inflation, it would
be completely impractical. The Fed meets eight times a year to
evaluate how it should adjust the growth of the money supply. An
MMT government would have to do something similar about its
taxes and spending.
We would never stop talking about taxes. The 2017 tax reform took
months to negotiate and incorporated a menagerie of conflicting
interests, each pulling the tax code to a preferred policy outcome.
Expecting lawmakers to also carefully consider how much money
they’re leaving in the economy is ludicrous.
The myopic attitude of politicians is why strong economies establish
central bank independence. Countries that subject the power to
printing money to political pressure inevitably create price instability.
Under Modern Monetary Theory, we will end up with the same
result we have now—spending will far outstrip taxes—but now with
hyperinflation.
There Is No Infinite Power to Tax
Even if somehow the political will to use taxes to offset spending is
achieved, the government’s infinite ability to create is not matched
by an infinite ability to destroy. Taxes are avoidable, something Canada
has recently re-discovered, so the government’s ability to reduce
the money supply through taxes is actually quite constrained.
the rich, politicians will be forced to fight inflation with higher taxes
for everyone else, threatening to cancel out the benefits government
spending sought to impart.
Just like the rich, everyone else will respond accordingly. Voters
will demand more spending, and special interests will want tax
exemptions. Even more than it does now, federal spending will
epitomize Bastiat’s insightful description of government: “the great
fiction through which everyone endeavors to live at the expense of
everyone else.” Spending will be high. Tax revenue destruction will
be low. Inflation, and then hyperinflation, will follow.
A House (and Senate) of Cards
Modern Monetary Theory advocates argue governments have monetary
policy exactly backward. Taxes don’t fund spending, they say.
Spend first and use taxes to fix it later.
They forget that tax revenue doesn’t fund spending now, as
evidenced by persistent government deficits. If taxes can’t offset
spending when politicians are supposedly constrained, taxes won’t
offset spending when politicians are explicitly handed the power of
the printing press. Implementing MMT—even seriously discussing
implementing MMT—would create a disaster that no plumber could
fix, drowning us all in a tidal wave of hyperinflation.
David Youngberg is an associate professor of economics at Montgomery
College in Rockville, MD.
In an interview with NPR, Kelton likens the economy to a sink.
The money supply is like water flowing from the faucet, which, in
the MMT world, is spending. If there’s too much water, the sink
overflows (inflation), but have no fear: the government’s ability to tax
is like the drain. As long as money flowing in from the faucet is balanced
by money flowing out through the drain, there’s no inflation.
The result is limitless funding with no downside.
If you think that’s too good to be true, you’re right. Once you’ve
considered actual incentives, it’s clear that implementing Modern
Monetary Theory doesn’t avoid the (hyper)inflation problem at all.
The Faucet Is Stuck, and the Drain Is Clogged
There’s a reason modern economies establish a firewall between
their elected officials and their central bank: printing money to fund
spending is much more politically tempting than raising that money
with taxes.
High taxes generate little revenue because high taxes reduce the
incentive to do whatever is taxed. It’s much like how high prices
reduce revenue by discouraging customers. A high income tax
discourages working, a high sales tax discourages buying, and
a high capital gains tax discourages investment. High taxes can
even move activity to the untaxable informal sector, a phenomenon
common in underdeveloped countries. There’s a limit to how much
money the government can tax out of the economy.
Consider taxes on the rich, which are typically the most popular
kind. The rich don’t need additional income as much as the poor,
which is both the reason people like taxing them and why taxing
them doesn’t raise much revenue. The rich can most easily retire
early, turn down work, and demand forms of non-monetary (and
thus untaxable) compensation. You can’t balance unlimited spending
by only taxing groups that are best at avoiding taxes.
Since you can’t balance unrestrained money creation by only taxing
Jakes Outdoor Adventures
As many of you remember I repowered my Parker 2501
Center Console nearly two years ago with a pair of
Evinrude 225 High Output G2 engines, replacing the pair of
Yamaha 225 Four Strokes engines. After experiencing two
summers of fishing, I can tell you I am very satisfied with the
transition from 4 stroke to 2 stroke motors. The debate of 2
stroke versus 4 stroke engines can be discussed just like
“which came first the chicken or the egg”, but until you actually
experience both you really cannot fully understand some
of the major differences. One of the main reasons I switched
wasbecause I no longer had to pull the boat out of the water
every 100 hours and perform a 100 hour service. Having to
do this would cost me a couple of days off the water. With
the Evinrude G2, your don’t have to have to perform any
service on the motor until 500 hours! Think about how much
time and travel you will save not having to pull the boat out
of the water having it serviced every 100 hours.
