that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> hold about 20 percent of<br />
<strong>the</strong> fresh surface water in <strong>the</strong> world!”<br />
“What’s fresh water?” Grant asked. “It<br />
must not be <strong>the</strong> water at my school’s water<br />
fountain, because it tastes old!”<br />
Mimi laughed. “No, Grant,” she said.<br />
“Fresh water is water <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth that is not<br />
sea water from <strong>the</strong> ocean. It’s found in lakes,<br />
rivers, streams...places like that. It’s very<br />
important for <strong>the</strong> survival of people and<br />
animals <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth.”<br />

could be?” she said, and peered at her bright<br />
