Grant started air drumming. He waved<br />

his hands wildly in <strong>the</strong> air. “Rat-a-tat, rat-a-tat,<br />

ka-ching!” he exclaimed, as he smashed <strong>the</strong><br />

pretend cymbal.<br />

Mimi was already busy at work, making<br />

notes, and cooking up her next mystifying plot.<br />

She pushed her gem-studded reading glasses<br />

up into her bl<strong>on</strong>de hair.<br />

Christina kept trying to picture an<br />

island <strong>on</strong> a lake, but all she kept seeing in her<br />

mind were tiny patches of land that <strong>on</strong>e pers<strong>on</strong><br />

could barely stand <strong>on</strong>. It didn’t seem quite<br />

right that <strong>the</strong>re could be islands <strong>on</strong> a lake.<br />

Christina had visited many different islands<br />

with Mimi and Papa <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir o<strong>the</strong>r trips, but<br />

those islands were in <strong>the</strong> ocean, not a lake!<br />

Grant kept thinking about <strong>the</strong><br />

mysterious text message <strong>on</strong> Christina’s ph<strong>on</strong>e.<br />

He started worrying that some m<strong>on</strong>ster in <strong>the</strong><br />

lake would eat <strong>the</strong>m—and <strong>the</strong> boat!<br />

As Papa drove around a bend in <strong>the</strong><br />

road, <strong>the</strong>y all caught <strong>the</strong>ir first glimpse of Lake<br />

Erie. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> enormous expanse of water<br />

shimmered in <strong>the</strong> late afterno<strong>on</strong> sunlight.<br />