Another bonus I see in these engines is the increased power
and torque they have. I fish out of Oregon Inlet and Hatteras
Inlet and everyone knows these inlets can be somewhat
dangerous and challenging at times. Evinrude’s two stroke
power advantage helps me stay on plane and gives me the
power to manage the heavy currents and seas I experience
while crossing the bar. Also the ease of throttling the engines
from higher to lower speeds helps me manage those wave
sets that vary in spacing and size. Once out of the inlet, I
get to experience the fuel efficiency of the Evinrude G2 by
burning less fuel as I head to the Gulf Stream which is about
40 miles away.
Another advantage I have experienced is the Evinrude
ICON electronic controls. I have them not only on the lower
console but also in the tower. In May and early June, I Cobia
fish and there are days that Cobia can be very skittish and
shy. One thing that has helped me put fish in the boat is
not only the quietness of the engines, but the smoothness
and the extreme quietness of shifting out of gear where
the fish do not hear it. My previous controls and engines
slammed in and out of gear and caused me to miss casting
at fish because they were spooked and dove to the bottom. I
contribute my successful 2018 Cobia season to my engines
because they operate in a stealth mode and rarely give me
away when I approach them free swimming on top of the
water.
As good as any motor is they are only as good as the
dealer that services them. My dealer is Causeway Marina in
Elizabeth City, and they make sure my motors run at peak
performance. If you are thinking about repowering in the
near future, contact them and discuss the costs and advantages
of the Evinrude Etec G2 versus the other companies’
4 stroke motors.
Northeast North Carolina Family History – when snail mail was just the thing…
By: Irene Hampton - nencfamilyhistory@gmail.com
few years ago the United States Post Office in downtown
A Elizabeth City closed much to the dismay of many residents
and businesses. There is a wonderful website of the North
Carolina History Society where you can read all the names of
the various county post offices, their post masters and cancelled
postmarks for those sites that are available. This society formed
in 1982 to ‘promote, study, and educate the public about North
Carolina Postal History.’ To ease your search I have included
links for the site for some local counties.
www.ncpostalhistory.com/search/
www.ncpostalhistory.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/PostmarkCatalog_camden_county-20130425.pdf
Why the interest? I was checking Ancestry.com for any recent
information on one of my husband’s 3rd great grandfathers,
Thomas Guard Munden when a record popped up that he had
been the postmaster at Currituck Court House from 2 November
1866 until 31 January 1875. Well that was news to me
and added another relative to our Currituck’s postmaster list.
A great-grandfather, William H. Hampton was postmaster in
Waterlily from March 1893 until December of 1915 when his son
Arthur took over. His sister-in-law my husband’s grandmother
Lily Sanderlin Hampton was briefly postmistress from July 1937
until that post office was discontinued and the mail was sent
to Coinjock in 1938. Her father Solomon Baum Sanderlin, as I
have mentioned in the past was the Corolla postmaster from August
1924 until September of 1935. Albert B. Hampton put in an
amazing stretch in Aydlett from June of 1908 until his retirement
at the end of August 1953.
A little bit of history about the United States Postal Service. You
may be aware that Benjamin Franklin was appointed the first
postmaster general in 1775 to offer an alternative to the Crown
Post. The post office was officially created by an Act of Congress
in 1792. By 1869 there were 27,000 local post offices
with mail being sorted in specialized railroad cars en route to
their destinations. The cars were known as RPOs or Railway
Post Offices and workers were regularly checked for speed and
efficiency. The first official postal stamps were sold on 1 July
1847. The image of Benjamin Franklin graced the five cent
stamp that would take a letter weighing less than an ounce up to
300 miles. For ten cents your communication could travel over
300 miles with George Washington’s likeness accompanying it.
Over the years Camden County has had 17 post offices: Bartlett,
Borum, Bray, Belcross, Camden Court House and Camden,
Cross Canal, Geneva, Indian Town, Jonesburg, Lilly, New Lebanon,
New Mills, Old Trap, Riddle, Ship Yard, Shiloh and South
Mills. Jonesburg and New Lebanon were both created in 1797
with New Lebanon moving to Pasquotank in 1839 and Jonesburg
becoming Camden Court House.
Pasquotank has had 20 post offices: Elisha, Fauna, Elizabeth
City, Elizabeth City Court House, Hazen, Hintonsville, Kehukee,
Mumford, Naval Air Station, New Lebanon, Newbegun, Newbegun
Creek, Nixonton, Okisko, Pasquotank, Poolville, Rose
Dale, Sawyer’s Creek, Walston and Weeksville. Sawyer’s Ferry
started in 1792 and was discontinued in 1797.
The winner in post offices is Currituck with 42: Aydlett, Barco,
Bertha, California, Coinjock, Corner Green, Corner Gum, Corolla,
Cowells Bridge, Currituck, Currituck Court House, Currituck
Narrows, Deals, Dey’s Mill, Duck, Grandy, Greentown, Gregory,
Harbinger, Indiantown, Indian Ridge, Jarvisburg, Kitty Hawk,
Knotts Island, Marvin, Mamie, Moyock, Point Harbor, Poplar
Branch, Powells Point, Olds, Otila, Seagull, Shaw, Shawboro,
Sligo, Snowden, Spot, Tulls Creek, Waterlily, Wildacres and
Woodleigh.
Ancestry.com has them listed under Appointments of United
States Postmasters 1832-1971. Have fun!
oral surgeons to administer anesthesia for minor
surgeries in medical offices and clinical settings. Dr.
Bald will present his workshops at the Dental School at
Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam.
In the Albemarle Region, Dr. Bald uses modern equipment
and anesthesia techniques. Our goal is to provide
excellent care for every patient. Even though Dr. Bald
has extracted over 350,000 teeth, each patient is an
individual and every case is unique.
Our patients have a positive experience! Recent
patients have commented, “ I would recommend every
person I know to go there.”; “As soon as I walked in
I felt very comfortable.”; “The experience was very
positive, easy, and fast!!!”; “My waiting time was very
short.”; “I was super afraid of getting my wisdom teeth
removed. He put my mind at ease.”; “I got in the week
Earth Day Offers Valuable Lessons to Investors
On April 22, millions of people will observe Earth Day by participating in
events that support environmental protection. As a citizen, you may
want to take part in a local celebration. And as an investor, you can learn a
few lessons from the themes of Earth Day.
Here are a few of them:
• Avoid a toxic investment environment. A recurring topic of Earth Day is
the necessity of reducing toxins from our air, water and land. And, while
you might not think of it in those terms, your portfolio can also contain
some “toxic” elements in the form of investments that may be hindering
your progress, or, at the very least, not contributing to it. For instance, you
might own some investments that, for one reason or another, have consistently
underperformed, or are now too aggressive for your risk tolerance,
which can change over the years. In these cases, you might be better off
selling the investments and using the proceeds for other, more appropriate
ones.
• Look for sources of renewable energy. Efforts to protect our environment
include a push for more renewable energy sources, such as solar and
wind. As an investor, you, too, can look for “renewables” in the form of
investments that keep paying you back in one way or another. Of course,
the most basic example would be a bond, which pays you regular interest
until the bond matures and you get your principal back, provided the issuer
doesn’t default, which is generally unlikely with an investment-grade bond.
However, you also may want to consider another type of renewable – dividend-paying
stocks. By reinvesting these dividends, you can increase the
number of shares you own – and share ownership is a good way to help
build your portfolio. Some companies have paid, and even increased, their
dividends many years in a row, but keep in mind they’re not obligated to do
so.
• Plant seeds of opportunity. Some Earth Day events involve planting trees
– many of which won’t be fully grown for decades. When you invest, you
are planting seeds in the form of investments you hope will grow over the
years. Of course, you will likely see some volatility along the way, but over
the long term, investments with strong fundamentals may reward you for
your patience.
Apart from these ideas, you also can connect the idea of helping protect
the environment with investing for your goals. Through socially responsible
investing, you can screen out investments in companies whose products
you find objectionable, while supporting businesses whose work you
believe helps contribute to a better world. And you can find investments,
such as mutual funds that emphasize social responsibility, whose returns
are competitive, so you don’t have to sacrifice growth potential for your
principles.
In the nearly 50 years since Earth Day celebrations began, we have taken
steps to improve many aspects of our physical world, although the work
continues. And by following some of the same techniques, you can improve
your investment environment, too.
New Life of Currituck
Do you ever think there were simpler times in the past? As
I watch things happen in the world around me there are
times I long for a simple life. If you like rock and roll you might
remember the song Lynyrd Skynyrd sang called “Be a simple
man”. Work, school, family and all the other responsibilities
can overwhelm us as individual’s peace can seem elusive at
best. Striving takes front and center stage and begins to blur
the lines of reality. As the lines of reality disappear truth turns
into compromise and love is diminished. So, are you striving to
be famous, rich or maybe striving just to be liked or loved?
The Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 13 “Love is patient,
love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not
arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own,
is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,
does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the
truth.” It really is hard to determine the truth these days, my
great grandfather used to say that when love is diminished
the truth disappears. Admitting errors in judgement, wrongs
and faults are seen today as futile to the detriment of humility
and personal growth. So, I did some quick research on some
quotes from our Presidents in the past and was encouraged
that we have some great people who worked very hard for the
freedoms that we take for granted. I also was challenged when
reading them to the point we could use some wise statements
like this today. Here are a few of those statements.
“Associate yourself with men of good quality if you esteem
your own reputation; for ‘tis better to be alone than in bad company.”
George Washington.
“Any man worth his salt will stick up for what he believes right,
but it takes a slightly better man to acknowledge instantly and
without reservation that he is in error.” Andrew Jackson
“If you always support the correct principles then you will never
get the wrong results!” Andrew Johnson
Ask ‘Chele
What you’re Looking for to Enhance Your Health & Relationships
am newly married and didn’t realize our first year
I together would be so difficult. My parents were
divorced and I didn’t have the best examples. How can
I overcome bumps and roadblocks to set the tone for a
great future?
We live in a disposable world where people often think
they can easily throw their marriage away. But getting
through tough times involves looking at what’s inside of
you and realizing you have a mechanism to adapt. 100%
of what happens to you is in your control and based on
how you respond.
I’ve shown others how to recognize their thoughts and
mold them into character and action that produces positive
outcomes and lasting relationships in the long term.
I was married before and am now in a second relationship
attempting to blend our families. How can I build
trust with my future stepkids?
As someone who’s worked as a child care provider, I
believe it’s important to establish intentional relationships
with each of the respective children. The new shared
household is a family unit.
You and your significant other can establish a dynamic
where you include one another in family decisions. The
children must run ideas by both of you for a request to be
granted. This builds respect for both parents as opposed
to creating a dynamic with favoritism.
This is a starting point intended to begin your path on
the momentum needed to reach your goal. The information
provided is not intended to replace guidance from a
licensed therapist.
Gates County Rodeo Returns for Action-Packed Family Fun
by Laura Bush Jenkins
Whether you are a city slicker or hard-core country
living enthusiast, come join the fun at the 22nd
annual Gates County Rodeo, May 10th and 11th. Last
year’s event was the biggest ever, and you can enjoy a
national caliber event right here in your own back yard.
Gates open both nights at 5pm, and the rodeo starts at
7 30 pm.
Saturday night will feature Stars and Stripes Drill Team
of Chesapeake performing a choreographed dance
routine on horseback. A not-for-profit organization, the
team’s mission is to promote patriotism within the local
community and showcase the versatility of the horse
and rider.
Reynoldson Baptist Church, Gates County Volunteer
Fire Department and Rescue Squad, and the local 4H
group will be present fundraising and sharing their vision
with the community.
Sanctioned by the Southern Rodeo Association, the
event began when founder Aaron Brown opened up his
personal ranch at 158 Paige Riddick Road alongside a
loyal group of church friends. A farrier, Aaron competed
in calf and team-roping as a child and was encouraged
and coached by his father.
“My favorite thing about the rodeo is the positive energy
that just radiates from the stadium,” said Ed White II of
Starr Motors, the event’s Platinum sponsor.
22 nd
The rodeo also welcomes nine-time consecutive “Clown
of the Year” Dusty Myers. Myers returned from Saudi
Arabia, entertaining officials in the nation’s first ever
recent camel festival. Dubbed “the great entertainer” by
announcer Trey Windhorst of Missouri, Dusty’s energy
and comedy connect with veteran attendees and newcomers.
In addition to competitive bull riding, bronc riding,
calf roping, and barrel racing, attendees can enjoy a
mechanical bull and children’s pony rides as well as
equestrian and children’s novelty vendors.
QSciences
“We feel pretty fortunate that we can partner with an
event that has a positive and wholesome attitude toward
sports. We also really enjoy catching up with some of
our former customers and making new friends along the
way.
Advance tickets can be purchased at Starr Motors (Suffolk)
Old Dominion Hay (Smithfield,) McKeel’s Jewelry
(Ahoskie,) F&H Print Sign Design (Elizabeth City,) and
